Abstract:Different ionic liquids (ILs) were assayed as mobile phase modifiers for the separation and determination of selenite [Se(IV)], selenate [Se(VI)], selenomethionine (SeMet) and Se-methylselenocysteine (SeMeSeCys) by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to hydride generation atomic fluorescence spectrometry (RP-HPLC-HG-AFS). The use of several ILs: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C6mim]Cl), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide and tributyl(methyl)phosphonium methylsulphate was evaluated. Also, the effect of pH, buffer type and IL concentration on the separation of Se species was studied. Complete separation was attained within 12min using a C8 column and a gradient performed with a mobile phase containing 0.1% (v/v) [C6mim]Cl at pH 6.0. The proposed method allows the separation of inorganic and organic Se species in a single chromatographic run, adding further benefits over already reported methods based on RP-HPLC. In addition, the influence of ILs on the AFS signals of each Se species was evaluated and a multivariate methodology was used for optimization of AFS sensitivity. The limits of detection were 0.92, 0.86, 1.41 and 1.19μgL-1 for Se(IV), Se(VI), SeMet and SeMeSeCys, respectively. The method was successfully applied for speciation analysis of Se in complex samples, such as wine, beer, yeast and garlic.
Simultaneous speciation of inorganic arsenic, selenium and tellurium in environmental water samples by dispersive liquid liquid microextraction combined with electrothermal vaporization inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Abstract:A new method based on dispersive liquid liquid microextraction (DLLME) combined with electrothermal vaporization inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ETV-ICP-MS) was developed for the simultaneous speciation of inorganic arsenic (As), selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te) with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) as both chelating reagent and chemical modifier. As(III), Se(IV) and Te(IV) were transformed into DDTC-chelates at pH 7 and extracted into the fine droplets formed by injecting the binary solution of bromobenzene (extraction solvent) and methanol (dispersive solvent) into the sample solution. After phase separation by centrifugation, As(III), Se(IV) and Te(IV) preconcentrated in the organic phase were determined by ETV-ICP-MS. Total inorganic As, Se and Te were obtained by reducing As(V), Se(VI) and Te(VI) to As(III), Se(IV) and Te(IV) with L-cysteine, which were then subjected to the same DLLME-ETV-ICP-MS process. The concentration of As(V), Se(VI), Te(VI) were calculated by subtracting the concentration of As(III), Se(IV) and Te(IV) from the total inorganic As, Se and Te, respectively. The main factors affecting the microextraction efficiency and the vaporization behavior of target species were investigated in detail. Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection were 2.5, 8.6 and 0.56 ng L(-1) for As(III), Se(IV) and Te(IV), respectively, with the relative standard deviations (n=7) of 8.5-9.7%. The developed method was applied to the speciation of inorganic As, Se and Te in Certified Reference Materials of GSBZ50004-88, GBW(E)080395 and GBW(E)080548 environmental waters, and the determined values are in good agreement with the certified values. The method was also successfully applied to the simultaneous speciation of inorganic As, Se and Te in different environmental water samples with the recoveries in the range of 86.3-107% for the spiked samples.

Abstract:In this work, magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (MDMSPE) coupled with dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) was developed for Se(IV) and Se(VI) followed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. MDMSPE involved the use of magnetic ZnFe2O4 nanotubes for adsorbing Se(VI). The sorbent was isolated from aqueous phase by using an external magnetic field instead of tedious centrifugation or filtration. In the following step, Se(IV) in the upper aqueous phase of MDMSPE was enriched by DLLME. Samples were prepared with artificial gastric juice to avoid the inter-conversion of target species. The main factors affecting the determination of the analytes were studied in detail. the detection limits of this method were 1.0 and 1.3 pg mL−1 for Se(IV) and Se(VI) with relative standard deviations of 4.6% and 5.1% (c = 1.0 ng mL−1, n = 9), respectively. An enrichment factor of 200 was obtained. This method was used for the detection of Se(IV) and Se(VI) in food samples without any pre-oxidation or pre-reduction operation. A certified reference material of milk powder was analysed by this method, and the determined values were in good agreement with the certified values. Recoveries of spike experiments were in the range of 91.0–107%.

