Abstract:The review paper starts with the introduction to hydrogels along with broad literature survey covering different modes of synthesis including high energy radiation methods. After that, paper covered broad classification of the hydrogels depending upon the basis of their source of origin, method of synthesis, type of cross-linking present and ionic charges on bound groups. Another advanced category response triggered hydrogels, which includes pH, temperature, electro, and light and substrate responsive hydrogels was also studied. Presented paper summarises chemical structure, properties, and synthesis of different kinds of hydrogels. Main focus was given to the preparation super absorbents such as: Semi-interpenetrating networks (semi-IPNs), Interpenetrating networks (IPNs) and cross-linked binary graft copolymers (BGCPs). The weak mechanical properties and easy degradation limit the uses of bio-based -hydrogels in biomedical field. Their properties can be improved through different chemical and physical methods. These methods were also discussed in the current research paper. Also, it includes development of hydrogels as controlled drug delivery devices, as implants and biomaterials to replace malfunctioned body parts along with their use in several other applications listed in the literature. Literature survey on the application of hydrogels in different fields like biomedical, nano-biotechnology, tissue engineering, drug delivery and agriculture was also carried out.

Abstract:Hydrogels are natural or synthetic polymeric networks, insoluble in water, or sometimes found as colloidal gel where the dispersion medium is water. Hydrogels can absorb approximately 90% water and are regarded as superabsorbent materials; hence these resemble the natural living tissues more than any other biological- based materials. Because of their ability to absorb water, they are used to investigate the properties of swollen polymer networks and have wide applications in different fields such as contact lenses, drug delivery systems for proteins, and many others. To make them biodegradable, labile chemical bonds are introduced in the main backbone through crosslinking. These unstable bonds can then be broken down by various agents chemically, physically, or enzymatically, generally by hydrolysis or through some controlled parameters. Hydrogels are frequently used in the medical field. For instance, pH and temperature-sensitive hydrogels may be used in the targeted drug delivery which have been explained in detail in the current review. The other applications of hydrogels are also explained with regard to personal health care products, biomedical, bio-separation, wound healing, tissue engineering, and drug delivery, etc., which make them promising materials in pharmaceutics. They are also used in agriculture and environmental remediation. The purpose of this review is to expose their salient features and biomedical applications.

Abstract:Hydrogels are a class of biomaterial that can “take in” large quantities of aqueous media and swells many times larger than its original size without dissolving in the media. SPHs are a new generation of hydrogels containing a 3D network of cross-linked polymers having pore size more than 100 μm as compared to 10 nm to 10 μm pores of conventional gels. These are more complex in nature than conventional hydrogels and prepared by using a suitable blend of monomers and different additives. SPHs have been extensively employed in sustained and control drug delivery systems along with many recent biomedical applications such as in tissue engineering, immunotherapy, arthritis and ophthalmic drug delivery. Scientists are constantly working on improving the features and properties of SPHs to enable them more suitable for therapeutic and biomedical applications. The present study briefly reviews the composition, evaluation and applications of SPHs in different areas. Applications are facilitated by the fact that SPHs are generally biocompatible in nature and resemble natural living tissue more than any other class of synthetic biomaterial.

Abstract:Hydrogel products are a class of polymeric materials with a hydrophilic structure that allows them to store huge amounts of water in three-dimensional networks. The presence of hydrophilic groups such as NH2, COOH, OH, CONH2, -CONH-, and -SO3H, as well as the capillary effect and osmotic pressure, contribute to the network's hydrophilicity. Weaker forces, like van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds, can frequently act as cross-links, resulting in swelling networks that behave like hydrogels. Depending on their physical and chemical structure, hydrogels can be classified in a variety of ways. Material scientists and biological researchers continue to be fascinated by hydrogels today, and significant progress has been made in terms of formulations and applications. However, many articles and technical studies dealing with hydrogel products from an engineering standpoint were investigated to provide a broad overview of the technological features of this rapidly expanding interdisciplinary field of study. The major goal of this paper is to examine the literature on the technologies used in the creation, categorization, and use of hydrogels.

Abstract:Hydrogel products constitute a group of polymeric materials, the hydrophilic structure of which renders them capable of holding large amounts of water in their three-dimensional networks. Extensive employment of these products in a number of industrial and environmental areas of application is considered to be of prime importance. As expected, natural hydrogels were gradually replaced by synthetic types due to their higher water absorption capacity, long service life, and wide varieties of raw chemical resources. Literature on this subject was found to be expanding, especially in the scientific areas of research. However, a number of publications and technical reports dealing with hydrogel products from the engineering points of view were examined to overview technological aspects covering this growing multidisciplinary field of research. The primary objective of this article is to review the literature concerning classification of hydrogels on different bases, physical and chemical characteristics of these products, and technical feasibility of their utilization. It also involved technologies adopted for hydrogel production together with process design implications, block diagrams, and optimized conditions of the preparation process. An innovated category of recent generations of hydrogel materials was also presented in some details.

