Comfort and Coordination among Interprofessional Care Providers Involved in Intubations in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Abstract:Background: Successful execution of invasive procedures in acute care settings, including tracheal intubation, requires careful coordination of an interprofessional team. The stress inherent to the intensive care unit (ICU) environment may threaten the optimal communication and planning necessary for the safe execution of this complex procedure. The objective of this study is to characterize the perceptions of interprofessional team members surrounding tracheal intubations in the pediatric ICU (PICU). Methods: This is a single-center survey-based study of staff involved in the intubation of pediatric patients admitted to a tertiary level academic PICU. Physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists (RT) involved in tracheal intubations were queried via standardized, discipline-specific electronic surveys regarding their involvement in procedural planning and overall awareness of and comfort with the intubation plan. Qualitative variables were assessed by both Likert scales and free-text comments that were grouped and analyzed thematically. Results: One hundred and eleven intubation encounters were included during the study time period, of which 93 (84%) had survey responses from at least 2 professional teams. Among those included in the analysis, the survey was completed 244 times by members of the PICU teams including 86 responses from physicians, 76 from nurses, and 82 from RTs. Survey response rates were >80% from each provider team. There were significant differences in interprofessional team comfort with nurses feeling less well informed and comfortable with the intubation plan and process compared to physicians and RTs (p < 0.001 for both). Qualitative themes including clear communication, adequate planning and preparation prior to procedure initiation, and clear definition of roles emerged among both affirmative and constructive comments. Conclusions: Exploration of provider perceptions and emergence of constructive themes expose opportunities for teamwork improvement strategies involving intubations in the PICU. The use of a preintubation checklist may improve organization and communication amongst team members, increase provider morale, decrease team stress levels, and, ultimately, may improve patient outcomes during this high stakes, coordinated event.
The meaning of being conscious during surgery with local or regional anesthesia-A phenomenological hermeneutic study

Abstract:Background: With increasing prevalence of surgery under local or regional anesthesia, which allows patients to remain conscious during the intraoperative phase, there is a growing need to comprehend the lived experiences associated with this practice. Objective: This study aimed to illuminate the lived experiences of individuals who remained conscious during surgical intervention under local or regional anesthesia. Design: A qualitative design was chosen. Settings: Participants in the present study were recruited from three surgical wards located in central Sweden using a purposive sampling strategy. The surgical disciplines included ear, gynecological, hernioplasty, orthopedic, and vessel surgeries. Participants: Fourteen narrative interviews were conducted with individuals who had undergone elective surgery while conscious. Methods: Verbatim transcribed text was analyzed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic method. Results: The lived experience of being conscious during surgery was marked by feelings of hope alongside a sense of losing one's identity and experiencing destabilization. Structural analysis revealed two themes. The first theme, 'being in the hands of others', encompassed subthemes such as 'entering an unfamiliar environment and procedure,' 'losing foothold and a sense of self-identity,' and 'enduring unexpected or anticipated discomfort.' The second theme, 'managing the inevitable for future health concerns,' involved subthemes such as 'pursuing self-acceptance of the situation,' 'entrusting the professionals while seeking signs of a smooth procedure,' and 'Enhancing own resilience through continuous support. Conclusions: Beyond the patient's physical well-being during surgery, the OR team should acknowledge the "person" component and focus on their emotional and social needs in this vulnerable situation. The four meta-paradigms of nursing-person, health, environment, and nursing-significantly influence the conscious patient's experience. The communication experience of tracheostomy patients with nurses in the intensive care unit: A phenomenological study

Abstract:Objectives: To describe the experience and sources of comfort and discomfort in tracheostomy patients, when they communicate with nurses in the Intensive Care Unit. Research methodology/design: Benner's interpretive phenomenology. Data were collected through: a) semi-structured interviews conducted with the patients after leaving the intensive care unit; b) participant observation; c) situated interviews with intensive care nurses. Setting: The intensive care unit of a hospital in Northern Italy. Findings: Eight patients and seven nurses were included in this study. Two main themes were identified 1) feeling powerless and frustrated due to the impossibility to use voice to communicate; 2) facing continual misunderstanding, resignation, and anger during moments of difficulty and/or communication misunderstandings. The main communication discomfort factors were: struggling with not knowing what was happening, feeling like others had given up on me, living in isolation and feeling invisible. The main comfort factors were: being with family members, feeling reassured by having a call bell nearby and nurses' presence. Conclusions: This study highlights the important role of communication in tracheostomy patients in intensive care and how closely it is linked to all the aspects of a person's life, which cannot be underestimated as just not being able to use one's voice.

