Abstract:Injecting nitrogen into goaf has been widely adopted for preventing fire hazards in coal mines. In this paper, the coupling relation between different locations of negative pressure of cross-cut drainage and nitrogen injection was investigated. The minefield data collection was carried out by an in situ beam tube system on the intake airway and return airway of the mine goaf. The validated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model that was secondarily modified by on-site collected data was applied for further research. It is demonstrated that the area of the spontaneous combustion zone generally shows a sharp decline first, then tends to stabilize, and finally has a slight drop and rise with the increasing nitrogen injection time. It is obvious that the location of the negative pressure of cross-cut exerts a significant influence on the optimal nitrogen injection location and time. When the cross-cut is located in the center of the air leakage zone, spontaneous combustion zone, and asphyxiation zone of goaf, the optimal nitrogen injection location and time correspond to the P2 (25 m, 1200 min), P3 (30 m, 120 min), and P4 (35m, 1800 min), respectively. According to the simulation result, the specific relation between the optimal nitrogen injection point N(x) and the distance from the working distance of the cross-cut (x) by Newton interpolation polynomial analysis was figured out and verified that N(x) = 24.70808 + 0.293356x - 0.001436x 2. It is hoped that the result can provide scientific guidance for coal mine fire prevention and control with nitrogen injection.

Abstract:Under the gob-side entry retaining mining mode with roof cutting and pressure relief (GERRC), the gob and retained roadway section are interconnected to create an open area. Owing to the increased airflow, the coal remnants in the gob are more prone to spontaneous combustion. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of oxygen concentration within a gob and identify optimal parameters for nitrogen injection. The engineering context was the "110 method" introduced in the 1201 working face of the South Five mining area at Daxing. Computational fluid dynamics simulation software was used to analyze the effects of various nitrogen injection treatment parameters on the overall performance of the gob, including their impact on oxygen distribution. The simulation results showed that air leakage within the gob primarily originates from the working face adjacent to the intake roadway, as well as gaps within the retained roadway. The increased air leakage causes the high O2 concentration range in the gob to expand, and the retained roadway section is connected to an area with a high concentration of oxygen near the working face, which increases the risk of residual coal spontaneous combustion. The results show that the optimal nitrogen injection conditions for inerting and reducing the risk of spontaneous combustion within the gob require an injection quantity of 500 m3/h, with the injection point located at a depth of 60 m. With these parameters, the range of the oxidation zone was significantly reduced. To monitor the O2 concentration and temperature change curves in the gob during the project implementation, a bundle tube monitoring system was used, considering the actual mining situation. By varying the nitrogen injection spacing and quantity, we found that injecting nitrogen at a spacing of 30 m and at a quantity of 500 m3/h effectively placed most areas of the gob in the suffocation zone, reducing the risk of spontaneous combustion of residual coal. The accuracy of the simulation was verified. The study offers valuable insights into improving safety in coal mines and reducing spontaneous combustion incidents, providing important reference significance for fire prevention and control.
Distribution of spontaneous combustion three zones and optimization of nitrogen injection location in the goaf of a fully mechanized top coal caving face

Abstract:In order to effectively prevent and control spontaneous combustion of residual coal in the goaf and reduce the waste of nitrogen caused by setting the position of nitrogen injection, 1303 fully mechanized coal caving faces of the Jinniu Mine are studied. By deploying a bundle tube monitoring system in the inlet air side and return air side of the goaf, changes in gas concentration in the goaf are continuously monitored. In addition, the distribution area for spontaneous combustion three-zone in the goaf is divided into heat dissipation zone, oxidized spontaneous combustion zone, and suffocation zone. Simulations from the COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3 software provide insight based on the three zones division standard of spontaneous combustion in the goaf. The gradual deepening of the nitrogen injection position into the goaf affects the lower limit of the oxidized spontaneous combustion zone significantly, but the impact on the upper limit of the oxidized spontaneous combustion zone is not obvious and is negligible. With regard to the width of the oxidized spontaneous combustion zone, it initially decreases followed by a gradual increase. Numerical calculations suggest the optimal nitrogen injection position is 40 m from the roof cutting line, with an oxidized spontaneous combustion zone width of 28 m. Based on the simulation analysis results, nitrogen injection controlling measures have been adopted for spontaneous combustion of residual coal in the goaf of the 1303 fully mechanized coal caving faces, and coal self-ignition in the goaf has been successfully extinguished.