Abstract:Hydrogels are three-dimensional structures that serve as substitutes for the extracellular matrix (ECM) and possess outstanding physicochemical and biochemical characteristics. They are gaining importance in regenerative medicine because of their similarity to the natural extracellular matrix in terms of moisture content and wound and tissue healing permeability. Tissue engineering advancements have resulted in the development of flexible hydrogels that mimic the dynamic characteristics of the ECM. Several approaches have been applied to produce hydrogels from biopolymers with enhanced functional and structural characteristics for different applications in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TERM). Abstract:A single because of their distinctive traits, hydrogels have become the most preferred materials for biomedical applications today. Abstract:Hydrogels are attractive biomaterials with favorable characteristics due to their water uptake capacity. However, hydrogel properties are determined by the cross-linking degree and nature, the tacticity, and the crystallinity of the polymer. These biomaterials can be sorted out according to the internal structure and by their response to external factors. In this case, the internal interaction can be reversible when the internal chains are led by physicochemical interactions. These physical hydrogels can be synthesized through several techniques such as crystallization, amphiphilic copolymers, charge interactions, hydrogen bonds, stereo-complexing, and protein interactions. In contrast, the internal interaction can be irreversible through covalent cross-linking. Synthesized hydrogels by chemical interactions present a high cross-linking density and are employed using graft copolymerization, reactive functional groups, and enzymatic methods. Moreover, specific smart hydrogels have also been denoted by their external response, pH, temperature, electric, light, and enzyme. This review deeply details the type of hydrogel, either the internal structure or the external response. Furthermore, we detail some of the main applications of these hydrogels in the biomedicine field, such as drug delivery systems, scaffolds for tissue engineering, actuators, biosensors, and many other applications.

Abstract:Hydrogels are crosslinked polymer chains with three-dimensional (3D) network structures, which can absorb relatively large amounts of fluid. Because of the high water content, soft structure, and porosity of hydrogels, they closely resemble living tissues. Research in recent years shows that hydrogels have been applied in various fields, such as agriculture, biomaterials, the food industry, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. Along with the underlying technology improvements of hydrogel development, hydrogels can be expected to be applied in more fields. Although not all hydrogels have good biodegradability and biocompatibility, such as synthetic hydrogels (polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, polyethylene glycol hydrogels, etc.), their biodegradability and biocompatibility can be adjusted by modification of their functional group or incorporation of natural polymers. Hence, scientists are still interested in the biomedical applications of hydrogels due to their creative adjustability for different uses. In this review, we first introduce the basic information of hydrogels, such as structure, classification, and synthesis. Then, we further describe the recent applications of hydrogels in 3D cell cultures, drug delivery, wound dressing, and tissue engineering.

Abstract:Hydrogels are cross-linked polymeric networks that absorb or release water in response to some stimuli and are susceptible to cellular attachment and can be remodeled into complex structures. The properties of hydrogels can be tuned by gentle use of copolymers and cross-linkers. These hydrogels are designed in such a way that they are degraded and subsequently removed from the work area. The hydrogels have ability to carry small amounts of drugs, proteins and other desirable components for medical and other purposes. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and its stereoisomers are nonfunctional-hydrophobic polymers that are applicable in biomedical sector. Nevertheless, a high glass transition temperature of PLA limits its application in biomedical field. They, therefore are conjugated or copolymerized with hydrophilic polymers like polyethylene glycol (PEG) and chitosan to form composite hydrogels. The PEG is used to polymerize PLA to form thermo-sensitive hydrogels. Similarly, polyurethanes, polysaccharides, oligomers and peptides are employed for hydrogels formation through physical and chemical routes. The existence of functional moieties in polysaccharides like carboxyl, amine and hydroxyl offers easy cross-linking and conjugation. In addition to this, the use of polysaccharides as hydrophilic part of hydrogels engages the aqueous media which exhibits high swelling capacity of polysaccharides. The PLA based thermo-responsive hydrogels have effectively been used for wound healing, tissue engineering as well as drug control and release. This review gives a thorough focus on recent developments in PLA based hydrogels formation, their properties and possible biomedical applications.

Abstract:Hydrogels are polymeric three-dimensional network structures with high water content. Due to their superior biocompatibility and low toxicity, hydrogels play a significant role in the biomedical fields. Hydrogels are categorized by the composition from natural polymers to synthetic polymers. To meet the complicated situation in the biomedical applications, suitable host–guest supramolecular interactions are rationally selected. This review will have an introduction of hydrogel classification based on the formulation molecules, and then a discussion over the rational design of the intelligent hydrogel to the environmental stimuli such as temperature, irradiation, pH, and targeted biomolecules. Further, the applications of rationally designed smart hydrogels in the biomedical field will be presented, such as tissue repair, drug delivery, and cancer therapy. Finally, the perspectives and the challenges of smart hydrogels will be outlined.

