Abstract:The cubic garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (c-LLZO) is one of the most promising solid electrolytes due to its high ionic conductivity and large electrochemical window. However, the critical issue of Li2CO3 formation on the c-LLZO surface when exposed to air is problematic, which is detrimental to the ionic conductivity and storage. Herein, comparative studies were carried out on the air stability of Al-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (Al-LLZO), Al-Ta-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (Al-LLZTO), and Al-Nb-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (Al-LLZNO). It was found that Al-LLZTO and Al-LLZNO are less reactive with air than Al-LLZO. The morphology of Li2CO3 on Al-LLZTO micro-sized powders after air exposure was island-like with ~1.5 μm in thickness. The interfacial resistance of Li/Al-LLZTO was also a factor of ~3 smaller than that of Li/Al-LLZO, leading to the improved cycle stability of Li/Al-LLZTO/Li symmetric cells. The first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) verified that the decomposition energy of Al-LLZTO was larger than that of Al-LLZO, inhibiting the reaction product of Li2O and, thus, the next step product of Li2CO3 following the reactions of Li2O + H2O → LiOH and LiOH + CO2 → Li2CO3.

Abstract:Recently Li-ion-conducting solid electrolytes have received intensive research interest, as they provide solutions for issues associated with the organic liquid electrolytes in conventional Li-ion batteries. However, despite the relatively high bulk conductivity achieved in many solid electrolytes, the grain-boundary conductivity is frequently low and limits the application. Detailed atomic structure and elemental distribution on the grain boundaries in these materials must be revealed in order to fundamentally understand the origin of large grain-boundary resistance. Such studies, however, are currently very rare. Here we present a detailed atomic scale study on the conduction behaviors of an extensively studied solid electrolyte (Li3x La2/3-x )TiO3 (LLTO). Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and the associated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) analysis, we found that the large grain-boundary resistance of LLTO arose from the intrinsic local structural reconstruction, which is energetically not favorable for Li accommodation. Therefore, large flux of charge carriers was unlikely to occur both along and across the grain boundary, leading to the poor grain-boundary conductivity. The relationship among the processing condition, microstructure, and ionic conductivity was established. And the ionic transport behavior in LLTO is further compared to that in garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12. These results paved the way for further improvement of the Li-ion-conducting solid electrolytes.
Enhanced Performance of Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 Solid Electrolyte by the Regulation of Grain and Grain Boundary Phases

Abstract:The application of Li-ion conducting garnet electrolytes is challenged by their large interfacial resistance with the metallic lithium anode and the relative small critical current density at which the lithium dendrites short-circuit the battery. Both of these challenges are closely related to the morphology and the structure of the garnet membranes. Here, we prepared four polycrystalline garnet Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) pellets with different particle sizes (nano/micro) and grain boundary additive (with/without Al2O3) to investigate the influence of grain size, the composition of the grain boundary, and the mechanical strength of the pellet on the total Li-ion conduction of the pellet, Li/garnet interfacial transfer, and lithium dendrite growth in all-solid-state Li-metal cells. The results showed that the garnet pellets prepared with nanoparticles and LiAlO2-related grain boundary phase had decreased total Li-ion conductivity because of the increased resistance of the grain boundary; however, these pellets showed higher mechanical strength and improved capability to suppress lithium dendrite growth at high current densities. By controlling the grain size and optimizing the grain boundary with Al2O3 sintering additive, the hot-pressing sintered LLZTO solid electrolytes can reach up to 1.01 × 10–3 S cm–1 in Li+ conductivity and 0.29 eV in activation energy. LLZTO with nanosized grain and LiAlO2-modified grain boundary showed the highest critical current density, which is 0.6 mA cm–2 at room temperature and 1.7 mA cm–2 at 60 °C. Abstract:Abstract Owing to high lithium ion conductivity and good stability with lithium metal, Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO—a solid electrolyte) has emerged as a viable candidate for solid-state battery applications. In the current study, Al-substituted LLZO (Al-LLZO) powder is synthesized using a typical solid-state reaction. The pellets are made with the synthesized powder and are subjected to annealing for different durations and its effect on the structural properties of the Al-LLZO is investigated in detail. Reitveld refinement of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern reveals that the sintered Al-LLZO belong to the cubic system with the Ia-3d space group at room temperature. Morphology and microstructural properties of sintered powder are analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM)/selected area electron diffraction (SAED), respectively. The FESEM image of LLZO pellets shows well-structured cubic grains spread evenly over on the surface after sintering. The chemical compositions of the sample are identified using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX). The surface chemistry of the prepared samples is examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which states that the observed photoelectron signals from O 1s at about 531 eV and Li1s at 54.52 eV correspond to the Li-O bond in Al-LLZO. Raman spectra have been analyzed and the observed Raman peaks appearing at 299 cm−1, 393 cm−1, 492 cm−1, and 514 cm−1 were assigned to Eg, F2g, A1g, and F2g, respectively. Phase transformation from C-LLZO to the pyrochore LZO phase is noticed when the sample is sintered for 12 h at 1100 °C. The impedance analysis is carried out to measure the conductivity of the Al-LLZO pellet and is found to be 0.3 × 10−5 S cm−1, which is suitable for solid electrolyte applications in lithium ion batteries.

