Abstract:Silicon-carbon nanofibers coaxial sponge, with strong mechanical integrity and improved electronic conductivity, is a promising anode structure to apply into commercial high-capacity lithium ion batteries. We characterized the electrochemical and mechanical behaviors of amorphous silicon-coated carbon nanofibers (a-Si/CNFs) with in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that lithiation of the a-Si coating layer occurred from the surface and the a-Si/CNF interface concurrently, and propagated toward the center of the a-Si layer. Such a process leads to a sandwiched Li(x)Si/Si/Li(x)Si structure, indicating fast Li transport through the a-Si/CNF interface. Nanocracks and sponge-like structures developed in the a-Si layer during the lithiation-delithiation cycles. Lithiation of the a-Si layer sealed in the hollow CNF was also observed, but at a much lower speed than the counterpart of the a-Si layer coated on the CNF surface. An analytical solution of the stress field was formulated based on the continuum theory of finite deformation, explaining the experimental observation of longitudinal crack formation and general mechanical degradation mechanism in a-Si/CNF electrode.
Two-phase electrochemical lithiation in amorphous silicon

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized portable electronics and will be a key to electrifying transport vehicles and delivering renewable electricity. Amorphous silicon (a-Si) is being intensively studied as a high-capacity anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Its lithiation has been widely thought to occur through a single-phase mechanism with gentle Li profiles, thus offering a significant potential for mitigating pulverization and capacity fade. Here, we discover a surprising two-phase process of electrochemical lithiation in a-Si by using in situ transmission electron microscopy. The lithiation occurs by the movement of a sharp phase boundary between the a-Si reactant and an amorphous LixSi (a-LixSi, x similar to 2.5) product. Such a striking amorphous-amorphous interface exists until the remaining a-Si is consumed. Then a second step of lithiation sets in without a visible interface, resulting in the final product of a-LixSi (x similar to 3.75). We show that the two-phase lithiation can be the fundamental mechanism underpinning the anomalous morphological change of microfabricated a-Si electrodes, i.e., from a disk shape to a dome shape. Our results represent a significant step toward the understanding of the electrochemically driven reaction and degradation in amorphous materials, which is critical to the development of microstructurally stable electrodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
In Situ Atomic-Scale Imaging of Electrochemical Lithiation in Silicon.

Abstract:In lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical reaction between the electrodes and lithium is a critical process that controls the capacity, cyclability and reliability of the battery. Despite intensive study, the atomistic mechanism of the electrochemical reactions occurring in these solid-state electrodes remains unclear. Here, we show that in situ transmission electron microscopy can be used to study the dynamic lithiation process of single-crystal silicon with atomic resolution. We observe a sharp interface (∼1 nm thick) between the crystalline silicon and an amorphous Li x Si alloy. The lithiation kinetics are controlled by the migration of the interface, which occurs through a ledge mechanism involving the lateral movement of ledges on the close-packed {111} atomic planes. Such ledge flow processes produce the amorphous Li x Si alloy through layer-by-layer peeling of the {111} atomic facets, resulting in the orientation-dependent mobility of the interfaces.

Abstract:With an increasing demand for higher energy and power density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the coupled electrochemical-mechanical degradation of electrode materials becomes a more pressing problem. In particular, fracture and delamination of electrodes can occur during repeated charging and discharging of LIBs. An improved understanding of the mechanical behavior of electrode materials, which often evolves with the state-of-charge and cycle number, is therefore necessary for improving the performance and durability of LIBs and other types of batteries. In this presentation, I will provide an overview of our recent work on using four complementary measurement techniques: (1) electrochemical nanoindentation, (2) scanning probe microscopy, (3) peel adhesion and cohesion test, and (4) electrode curvature measurement to help understand several coupled effects between mechanical and electrochemical behavior of materials on the performance and durability of high capacity electrodes. Examples include silicon/polymer porous composite electrodes, polymeric binders, lithium metal electrodes, and ceramic materials for the positive electrode and solid-state electrolyte. These characterization techniques may also be used to investigate the coupled electrochemical-mechanical behavior of a wide range of materials for lithium-ion batteries and beyond.
Deformation and failure of lithiated Si electrodes of Li-ion batteries