Abstract:Aim The study aimed to ascertain a framework of nursing practices to elicit consent from lightly sedated ventilated patients. Methods Study participants were nurses working in intensive care and critical care wards, whose observations and semi‐structured interviews were assessed using a modified grounded theory approach. Results A total of 15 concepts were generated, from which three categories and three subcategories were generated. Category 1: Nurses taking the lead in providing assistance by sharing signs of change while continuing the invasive treatment, working to maintain the patient's life, alleviation of pain, promotion of awareness of the current situation, and acclimating them to the treatment environment as the basis for building a relationship between patients and nurses. Category 2: Searching for points of agreement and reaching a compromise involves the nurse drawing out the patient's thoughts, hopes, and expectations, and transforming the relationship into a patient‐centered one by sharing goals with the patient in order to achieve them. Category 3: Organizing collaboration within care supported the patient's ability to move safely while maintaining the patient's pace to achieve shared goals, and guided the patient's independent actions. Conclusions Even when patients recover from an acute life‐threatening situation, their physical sensations remain vague and their functional decline continues. Rather than simply eliciting consent from patients, the structure of nursing practice to elicit such response from patients involves drawing out the patient's thoughts, hopes, and expectations, as well as guiding the patient toward goals that they have created together with the nurse and utilizing the patient's strengths to achieve these goals.

Abstract:Many principles that originate in the operating room and in fluid mechanics modeling are relevant to endotracheal intubation in the pulmonary and critical care setting. These factors should be appreciated by pulmonologists and intensivists, as they may contribute to improved safety during the process of airway access. The usual reflex responses to stimulation of oropharyngeal and upper airway receptors include glottic closure, hypertension, tachycardia, and reflex bronchoconstriction. These reflexes can be modified by technical or pharmacologic reduction of sensory receptor stimulation or by parenteral agents, which diminish efferent responses, including anesthetics, vasoactive drugs, and adrenergic blockers. Topical anesthesia and parenteral sedatives may be the preferred agents when overall risk and benefit are considered. Intubation also has consequences related to a reduction in airway caliber, to changes in respiratory mechanics, and to the creation of turbulent airflow in the endotracheal tube.

Abstract:Objective: To explore intensive care nurses' experiences with and perceptions of using a standardised central venous catheter procedure to prevent bacterial contamination when accessing patients' central venous catheters. Design and methodology: This study employed an interpretative qualitative design. Data was collected through semi-structured, individual interviews and Qualitative Content Analysis was used in data analysis. Setting: Seven Norwegian intensive care nurses were recruited using a purposeful sampling strategy. Findings: Three main themes were identified. 1). Individualised practice revealed varying knowledge of and commitment to following the central line procedure. 2). Risk desensitisation revealed a continuous use of central lines, acute situations and a lack of information on infections, which affect usage. 3). Professional working culture showed nurse-to-nurse interaction, which promoted compliance with the procedure. Their interplay created a team spirit whereby nurses worked together to improve patient safety. Conclusions: This study shows the diversity and complexity of factors affecting intensive care nurses' procedure compliance when accessing central lines. The themes of Individualised practice and Risk desensitisation pose a substantial threat to healthcare quality and patient safety in the ICU. Exposure to infection risks could be reduced by applying these themes to inform and strengthen continuing education programs and audit processes. The theme of Professional working culture shows the positive influence nurses can have on each other, promoting compliance when accessing central lines. Intensive care nurses should be aware that their voice matters and that challenging poor practice does not have to be confrontational. Leadership should look for ways to encourage this type of nurse-to-nurse interaction.