Abstract:Quantification of organolead compounds in environmental water is an essential task considering much higher toxicity and bioavailability of organolead species than inorganic plumbic ions. However, the speciation of ultra-trace organolead compounds at sub ng L-1 levels is challengeable for current instruments incorporating high performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) and even offline enrichment that offer detection limits around several to tens of ng L-1. In this paper, an online solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled HPLC-ICP-MS method was developed for speciation analysis of trace lead in water. Graphene oxide bounded silica particles (GO@SiO2) was utilized as the SPE adsorbent because of its superior performance over graphene bounded silica particles and commercial C18 packing particles. High enrichment factors (1603 for TML and 1376 for TEL) were obtained when lead species in 10 mL sample was adsorbed by 1 mM sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) preconditioned GO@SiO2 at 10 mL min(-1) and then eluted by 5 mu L of 5 mM SDBS. Because of the highly efficient preconcentration, detection limits were downscaled to be 0.018 for TML and 0.023 ng L-1 for TEL with relative standard deviations below 5%. Additionally, the proposed method also yielded rapid separation of Pb(II), TML and TEL (8 min) by using green mobile phases (aqueous solutions of 5 mM sodium 1-pentanesulfonate at pH 2.5 with/without 4 mM tetrabutylammounium hydroxide). Upon successful application to fresh water, TML and TEL were only presented in the river water whereas Pb(II) was only existed in the tap water, along with accuracy validation by good spiked recoveries (93-106%). Abstract:A simple and convenient method has been developed for the pre-concentration and separation of inorganic selenium species from environmental water samples using anion exchange chromatographic column combined with high resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) measurement. 75Se(IV) and 75Se(VI) were prepared and used as tracers during the experiments. The volatility of selenium during solution evaporation was investigated to establish a reliable water samples pretreatment procedure. The parameters which affect the uptake of Se(IV) and Se(VI) on Dowex1 × 8 resin was optimized and the procedure for Se(IV) and Se(VI) separation was proposed. Both Se(IV) and Se(VI) are retained on the column in natural or alkaline solution with high distribution coefficient. The successive gradient elution of pre-concentrated species of selenium with HNO3 solution allows to differentiate between them. Se(IV) and Se(VI) finally were eluted with 0.05 mol/L HNO3 and 5.0 mol/L HNO3, respectively. The proposed method has been successfully verified using the certified reference materials (CRMs) of real water samples, and spiked recoveries for real samples were 98%-104% with 5% relative standard deviations (RSDs). The developed procedure is proved to be reliable and can be used for the rapid determination of selenium species in environmental water samples.

Abstract:A green vortex assisted based liquid-liquid microextraction (VA-LLME) method was developed for preconcentration of selenium. Ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (APDC) was used to form a hydrophobic complex with selenium in natural water, agricultural soil and food samples by GFAAS. Whereas Triton X-114, a nonionic surfactant and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ionic liquid were used for Se extraction as a dispersing medium. The conical flasks contents were shack on a vortex mixer to increase the extraction efficiency. Multivariate techniques were used to evaluate extraction parameters; pH, vortex time, APDC amount, volume of ionic liquid and Triton X-114 and centrifugation rate on the recovery of Se. The central composite design (CCD) was used for further optimization of the essential extraction parameters. The enhancement factor and limit of detection were obtained as 98.7 and 0.07 µg L-1. The certified reference materials was used for accuracy of method and the related standard deviation was found to be 3.51%. The resulted data indicated that concentrations of Se in all types of water samples were below the permissible limit recommended by WHO.

Abstract:The paper presents a new analytical procedure for the determination and speciation of trace and ultratrace selenium in water, beverages, seafood, milk, and vegetables. The developed method is based on the dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with the use of new thiosemicarbazide-incorporated graphene as a solid sorbent, in combination of the total-reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (TXRF). As a result, we have created an auspicious analytical tool for fast and sensitive analysis of samples with a complex matrix. Regardless of the specimen type, the method is characterized by a very low detection limit of 1.7 pg mL-1 and high precision. The developed strategy allowed us to solve common problems associated with selenium loss during the sample preparation for the TXRF measurement and also improve its performance toward the analysis of beverages and high saline/solid samples, which may even be impossible to perform using standard sample preparation procedures for a TXRF measurement.

Abstract:A rapid and novel two-step dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction and dispersive micro-solid phase extraction method was established for the separation and enrichment of trace cadmium, nickel, and copper in food and environmental water prior to determination by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In the first microextraction step, carbon tetrachloride was employed to extract metal-diethyldithiocarbamate chelates from aqueous solution with ultrasound. In the following step, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were added and used to collect the analytes in the organic solvent. The sample pH, type and volume of extraction solvent, mass of magnetic nanoparticles, concentration of the chelating agent, concentration of sodium chloride, and sonication time were optimized. The linear dynamic range was from 0.01 to 20 micrograms per liter with correlation coefficients between 0.9990 and 0.9992. Enrichment factors were 78, 79, and 81 for cadmium, nickel, and copper, respectively. The limits of detection for cadmium, nickel, and copper were 0.007, 0.009, and 0.017 micrograms per liter, with relative standard deviations from 1.1 to 2.6 percent. The developed method was validated by the determination of cadmium, nickel, and copper in rice and mussel certified reference materials, food, and environmental water with satisfactory results.