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is widely regarded as one of the most promising anode materials for Li ion battery due to its high theoretical specific capacity. However, the volume change (~300%) during lithiation/delithiation results in poor mechanical integrity, which impedes its commercialization. To address this issue, a better understanding of the atomistic mechanisms responsible for the volume expansion is necessary. In this work, the atomic structure and stress evolution during lithiation/delithiation was investigated on a Si film (2.7 nm). Steep stress gradients were observed when the lithium content in the anode is very low (<Li0.5Si). Plastic flow and stress relaxation are dominant at higher Li concentrations. The microstructure evolution during lithiation process is associated with the break of covalent amorphous structure into small clusters, when Li concentration exceeds ~Li0.5Si. At a low Li concentration, the sharp stress increase is due to the elastic deformation of the covalent Si lattice. The radial distribution function (RDF) analysis indicates a defective amorphous structure in silicon film after a complete lithiation/delithiation cycle, contributing to the capacity loss. These results are believed to be able to help improve the materials selection and design of Li ion batteries.

Abstract:To develop high-capacity Li-ion batteries, volume expansion and material degradation of Si anodes have been attracting increasing attention. However, the effects of phase structures and geometrical constraints on the failure mechanism of lithiated Si have not been well understood. Considering phase boundaries formed during electrochemical cycles, we conducted molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the failure behaviour and microstructural evolution of single-phase and dual-phase (core–shell) lithiated Si structures when subjected to biaxial tensile stress. During lithiation, lithiated Si structures show a brittle-to-ductile transition. The brittle fracture is associated with nanoscale cavitation and void propagation. The ductility of lithiated Si structures increases with Li content due to the rearrangement of Li atoms. Compared with single-phase lithiated Si, dual-phase structures tend to fracture owing to inhomogeneous deformation and nanoscale cavitation. On the other hand, the ductility of lithiated Si decreases during delithiation, especially in dual-phase structures. This work provides a better understanding of the structure–property relationship of lithiated Si in charging-discharging cycles and strategies to improve the electrochemical performance of Si-based electrodes.

Abstract:Long-term durability is a major obstacle limiting the widespread use of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) in heavy-duty applications and others demanding extended lifetime. As one of the root causes of degradation and failure of battery performance, the electrode failure mechanisms are still unknown. Here, we reveal the fundamental fracture mechanisms of single-crystal silicon electrodes over extended lithiation/delithiation cycles, using electrochemical testing, microstructure characterization, fracture mechanics, and finite element analysis. Anisotropic lithium invasion causes crack initiation perpendicular to the electrode surface, followed by growth through the electrode thickness. The low fracture energy of the lithiated/unlithiated silicon interface provides a weak microstructural path for crack deflection, accounting for the crack patterns and delamination observed after repeated cycling. Based on this physical understanding, we demonstrate how electrolyte additives can heal electrode cracks and provide strategies to enhance the fracture resistance in future LIBs from surface chemical, electrochemical, and material science perspectives.

Abstract:Surface passivation has become a routine strategy of design to mitigate the chemomechanical degradation of high-capacity electrodes by regulating the electrochemical process of lithiation and managing the associated deformation dynamics. Oxides are the prevalent materials used for surface coating. Lithiation of SiO2 leads to drastic changes in its electro-chemo-mechanical properties from an electronic insulator and a brittle material in its pure form to a conductor and a material sustainable of large deformation in the lithiated form. We synthesized SiO2-coated SiC nanowires that allow us to focus on the lithiation behavior of the sub-10 nm SiO2 thin coating. We systematically investigate the structural evolution, the electronic conduction and ionic transport properties, and the deformation pattern of lithiated SiO2 through coordinated in situ transmission electron microcopy experiments, first-principles computation, and continuum theories. We observe the stress-mediated reaction that induces inhomogeneous growth of SiO2. The results provide fundamental perspectives on the chemomechanical behaviors of oxides used in the surface coating of Li-ion technologies.
Lithiation-induced fracture of silicon nanowires observed by in-situ scanning electron microscopy