High diversity of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases among clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae from Portugal.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES To investigate the occurrence and the diversity of Ambler class A ESBLs among Enterobacteriaceae from different Portuguese clinical settings over a 2 year period (2002-04). METHODS One hundred and nine extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolates from five geographically distant health institutions in Portugal were studied. ESBLs were characterized by isoelectric focussing, PCR and further sequencing. Antibiotic susceptibility testing, transfer of resistance genes and clonal diversity were determined by standard procedures. Plasmid relatedness was established by comparison of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) patterns. RESULTS ESBLs were identified as TEM (46%), SHV (30%), CTX-M (22%) and GES (2%) types; TEM-24, TEM-52, SHV-12 and CTX-M-15 enzymes being the most frequently found. Inter-hospital dissemination of epidemic strains harbouring the most prevalent ESBLs was detected, including the TEM-24-producing Enterobacter aerogenes European epidemic clone. Conjugative transfer of ESBLs was achieved for 67% of isolates and epidemic plasmids containing specific bla genes were detected (bla(CTX-M-15) and bla(TEM-24)). We describe two new ESBLs, SHV-90 (A187T, G238S and E240K) and SHV-91 (P20S and E240K), and a new TEM-type enzyme conferring a phenotype resembling that of a complex mutant TEM beta-lactamase, designated as TEM-154 (M69L and R164S). The broad-spectrum beta-lactamases SHV-26, SHV-36 and TEM-110 were first observed in our country. CONCLUSIONS We describe a complex ESBL epidemiology in Portugal, including widespread dissemination of known strains and plasmids coding for TEM-24 and CTX-M-15 enzymes as observed in other European countries.

Abstract:Al-doped Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) solid electrolyte is a promising candidate for all-solid-state lithium battery (ASSB) due to its high ionic conductivity and stability against lithium metal. Dense LLZO pellets were prepared by high-temperature sintering and a Li 3 BO 3 melting agent was used to control the microstructure (grain size and grain boundary chemistry). An ionic conductivity of 0.49 mS·cm −1 was measured at room temperature. The LLZO/Li interface was modified by introducing an aluminum layer. The impact of the microstructure of LLZO ceramics and the chemistry of the LLZO/Li interface were discussed by measuring the critical current density (CCD). Even though secondary phases at the grain boundary lead to an increase of the electronic conductivity, no significant influence of the microstructure on the CCD value (50 μ A·cm −2 ) has been established. The low CCD value has been improved by forming an Al-Li alloy interlayer at the LLZO/Li interface, due to a better homogenization of the Li current at the interface. In parallel, the applied pressure (0.09 MPa vs. 0.4 MPa) has been studied and did impact the CCD. A value of 0.35 μ A·cm −2 was measured. These results highlight the conditions needed for keeping a good electrolyte/Li interface during the cycling of a solid state battery.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) have been widely considered as an "enabler" for the next-generation high-energy density batteries and simultaneously solve the safety issues of liquid lithiumion batteries. Garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is one of the most promising solid electrolyte (SE) materials for SSLMBs. In the past decade, great advances for LLZO have been achieved in terms of material preparation, cation dopants and substitutions, ion conductivity, ion transport mechanisms, and interface engineering, but relatively little attention was focused on its air stability. This issue is of equal importance as it plays a key role in LLZO storage, processing, and practical applications in SSLMBs. A thorough understanding of the origin of its instability and the properties of the air passivation layer (APL) may provide guidance for developing strategies to simplify cell assembly and improve the quality of the SE/Li interface. This study aimed to investigate the air stability-related characteristics of Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO), including the properties of the APL, and the origin of instability and air passivation mechanism. Fifteen-level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling and thermogravimetric analysis reveal that LiOHmiddotxH2O, Li2CO3, and Li6.4-xHxLa3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 are the main contaminants in the APL, and the contents increased with exposure time. LiOHmiddotxH2O originating from the Li+/H+ exchange reaction is an important intermediate for APL formation. A feasible heat treatment at 700 degrees C for 3 h has been demonstrated to be an effective and simple method to completely remove the surficial APL. Our findings broaden the understanding of the air stability of LLZTO and head for practical applications of garnet-based SSLMBs. In addition, this systematic methodology may inspire fresh investigations of air stability-related issues for broader solid electrolytes.
Synergistically Engineering Grains and Grain Boundaries toward Li Dendrite-Free Li7La3Zr2O12