Abstract:In the current study, we have developed a green water switchable liquid–liquid microextraction method for separation, preconcentration, and estimation of selenium concentration in the real samples. First time introducing the water switchable liquid–liquid microextraction method to determine the trace level selenium in different food and soft drink samples. Water switchable medium was formed by the reaction of diethylenetriamine base when exposed to uniformed pressure of carbon dioxide. After being exposed to carbon dioxide, water switchable medium reversibly exchanges in two separated aqueous and organic phases. Advantages of carbon dioxide uses are cheap, environmental friendly, non-accumulation, removable, and require the opaque materials for operating container. Water switchable phenomena occurred easily from low polarity to high polarity organic solvent. Experimental variables of the water switchable liquid–liquid microextraction (LLME) method were optimized into its optimum values such as pressure, pH, centrifugation speed, extraction time, and concentration of complexing agent. The certified reference material of Canada Lake Water (TMDA-53.3) and CS-M-3 Mushroom (Boletus edulis) was used for validation of the present water switchable LLME method. Enhancement factor and limit of detection were obtained 85.5 and 0.018 μg kg−1, respectively. Developed green water switchable LLME method was successfully applied for assessment of total selenium in tomato, pumpkin seed, mushroom, garlic, rice, pistachio, chickpea, hazelnut, walnut, apple juice, and ice tea samples.

Abstract:Functionalized adsorbents with poly-(4,9-dioxododecane-1,12-guanidine) (SiO2-PDDG) and mercaptophenyl groups (MPhS) were used for the separation of Se(VI) and Se(IV) for the first time. Fixation of PDDG was characterized by capillary electrophoresis and TGA/DSC. The quantitative extraction of Se(VI) proceeded due to anion exchange at pH 3-7. The adsorption capacity of SiO2-PDDG for Se(VI) was 28 μmol g-1. Silicas with mercaptophenyl groups were used for the extraction of Se(IV) from solutions in the range of 2 M HCl - pH 6.5. The adsorption capacity of MPhS was 35 μmol g-1. A system of columns containing synthesized adsorbents was proposed for the separation of Se(VI) and Se(IV) and their subsequent determination by ICP-MS. Optimal parameters of adsorption include a flow rate of 1 mL min-1, pH of 5, and sample volume of 200 mL. Se(IV) was desorbed with 5 mL of 0.25 M 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulphonic acid and Se(VI) with 5 mL of 1 M HNO3. The preconcentration factor was 40. The limits of detection (3s) were 0.75 and 1.25 ng L-1 for Se(VI) and Se(IV), respectively. The proposed method (SPE-ICPMS) was used to determine selenium species in natural water and certified reference materials. The separation was carried out directly at the sampling site.

Abstract:Abstract Reconstruction following ear trauma presents a heterogeneous group of abnormalities with significantly more variation in presentation. The aim of the study was to analyze our experience and expound some broad principles of auricular reconstruction in acquired ear deformities. A total of 117 patients with human, animal bites and revision otoplasty presented to our clinic. Demographic data were extracted from medical records and photographs. Management options included no reconstruction, external silicone prosthesis, or autologous reconstruction. Fifty percent of patients with human bite injuries and 62% with animal bite injuries opted for autologous ear reconstruction. A flap with either a costal cartilage framework (37/39; 95%) or conchal cartilage (2/39; 5%) was used. In revision otoplasty group, 12% required autologous reconstruction either with conchal or costal cartilage. We discuss our indications, techniques, complications, and predictable pattern of injuries in human bites. Autologous auricular reconstruction of traumatic injuries is a safe procedure associated with aesthetically pleasing outcome and improved quality of life despite physical and psychosocial comorbidities. Elderly patients are more likely to opt for prosthetic camouflage.
Simultaneous Enrichment of Inorganic and Organic Species of Lead and Mercury in Pg L−1 Levels by Solid Phase Extraction Online Combined with High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Quantification of ultra-trace inorganic and organic species of lead and mercury in unpolluted environmental water is crucial to estimate the mobility, toxicity and bioavailability and interactions. Simultaneous pre-concentration of Pb and Hg species in pg L-1 levels followed by multi-elemental speciation analysis makes great sense to a large set of unstable samples because of time advantages. Herein simultaneous enrichment and speciation analysis of ultra-trace lead and mercury in water was developed by online solid-phase extraction coupled with high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SPE-HPLC-ICP-MS) for this aim. Pb(II), trimethyl lead (TML), triethyl lead (TEL), Hg(II), methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg) were baseline separated in 11 min under gradient elution using 5 mM L-cysteine (Cys) at pH 2.5 in the 0-1 and 4-15 min and 5 mM Cys + 0.5 mM tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide solution at pH 2.5 in the 1-4 min. Lead and mercury species in 10 mL intact water samples were adsorbed on a 1 cm C18 enrichment column preconditioned with 10 mL of 1 mM 2-mercaptoethanol at 10 mL min-1, and then directly desorbed by the mobile phases. High enrichment factors (459 for Pb(II), 1248 for TML, 1627 for TEL, 2485 for Hg(II), 1984 for MeHg and 1866 for EtHg) were obtained with good relative standard deviations (<5%), leading to low LODs (0.001-0.011 ng L-1) and LOQs (0.004-0.036 ng L-1). Good accuracy of this method was validated by two certified reference materials of total lead in water (GBW08601) and total mercury in water (GBW08603) along with spiked recoveries (89-93%). The method was applied to analyze trace lead and mercury species in river, lake, tap and rain water, and purified and mineral water. Inorganic lead of 13-68 ng L-1 and inorganic mercury of 21-49 ng L-1 were measured in the nine water samples whereas TML, TEL and MeHg were not detected with 2-5 ng L-1 EtHg presented only in one river water and tap water. Selective Determination of Selenium in Garlic, Mushroom and Water Samples by Chemically Modified Mesoporous Silica Solid Phase Coupled with ICP-OES