Abstract:Silicon is expected to be a useful anode material in lithium ion batteries for future energy storage applications, because of its high theoretical charge storage density of Li+ ions. However, volume expansion due to lithiation fractures the Si anode material, leading to poor cycle stability of battery operation. The approaches to overcome the problem include using Si nanowires to relieve the stress induced by volume expansion and coating a protective layer on the Si anode to prevent delamination. In this study, we use in-situ scanning electron microscopy to monitor the morphological changes of 90 nm thick pristine Si nanowires and the Si nanowires coated with amorphous TiO2, respectively, during electrochemical lithiation. The results of in-situ observation show that both kinds of Si nanowires exhibit a larger thickness after 10 h lithiation and suffer fracture after 25 h. It is also found that the TiO2 layer is not strong enough to prevent Si nanowires from fracture. Since the TiO2 layer can not be elastically deformed, this surface shell fractures earlier in the lithiation process than pristine Si nanowires. Transformation of the crystalline Si nanowires to an amorphous phase and lithium composition detected in the nanowires support that the observed fracture indeed results from lithiation.
Crack growth and fracture toughness of amorphous Li-Si anodes: Mechanisms and role of charging/discharging studied by atomistic simulations

Abstract:Fracture is the main cause of degradation and capacity fading in lithiated silicon during cycling. Experiments on the fracture of lithiated silicon show conflicting results, and so mechanistic models can help interpret experiments and guide component design. Here, large-scale K-controlled atomistic simulations of crack propagation (R-curve KI vs. Δa) are performed at LixSi compositions x=0.5,1.0,1.5 for as-quenched/relaxed samples and at x=0.5,1.0 for samples created by discharging from higher Li compositions. In all cases, the fracture mechanism is void nucleation, growth, and coalescence. In as-quenched materials, with increasing Li content the plastic flow stress and elastic moduli decrease but void nucleation and growth happen at smaller stress, so that the initial fracture toughness KIc≈1.0MPam decreases slightly but the initial fracture energy JIc ≈ 10.5J/m2 is similar. After 10 nm of crack growth, the fracture toughnesses increase and become similar at KIc≈1.9MPam across all compositions. Plane-strain equi-biaxial expansion simulations of uncracked samples provide complementary information on void nucleation and growth. The simulations are interpreted within the framework of Gurson model for ductile fracture, which predicts JIc=ασyD where α ≃ 1 and D is the void spacing, and good agreement is found. In spite of flowing plastically, the fracture toughness of LixSi is low because voids nucleate within nano-sized distances ahead of the crack (D ≈ 1nm). Scaling simulation results to experimental conditions, reasonable agreement with experimentally-estimated fracture toughnesses is obtained. The discharging process facilitates void nucleation but decreases the flow stress (as shown previously), leading to enhanced fracture toughness at all levels of crack growth. Therefore, the fracture behavior of lithiated silicon at a given composition is not a material property but instead depends on the history of charging/discharging. These findings indicate that the mechanical behavior (flow and fracture) of lithiated Si must be interpreted within a fully rate- and history-dependent framework.

Abstract:Following an explosion of studies of silicon as a negative electrode for Li-ion batteries, the anomalous volumetric changes and fracture of lithiated single Si particles have attracted significant attention in various fields, including mechanics. However, in real batteries, lithiation occurs simultaneously in clusters of Si in a confined medium. Hence, understanding how the individual Si structures interact during lithiation in a closed space is necessary. Here, we demonstrate physical and mechanical interactions of swelling Si structures during lithiation using well-defined Si nanopillar pairs. Ex situ SEM and in situ TEM studies reveal that compressive stresses change the reaction kinetics so that preferential lithiation occurs at free surfaces when the pillars are mechanically clamped. Such mechanical interactions enhance the fracture resistance of lithiated Si by lessening the tensile stress concentrations in Si structures. This study will contribute to improved design of Si structures at the electrode level for high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:It is well-known that upon lithiation, both crystalline and amorphous Si transform to an armorphous Li(x)Si phase, which subsequently crystallizes to a (Li, Si) crystalline compound, either Li(15)Si(4) or Li(22)Si(5). Presently, the detailed atomistic mechanism of this phase transformation and the degradation process in nanostructured Si are not fully understood. Here, we report the phase transformation characteristic and microstructural evolution of a specially designed amorphous silicon (a-Si) coated carbon nanofiber (CNF) composite during the charge/discharge process using in situ transmission electron microscopy and density function theory molecular dynamic calculation. We found the crystallization of Li(15)Si(4) from amorphous Li(x)Si is a spontaneous, congruent phase transition process without phase separation or large-scale atomic motion, which is drastically different from what is expected from a classic nucleation and growth process. The a-Si layer is strongly bonded to the CNF and no spallation or cracking is observed during the early stages of cyclic charge/discharge. Reversible volume expansion/contraction upon charge/discharge is fully accommodated along the radial direction. However, with progressive cycling, damage in the form of surface roughness was gradually accumulated on the coating layer, which is believed to be the mechanism for the eventual capacity fade of the composite anode during long-term charge/discharge cycling.