Abstract:Cation-doped cubic Li7La3Zr2O12 is regarded as a promising solid electrolyte for safe and energy-dense solid-state lithium batteries. However, it suffers from the formation of Li2CO3 and high electronic conductivity, which give rise to an unconformable Li/Li7La3Zr2O12 interface and lithium dendrites. Herein, composite AlF3-Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 solid electrolytes were created based on thermal AlF3 decomposition and F/O displacement reactions under a high-temperature sintering process. When the AlF3 is thermally decomposed, it leaves Al2O3/AlF3 meliorating the grain boundaries and F- ions partially displacing O2- ions in the grains. Due to the higher electronegativity of F- in the grains and the grain-boundary modification, these AlF3-Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 deliver optimized electronic conduction and chemical stability against the formation of Li2CO3. The Li/AlF3-Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12/Li cell exhibits a low interfacial resistance of ∼16 Ω cm2 and an ultrastable long-term cycling behavior for 800 h under a current density of 200 μA/cm2, leading to Li//LiCoO2 solid-state batteries with good rate performance and cycling stability.

Abstract:Utilizing lithium metal anodes with solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) to construct all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) is a promising approach, which offers high energy density and safety. The SSEs play an integral role in ASSLBs, and the oxide garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) is widely used as electrolyte material due to its high Li+ + conductivity and wide electrochemical window. However, many issues in LLZO still need to be addressed, like the formation of Li2CO3 2 CO 3 in air, interface contact with electrodes, and the growth of Li dendrites. We approach this review from the perspective that "structure determines performance", elucidating the relationship between multi-scale microstructures (doping defects, grain boundary, surface and interface) and four key performances in batteries (Li+ + conductivity, air stability, Li dendrites and cathode compatibility), analyzing the mechanisms of performances degradation induced by microstructures and summarizing various microstructures modification strategies that enhance performances, with the aim of constructing high-performance LLZO-based ASSLBs. Finally, we outline future research directions for LLZO, including the development of high-entropy LLZO SSEs, in-depth studies of grain boundary, advanced characterization and extra performance testing for LLZO evaluation, and feasible strategies in applications of LLZO-based ASSLBs.
All Solid-State Li/LLZO/LCO Battery Enabled by Alumina Interfacial Coating

Abstract:Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) garnet-type lithium-ion conductors are being investigated as a promising solid electrolyte for solid-state lithium batteries. To enable a functional all-solid-state configuration intensive investigations are needed to reduce the cathode/electrolyte interfacial resistance which contributes the most to cell performance loss. Among the commercial cathode materials investigated so far, LiCoO 2 (LCO) is one of the most stable with garnet electrolytes as only a superficial reaction has been detected between the two materials. However, even this minor reaction would block the Li-ion transport through the interface, resulting in deteriorated cell performance. In this work, we demonstrate that a thin aluminum oxide layer (5 nm) can be an effective interlayer to impede the formation of a harmful interphase and enable facile Li-ion transfer between LCO and the LLZO garnet. Room-temperature-sputtered LCO thin films were employed to form an interface with the garnet electrolyte and annealed at 800 °C to reveal the effect of the interfacial reaction on the Li-ion transfer across the interface. An aluminum oxide layer was then introduced between LCO and the garnet electrolyte by sputtering a metallic aluminum layer which is then annealed together with the upper LCO layer in oxygen, or by direct atomic layer deposition of the oxide. Compared to the LCO/LLZO/Li cells without an aluminum oxide interlayer, those with the interlayer exhibited improved performance, i.e., a stable discharge capacity of up to 90 mAh/(g LCO) at a C/10 rate, a rate capability up to 1.68C and a stable galvanostatic cycling at 0.1C for over 100 cycles with a discharge capacity fade rate of 0.15% per cycle. It was determined that aluminum diffused into the LCO layer after preventing the initial detrimental reaction between LCO and the LLZO garnet from happening during high temperature annealing, suggesting that the coating does not have to remain a physically blocking layer during cycling to function.