Abstract:A selective sorbent for solid phase extraction (SPE), based on a chemically modified mesoporous silica (SBA-15), followed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry was used for extraction, preconcentration, and determination of selenium in water and food samples. The main parameters of SPE including pH, amount of mesoporous (solid phase), concentration of the eluent (desorption solvent), and equilibrium time were optimized by using a fractional central composite design (f-CCD). The optimum conditions were found to be 3.2 for pH, 21 mg for amount of the mesoporous, 1 mol l−1 for eluent concentration, and 9 min for equilibrium time. Under the optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) was 2.56 μg l−1. The linear dynamic range (LDR) was 5–1,000 μg l−1 with determination coefficient (R2) of 0.999. Relative standard deviation (C = 400 μg l−1, n = 5) was 3.84 %. The enrichment factor was 20. The maximum sorption capacity of the modified SBA-15 was 15 mg g−1. The sorbent presented good stability, reusability, high adsorption capacity, and fast rate of equilibrium for sorption/desorption of selenium (IV) ions.

Abstract:This paper presents a new method for the simultaneous speciation analysis of arsenic (As(III)-arsenite, As(V)-arsenate, DMA-dimethylarsinic acid, MMA-methylarsonic acid, and AsB-arsenobetaine) and selenium (Se(IV)-selenite, Se(VI)-selenate, Se-Methionine, and Se-Cystine), which was applied to a variety of seafood and onion samples. The determination of the forms of arsenic and selenium was undertaken using the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (HPLC–ICP–MS) analytical technique. The separation of both organic and inorganic forms of arsenic and selenium was performed using two analytical columns: an anion exchange column, Dionex IonPac AS22, containing an alkanol quaternary ammonium ion, and a double bed cation–anion exchange guard column, Dionex Ion Pac CG5A, containing, as a first layer, fully sulfonated latex for cation exchange and a fully aminated layer for anion exchange as the second layer. The ammonium nitrate, at pH = 9.0, was used as a mobile phase. The method presented here allowed us to separate the As and Se species within 10 min with a suitable resolution. The applicability was presented with different sample matrix types: seafood and onion.

Abstract:A hyphenated method for mercury speciation analysis by the coupling of high performance liquid chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with the online strong anion exchange column (SAX) preconcentration was developed. The Hg analytes (Hg(+), MeHg, EtHg and Hg(2+)) were absorbed on the SAX column preconditioned with sodium 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate, and then rapidly eluted (less than 16s) by 5μL 3% (v/v) 2-mercaptoethanol. The enrichment factors of 1025 for Hg(+), 1084 for MeHg, 1108 for EtHg and 1046 for Hg(2+) were obtained using 6mL sample in a 1.5-min enrichment procedure. Rapid separation of the four mercurial compounds was achieved within 5min on a 50-mm C18 column using 0.5% (v/v) 2-mercaptoethanol as the mobile phase. The detection limits for Hg(+), MeHg, EtHg and Hg(2+) were 0.015, 0.010, 0.009 and 0.016ng L(-1), each, and the relative standard deviations of peak height and peak area (5ng L(-1) for each Hg species) were all below 5%. Mercury speciation in three freshwater, two drinking water and two seawater samples were then analyzed by the proposed method. MeHg and Hg(2+) concentrations down to 0.14 and 0.56ng L(-1) were detected in the drinking waters.