Investigation on Key Parameters of N2 Injection to Enhance Coal Seam Gas Drainage (N2-ECGD)

Abstract:Practice shows that CO2/N2-ECBM is an effective technology to enhance coalbed methane. However, there are few field tests in which the technology is applied to enhance the gas drainage in underground coal mines, and the effect is uncertain. In this study, firstly, the reasons for the decrease of gas drainage efficiency in the exhaustion period were analyzed based on the theory of fluid mechanics. Secondly, the mechanism of N2 injection to enhance coal seam gas drainage (N2-ECGD) was discussed: with the gradual decrease of gas pressure in the drainage process, coal seam gas enters a low-pressure state, the driving force of flow is insufficient, and the drainage enters the exhaustion period. The nitrogen injection technology has triple effects of "promoting flow", "increasing permeability" and "replacing". Thirdly, the numerical simulations of the nitrogen pressure on drainage effect were carried out based on the fully coupled model. The results show that the higher the nitrogen pressure, the greater the displacement effect between injection and drainage boreholes, the larger the effective range. Finally, a field test of N2-ECGD was carried out in the Liu Zhuang coal mine in Huainan Coalfield, China. The results show that N2 injection can significantly enhance the gas flow rate and CH4 flow rate in the drainage boreholes, and the coal seam gas content decreased 39.73% during N2 injection, which is about 2.6–3.3 times that of the conventional drainage. The research results provide an important guidance for promoting the application of N2-ECGD in underground coal mines.

Abstract:N 2 injection to enhance coal seam gas drainage is an effective technology for coalbed methane recovery. Nevertheless, there is a limited body of research addressing the application of ECBM technology for gas management in low permeability coal seams within underground coal mines, and the effect is uncertain. Additionally, numerical simulators have been challenged to accurately predict methane emissions during gas injection and replacement. In this study, firstly, an underground field trials of N 2 injection replacement in a coal mine with low-permeability coal seams in China were conducted, and a comparative analysis of "N 2 injection to enhance gas drainage" and "conventional drainage" technique was performed. The result show that injecting pressurized N 2 into a low-permeability coal seam could increase the pressure gradient to promote the directional flow of free gas from the coal seam cracks to the gas-production boreholes. After N 2 injection, the mixed flow rate and CH4 flow rate significantly increased. Additionally, the gas content in the coal seam in the experimental area significantly decreased. Secondly, the lag-effect was discussed. Upon discontinuation of N 2 injection, the gas-producing mixed flow initially increased slightly, then gradually decreased, and eventually settled at a high level. Despite the attenuation of N 2 injection volume, the CH 4 flow rate continued to increase during intermittent injection and remained high after gas injection discontinuation. Finally, three deep learning algorithms (BP, LSTM, and TCN) were employed to predict the dynamic change of gas drainage in coal seams displaced by N 2 injection, based on the results of the field test. The results indicated that deep learning algorithms exhibited superior prediction performance. The TCN model demonstrated the lowest approximation error rate, displaying optimal performance in predicting the CH 4 flow rate during nitrogen injection for enhanced gas drainage. Additionally, it exhibited good applicability to other similar field test results.