Abstract:A prominent research topic in contemporary advanced functional materials science is the production of smart materials based on polymers that may independently adjust their physical and/or chemical characteristics when subjected to external stimuli. Smart hydrogels based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) demonstrate distinct thermoresponsive features close to a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) that enhance their capability in various biomedical applications such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and wound dressings. Nevertheless, they have intrinsic shortcomings such as poor mechanical properties, limited loading capacity of actives, and poor biodegradability. Formulation of PNIPAM with diverse functional constituents to develop hydrogel composites is an efficient scheme to overcome these defects, which can significantly help for practicable application. This review reports on the latest developments in functional PNIPAM-based smart hydrogels for various biomedical applications. The first section describes the properties of PNIPAM-based hydrogels, followed by potential applications in diverse fields. Ultimately, this review summarizes the challenges and opportunities in this emerging area of research and development concerning this fascinating polymer-based system deep-rooted in chemistry and material science.

Abstract:Hydrogels with tailor-made swelling-shrinkable properties have aroused considerable interest in numerous biomedical domains. For example, as swelling is a key issue for blood and wound extrudates absorption, the transference of nutrients and metabolites, as well as drug diffusion and release, hydrogels with high swelling capacity have been widely applicated in full-thickness skin wound healing and tissue regeneration, and drug delivery. Nevertheless, in the fields of tissue adhesives and internal soft-tissue wound healing, and bioelectronics, non-swelling hydrogels play very important functions owing to their stable macroscopic dimension and physical performance in physiological environment. Moreover, the negative swelling behavior (i.e., shrinkage) of hydrogels can be exploited to drive noninvasive wound closure, and achieve resolution enhancement of hydrogel scaffolds. In addition, it can help push out the entrapped drugs, thus promote drug release. However, there still has not been a general review of the constructions and biomedical applications of hydrogels from the viewpoint of swelling-shrinkable properties. Therefore, this review summarizes the tactics employed so far in tailoring the swelling-shrinkable properties of hydrogels and their biomedical applications. And a relatively comprehensive understanding of the current progress and future challenge of the hydrogels with different swelling-shrinkable features is provided for potential clinical translations.

Abstract:Super absorbency is the extraordinary capacity of a substance to absorb and retain a large amount of liquid. Hydrophobic polymer chains are cross-linked to form superabsorbent polymer (SAP) hydrogels. Due to greater ability to absorb water, extended lifespans, and availability of a wide range of basic chemical resources, synthetic hydrogels gradually displaced natural hydrogels. These superabsorbent polymer hydrogels are in usage around the world in various applications for more than 50 years. Hydrogels are referred to as intelligent or smart materials since they respond to certain environmental stimuli and undergo a large volume phase shift in response to specific physical and chemical stimuli. The various forms of hydrogels and their wider applications are currently of research interests. The main goal of this review is to assess the literature on the various classification systems for hydrogels, their physical and chemical properties, and the technical viability of using them in civil engineering applications based on the newest publications in this field and the role of hydrogels as a new building material promoting environmental sustainability. Abstract:Hydrogel membranes (HMs) are defined and applied as hydrated porous media constructed of hydrophilic polymers for a broad range of applications. Fascinating physiochemical properties, unique porous architecture, water-swollen features, biocompatibility, and special water content dependent transport phenomena in semi-permeable HMs make them appealing constructs for various applications from wastewater treatment to biomedical fields. Water absorption, mechanical properties, and viscoelastic features of three-dimensional (3D) HM networks evoke the extracellular matrix (ECM). On the other hand, the porous structure with controlled/uniform pore-size distribution, permeability/selectivity features, and structural/chemical tunability of HMs recall membrane separation processes such as desalination, wastewater treatment, and gas separation. Furthermore, supreme physiochemical stability and high ion conductivity make them promising to be utilised in the structure of accumulators such as batteries and supercapacitors. In this review, after summarising the general concepts and production processes for HMs, a comprehensive overview of their applications in medicine, environmental engineering, sensing usage, and energy storage/conservation is well-featured. The present review concludes with existing restrictions, possible potentials, and future directions of HMs.

Abstract:Hydrogels are known for their high water retention capacity and biocompatibility and have become essential materials in tissue engineering and drug delivery systems. This review explores recent advancements in hydrogel technology, focusing on innovative types such as self-healing, tough, smart, and hybrid hydrogels, each engineered to overcome the limitations of conventional hydrogels. Self-healing hydrogels can autonomously repair structural damage, making them well-suited for applications in dynamic biomedical environments. Tough hydrogels are designed with enhanced mechanical properties, enabling their use in load-bearing applications such as cartilage regeneration. Smart hydrogels respond to external stimuli, including changes in pH, temperature, and electromagnetic fields, making them ideal for controlled drug release tailored to specific medical needs. Hybrid hydrogels, made from both natural and synthetic polymers, combine bioactivity and mechanical resilience, which is particularly valuable in engineering complex tissues. Despite these innovations, challenges such as optimizing biocompatibility, adjusting degradation rates, and scaling up production remain. This review provides an in-depth analysis of these emerging hydrogel technologies, highlighting their transformative potential in both tissue engineering and drug delivery while outlining future directions for their development in biomedical applications.
