Abstract:The nanocrystalline ferrites Zn0.4Ni0.6Cr0.5LaxFe1.5-xO4 (x=0 similar to 0.10) were prepared with citrate precursor by sol-gel process. The thermolysis process of translating citrate precursor into crystalline was analyzed by means of DSC-TG. The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of the obtained products were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The results show that the temperature and the content of doped La have an obvious effect on the crystallite sizes, lattice parameter and morphology of samples. The magnetic properties of the samples can be also tailored by varying the content of La.

Abstract:This study explores the comprehensive characterization of Y 3+ and Co 2+ co-substituted LaFeO 3 nanoparticles synthesized via the sol-gel auto-combustion method. The synthesized samples, La 1-x Y x Fe 1-y Co y O 3 ( x = 0,0.10 and y = 0,0.03,0.05,0.07) were characterized by employing various techniques such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with EDX, Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM). The Raman and XRD analysis, supported by Rietveld refinement, provided conclusive evidence of a pure orthorhombic LaFeO 3 phase. Microstructural studies unveiled an agglomerate-type, irregular particle distribution, while EDX analysis confirmed the elemental composition. The XPS study gives evidence about the presence of both Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ oxidation states, and Co has a Co 3+ oxidation state. UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated enhanced visible light absorption, revealing a reduced bandgap with increasing doping percentages. VSM measurements exhibited M-H loops, substantiating the weak ferromagnetic nature of the materials. Moreover, these nanoparticles exhibit dielectric constants and low dielectric losses, making them suitable for use in devices for communication. Overall, these findings may offer valuable contributions to the understanding of nanomaterial characteristics for potential applications in diverse fields.

Abstract:Nano-ferrite materials with the chemical compositions Co 0.5 Cu 0.25 Mg 0.25 Fe 2-x Cr x O 4 (x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.25) were synthesized via the sol–gel auto-combustion method. These materials were then subjected to analytical characterizations to investigate their structural and magnetic properties. The study investigates the impact of Cr 3+ substitution on these nano-ferrites' structural and magnetic properties, a class of materials renowned for their versatile applications in modern technology. The sol–gel auto-combustion method, known for its precision in controlling composition and homogeneity at the nanoscale, was employed to synthesize these materials with varying levels of Cr 3+ substitution. The structural evolution of the synthesized samples was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), revealing insights into the crystalline phases, lattice parameters, and potential changes in the overall structure due to Cr 3+ incorporation.Magnetic properties, including saturation magnetization, coercivity, and magnetic anisotropy, were systematically investigated using vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). The intricate interplay between Cr 3+ ions and the existing metal ions within the nano ferrite matrix was explored to elucidate the observed magnetic transformations. The results indicate that Cr 3+ substitution induces significant alterations in the nano ferrites' crystal structure and magnetic behavior, providing valuable insights into the fundamental mechanisms governing these changes. Abstract:Cr 3 -substituted Co–Cu (Co 0.7 Cu 0.3 Fe 2−x Cr x O 4 ) and Cu-Co (Cu 0.7 Co 0.3 Fe 2−x Cr x O 4 ) nano ferrite composites were prepared using the sol–gel approach, where x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.25. We analysed their structural, DC electrical resistivity, magnetic, and dielectric properties comprehensively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate the formation of a single-phase spinel ferrite structure. The introduction of Cr 3+ ions leads to a reduction in lattice volume and crystallite size. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images reveal non-spherical particles on a uniform surface, with a decrease in grain size as Cr 3+ doping levels increase. The Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) patterns are consistent with the XRD results, confirming the presence of spinel ferrite. The variation significantly influences the magnetic properties in Cr 3+ doping. The saturation magnetization (Ms) decreases as the Cr 3+ content increases to x = 0.1. Beyond that, it continues to decrease with higher Cr 3+ concentrations. This behavior is attributed to the antiferromagnetic nature of Cr 3+ ions, which do not favour their occupation at the B sites. The DC resistivity increases with higher Cr 3+ concentrations and decreases with rising temperatures, indicating the semiconducting behavior of the ferrites. Furthermore, the loss tangent (tanδ) exhibits an exponential decrease with increasing frequency, pointing to typical Maxwell–Wagner-type dielectric dispersion driven by interfacial polarization.