Abstract:Coal spontaneous combustion in the gob poses a significant threat to coal mining operations. Designing optimal process parameters for nitrogen injection to prevent and control fires efficiently is crucial. To achieve this, a multi-field coupling equation was established, considering the adsorption of coal to gas. The model's accuracy was verified on-site, and the effects of nitrogen injection at different locations and flow rates were simulated. The optimal injection parameters were determined by analyzing temperature and inerting time. The results showed that the coal spontaneous combustion hazardous zone in the gob tested on-site was consistent with the simulation from the perspective of physisorption. Nitrogen injection had three stages: gas expansion, rapid oxygen dilution, and complete inerting. The nitrogen injection effect presented a nonlinear change in injection location and flow rate. The optimal nitrogen injection location for the Tingnan Coal Mine in Shaanxi was determined to be 90 m behind the working face on the inlet side, with an optimal flow rate of 800 m 3 /min. This study focused on gas adsorption and offered valuable insights for creating high-efficiency fire-fighting techniques that involve inserting in the gob.

Abstract:To effectively prevent and control the spontaneous combustion of residual coal at the bottom of a large fully mechanized gob space, we proposed a targeted inertization technology based on the injection of power plant flue gas. Based on the real onsite conditions of the gob, the three‐dimensional distributions of the overburden fractures, gas emission, and residual coal were added to the multiphysics coupled model of spontaneous coal combustion. The simulation method based on moving coordinates was used to complete the risk evaluation and the locating of the spontaneous combustion in the fully mechanized gob, and the key control factors of the inerted zone and the fire prevention effect of the flue gas injection were analyzed. The results showed that the mismatch between the inerted zone and the spontaneous combustion risk zone was the root cause of the poor fire prevention effect of the inert gas injection. Because the density of the flue gas was greater than that of the leaked air, the flue gas mainly migrated and diffused in the lower part of the gob. At a distance of 100 m from the working face, the flue gas with 3%‐9% oxygen content injected at a rate of 2000 m3/h completely covered the high‐temperature residual coal. This caused the maximum temperature (Tmax) to drop from 334.2 K upon nitrogen injection to below 310 K. Additionally, the effect of the oxygen content fluctuation on Tmax was controlled within 2.6 K. The methods and the results in this study can serve as a reference for efficiently preventing and controlling local spontaneous combustion hazards in large spaces for underground coal mining.

Abstract:Mining coal seams with high coal gas content and coal spontaneous combustion (SponCom) risk is often a challenge for mining engineers. Control measures for maintaining the gas concentration under the regulation permissible limit (Generally 1%) as well as reducing coal fire risks must be taken simultaneously in order to create safety production conditions. However, in reality, such measures either for gas or for fire problems are sometimes conflictive. For an example, the basic strategy of gas control in underground is to increase the ventilation airflow for sweeping the longwall working face and diluting the gas concentration, but it also results in leakage of an amount of air into the mine gob area sufficient to support the coal SponCom development process. Conversely, sealing or isolating mine gob areas can easily cause the gas accumulation which may increase the gas explosion risk. To conquer this dilemma situation, it is necessary to deeply understand the coupling relationship between the mine gases and coal SponCom controls. In this paper, based on a real case in an underground coal mine, a ventilation parameters optimization research is conducted by using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation approach for solving the stated contradiction problems to derive the optimum solutions for both managing gas hazards and fire risks in the underground. In this study, the boundary conditions are fully considered in accordance with the reality. A list of important ventilation parameters including the air quantity supplied to the mine working face, the negative ventilation pressure in the roof roadway for gas drainage and reasonable distributed airflow quantity in tailgate roadways, are investigated. The research findings balance the requirements both for gas control and fire-prevention. The proposed method could be applied to guide the mine design practices in improving safety.

Abstract:N2 injection into coal seams can effectively enhance the gas flow capacity in the late stage of pumping, thereby improving the recovery rate and recovery efficiency of low coalbed methane (CBM). To reveal the thermodynamic flow coupling relationship between the reservoir and the gas phase and its transportation mechanism in the process of thermal N2 injection, a mathematical coupling model of N2 injection that considers the deformation of the coal seam, fluid transportation, and temperature change was established. The influence of the seepage heat transfer effect of the coal seam under the effect of N2 injection on the CH4 extraction rate was investigated using this model. Results indicate that the action mechanism of N2 injection in coal seams includes increasing seepage, promoting flow, and displacing gases. A higher initial coal seam temperature results in a smaller thermal expansion and deformation of the coal skeleton during thermal N2 injection and less pronounced coal permeability increase. A larger initial coal seam permeability results in more favorable N2 diffusion, which strengthens the flow-promoting effect on CH4. The effect of gas injection pressure on CH4 recovery is greater than that of the gas injection temperature: High pressure promotes N2 seepage, carries CH4 flow, and increases the CH4 diffusion effect, whereas higher temperature promotes the desorption of adsorbed gas in the coal seam and improves the recovery rate.
Numerical investigation of flue gas injection enhanced underground coal seam gas drainage

