Abstract:The dense, uniform and conformal electron transport layers (ETLs) will largely promote charge separation and extraction. Here, the mixed acid (hydrochloric acid and nitric acid) was used to regulate preparation process and enhance utilization of materials, and the colloids of tin oxide (SnO2) nanocrystals were prepared through hydrothermal process. The complete dissolution of Sn source can increase purity, produce homogeneous precursor, reduce grain sizes and improve film-coverage. As confirmed, a coherent interlayer at the SnO2 ETLs/perovskite interfaces will be achieved by coupling a Cl-bonded SnO2 film with a Cl-containing perovskite precursor. This thin coherent interlayer will largely reduce interface traps, enhance rapid carrier extraction, and impede charge recombination. The uniform polymer phase of (PEO)120-(PPO)30 will be used to passivate traps at the grain boundaries of perovskite films and further improve the photovoltaic performance. The maximum energy conversion efficiency (23.17%, a VOC of 1.153 V, a JSC of 24.75 mA cm−2 and a FF of 0.812) of perovskite solar cells was achieved. The charge separation, extraction, and recombination kinetics (charge dynamic process) was determined by the related characterization techniques. The functionalized SnO2-ETLs and formed coherent interlayer will provide a simple strategy to effectively decrease interface traps, enhance charge extraction, and facilitate development of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:To produce highly efficient and repeatable perovskite solar cells (PSCs), comprehending interfacial loss and developing approaches to ameliorate interfacial features is essential. Nonradiative recombination at the SnO2–perovskite interface in SnO2-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) leads to significant potential loss and variability in device performance. To improve the quality of the SnO2 electron transport layer, a novel polymer-doped SnO2 matrix, specifically using polyacrylic acid, was developed. This matrix is formed by spin-coating a SnO2 colloidal solution that includes polymers. The polymer aids in dispersing nanoparticles within the substrate and is evenly distributed in the SnO2 solution. As a result of the polymer addition, the density and wetting properties of the SnO2 layer substantially improved. Subsequently, perovskite-based photovoltaic devices comprising SnO2 and Spiro-OMeTAD layers and using (FAPbI3)0.97(MAPbBr3)0.03 perovskite are constructed. These optimized devices exhibited an increased efficiency of 17.2% when compared to the 15.7% power conversion efficiency of the control device. The incorporation of polymers in the electron transport layer potentially enables even better performance in planar perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:This study reports on interconnected SnO2 electron transport layers (composed of presynthesized SnO2 nanocrystals interconnected by amorphous phase SnOx) processed at low temperature (120 °C) for highly efficient flexible perovskite solar cells. Herein, the amorphous phase SnOx serves as an effective binder to connect the SnO2 nanocrystals to obtain ultra‐smooth electron transport layers. Further characterization of the charge carrier kinetics at the perovskite/electron transport layer interface confirms that the interconnected SnO2 nanocrystals layer facilitates electron extraction and retards nonradiative charge carrier recombination. Consequently, a power conversion efficiency of 16.29% is achieved for flexible perovskite solar cells using the interconnected SnO2 electron transport layer on indium tin oxide/polyethylene terephthalate substrates.