Abstract:In this study, an effective sonochemical reactor was used to synthesize Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5 La x Fe 2− x O 4 nanoferrites with different compositions of x = 0.03, 0.06, 0.09, and 0.12. Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5 La x Fe 2− x O 4 nanoferrites were subjected to X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to investigate their optical, magnetic, electrical, and structural properties. An image of the formation of a cubic crystalline structure was obtained by XRD patterns. An increase in the amount of La 3+ ions in Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5 La x Fe 2− x O 4 nanoferrites could explain the decrease in crystallite size. The impedance analysis revealed the presence of pseudocapacitance and resistive behavior in Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5 La x Fe 2− x O 4 nanoferrites. Further, the addition of La 3+ ions led to a little decrease in the conductivity of Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5 La x Fe 2− x O 4 nanoferrites. The hysteresis loops enhanced the soft ferromagnetic behavior of Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5 La x Fe 2− x O 4 nanoferrites. A decrease in saturation magnetization and an increase in coercivity were observed with an increase in the La content of Mn 0.5 Cu 0.5 La x Fe 2− x O 4 nanoferrites.

Abstract:Schematic representation showing the synthesis route of Cu0.79Co0.21LaxFe2‐xO4. This research presents the successful synthesis of Cu0.79Co0.21LaxFe2‐xO4 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.8) (spinel ferrite) nanoparticles via the sol‐gel auto combustion technique, with varying La3+ dopant concentrations. In this study, the estimated crystallite size (D) is found to be in the range of (27.92–40.90) nm. The microstructural parameter determination in XRD data is improved using Rietveld refinement. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra exhibit two distinct metal stretching vibrational bands within (400–600) cm−1 range, a characteristic fingerprint region for all ferrites. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) analysis reveals the agglomeration of particles due to magnetic interactions and non‐uniform distribution of average particle sizes ranging from (1.06–1.87) μm. Energy Dispersive X‐Ray Analysis (EDX) validates the chemical composition's accuracy. Owing to the dilution effect resulting from the introduction of non‐magnetic La3+ ions into the ferrite structure, there is a reduction in the saturation magnetization value, decreasing from 37.28 to 6.24 emu g−1 in the Vibrating Sample Magnetometery (VSM) study. The electrochemical analysis reveals the impressive electrochemical characteristics of the newly developed ferrites, highlighting a remarkable specific capacitance of 270.0 F g−1. This finding positions them as highly promising contenders for a wide range of energy storage supercapacitor applications.

Abstract:The structural, morphological, magnetic, and dielectric properties of lanthanum substituted nickel ferrite (NiLa x Fe 2−x O 4 ) nanoparticles have been reported in this article. The amount of lanthanum substitution in NiLa x Fe 2−x O 4 sample was varied from x = 0.025 to 0.125. The nanocrystalline Ni–La ferrites were synthesized using a solution combustion reaction (SCR) method. The orthorhombic crystal system of space group Pnma (62) is shown as the single-phase in all samples through structural investigation utilizing an X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern. The observed trend indicates a positive correlation between the concentration of La and the corresponding rise in the predicted crystallite size values, which range from 60.5 nm to 65.2 nm. The nanoscale of the surface morphology has been confirmed by the utilisation of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Energy dispersive X-ray (EDAX) mapping provides the compositional evidence for the prepared Ni–La ferrites. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) determines the ionic state of the individual atoms present in these samples. It reveals that there are no changes in the ionic state of the parent component atoms by substituting La. EDAX and XPS evidence the purity of prepared NiLa x Fe 2−x O 4 samples without any other impurity elements. By regulating the composition of dopants, this research can substantiate the superparamagnetic characteristics of ferrites. The paramagnetic nature of lanthanum atoms involves in reducing the coercivity value. The dielectric measurement on NiLa x Fe 2−x O 4 samples reveals that La 3+ substitution effectively influence the electro-transport properties.