Abstract:Background Optimising sedation use is key to timely extubation. Whilst sedation protocols may be used to guide critical care nurses' management of sedation, sedation management and decision-making is complex, influenced by multiple factors related to patients' circumstances, intensive care unit design and the workforce. Aim To explore (i) critical care nurses' experiences managing sedation in mechanically ventilated patients and (ii) the factors that influence their sedation-related decision-making. Design Qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews. Data were analysed using Braun and Clarke's six-step thematic analysis. Setting and participants This study was conducted in a 26-bed level 3 accredited ICU, in a private hospital in Melbourne, Australia. The majority of patients are admitted following elective surgery. Critical care nurses, who were permanently employed as a registered nurse, worked at least 16 h per week, and cared for ventilated patients, were invited to participate. Findings Thirteen critical care nurses participated. Initially, participants suggested their experiences managing sedation were linked to local unit policy and learning. Further exploration revealed that experiences were synonymous with descriptors of factors influencing sedation decision-making according to three themes: (i) Learning from past experiences, (ii) Situational awareness and (iii) Prioritising safety. Nurses relied on their cumulative knowledge from prior experiences to guide decision-making. Situational awareness about other emergent priorities in the unit, staffing and skill-mix were important factors in guiding sedation decision-making. Safety of patients and staff was essential, at times overriding goals to reduce sedation. Conclusion Sedation decision making cannot be considered in isolation. Rather, sedation decision making must take into account outcomes of patient assessment, emergent priorities, unit and staffing factors and safety concerns. Implications for clinical practice Opportunities for ongoing education are essential to promote nurses' situational awareness of other emergent unit priorities, staffing and skill-mix, in addition to evidence-based sedation management and decision making.

Abstract:Objective To explore the oral care experience of head nurses in nursing of intensive care unit (ICU)patients with endotracheal intubation.Methods The phenomenological methodology was used in the study. Semi-structured in-depth interviews of 10 head nurses from 10 ICUs of 7 tertiary hospitals in Shanghai were conducted.Results The status quo of oral care for intubated patients was in confusion.Theoperation standards were lack of specific evaluation and not in line with clinical practice. Yet there was no standard system for oral care assessment,evaluation and training of ICU nurses. The oral care appliances were not practical. The ICU nurses were shorthanded along with heavy workload. But the awareness and attention on oral care in head nurses and clinical nurses had beenimproved.Conclusion It is urgent to compileevidence-based clinical practice guidelines for oral care of the patients with endotracheal intubation,improve oral care appliances and ICU management system,to promote the quality of clinical nursing practice.
Assessing changes in a patient's condition - perspectives of intensive care nurses

Abstract:Aim: To explore the phenomenon of assessing changes in patients' conditions in intensive care units from the perspectives of experienced intensive care nurses. Background: Providing safe care for patients in intensive care units requires an awareness and perception of the signs that indicate changes in a patient's condition. Nurses in intensive care units play an essential role in preventing the deterioration of a patient's condition and in improving patient outcomes. Design and methods: This hermeneutic phenomenological study conducted close observations and in-depth interviews with 11 intensive care nurses. The nurses' experience ranged from 7 to 28 years in the intensive care unit. Data were collected at two intensive care units in two Norwegian university hospitals. The analysis was performed using the reflective methods of van Manen. Findings: An overarching theme of 'sensitive situational attention' was identified, in which the nurses were sensitive in relation to a patient and understood the significance of a given situation. This theme was further unfolded in four subthemes: (1) being sensitive and emotionally present, (2) being systematic and concentrating, (3) being physically close to the bedside and (4) being trained and familiar with the routines. Conclusions: Nurses understand each patient's situation and foresee clinical eventualities through a sensitive and attentive way of thinking and working. This requires nurses to be present at the bedside with both their senses (sight, hearing, smell and touch) and emotions and to work in a concentrated and systematic manner. Knowledge about the unique patient exists in interplay with past experiences and medical knowledge, which are essential for nurses to understand the situation. Relevance to clinical practice: Clinical practice should develop routines that enable nurses to be present at the bedside and to work in a concentrated and systematic manner. Furthermore, providing safe care requires nurses to be sensitive and attentive to each patient's unique situation.