Abstract:The ideal charge transport materials should exhibit a proper energy level, high carrier mobility, sufficient conductivity, and excellent charge extraction ability. Here, a novel electron transport material was designed and synthesized by using a simple and facile solvothermal method, which is composed of the core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles. Thanks to the good match between the energy level of the SnO2 shell and the high electron mobility of the core ZnO nanoparticles, the PCE of inorganic perovskite solar cells has reached 14.35% (J(SC): 16.45 mA cm(-2), V-OC: 1.11 V, FF: 79%), acting core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles as the electron transfer layer. The core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles size is 8.1 nm with the SnO2 shell thickness of 3.4 nm, and the electron mobility is seven times more than SnO2 nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the uniform core-shell ZnO@SnO2 nanoparticles is extremely favorable to the growth of inorganic perovskite films. These preliminary results strongly suggest the great potential of this novel electron transfer material in high-efficiency perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:SnO 2 electron transport layers (ETLs) had an essential role in the n-i-p structure of perovskite solar cells. Improving the quality of the electron transport layer and enhancing interfacial contacts were key factors in the fabrication of high-performance perovskite solar cells. Therefore, a non-ionic polymeric polyacrylamide (PAM) modified SnO 2 colloidal solution with improved clustering of SnO 2 nanoparticles was presented to form a uniform and dense SnO 2 electron transport layer. The results demonstrated that no pinhole pores were found at the interface where the PAM-modified electron transport layer and the light absorbing layer came into contact, a structure that facilitated carrier transport and reduced carrier recombination at the interface location. Further beneficial effects were revealed by femtosecond Fs-TA measurements and trap of states (tDOS) analysis, where the carrier lifetime τ 2 decreased from 306.7 ps to 137.8 ps and the trap density of states of the film also decreased significantly. Correspondingly, the SnO 2 -PAM device exhibited an optimum efficiency of 21.61 %. Fantastic device stability was obtained due to the interaction of excellent contact at the SnO 2 /FAPbI 3 interface, and 85 % of the initial efficiency was maintained when placed in air for 1000 h for photo-aging tests, thereby improving the stability of FAPbI 3 grains. This method of improving the quality of tin oxide colloidal solutions provided a novel and simple way to prepare efficient perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:For the last decade, perovskite solar cells have been in rapid growth, highlighted as a representative next-generation solar cell. Although SnO 2 is suitable as the electron-transporting material of perovskite solar cells, there also have been some obstacles in the formation of uniform and thin layers of SnO 2 on the uneven FTO substrate. In this work, we investigated polymer-assisted fabrication methods to achieve conformal coating of SnO 2 nanoparticles on rough FTO substrate, finally leading to improved performance of perovskite solar cells due to enhanced coverage and optimized electron-transporting property. As a result, we fabricated an efficient perovskite solar cells with a power conversion efficiency of 24% by employing polymer-capped SnO 2 nanoparticles as electron-transporting layer.

Abstract:SnO2 is one of the most popular low-cost inorganic electron transport materials for perovskite solar cells. However, the agglomeration of SnO2 nanoparticles causes their uneven distribution and the existence of pinholes, seriously hindering the electron migration across SnO2/perovskite interface and limiting the device performance. The poor wettability between the SnO2 film and the perovskite precursor solution also impairs the growth of perovskite grains. In this work, an innovative strategy was employed to produce an organic-inorganic hybrid electron transport layer (ETL) by fabricating a high-quality polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/SnO2 perovskite film with few defects and good wettability. In turn, a PVP-SnO2 based device exhibits elevated power conversion efficiency (PCE) (18.98%) and adequate reproducibility along with superior operational stability.

Abstract:The solution processing of polycrystalline perovskite films introduces trap states that can adversely affect their optoelectronic properties. Motivated by the use of small-molecule surfactants to improve the optoelectronic performance of perovskites, we demonstrate the use of polymers with coordinating groups to improve the performance of solution-processed semiconductor films. The use of these polymer modifiers results in a marked change in the electronic properties of the films, as measured by both carrier dynamics and overall device performance. The devices grown with the polymer poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) show significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency from 16.9 ± 0.7% to 18.8 ± 0.8% (champion efficiency, 20.2%) from a reverse scan and stabilized champion efficiency from 17.5 to 19.1% [under a bias of 0.94 V and AM (air mass) 1.5-G, 1-sun illumination over 30 min] compared to controls without any passivation. Treating the perovskite film with PVP enables a VOC of up to 1.16 V, which is among the best reported for a CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite solar cell and one of the lowest voltage deficits reported for any perovskite to date. In addition, perovskite solar cells treated with PVP show a long shelf lifetime of up to 90 days (retaining 85% of the initial efficiency) and increased by a factor of more than 20 compared to those without any polymer (degrading to 85% after ~4 days). Our work opens up a new class of chemical additives for improving perovskite performance and should pave the way toward improving perovskite solar cells for high efficiency and stability.