Abstract:Nowadays, spinel ferrites are the subject of research as their structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties are quite prominent for applications in the magnetic and electrical fields. In this work, nanoparticles of manganese-cobalt spinel ferrite (Mn 0.7 Co 0.3 La x Fe 2− x O 4 ), with 0–10% doping variation of lanthanum ions, are prepared by Sol–Gel auto-combustion route. The powder obtained from the synthesis was annealed in a muffle furnace at 600 °C for 4 h. XRD results confirmed the formation of the face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with a space group of Fd3m in La 3+ doped Mn-Co based spinel ferrites. The crystallite size was calculated from the Scherrer formula, found in the 9–14 nm range. Surface morphology was performed using SEM, revealing that non-uniform spherical shape grains with agglomeration are observed with the La 3+ ions doping. FTIR transmittance versus wave number pattern represents two absorption bands corresponding to tetrahedral and octahedral sites. The electrical properties are investigated in the 1 MHz to 3 GHz frequency range, and obtained results are described using the Maxwell–Wagner model. A decreasing trend in the impedance and dielectric constant is observed with the increasing applied frequency for all concentrations of La. The highest impedance value is found for the sample with La concentration x = 0.15. Electric modulus Cole–Cole plots showed grain and grain boundary contribution to the conduction process. The hysteresis loop from VSM data confirms that the prepared ferrites are soft magnetic materials. The increasing concentration of La 3+ ions significantly declines the coercive field and remanent magnetization. According to the findings, the prepared ferrite materials are appropriate for microwave and charge storage applications. On the other hand, La-doped Mn-Co ferrites are an excellent choice for soft magnetic applications such as transformer cores and magnetic storage devices.

Abstract:Polycrystalline samples of LaBa2Cu3−xLixOy (0⩽x⩽0.7) and La1+xBa2−xCu3−xLixOy (0⩽x⩽0.7) were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The structure and physical properties were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), resistivity, infrared (IR) transmission spectra and electronic spin resonance (ESR). With Li doping, an orthorhombic–tetragonal transition takes place as 0.3<x⩽0.5. While for La1+xBa2−xCu3−xLixOy, the system remains orthorhombic structure within the entire doping range. Li doping and Li, La co-doping induce charge redistribution in the two systems and the single Li doping causes Cu2+ spins to localize, especially for the x⩾0.5 samples. The changes of the IR and ESR spectra are analysed and discussed in detail.
The unusual magnetism of nanoparticle LaCoO3

Abstract:Bulk and nanoparticle powders of LaCoO3 (LCO) were synthesized, and their magnetic and structural properties were studied using SQUID magnetometry and neutron diffraction. The bulk and large nanoparticles exhibit weak ferromagnetism (FM) below T ~ 85K and a crossover from strong to weak antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations near a transition expressed in the lattice parameters, To ~ 40K. This crossover does not occur in the smallest nanoparticles; instead, the magnetic behavior is predominantly ferromagnetic. The amount of FM in the nanoparticles depends on the amount of Co3O4 impurity phase, which induces tensile strain on the LCO lattice. A core-interface model is introduced, with the core region exhibiting the AFM crossover and with FM in the interface region near surfaces and impurity phases.