Abstract:Background: There are no published minute-by-minute physiological assessment data for endotracheal intubation (ETT) performed in the intensive care unit (ICU). The majority of physiological data is available from Europe and North America where etomidate is the induction agent administered most commonly. Aims: The aim of this study was to describe the feasibility of obtaining minute-by-minute physiological and medication data surrounding ETT in an Australian tertiary ICU and to assess its associated outcomes. Methods: We performed a single-centre feasibility observational study. We obtained minute-by-minute data on physiological variables and medications for 15 min before and 30 min after ETT. We assessed feasibility as enrolled to screened patient ratio and completeness of data collection in enrolled patients. Severe hypotension (systolic blood pressure < 65 mmHg) and severe hypoxaemia (pulse oximetry saturation < 80%) were the secondary clinical outcomes. Results: We screened 43 patients and studied 30 patients. The median age was 58.5 (interquartile range: 49-70) years, and 18 (60%) were male. Near-complete (97%) physiological and medication data were obtained in all patients at all times. Overall, 15 (50%) ETTs occurred after hours (17:30-08:00) and 90% were by video laryngoscopy with a 90% first-pass success rate. Prophylactic vasopressors were used in 50% of ETTs. Fentanyl was used in all except one ETT at a median dose of 2.5 mcg/kg. Propofol (63%) or midazolam (50%) were used as adjuncts at low dose. Rocuronium was used in all but one patient. There were no episodes of severe hypotension and only one episode of short-lived severe hypoxaemia. Conclusion: Minute-by-minute recording of ETT-associated physiological changes in the ICU was feasible but only fully available in two-thirds of the screened patients. ETT was based on fentanyl induction, low-dose adjunctive sedation, and frequent prophylactic vasopressor therapy and was associated with no severe hypotension and a single short-lived episode of severe hypoxaemia.
Meanings of being critically ill in a sound-intensive ICU patient room - a phenomenological hermeneutical study

Abstract:The aim of this study was to illuminate the meanings of being critically ill in a sound-intensive ICU patient room, as disclosed through patients' narratives. Patient rooms in ICUs are filled with loud activity and studies have revealed sound levels comparable to those of a busy road above the patient's head. There is a risk that the sound or noise is disturbing and at worst a major problem for the patient, but there is a lack of knowledge concerning the patients' own experiences. Thirteen patients were asked to narrate their experiences of the sound environment in ICU patient rooms. The interviews were analyzed using a phenomenological- hermeneutical method inspired by the philosophy of Ricoeur. Six themes emerged from the analysis. Conclusion: The meanings of being a patient in a sound- intensive environment were interpreted as never knowing what to expect next regarding noise, but also of being situated in the middle of an uncontrollable barrage of noise, unable to take cover or disappear. This condition is not to be seen as static; for some patients there is movement and change over time. The meanings indicate that the unpredictable shifts between silence and disturbing sounds stress the critically ill patient and impede sleep and recovery. Our findings indicate the need to reduce disturbing and unexpected sounds and noise around critically ill patients in high-tech environments in order to facilitate wellbeing, sleep and recovery. Nurses have a vital role in developing such an environment.
Perspectives on Sedation Among Interdisciplinary Team Members in ICU: A Survey Study

Abstract:Objective: To explore the interdisciplinary team members' beliefs and attitudes about sedation when caring for mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Setting: A 17-bed cardiothoracic ICU at a tertiary care academic hospital in Colorado. Subjects: All nurses, physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs), respiratory therapists, physical therapists (PTs), and occupational therapists (OTs) who work in the cardiothoracic ICU. Interventions: None. Measurements and main results: We modified a validated survey instrument to evaluate perspectives on sedation across members of the interdisciplinary ICU team. Survey responses were collected anonymously from 111 members (81% response rate). Respondents were predominantly female (70 [63%]). Most respondents across disciplines (94%) believed that their sedation practice made a difference in patients' outcomes. More nurses (48%), APPs (62%), and respiratory therapists (50%) believed that sedation could help alleviate the psychologic stress that patients experience on the ventilator than physicians (19%) and PTs/OTs (0%) (p = 0.008). The proportion of respondents who preferred to be sedated if they were mechanically ventilated themselves varied widely by discipline: respiratory therapists (88%), nurses (83%), APPs (54%), PTs/OTs (38%), and physicians (19%) (p < 0.001). In our exploratory analysis, listeners of an educational podcast had beliefs and attitudes more aligned with best evidence-based practices than nonlisteners. Conclusions: We discovered significant interdisciplinary differences in the beliefs and attitudes regarding sedation use in the ICU. Since all ICU team members are involved in managing mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU, aligning the mental models of sedation may be essential to enhance interprofessional collaboration and promote sedation best practices.