Abstract:Coal seam with low permeability is widely distributed in China. Injection of flue gas (N2:CO2 = 0.85:0.15) is an effective approach to improve coal seam gas drainage efficiency. This process relates complex responses among ternary gases (CH4, CO2, and N2) competitive sorption on coals, gas diffusion, gas‐water migration by means of two‐phase flow, and coal deformation. In this paper, an improved hydraulic‐mechanical model coupling above interactions is established for flue gas injection enhanced gas drainage. This model is used to simulate flue gas enhanced drainage by finite element method. The sensitivity analyses of key factors are made to recovery a better understanding on the processes controlling flue gas enhanced drainage. Results show that the flue gas enhanced drainage can indeed improve the efficiency of gas extraction and reduce the gas pressure to the required value in a shorter duration. Due to the competitive adsorption and gas sweeping effect of injected flue gas, CH4 is driven toward drainage borehole, and CH4 pressure and content near the injection borehole decrease faster than that near the drainage borehole. The peak CH4 pressure laterally moves from the injection borehole to the drainage borehole. Higher injection pressure, initial permeability, and smaller sorption affinity ratios may lead to greater CH4 production rate at early drainage stage, but smaller CH4 production rate at late stage. The factors controlling the behavior of flue gas enhanced drainage are initial permeability, injection pressure, and sorption affinity ratios in order. This work offers useful framework to investigate important technical challenges associated with enhanced mine gas drainage, as well as unconventional gas development.

Abstract:Abstract Enhanced coalbed methane (ECBM) recovery by gas injection is regarded as a feasible method for ECBM recovery. To investigate the mechanism of CH 4 displacement by N 2 injection, a series of physical experiments were conducted in the laboratory under different N 2 injection pressures. The experimental results showed a continuous increase in the N 2 volume fraction and a decrease in the CH 4 volume fraction with the N 2 injection pressure. The CH 4 displacement efficiency increases rapidly in the initial stage and then gradually stabilizes. Given the effect of matrix shrinkage and effective stress on coal permeability, a dynamic multi‐field coupling model of ECBM recovery by N 2 injection (N 2 ‐ECBM) was proposed in this work. Then, numerical simulations were implemented by the coupling model to analyze the key factors affecting coal permeability, N 2 injection pressure and CH 4 pressure during the N 2 –ECBM process. Furthermore, the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the interactions of multiple factors, the results reveal that an increase in one factor would weaken the influence of another factor. In addition, a RSM regression model was obtained and verified by the experimental data, with a well‐fitting outcomes. Therefore, the RSM model can be used in practical engineering applications to optimize specific extraction parameters for ECBM recovery at minimum cost in a limited extraction period.

Abstract:From the perspective of plugging air leakage paths and preventing coal spontaneous combustion in the goaf of coal mines, filling and plugging the ends of the working face is crucial. Generally speaking, rapidly solidified foam slurry is beneficial to plugging air leakage paths. However, researchers have not yet clarified the accumulation and diffusion rules of rapidly solidified foam, resulting in low efficiency in plugging air leakage paths. To solve the above problems, this study takes the goaf of 1301 working faces of the Shandong Lilou Coal Industry as the research object, uses the computational fluid dynamics modeling method to construct a physical model of pressure injection foam slurry, and optimizes the on-site application process parameters of plugging the end of the working face. The numerical simulation results show that coagulant can improve the accumulation characteristics and plugging efficiency of foam slurry, and the optimal addition amount is 3 wt%. In addition, as the perfusion flow increases from 5 to 15 m 3 /h, the airflow rates on the working face gradually increases and the oxidation zone gradually shrinks. Therefore, the grouting flow is preferably 15 m 3 /h. Field test results show that rapid-setting inorganic solidified foam blocks the airflow at the air inlet corner from leaking into the goaf and weakens the composite reaction of coal and oxygen. The temperature at each monitoring point first decreased, then stabilized, and the final temperature was maintained at 27-28°C. The CO concentration gradually decreased and finally remained below 20 ppm. The CO concentration of the mine's total return airflow is stable below 10 ppm. This study can provide theoretical guidance for the technological design of using solidified foam to rapidly plug the air leakage paths at the end of the fully mechanized caving working face.