Abstract:Garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is regarded as one of the most promising solid-state electrolytes due to its good thermal stability, high mechanical strength, wide electrochemical window, and good stability against Li metal. However, Li and LLZO have poor physical contact, leading to a large interfacial resistance and poor electrochemical performance. It is recognized that LLZO is intrinsic lithiophilic. But LLZO easily reacts with H2O and CO2 in air and generates Li2CO3 and other inevitable surface contaminants. The contaminated surface results in poor interfacial wettability against Li metal. Herein, an air-stable surface layer is introduced to Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) by simply reacting LLZTO with a LiPF6-based liquid electrolyte. During the reacting process, Li2CO3 is removed and a lithiophilic and ion-conductive modified layer is formed. The layer helps to build a uniform and intimate contact between Li and LLZTO. The interfacial resistance is reduced to 15.675 Ω cm2, less than one fifth of that between bare LLZTO and Li. Benefiting from the favorable interface, stable Li plating and stripping can be conducted for over 1000 h at a current density of 0.22 mA cm–2. Even after being exposed to air for 3 days, the interfacial resistance of surface-modified LLZTO against Li remains as low as 36.29 Ω cm2 and performs stable Li plating and stripping for 1000 h. Moreover, the quasi-solid-state Li metal batteries of Li/LLZTO/LiCoO2, Li/LLZTO/LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, and Li/LLZTO/LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 exhibit excellent cycling performances, which confirms the feasibility of the strategy in the practical manufacture.

Abstract:Abstract Contemporary Li‐ion batteries are facing substantial challenges like safety and limited energy density. The development of all‐solid‐state battery cells mitigates safety hazards and allows the use of Li‐metal anodes increasing energy density. Garnet‐type solid electrolytes can be vital to achieving an all‐solid‐state cell and an understanding of the influence of its microstructure on the electrochemical performance is crucial for material and cell design. In this work the influence of grain size on the Li‐ion conductivity of Li 7‐3x La 3 Zr 2 Al x O 12 ( x =0.22) is presented. The synthesis and processing procedure allows changing the ceramic grain size, while maintaining the same synthesis parameters, eliminating influences of the synthesis on grain boundary composition. Field assisted sintering technology is a powerful method to obtain dense, fine‐grained ceramics with an optimal grain size of 2–3 μm, where the conductivity is double that of the counterpart (0.7 μm). A total Li‐ion conductivity of 0.43 mS cm −1 and an activation energy of 0.36 eV were achieved. The oxide‐based all‐solid‐state battery cell combining the garnet‐type electrolyte, a Li‐metal anode and a thin‐film LiCoO 2 cathode was assembled and cycled at room temperature for 90 hours. This represents a proof of concept, for the application of oxide‐based electrolytes at ambient temperatures.

Surface-Dependent Stability of the Interface between Garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 and the Li Metal in the All-Solid-State Battery from First-Principles Calculations

Abstract:The garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolyte is of particular interest because of its good chemical stability under atmospheric condition, suitable for practical all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). However, recent works observed electrochemical instability at the LLZO/Li interfaces. Herein, we have revealed the origin of the instability by performing a comprehensive first-principles investigation with a high-throughput interface structure search scheme, based on the density functional theory framework. Based on the constructed phase diagrams of low-index surfaces, we found that the coordinatively unsaturated (i.e. coordination number < 6) Zr sites exist widely on the low-energy LLZO surfaces. These undercoordinated Zr sites are reduced once the LLZO surface is in contact with the Li metal, leading to chemical instability of the LLZO/Li interface. Besides, the calculated formation and adhesion energies of interfaces suggest that the Li wettability on the LLZO surface is dependent on the termination structure. The employment of the approaches such as by controlling the synthesis atmosphere are needed for preventing the reduction of LLZO against the Li metal. The present analysis with comprehensive first-principles calculations provides a novel perspective for the rational optimization of the interface between LLZO electrolyte and Li metal anode in the ASSB.