Abstract:This KAP (knowledge, attitude and practice) study, carried out from February to June 2008, aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding the Pap smear test among users of a primary health unit (PHU) and to verify any association with sociodemographic variables. The sample was comprised of 250 women. The knowledge, attitude and practice related to the examination were adequate in 40.4%, 28% and 67.6% of respondents, respectively. The results demonstrate higher proportions of adequate knowledge and attitude with schooling (>9 years) and age (>35 years). It is essential to seek specific answers regarding this issue in order to direct integrated actions of health education, thus ensuring greater access, adhesion and return of the women for the examination results.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To assess knowledge of nutrition and physical activity; examine associations of knowledge with sociodemographic and anthropometric parameters; and evaluate the relationship between knowledge and practice in adults. Design In a cross-sectional design, 720 adults were selected using random sampling. Data on anthropometry, body fat, diet, physical activity, and nutrition and physical activity knowledge were collected using standardized questionnaires. Tertiles were used to categorize nutrition knowledge (NK) and physical activity knowledge (PK). Settings Subjects selected through routine health checks from hospitals, housing societies and residential areas. Subjects A total of 720 adults (361 men) aged 35–50 years participated. Results Mean age was 42·7 (sd 9·4) years and mean BMI was 25·8 (sd 5·0) kg/m2. Mean energy intake was 64 %, protein was 68 % and fat was 144 % of the RDA. Mean NK and PK scores were 10·2 (sd 2·9) and 6·5 (sd 1·7), respectively, and were similar across genders (P>0·05). Individuals with higher education exhibited significantly higher NK and PK. Individuals with high fat had significantly higher NK and PK (P<0·05) than participants with normal fat percentage. Overweight and obese individuals had significantly higher PK (P<0·05). Multivariate regression modelling indicated that NK was positively associated with dietary intakes of leafy vegetables, salads and sprouts but negatively associated with fruit intake. BMI, television and reading time were positively associated with PK, even after adjusting for sociodemographic status. Conclusions There is a need for increased efforts towards developing health education programmes focusing on transforming nutrition and physical activity knowledge into practice and adherence to guidelines.

Design, setting, and participants: Cross-sectional analysis of survey data from (1) a volunteer sample of inpatient nurses in a tertiary care, freestanding pediatric hospital in the Midwest, assigned to clinical wards that provide care for children with tracheostomy tubes and (2) a consecutive sample of families whose child underwent tracheostomy tube placement at the same institution between March 1 and December 31, 2013. Main outcomes and measures: Nurse and parental comfort in managing acute and established tracheostomy tubes. Nursing data were analyzed with attention to years' experience and primary unit of practice. Results: Respondents included 129 of 820 nurses (16% response rate) and family members of 19 of 38 children (50% response rate). When queried about changing established tracheostomies, 59 of 128 nurses (46%) reported being "totally comfortable," including 46 of 82 intensive care unit (ICU) nurses (56%) vs 13 of 46 floor nurses (28%) (P = .002) and 48 of 80 nurses with at least 5 years' experience (60%) vs 12 of 49 less experienced nurses (24%) (P < .001). For managing accidental decannulation of a fresh tracheostomy, 61 nurses (47%) described being completely uncomfortable, including 27 of 83 ICU nurses (33%) vs 34 of 46 floor nurses (73%) (P = .006), and 33 of 80 nurses with at least 5 years' experience (41% ) vs 28 of 49 less experienced nurses (57%) (P = .03). Most families felt prepared for discharge (16 of 17 [94%]) and found the health care team accessible (16 of 17 [94%]), although only 5 of 18 families (28%) indicated that tracheostomy teaching was consistent. Conclusions and relevance: Nurses' comfort with tracheostomy was higher among nurses with at least 5 years' experience and primary ICU location. Whereas parental comfort with tracheostomy care was high, lack of consistent instruction highlights the role for standardized education in tracheostomy care.
Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) of ICU Nurses towards Tracheal Intubation Patients' Postextubation Dysphagia: A Cross‐Sectional Study