Abstract:The formation of pores due to the spontaneous combustion of coal in the goaf, as well as the damage to the surrounding rock caused by high-temperature roasting, can lead to surface subsidence and even collapse. In addition, incomplete combustion of coal can result in the production of various harmful gases, which may escape into the atmosphere through these cracks and seriously pollute the air. This pollution can exacerbate topsoil subsidence, degrade soil properties, harm surface vegetation, and contaminate surface water and groundwater. As a solution to these issues, liquid carbon dioxide fire prevention and extinguishing technology are being utilized for theoretical analysis of overburden movement in goaf. A three-dimensional distribution model of porosity in caving areas has been constructed. Based on this model, dynamic changes in temperature field and oxygen concentration field during liquid carbon dioxide perfusion are being explored. The rapid vaporization of liquid carbon dioxide into inert gas within the goaf inhibits coal oxidation and heating by forming an inert belt within its diffusion range. Simulation results indicate that injecting liquid carbon dioxide at a 90° angle into the oxidation zone (where oxygen concentration is 7–12%) at a volume of 750 m3h-1 best balances cost considerations with effective injection in mining goafs. Industrial testing has shown that after 65 h of perfusion, CO gas concentration decreased from 790ppm to 41ppm – proving significant fire prevention effects from liquid carbon dioxide application.

Abstract:Seepage behaviors of air leakage directly affect the coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) in longwall gobs, which is usually regarded as Darcy flow, but in fact, non-linear seepage should better characterize the properties of air flow in the gobs. To address this issue, steady-state percolation tests were conducted on broken rocks with five particle sizes, and the non-Darcy permeability parameters versus porosity and particle size were obtained by binary fitting the experimental data, and then applied to an actual longwall gob. The multi-physics coupling model of CSC in longwall gobs was modified accordingly, which was then validated by comparing with on-site observation data. Numerical solving procedures based on Darcy seepage and non-Darcy seepage were developed separately to quantify the effects of these two types of seepage on the CSC. The results show that (i) the seepage tests confirm that the seepage behavior in the broken rocks is more consistent with the non-Darcy seepage; (ii) the distributions of oxygen concentration and solid temperature under the two seepage flows are relatively similar, but the high-temperature zone in the gob under non-Darcy seepage is larger and hotter; (iii) the non-Darcy permeability coefficient has a positive effect on the coal temperature rise in the gob, while the non-Darcy flow factor has almost no effect, so taking plugging measures at the working face can effectively prevent the spontaneous combustion in gobs. This work contributes to the understanding of the air seepage behavior in longwall gobs and its impact on the CSC.

Abstract:The 11101 working face of Qipanjing Mine was taken as the research object to explore the dynamic change law of the spontaneous combustion of the remaining coal in the gob-side entry retaining goaf area. A sealed oxygen consumption experiment was conducted to determine the (critical) oxygen volume fraction in the suffocation zone and continuous oxygen consumption rate of coal samples. The parameters of the working face were measured on site, and the air volume fraction in the goaf was monitored using a beam tube. Considering upward ventilation and the effect of gravity, a UDF control program for the falling medium in the gob-side entry retaining goaf was written. Based on the experimental results, a control program for the continuous oxygen consumption rate of the remnant coal was compiled, the dynamic distribution of the flow field in the gob-side entry retaining goaf was simulated with different advancing positions and air leakage at the working face, and a prediction model for the spontaneous combustion danger area was established. Finally, fire prevention measures via grouting in the return air lane side and nitrogen injection in the retaining lane side were put forward. The results showed that with the variation in the advancing position of the working face or in the air leakage of the air intake lane, the range of the natural hazardous area of the gob-side entry retaining goaf presents a distribution with a power function S F = x n +b (0 < n < 1). The theoretically proposed fire-fighting measures can effectively reduce the risk of spontaneous combustion of coal.