Abstract:Stabilized Li6.25La3Al0.25 Zr2O12 (cubic LLZO or c-LLZO) is a Li+-conducting ceramic with ionic conductivities approaching 1 mS-cm. Processing c LLZO so that it is suitable for use as a solid state electrolyte in all solid state batteries, however, is challenging due to the formation of secondary phases at elevated temperatures. The work described in this manuscript examines the formation of one such secondary phase La2Zr2O7 (LZO) formed during sintering c LLZO at 1000 °C. Specifically, spatially resolved Raman spectroscopy and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) measurements have identified gradients in Li distributions in the Li ion (Li+)-conducting ceramic Li6.25La3Al0.25 Zr2O12 (cubic LLZO or c-LLZO) created by thermal processing. Sintering c-LLZO under conditions relevant to solid state Li+ electrolyte fabrication conditions lead to Li+ loss and the formation of new phases. Specifically, sintering for 1 h at 1000 °C leads to Li+ depletion and the formation of the pyrochlore lanthanum zirconate (La2Zr2O7 or LZO), a material known to be both electronically and ionically insulating. Circular c-LLZO samples are covered on the top and bottom surfaces, exposing only the 1.6 mm-thick sample perimeter to the furnace's ambient air. Sintered samples show a radially symmetric LZO gradient, with more LZO at the center of the pellet and considerably less LZO at the edges. This profile implies that Li+ diffusion through the material is faster than Li+ loss through volatilization, and that Li+ migration from the center of the sample to the edges is not completely reversible. These conditions lead to a net depletion of Li+ at the sample center. Findings presented in this work suggest new strategies for LLZO processing that will minimize Li+ loss during sintering, leading to a more homogeneous material with more reproducible electrochemical behavior.

Abstract:A co‐doping strategy involving the introduction of Mg and Ta at the La and Zr sites, respectively, can effectively improve the air stability of Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) electrolytes. This approach mitigates the performance degradation caused by environmental exposure, thus laying a foundation for the application of LLZO in all‐solid‐state lithium batteries. Garnet‐type Li7La3Zr2O12 electrolytes have garnered significant attention as promising solid‐state electrolyte candidates in all‐solid‐state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). However, its susceptibility to forming Li2CO3 upon atmospheric exposure leads to performance degradation, limiting its application. This study introduces a co‐doping strategy of Mg and Ta to enhance the properties of garnet electrolytes. Pure cubic Mg and Ta‐doped LLZO electrolytes are successfully synthesized using the solid‐state reaction method. Experimental results, coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculation, reveal that Mg2+ doping occurs primarily at the La site (24c). This substitution, given the substantial disparity in ionic radii between Mg2+ and La3+, effectively narrows the transport bottleneck for Li‐ions, resulting in a decreased ionic conductivity and an increased activation energy. Li6.6La2.8Mg0.2Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 exhibits a relative density of ≈92.6%, demonstrating outstanding performance with a room temperature ionic conductivity of 4.31 × 10−4 S cm−1 and low electronic conductivity of 2.48 × 10−8 S cm−1. Notably, after 4 months of atmospheric exposure, its ionic conductivity decreased to ≈78% of the initial value, attributable to Li2CO3 formation. Furthermore, the material demonstrated exceptional long‐term cycle stability over 1000 h at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2 at 25 °C, indicating effective suppression of Li dendrite formation.

Abstract:The application of Li-ion conducting garnet electrolytes is challenged by their large interfacial resistance with the metallic lithium anode and the relative small critical current density at which the lithium dendrites short-circuit the battery. Both of these challenges are closely related to the morphology and the structure of the garnet membranes. Here, we prepared four polycrystalline garnet Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) pellets with different particle sizes (nano/micro) and grain boundary additive (with/without Al2O3) to investigate the influence of grain size, the composition of the grain boundary, and the mechanical strength of the pellet on the total Li-ion conduction of the pellet, Li/garnet interfacial transfer, and lithium dendrite growth in all-solid-state Li-metal cells. The results showed that the garnet pellets prepared with nanoparticles and LiAlO2-related grain boundary phase had decreased total Li-ion conductivity because of the increased resistance of the grain boundary; however, these pellets showed higher mechanical strength and improved capability to suppress lithium dendrite growth at high current densities. By controlling the grain size and optimizing the grain boundary with Al2O3 sintering additive, the hot-pressing sintered LLZTO solid electrolytes can reach up to 1.01 × 10-3 S cm-1 in Li+ conductivity and 0.29 eV in activation energy. LLZTO with nanosized grain and LiAlO2-modified grain boundary showed the highest critical current density, which is 0.6 mA cm-2 at room temperature and 1.7 mA cm-2 at 60 °C. This study offers a useful guideline for preparing a high-performance LLZTO solid electrolyte.