Abstract:In this article, we substituted La3+ ions to explore the structural, magnetic, and DC electrical resistivity properties of Ni0.5Zn0.4Cd0.1Fe2-xLaxO4 (x = 0.0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08) nano-structured spinel ferrites. We employed X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) with Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), and electrical measurements to characterize the studied samples, which were synthesized using the sol–gel auto-combustion process. XRD analysis confirmed that the prepared materials formed a single-phase nanostructure. Using Debye-Scherer's formula, we calculated the average crystallite size, which ranged from 29.01 to 21.52 nm. FESEM images demonstrated that each sample exhibited spherical nanocrystalline behavior. The variations of the prepared samples were confirmed constitutionally by EDX. The FTIR data revealed two absorption bands for all synthesized materials at υ1 = 562.18 to 590.51 cm−1 and υ2 = 410.18 to 430.51 cm−1, corresponding to the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the spinel structure, respectively. Vibrant sample magnetometry spectra were utilized to investigate how La3+-doping affects the magnetic characteristics of NiZnCd ferrite. Due to enhanced La3+-doping, saturation magnetization, and coercivity values decreased. The La3+ doping of NiZnCd nano ferrites resulted in changes in saturation magnetization (from 83.66 to 69.57 emu/g), coercivity (from 33.75 to 60.51 Oe), and remanence magnetization (from 29.62 to 33.12 emu/g). These variations suggest the potential utility of the samples for magnetic recording and memory applications. The semiconducting behavior has been confirmed by the DC electrical resistivity measured values using a two-probe method. Data on DC electrical resistivity were also utilized to determine carrier concentration and activation energy, establishing a connection with La3+ replacement.

Abstract:This report investigates the effect of La doping on the structural, microstructural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and mechanical properties of Mg 1/3 Ni 1/3 Co 1/3 Fe 2-x La x O 4 ( x = 0.00, 0.02, and 0.08) spinel ferrites prepared via the wet co-precipitation method. The prepared samples attained a single cubic ferrite phase; except for the pure sample, additional minor traces of hematite secondary phase were formed. The La 3+ dopants influenced the expansion of the lattice from 8.351 to 8.372 Å and the reduction of the crystallite size from 30.21 to 14.02 nm, as the dopant concentration increased from zero to x = 0.08. The morphology of the samples depicted highly agglomerated spherical nanoparticles, in which the agglomeration increased with the doping concentration due to the magnetic interaction and size effects. The local physical properties were investigated using Mössbauer spectrometry analysis at 300 K and 77 K by measuring the isomer shift, the quadrupolar shift, and the hyperfine field. The appearance of sextet peaks was registered for all the samples, accompanied by a paramagnetic doublet for x = 0.08 sample at 300 K. Moreover, the La 3+ dopants enhance the lattice distortion due to the mismatch of their ionic radii with Fe 3+ ions, causing a decrease in the hyperfine field from 46.9 to 26.0 T, at 300 K. The elemental composition, valence, and cationic distribution were investigated using X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed a migration of Fe 3+ ions from octahedral to tetrahedral sites upon La doping, which was matched by Mössbauer and XPS measurements. Additionally, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was employed to determine the force constants, elasticity, energy, thermodynamic, and mechanical parameters. The La dopants have enhanced the elastic moduli by 11% and the Debye temperature by 4% with x = 0.08 concentration. The Vickers microhardness measurements showed a reverse indentation size effect of the prepared samples, assured by Meyer's rule. Also, it is revealed that La 3+ dopants have boosted the Vickers microhardness, as it increased from 6.951 to 7.520 GPa, as La 3+ concentration increased from zero to x = 0.08. This enhancement was correlated to the grain size reduction, following the Hall–Petch relation. These findings suggest the usage of the synthesized La-doped tri-ferrites for industrial applications.

Abstract:Abstract Y3+-doped cobalt ferrite nanoparticles, CoYxFe2-xO4 (x=0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15), were synthesized using the sol-gel auto-combustion technique. Single-phase cubic spinel structure was confirmed by the X-ray diffraction technique. The lattice parameter increased with the increase of Y3+ content in the cobalt ferrite and varied from 8.3876 to 8.4271 Å. FE-SEM images showed that the samples had distinct crystalline nanoparticles of spherical shape with small agglomeration. EDAX results showed good agreement with the particularized composition. Magnetic measurement using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) recorded a reduction in saturation magnetization (Ms) and coercivity (Hc) by Y3+ substitution. The values of Ms and Hc ranged from 66.61 to 17.52 emu/g and 1168.9 to 801.9 Oe, respectively. The electrical properties of Y3+-substituted cobalt ferrite were studied by measuring the dielectric constant and loss. With increasing frequency, the value of the dielectric constant decreased, as a natural behavior of the ferrite material.