Abstract:<p>Silicon (Si) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries with a high specific capacity, but the severe volume expansion and mechanical stress generated during electrochemical cycling hinders its practical application. Considering the coupled effect between electrochemical reaction and mechanical stress, the structure and stress evolution in lithiated crystalline and amorphous Si was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that the lithiation in both crystalline and amorphous Si is featured by the shift of the phase boundary. Lithiation is favoured along 〈1 1 0〉 crystallographic orientation in crystalline Si due to the atomic channels along this direction. The lithiation induced compressive stress is accumulated at the Si-Li phase boundary of crystalline Si and reaches −6 GPa, which slows down the lithiation process. On the other hand, the stress in amorphous Si can be mitigated through deformation at the phase boundary, and the lithiation speed is higher than that in crystalline Si. The lithiation in crystalline Si is related to a peeling-off mechanism, and Si clusters form and disintegrate during lithiation. More Si clusters are generated during the lithiation in crystalline Si than in amorphous Si.</p>

Abstract:Understanding and alleviating the chemo-mechanical degradation of silicon anodes is a formidable challenge due to the large volume change during operations. Here, for a comprehensive understanding of heterogeneous effects on chemo-mechanical behaviors at the single-particle level, in situ observation of single-crystalline silicon micropillar electrodes under the inhomogeneous extrinsic conditions, taken as an example, was made. The observation shows that the anisotropic deformation patterns and fracture starting sites are reshaped with the combination of the inhomogeneous electrochemical driving force for charge transfer at the interface between the silicon micropillar and the electrolyte, and crystal orientation-dependent lithiation dynamics. Also, the numerical simulation unravels the underlying mechanisms of deformation and fracture behaviors, and well predicts the relative depth of lithiation at the time of crack initiation under heterogeneous conditions. The results show that heterogeneities arising from extrinsic conditions may induce inhomogeneous mechanical damage and tailor lithiation degree at an active particle level, offering insights into designing large-volume-change battery particles with good mechanical integrity and electrochemical performance under heterogeneous impacts.

Abstract:Silicon is a promising anode material due to its high theoretical specific capacity, low lithiation potential and low lithium dendrite risk. Yet, the electrochemical performance of silicon anodes in solid-state batteries is still poor (for example, low actual specific capacity and fast capacity decay), hindering practical applications. Here the chemo-mechanical failure mechanisms of composite Si/Li 6 PS 5 Cl and solid-electrolyte-free silicon anodes are revealed by combining structural and chemical characterizations with theoretical simulations. The growth of the solid electrolyte interphase at the Si|Li 6 PS 5 Cl interface causes severe resistance increase in composite anodes, explaining their fast capacity decay. Solid-electrolyte-free silicon anodes show sufficient ionic and electronic conductivities, enabling a high specific capacity. However, microscale void formation during delithiation causes larger mechanical stress at the two-dimensional interfaces of these anodes than in composite anodes. Understanding these chemo-mechanical failure mechanisms of different anode architectures and the role of interphase formation helps to provide guidelines for the design of improved electrode materials.

Abstract:Rational design of silicon and carbon nanocomposite with a special topological feature has been demonstrated to be a feasible way for mitigating the capacity fading associated with the large volume change of silicon anode in lithium ion batteries. Although the lithiation behavior of silicon and carbon as individual components has been well understood, lithium ion transport behavior across a network of silicon and carbon is still lacking. In this paper, we probe the lithiation behavior of silicon nanoparticles attached to and embedded in a carbon nanofiber using in situ TEM and continuum mechanical calculation. We found that aggregated silicon nanoparticles show contact flattening upon initial lithiation, which is characteristically analogous to the classic sintering of powder particles by a neck-growth mechanism. As compared with the surface-attached silicon particles, particles embedded in the carbon matrix show delayed lithiation. Depending on the strength of the carbon matrix, lithiation of the embedded silicon nanoparticles can lead to the fracture of the carbon fiber. These observations provide insights on lithium ion transport in the network-structured composite of silicon and carbon and ultimately provide fundamental guidance for mitigating the failure of batteries due to the large volume change of silicon anodes.