Abstract:Over the last decade, Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) has shown to be one of the most promising materials as a solid electrolyte in Li-ion batteries. However, several factors can affect the final electrochemical properties of the material, such as the synthesis method and the inclusion of dopants. In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of undoped and Al-doped LLZO prepared through solid state and sol-gel methods. An in-situ thermal investigation on the synthesis of LLZO shows how solid state synthesis forms LLZO at lower rates, however the resulting LLZO is more stable at higher temperatures. The addition of Al as a dopant further increases the thermal stability of the material by lowering its decomposition rate. Ionic conductivity measurements reveal how sol-gel LLZO samples experience several times higher conductivity than their solid state counterparts due to tightly interconnected grains. With the addition of Al, the conductivity further increases by two orders of magnitude. With that we are able to achieve the highest ionic conductivity of 4.96 × 10−4 S/cm for Al-doped sol-gel LLZO and an activation energy of 0.28(1) eV. This work provides a better understanding of how different synthesis methods affect the final properties of LLZO solid electrolytes.

Abstract:Poor ion and high electron transport at the grain boundaries (GBs) of ceramic electrolytes are the primary reasons for lithium filament infiltration and short-circuiting of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASLMBs). Herein, it is discovered that Li2CO3 at the GBs of Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) sheets is reduced to highly electron-conductive LiCx during cycling, resulting in lithium penetration of LLZO. The ionic and electronic conductivity of the GBs within LLZO can be simultaneously tuned using sintered Li3AlF6. The generated LiAlO2 (LAO) infusion and F-doping at the GBs of LLZO (LAO-LLZOF) significantly reduce the Li2CO3 content and broaden the energy bandgap of LLZO, which decreases the electronic conductivity of LAO-LLZOF. LAO forms a 3D continuous ion transport network at the GB that significantly improves the total ionic conductivity. Lithium penetration within LLZO is suppressed and an all-solid-state LiFePO4/LAO-LLZOF/Li battery stably cycled for 5500 cycles at 3 C. This work reveals the chemistry of Li2CO3 at the LLZO GBs during cycling, presents a novel lithium penetration mechanism within garnet electrolytes, and provides an innovative method to simultaneously regulate the ion and electron transport at the GBs in garnet electrodes for advanced ASLMBs.

Abstract:Al-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (Al–LLZO) solid electrolytes were sintered at 1150 °C for 8 h in atmosphere of oxygen, argon and air (named as Al–LLZO–O2, Al–LLZO–Ar and Al–LLZO–Air, respectively). All the Al–LLZO samples exhibited a single cubic garnet-type structure. The sample of Al–LLZO–O2 possessed the highest relative density (95.60%) and the largest average grain size among the three Al–LLZO samples. Furthermore, owing to its high relative density and small number of grain boundaries, Al–LLZO–O2 demonstrated a higher lithium-ion conductivity than Al–LLZO–Ar and Al–LLZO–Air.

Abstract:The Li + conductivity of Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid electrolytes was optimized by controlling the addition of the dopant (Al) into the crystal structure. A solution-based synthesis method was used to minimize Al segregation and ensure a homogeneous substitution into the garnet framework. Neutron and x-ray diffraction were used to monitor the structural transition from tetragonal to cubic LLZO. It was found that the critical dopant concentration (xc) required to stabilize the cubic phase was 0.18 mol pfu. The maximum ionic conductivity of 5.54 x 10-4 S/cm was obtained at the critical composition. The enhanced conductivity was achieved by accurately controlling the vacancy density at the active Li octahedral sites. Neutron structure refinements were used to validate the changes in Li vacancy distribution at different dopant concentrations. Impedance measurements reveal a strong dependence of Li+ transport properties on Al concentration, specifically around the critical dopant concentration xc = 0.18 mol pfu. These findings demonstrate the importance of fine-tuning composition and provide guidance for engineering improvements in ionic conductivity.