Abstract:The nanoparticle spinel ferrites Mg0.5Zn0.5CexLaxFe2-2xO4 (x = 0.0, 0.0125, 0.025, 0.0375, 0.05) were synthesized by mean of co-precipitation method. These magnetic nanoparticles were sintered at 750 °C for 8 h. XRD patterns confirmed the formation of the cubic spinel structure of prepared nanoparticles. The lattice constant of nanoparticle ferrites increased, while crystallite size decreased with doping content (x). Pure ferrite sample has an optical bandgap of 2.61 eV, and it increases from 1.73 to 2.17 eV as concentration (x) is changed from 0.0125 to 0.05. The electrical dc resistivity is of the order of 1010 Ω cm for doping content (x) from 0 to 0.0375 and has a maximum value of 5.48617 × 1012 Ω cm for content x = 0.05. The Curie temperature (Tc) decreased 433–373 K as concentration (x) was increased. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss, and impedance are reduced with the increase of frequency. The dielectric constant, as well as the dielectric loss diminished while impedance increased as doping of cerium and lanthanum, was increased.

Abstract:The multifunctional copper and lanthanum doped CoFe 2 O 4 nanoferrites of chemical formula, Co 1-x Cu x La y Fe 2-y O 4 , ( x = 0.0–0.04; y = 0.0–0.03) were fabricated via the sol-gel auto-combustion (SG) approach to investigate the optical, magnetic, microstructural, photocatalytic, and antibacterial traits. X-ray diffraction analysis verified the formation of a cubic phased structure for the synthesized materials with no additional impurities. The SEM pictures of CoFe 2 O 4 and Co 0.97 Cu 0.03 La 0.02 Fe 0.98 O 4 samples show the spherical shape like grains having a grain size of 90.98 and 62.74 nm. In the Raman spectra, five Raman active modes were seen in range of 200–800 cm -1 which gives a strong validation toward the spinel cubic symmetry. According to magnetic traits, a soft magnetic behavior in the values of saturation magnetization ( M s = 81.32–104.61 emu/g) and retentivity ( M r = 35.80–49.03 emu/g) with a large coercivity ( H c = 1394.52–1892.79 Oe) was found. With the Cu and La substitution, the band gap drops from 1.73 to 1.48 eV. Based on the photodegradation study, the doped ferrite nanomaterials performed better under the specific reaction conditions (catalysts dosage: 0.03g, dye dosage: 10 mgL -1 , pH: 4). The Co 0.96 Cu 0.04 La 0.03 Fe 0.97 O 4 nanoferrite shows the higher photocatalytic performance of 93.75% due to its smaller energy band gap. The photodegradation efficiency of CoFe 2 O 4 doped with Cu and La against the Congo red (CR) dye has increased from 87.08 to 93.75% in 60 min of natural sunlight irradiation. Throughout the 5 repeated reuse cycles, the catalyst efficacy did not noticeably decline. In contrast to the undoped CoFe 2 O 4 and doped Co 0.97 Cu 0.03 La 0.02 Fe 0.98 O 4 nanoferrites which exhibited no zone of inhibition (ZOI) for the Staphylococcus aureus , the developed Co 0.98 Cu 0.02 La 0.01 Fe 0.99 O 4 and Co 0.96 Cu 0.04 La 0.03 Fe 0.97 O 4 nanoferrites showed ZOI against the Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strain. With all excellent photodegradation, and antibacterial traits, the undoped and Cu/La doped cobalt nanoferrites works as a new door for environmental and biological applications.