Abstract:Aim. The aim of this study was to understand the current status of knowledge‐attitude‐practice of ICU nurses in tertiary care hospitals regarding swallowing disorders after extubation of tracheally intubated patients and to analyse the influencing factors. Design. A cross‐sectional study. Background. Most patients admitted to the ICU have an endotracheal tube, which may be the cause of acute and/or chronic problems after extubation. Therefore, training of ICU nurses and early extubation are essential to prevent these problems. Methods. A convenience sample of clinical nurses (n = 627) was selected from Grade A Hospitals in Northwest, North, and Central China as the study population. Survey instruments included the Questionnaire on ICU Nurses' Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Postextubation Swallowing Disorders in Patients with Tracheal Intubation. Data Sources. Data were sourced from structured questionnaire responses. Results. A total of 647 ICU nurses participated in this survey, with 627 valid questionnaires. The three dimensions of knowledge, attitude, practice, and the total score of the questionnaire on ICU nurses′ knowledge, attitude, and practice of postextubation swallowing disorders in patients with tracheal intubation were (6.46±3.09), (7.53±1.69), (4.89±2.00), and (18.88±5.18), respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the factors affecting the total score of PED among ICU nurses were age, nationality, professional title, job satisfaction, and mode of employment. Gender, age, nationality, and job satisfaction were the factors that influenced the score of knowledge. The influencing factors of attitude score include gender, age, nationality, section, professional title, job satisfaction, and mode of employment. The influencing factors of the score of knowledge include professional title and job satisfaction. Conclusion. The current status of ICU nurses' knowledge‐attitude‐practice regarding postextubation dysphagia in tracheally intubated patients is generally at a moderate to low level, and the level of knowledge‐attitude‐practice needs to be further improved. Implications for Nursing Management. The results of the study showed that the knowledge, attitude, and practice of ICU nurses towards tracheal intubation patients' postextubation dysphagia were in the lower middle level. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the knowledge, attitude, and practice of ICU nurses towards tracheal intubation patients' postextubation dysphagia. This may include, but is not limited to, the development of tools for assessing PED, systematic and professional training, and the development of multidisciplinary collaborative models.

Critical Care Nursing in a Resource-Constrained Setting: A Qualitative Study of Critical Care Nurses' Experiences Caring for Patients on Mechanical Ventilation

Abstract:Introduction: Managing a patient on mechanical ventilation is a vital aspect of clinical scope in intensive and critical care units. In addition, it is a highly technical, intricate, dynamic task requiring extensive knowledge and skills. Little is known about critical care nurses' experiences caring for patients on mechanical ventilation in contexts where resources are constrained, creating an empirical gap in the available body of knowledge. Objective: This study explored critical care nurses' experiences caring for patients on mechanical ventilators at an intermediate hospital in northeastern Namibia. Method: The study followed qualitative descriptive and explorative designs. The purposive sample included 13 critical care nurses who had cared for patients on mechanical ventilation for more than 6 months. Data were collected via individual unstructured interviews and analyzed using a reflexive thematic analysis approach. Results: Four themes and eight subthemes emerged. Varied personal feelings, such as feeling proud, competent, exhausted, traumatized, overwhelmed, and concerns for patients' well-being were experienced by critical care nurses. Participants described learning from colleagues in the unit and expressed concerns about not having postbasic training in critical care nursing. Negative experiences included concerns about community members' misconceptions about critical care units and mechanical ventilators, and challenges with resources, personnel, and admission procedures. Conclusion: Critical care nurses in resource-constrained settings have positive and negative experiences caring for patients on mechanical ventilators. The findings have implications for the development of support systems for critical care nurses, including induction programs, competence enhancement, psychological support, the development of guiding documents for admission, patient preparation and sensitization of community members. There is a need for this study to be replicated in other resource-constrained contexts where specialized critical care nurses are available.

Abstract:Background Excessive noise in intensive care units poses a significant challenge, impacting both patients and staff by elevating stress, disrupting recovery, and impeding effective communication among healthcare professionals. Despite the World Health Organization recommending noise levels below 35 dB, alarms in these units often surpass these limits, contributing to consistently high noise levels. Objectives The aim of this study is to explore intensive care unit patients' experiences with music therapy sessions during invasive procedures. Methods This study was conducted using a qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological methodology grounded in Heideggerian philosophy. Interventions were conducted with a music therapist, and 14 in-depth interviews were collected. Reflexive inductive thematic analysis was performed. Results/Findings From the thematic analysis extracted from the 14 personal interviews, three themes were described that represent the bulk of the experiences and emotions of the study participants following the completion of the music therapy sessions. The most noteworthy results are described in the following, organised according to each theme: (i) music therapy against noise, sounds, and light; (ii) music therapy in the face of invasive tests and techniques; and (iii) music therapy as a strategy and tool. Conclusions Music therapy has significant potential to enhance the quality of life for patients in the intensive care unit. Music therapy can promote relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, alleviate pain and discomfort, and improve emotional and physical wellbeing during patients' stay and invasive procedures.