Abstract:Planar structures for halide perovskite solar cells have recently garnered attention, due to their simple and low-temperature device fabrication processing. Unfortunately, planar structures typically show I–V hysteresis and lower stable device efficiency compared with mesoporous structures, especially for TiO2-based n-i-p devices. SnO2, which has a deeper conduction band and higher electron mobility compared with traditional TiO2, could enhance charge transfer from perovskite to electron transport layers, and reduce charge accumulation at the interface. Here we report low-temperature solution-processed SnO2 nanoparticles as an efficient electron transport layer for perovskite solar cells. Our SnO2-based devices are almost free of hysteresis, which we propose is due to the enhancement of electron extraction. By introducing a PbI2 passivation phase in the perovskite layer, we obtain a 19.9 ± 0.6% certified efficiency. The devices can be easily processed under low temperature (150 ∘C), offering an efficient method for the large-scale production of perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:The charge transport layer is crucial to the performance and stability of the perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Compared with other conventional metal oxide electron transport materials, SnO2 has a deeper conduction band and higher electron mobility, and can efficiently serve as an electron transport layer to facilitate charge extraction and transfer. Herein, an optimized low-temperature solution-processed SnO2 electron transport layer is achieved by doping polyethylenimine polyelectrolyte into SnO2 for the first time in the PSCs. It is found that the performance of all aspects of the doped SnO2 film is improved over that of the pristine SnO2 film. The better energy level alignment, larger built-in field, enhanced electron transfer/extraction, and reduced charge recombination all contribute to the improved device performance. Finally, a PSC with a power conversion efficiency of 20.61% is successfully prepared under low temperature below 150 degrees C. Moreover, the stability of the doped SnO2-based device is also greatly improved.

Abstract:Understanding interfacial loss and the ways to improving interfacial property is critical to fabricate highly efficient and reproducible perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In SnO2-based PSCs, nonradiative recombination sites at the SnO2-perovskite interface lead to a large potential loss and performance variation in the resulting photovoltaic devices. Here, a novel SnO2-in-polymer matrix (i.e., polyethylene glycol) is devised as the electron transporting layer to improve the film quality of the SnO2 electron transporting layer. The SnO2-in-polymer matrix is fabricated through spin-coating a polymer-incorporated SnO2 colloidal ink. The polymer is uniformly dispersed in SnO2 colloidal ink and promotes the nanoparticle disaggregation in the ink. Owing to polymer incorporation, the compactness and wetting property of SnO2 layer is significantly ameliorated. Finally, photovoltaic devices based on Cs(0.05)FA(0.81)MA(0.14)PbI(2.55)Br(0.45) perovskite sandwiched between SnO2 and Spiro-OMeTAD layer are fabricated. Compared with the averaging power conversion efficiency of 16.2% with 1.2% deviation for control devices, the optimized devices exhibit an improved averaging efficiency of 19.5% with 0.25% deviation. The conception of polymer incorporation in the electron transporting layer paves a way to further increase the performance of planar perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:A high-quality polycrystalline SnO2 electron-transfer layer is synthesized through an in situ, low-temperature, and unique butanol-water solvent assisted process. By choosing a mixture of butanol and water as a solvent, the crystallinity is enhanced and the crystallization temperature is lowered to 130 degrees C, making the process fully compatible with flexible plastic substrates. The best solar cells fabricated using these layers achieve an efficiency of 20.52% (average 19.02%) which is among the best in the class of planar n-i-p-type perovskite (MAPbI(3)) solar cells. The strongly reduced crystallization temperature of the materials allows their use on a flexible substrate, with a resulting device efficiency of 18%.
Multifunctional zwitterion modified SnO2 nanoparticles for efficient and stable planar perovskite solar cells

Abstract:SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely employed as electron transport layers (ETLs) in planar n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Perfect SnO2 ETL/perovskite interface plays a key role in high efficiency PSCs, however, the main issues caused by the self-aggregation of the SnO2 NPs and the interface recombination limit the further improvement of device performance. Here, l-carnitine hydrochloride (L-ch) zwitterion with multiple functional groups has been incorporated into SnO2 NP solution for high-efficiency PSCs. The results demonstrate that the unique coordination complexes assembled between L-ch zwitterion and SnO2 NPs can inhibit the aggregation of SnO2 NPs, benefiting for the formation of more compact film with reduced roughness. Simultaneously, the L-ch zwitterion can adjust the electronic properties of SnO2 and promote the carrier transport between perovskite and SnO2 ETL with well aligned energy level. Moreover, the -COO- and –N+ (CH3)3 groups can passivate uncoordinated Pb2+ and MA vacancies defects in the perovskite film, respectively. Therefore, by using SnO2/L-ch as the ETL, the efficiency of champion MAPbI3 PSCs can be increased from 18.77% to 20.56%, with reduced hysteresis and improved stability.