Abstract:Toxicity, mobility, bioavailability and biofunctions of chromium, cadmium, mercury and lead are heavily dependent upon their specific chemical forms, leading to a high demand to metal speciation analysis rather than total quantification. Simultaneous speciation analysis of multiple metal(loid)s is attractive to a large sample capacity containing unstable analytes due to its economic and environmental advantages over the conventional single elemental strategies. In this work, an analytical method integrating online solid phase extraction into high performance liquid chromatography interfaced with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to simultaneously preconcentrate and quantify Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb forms in pg L-1 levels in water was developed. Cr (III + VI), Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II), methylmercury (MeHg), ethylmercury (EtHg), and trimethyl (TML) and triethyl lead (TEL) were captured by the C18 adsorbent (equilibrated with 10 mL of 1.0 mM 2-hydroxyethanethiol at 10 mL min-1) and eluted by mobile phase (5.0 mM Cys at pH 2.0), then completely separated on the C18 column within 8.0 min and eventually determined by ICP-MS. Low limits of detection (0.001-0.007 ng L-1) and quantification (0.003-0.023 ng L-1), good relative standard deviations (<4%) and high enrichment factors (827-2656 folds) were obtained with good linearities. Three reference materials of total cadmium (GBW08602), total mercury (GBW08603) and total lead (GBW08601) in water were analyzed by the developed method to validate the accuracy with good agreement with certified values and satisfactory recoveries (92-100%). This method was proved feasible by the determination of Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb compounds in drinking water, river water, pond water and tap water.

Abstract:The role of calcium ions in the process by which nutrients affect glucagon secretion by pancreatic islet α-cells remains the matter of an apparently endless debate. In the prolongation of recent articles dealing with this matter, the present review draws attention to the dual role of Ca2+ as revealed by prior publications. In such a perspective, emphasis is placed on the increase in glucagon output in response to the omission of extracellular Ca2+ as recorded in the presence of D-glucose or 2-ketoisocaproate, the permissive role of extracellular Ca2+ in the positive secretory response to arginine or a mixture of fumarate, glutamate and pyruvate, and the effects of an organic calcium-antagonist on glucagon output. Considering the role currently ascribed to Ca2+ in the activation of motile events involved in stimulus-secretion coupling, attention is also given to the effects of cytochalasin B, D2O and mitotic-spindle inhibitors upon the secretory response of α-cells exposed to D-glucose in the absence or presence of arginine.

Abstract:In this work, a 2,3-diaminonaphthalene post-synthetic modified magnetic metal–organic framework was fabricated for fast and selective determination of inorganic selenium in real food and water samples. The results exhibited that selenium (IV) is adsorbed by the nano-material at a pH of 2.5, and in this way, selenium (IV) can be quantified selectively. After identifying the nanosorbent with FT-IR, CHNS, XRD, SEM, TEM, VSM, and BET surface analysis, parameters affecting the retention and desorption were optimized. Under optimal conditions, the detection limit of 8 ng/L was achieved for selenium (IV), and the method's precisions were less than 12.5 % intra-day RSD% and < 14.4 % for inter-day RSD%. The highest adsorption capacity was obtained as 264 mg/g. Finally, the desired adsorbent was used to extract and determine selenium species in water samples and total selenium in food samples. One of the most important advantages of the present method is its speed, ease, time-saving, and high accuracy.

Abstract:Sepabeads SP70 resin was impregnated with ionic liquid (BMIMPF6) was used for micro-solid phase extraction of lead(II) prior to its microsampling flame atomic absorption spectrometric determination. The optimum values of experimental parameters such as adsorbent amount, ligand amount, pH, eluent type and concentration, eluent volume, sample volume on recovery of lead were optimized as 5.0 mg, 0.15 mg, 7, HCl, 2 M, 0.4 mL, 50 mL, respectively. The analytical data of the method under optimal condition are as follows; limit of detection (LOD) (3 s/m, N: 10): 0.21 μg L−1, limit of quantification (LOQ) (10 s/m, N: 10): 0.69 μg L−1, preconcentration factor (PF): 125, and relative standard deviation (RSD%): 1.43%. The accuracy of the developed method was checked by addition-recovery tests to real samples and analysis of certified reference materials (Environment Canada TMDA-53.3 (fortified water) and 1570a trace elements in spinach leaves). The recovery values of these analyses are in the range of 90–98%. The method was successfully applied to determination of lead level of food and water samples.