Abstract:Large volume change and associated stress generation is known to cause failure of the silicon thin film anode used for Lithium-ion batteries after a few cycles. Experimental observations suggest that plastic deformation of the underlying Cu substrate and degradation of the active/inactive interface are the primary reasons responsible for the capacity fade. The goal of the present study is to examine the interplay between these mechanisms using a computational mechanics approach. In the present study, a novel multi-physics finite element framework has been developed to simulate the lithiation and de-lithiation induced failure of amorphous Si (a-Si) thin film on Cu foil. The numerical framework is based on the finite deformation of the active silicon wherein diffusion of lithium occurs, plastic deformation of the Cu foil, and debonding of the active/inactive interface. The effect of substrate property, interfacial energy and kinetics of interface degradation has been examined.

Abstract:Large-scale atomistic simulations were performed to investigate the fracture behaviors of amorphous lithiated silicon. The simulation results revealed that as the lithium concentration increases, there exists a transition in fracture mechanism from intrinsic nanoscale cavitation to extensive shear banding ahead of the crack tip. It is shown that the observed fracture-mechanism transition can be understood from the changing ratio between critical stresses for cavitation and plastic yield under increasing lithium content. Furthermore, we investigated the mechanistic details of cavitation (i.e. growth of nanovoids) in amorphous lithiated silicon using fully three-dimensional atomistic simulations. It was revealed that in a low lithium concentration environment, an initial void grows heterogeneously by merging with neighboring nucleated voids. However, at high lithium concentrations, the initial void continues to grow in a homogeneous mode. These atomistic mechanisms provide a fundamental understanding of how silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries fracture during lithiation.
Lithiation-enhanced Charge Transfer and Sliding Strength at the Silicon-Graphene Interface: A First-Principles Study

Abstract:The application of silicon as ultrahigh capacity electrodes in lithium-ion batteries has been limited by a number of mechanical degradation mechanisms including fracture, delamination and plastic ratcheting, as a result of its large volumetric change during lithiation and delithiation. Graphene coating is one feasible technique to mitigate the mechanical degradation of Si anode and improve its conductivity. In this paper, first-principles calculations are performed to study the atomic structure, charge transfer and sliding strength of the interface between lithiated silicon and graphene. Our results show that Li atoms segregate at the (lithiated) Si-graphene interface preferentially, donating electrons to graphene and enhancing the interfacial sliding resistance. Moreover, the interfacial cohesion and sliding strength can be further enhanced by introducing single-vacancy defects into graphene. These findings provide insights that can guide the design of stable and efficient anodes of silicon/graphene hybrids for energy storage applications.
Electro-chemo-mechanical behavior of lithium-ion battery electrodes

Abstract:Li-ion batteries are widely used in portable electronics and electric vehicles nowadays, since they have high energy densities and light-weighted designs. In pursuit of larger capacity, potential alloy materials such as Si, Sn, and Sb have been introduced as alternative anode materials to graphite. However, those electrodes experience irreversible mechanical degradation already after few charge/discharge cycles due to high stresses. Those stresses arise from changes in lattice dimensions and crystal structures, which are associated with overall volume changes and phase transformation. In this presentation, a Cahn–Hilliard-type diffusion model coupled with large strains is formulated [1, 2]. Thereby the electrochemical reaction is modeled through a modified Butler–Volmer equation to account for the influence of the phase change and mechanical stresses on the reaction fronts. Moreover, concentration-dependency of the elastic moduli and the anisotropy of the diffusivity are also covered. The 3D numerical simulations are carried out by isogeometric finite element methods in order to treat the high order differential equations in a straightforward sense. Illustrative simulation examples are demonstrated to reveal the electrochemical reactions on particle surfaces and phase interfaces. Results show that the ratio between the timescale of reaction and the diffusion can have a significant influence on phase segregation behavior, so does the anisotropy of diffusivity. In turn, the distribution of the lithium concentration greatly influences the reaction on the surface, especially when the phase interfaces appear on exterior surfaces. The reaction rate increases considerably at phase interfaces, due to the large lithium concentration gradient. In the next step, we introduce a fracture order parameter in the phasefield formulation to incorporate the crack in the particle [2, 3]. Simulation results demonstrate that the segregation of a Li-rich and a Li-poor phase during delithiation can drive the cracks to propagate. Acknowledgements.