Abstract:Chemical bath deposition (CBD) is generally used to fabricate SnO X electron transport layer (ETL) for perovskite solar cells, whereas a lack of understanding of the reaction mechanism hampers further improvement of device performance. Here, we elucidate the reaction mechanism by monitoring the SnO X growth process via a series of advanced X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies. For the first time, we successfully modulated the nucleation and crystal growth of SnO X during the CBD process by introducing complexing agent via inherently forming a self -assembled monolayer on the outmost surface of SnO X . The complexing agents can assist the heterogeneous nucleation and crystal growth of SnO X . By a comparison study of different complexing agents, we found that the 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonate sodium not only assists in achieving a high -quality SnO X ETL, but also serves as a bridge to connect with perovskite via coordination interactions. Leveraging these insights, we achieved a champion efficiency of 24.2 % for perovskite solar cells with - 2300 h stability at ambient condition.

Abstract:SnO2-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) suffer severe nonradiative recombination owing to inefficient carrier extraction and poor perovskite film quality hindering their device performance. It is highly necessary to develop a desirable strategy to minimize nonradiative recombination losses by modifying SnO2 interface and optimizing perovskite film quality. Herein, Cesium Sulfate (Cs2SO4) is used to modify SnO2 interface and regulate the crystal growth process of perovskite. The Cs2SO4-modified SnO2 demonstrates superior charge extraction and enhanced conductivity as compared to untreated SnO2 (control). Furthermore, SnO2/Cs2SO4 fabricated perovskite film exhibits reduced defect density and suppressed no-radiative recombination. Through this interface modification strategy, effective carrier extraction and recombination suppression are achieved synchronously. These favorable results translate into an efficiency enhancement from 21.51% to 22.66%. In addition, SnO2/Cs2SO4-based PSCs also display improved device stability owing to the chemical interconnection between the SnO2/Cs2SO4 and the light absorption layer. This work provides a way of enhancing carrier extraction and suppressing nonradiative recombination to realize efficiency and stability enhancement.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have rapidly developed and achieved power conversion efficiencies of over 20% with diverse technical routes. Particularly, planar‐structured PSCs can be fabricated with low‐temperature (≤150 °C) solution‐based processes, which is energy efficient and compatible with flexible substrates. Here, the efficiency and stability of planar PSCs are enhanced by improving the interface contact between the SnO2 electron‐transport layer (ETL) and the perovskite layer. A biological polymer (heparin potassium, HP) is introduced to regulate the arrangement of SnO2 nanocrystals, and induce vertically aligned crystal growth of perovskites on top. Correspondingly, SnO2–HP‐based devices can demonstrate an average efficiency of 23.03% on rigid substrates with enhanced open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.162 V and high reproducibility. Attributed to the strengthened interface binding, the devices obtain high operational stability, retaining 97% of their initial performance (power conversion efficiency, PCE > 22%) after 1000 h operation at their maximum power point under 1 sun illumination. Besides, the HP‐modified SnO2 ETL exhibits promising potential for application in flexible and large‐area devices.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fabricated with a low-temperature (<= 150 degrees C) SnO2-based electron transport layer (ETL) have been rapidly developing and demonstrate high power conversion efficiency (PCE). To further enhance the efficiency and stability of PSCs, high-quality perovskite and SnO2 films are needed, and the interfacial performance between the SnO2 ETL and the perovskite layer needs to be improved. In this work, potassium p-aminobenzoate (KPAB) was introduced to regulate the SnO2 ETL to obtain reduced defects and an excellent wetting property, inducing vertically aligned crystal growth of the perovskites on the interface side of the SnO2 ETL. In addition, the potassium ions were able to interact with the halogen ions of the perovskite, which further enhanced the quality of the perovskite film. Due to the abovementioned strengths of KPAB, we demonstrated that devices based on KPAB-SnO2 have a higher power conversion efficiency (19.03 %), better reproducibility, and superior operational stability compared to devices with pristine SnO2.