Abstract:Spontaneous combustion of residual coal in longwall goaf is a long standing hazard. Airflow leakage into goaf is a major driver to the hazard and this issue deteriorates where longwalls are operating in multiple seams and shallow covers because mining-induced cracks are very likely to draw fresh airflow into goaf due to presence of pressure differential between longwall face and surface. To study the problem more critically, a ventilation simulation package “Ventsim” is used to conduct a case study from Bulianta colliery. It was found that isolating and pressurizing active longwall panel can mitigate the problem and the pressure differential can be adjusted by varying performance of auxiliary fan and resistance of ventilation regulator. A booster ventilation system can also mitigate the problem by adjusting fan duties. Ventilation simulation is a powerful tool to study spontaneous combustion control in underground coal mine.

Research on complex air leakage method to prevent coal spontaneous combustion in longwall goaf

Abstract:Spontaneous combustion of coal is one of the major hazards threatening production safety during longwall mining. Mining-induced voids, which provide passages for air leakage, are the key factor triggering spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall goafs. In this study, a comprehensive method, which combined pressure balance, grouting injection, and filling fissures, was proposed to prevent spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall goafs with complex air leakage. Field engineering practice was carried out in Sitai Coal Mine in China. The results demonstrated that with the application of the proposed method, in the working face, the concentration of CO was decreased from 31ppm to 0 and the air leakage quantity was decreased from 261 to below 80 m3min-1. The gas samples analysis from the gob areas also indicated that concentrations of O2 and CO were successively decreased, indicating that the risk of spontaneous combustion of coal in goafs was eliminated. The above mentioned analysis indicates that, the method proposed in this study is useful and efficient. Successful application of this technology could provide reference for the treatment of other coal mines.

Abstract:To control the gas accumulation and spontaneous combustion in goafs of coal mines, many measures such as airflow volume at the working face, gas extraction, and nitrogen injection in goafs have been taken. However, the principles of these measures contradict when controlling two hazards simultaneously. It is necessary to understand how the flow field in goafs is influenced by these measures. In this study, a mathematical model of the flow field in a goaf behind a u-type mechanized working face is established using the theory of porous media. The flow field in a goaf with the risk of gas accidents and spontaneous combustion was analyzed for different controlling measures. Taking the Daxing coal mine in Liaoning Province as an example, the main parameters, such as airflow volume, gas extraction, and nitrogen injection, were optimized based on the simulation results. These results are of great significance for the coupled control of gas accumulation and spontaneous combustion in goafs of coal mines.

Abstract:Abstract In order to achieve the best effects of water injection in coal seam, ANSYS software, which combines stress–strain relationship with computational fluid dynamics, was used to simulate the pressure and velocity field of coal seam under water injection pressures of 20 and 3 MPa for determining the optimal injection parameters. Simulation results showed that the high pressure could significantly enhance the wetting effect of coal, and that the water dilutive wet coal range under 20 MPa was about 1.93 times larger than that under 3 MPa. On this basis, the high and low pressure combined coal seam water injection technique was designed and applied to the #1305 fully mechanized top coal caving face in the Dongtan coal mine, and dust concentration and rock burst energy in the working face before and after water injection were statistically tested. It was found that the average reduction rates of total dust and respirable dust were 52.96 and 53.84% respectively, and that the released energy of a single rock burst was controlled within 105 J after adopting the combined technique. It is believed that the combined water injection technique has an obvious effect on dust control and rock burst prevention.