Abstract:Cr-doped Bi0.9La0.1Fe1-xCrxO3 with x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20 is fabricated by the sol-gel auto-combustion. The rhombohedral phase of pure and doped bismuth ferrite is confirmed during structural analysis. The structural parameters are further refined using X’pert High score plus by calculating the atomic positions and different profile factors which assured the reliability of the structural data. As Cr content is increased, it results the better crystallinity with uniform distribution of multi-shape grains. The size of grains varied which affected the microstructural characteristics of the parent compositions. The presence of constituent elements with a stoichiometric ratio is established by elemental analysis which guarantees elemental purity of prepared samples. The introduction of La followed by increasing contents of Cr in the parent composition improved the magnetic response. Ferroelectric analysis revealed that both saturation and remanent polarizations are increased with increasing doping levels. The calculation of recoverable and energy loss density ensured that the parent composition was more suitable for the energy storage devices. The multiferroic properties of synthesized samples are comprehensively explored to evaluate the worth of these materials for futuristic energy storage and multistate devices.

The substitution of Mn by Cu affects the Mn-O bond length and Mn-O-Mn bond angle resulting from the minimization of the distortion of the MnO6 octahedron. Resistivity measurements show that a metal to insulator transition occurs for the x ≥ 0.15 samples. The x = 0.15 sample shows the highest MR(≈80%), which might result from the co-existence of Cu3+/Cu2+ and the dilution effect of Cu-doping on the double exchange interaction. Abstract:In the present work, we synthesized the Cu-doped CoFe2O4 (Co1-xCuxFe2O4) nanoparticles with × = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6, by employing the citrate precursor method. The X-ray Diffraction (XRD) pattern confirmed the pure cubic structure formation with the Fd-3m space group. To know the structural purity of each sample as well as the distribution of cations, Rietveld refinement was carried out. The crystallite size increases from 39.55 nm to 41.80 nm upto x = 0.2 and with further doping of Cu2+ ions it decreases to 36.27 nm. Similar variation is observed in the lattice parameter where the value of ‘ a ’ first increases from 8.378 Å to 8.381 Å and then decreases to 8.377 Å. The development of a non-uniform grain is seen using scanning electron microscope (SEM), which reveals the reduction in grain size. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the two peaks v 1 and v 2 for all the samples around 541 cm−1 and 408 cm−1, respectively, which further decreases to 532.5 cm−1 and 402.5 cm−1 as the dopant ion concentration increases. The Stiffness constant, and Elastic modulus decrease with doping whereas, the Poisson’s ratio and Pugh’s ratio show a constant value of around 0.249 and 1.660, respectively. Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) analysis shows a decrease in saturation magnetization ( σ s ) value from 76.85 emu/g to 43.62 emu/g. The net magnetic moment ( n B ) decreases from 3.29 μ B to 1.85 μ B and the effective anisotropy constant value decreases from 10.672erg/g to 4.461erg/g. Thus, the prepared nanoparticles provide a way forward for their industrial applications.

Abstract:LaCoO3 (LCO) nanoparticles were synthesized and their magnetic and structural properties were examined using SQUID magnetometery and neutron diffraction. The nanoparticles exhibit ferromagnetic long-range order beginning at T_C approximately 87K that persists to low temperatures. This behavior is contrasted with the ferromagnetism of bulk LCO, which also starts at T_C approximately 87K but is suppressed below a second transition at T_o approximately 37K, due to a structural phase transition. The ferromagnetism in both systems is attributed to the tensile stress from particle surfaces and impurity phase interfaces. This stress locally increases the Co-O-Co bond angle gamma, and competes with the thermal contraction of the lattice. It has recently been shown that LCO loses long-range ferromagnetic order when gamma decreases below the critical value gamma_c = 162.8 degrees. Consistent with this model, we show that gamma in nanoparticles remains larger than gamma_c at low temperatures, likely a consequence of all spins being in close proximity to surfaces or interfaces.
