Abstract:Dear Editor, The recent article “Weaponized sex: Defensive pseudo-erotic aggression in the service of safety” by Dr. Richard Kluft, JTD May–June, 2017, introduced a term “weaponized sex” to describe a challenging clinical dynamic. Language is a powerful tool, responsible for not just describing, but also creating cultures, attitudes and power dynamics. While we think that it is legitimate to address this clinical issue, we are concerned about the use of language, particularly when it describes the behavior of vulnerable traumatized women as “provocative,” alongside conceptualizing this as “weaponized sex.” The use of the term appears ambiguous. At times, discussion (and the article title itself) implies that the sexual behavior might be an instrumental strategy used to create a sense of safety/control, a defensive tool, but not meant to harm anyone else. Certainly, the links with Bonobo sexuality implies a “peace-making” and connecting strategy. Yet the use of the word “weapon” risks being offensive and blameful, leaving patients feeling judged, shamed, and pathologized. It is suggestive of a battle metaphor for therapy, and thus risks creating a therapeutic power dynamic of “us vs. them” (therapist vs. client). Given that weapons imply a risk of injury, what does such a term prime in the therapist’s mind? How could this affect therapy? Overall, we feel that the term “sexualized protector parts” is a more accurate reflection of the intention and purpose of these traumatized dissociated parts. Furthermore, analysis of this phenomena from a gender perspective is essential and we feel reluctant to assume that discussion and critique from a gender-sensitive perspective will shut down discussion, as Dr. Kluft reports has happened in the past. We note that the article addresses only the female patient/male therapist dyad. An explanation and exploration of this would have been useful, given males also have sexualized protector parts.
