339 Gender Concordance and Publication Productivity Within Neurosurgical Focus: A Ten-Year Review

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: The “glass ceiling” phenomenon describes how female representation in leadership positions has remained stagnant despite an increase in the number of trainees. Mentorship from female role models has been hypothesized to influence academic productivity. To our knowledge, trends in gender representation among editorial boards of neurosurgical journals remain undescribed. Neurosurgical Focus publishes monthly issues which are peer-reviewed by an invited group of topic editors based on their expertise in the field. METHODS: Publicly available data were collected from the Journal of Neurosurgery: Focus website from January 2013 to December 2022. Themes were dichotomized into technical or non-technical themes. Female gender concordant publications were defined as publications having females in both first and senior authorship. Gender was assessed using pronouns based on authors’ university profile and an artificial intelligence platform in case of ambiguity. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using Chi-squared and Fisher’s exact test. RESULTS: The number of female editors and gender concordant authors increased over time (P < 0.05). Women accounted for =50% of the editorial board on non-technical themes relevant to education and gender diversity. Having a female senior author was associated with higher publication productivity for original research and review articles among female authors (OR = 13.73, 95% CI = 1.74-394.31, P < 0.05). The odds of having female gender concordant publications were higher with a female editor (OR = 4.05, 95% CI= 1.38-12.92, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Mentorship and representation among editorial boards play a crucial role in enhancing academic productivity among women. This paper provides evidence that Neurosurgical Focus increased female gender concordant publications by increasing female editors over time because of their efforts to increase female representation. Initiatives to increase female representation and mentorship will help overcome the glass ceiling phenomenon.

Abstract:With the increasing number of female senior executives, the relationship between female senior executives and corporate innovation behaviors has attracted widespread attention, but few works have studied the influences of female CEOs on innovation behaviors and their mechanisms. This paper studies the relationship between CEO’s gender and the selection of corporate innovation behaviors, as well as the regulating effect of gender culture on the relationship between them. It was discovered in the studies that (1) if compared with male CEOs, female CEOs have significantly promoted both incremental innovation behaviors and radical innovation behaviors; (2) gender culture has positively regulated the relationship between CEO’s gender and corporate incremental innovation behaviors, yet the regulating effect of gender culture on the relationship between CEO’s gender and corporate radical innovation behaviors is not significant. Thus, the government needs to further foster a gender culture with gender equality, and actively promote the positive effect of female CEOs in corporate innovations.

Abstract:Despite the recent movements for female equality and empowerment, few women occupy top positions in scientific decision-making. The challenges women face during their career may arise from societal biases and the current scientific culture. We discuss the effect of such biases at three different levels of the career and provide suggestions to tackle them. At the societal level, gender roles can create a negative feedback loop in which women are discouraged from attaining top positions and men are discouraged from choosing a home-centred lifestyle. This loop can be broken early in life by providing children with female role models that have a work-centred life and opening up the discussion about gender roles at a young age. At the level of hiring, unconscious biases can lead to a preference for male candidates. The introduction of (unbiased) artificial intelligence algorithms and gender champions in the hiring process may restore the balance and give men and women an equal chance. At the level of coaching and evaluation, barriers that women face should be addressed on a personal level through the introduction of coaching and mentoring programmes. In addition, women may play a pivotal role in shifting the perception of scientific success away from bibliometric outcomes only towards a more diverse assessment of quality and societal relevance. Taken together, these suggestions may break the glass ceiling in the scientific world for women; create more gender diversity at the top and improve translational science in medicine.

Flexibility and Fairness: Effects of the Network Form of Organization on Gender Equity in Life Science Careers

Abstract:Why do women have more opportunities in some employment settings? I investigate how organizational form affects gender stratification among life scientists. I propose that firms governed by networks, rather than bureaucracies, allow for greater equity. Hierarchy and rules hide gender bias, while reliance on ties outside the organization provides transparency and flexibility. I analyze the careers of 2,062 U.S. life scientists and interviews with 41 scientists. I examine employment data by gender for two patterns: early entrance into the biotechnology industry and promotion within network and hierarchical organizations. Gender does not affect when a scientist enters the biotech industry but is related to promotion. Men are more likely to attain early supervisory-level positions across organizational settings. Female scientists are nearly eight times more likely to supervise in biotech firms than in more hierarchical settings. The two organizational forms—network and hierarchy—provide different employment experiences for female scientists.

Breaking through the glass ceiling: an industrial perspective

Abstract:Many companies have recognized that the workforce of the future will be significantly more diverse than in the past. A substantial number of these new employees will be women. Industry must create an environment that attracts the best, brightest, and most talented women and provide an environment that empowers them to reach their full potential. Barriers to advancement, such as the real or perceived "glass ceiling," inhibit the individual and ultimately negatively affect the company. Successful companies will recognize that gender diversity is a critical business strategy and implement aggressive programs to assist women in breaking through the glass ceiling. Gender diversity initiatives should include examination of quality of life issues, training and development, organizational policies and practices, and management accountability. Mentoring programs clearly play an important role in gender diversity programs. Personal mentoring experiences in academic and corporate environments, as well as a pilot mentoring program at Land O'Lakes, will be discussed.

Abstract:Japan is now at a major historical turning point with its shrinking population. While conventional wisdom is no longer applicable, we have an excellent opportunity for a new social transformation. Promoting diversity is an effective way to achieve this, but this requires recognition of the intergenerational gap in diversity. The medical community has its own unique problems, but also broader problems shared with other fields. In medicine specifically, there is an urgent need to improve the working environment of physicians and realize sustainable medicine and patient-centered care. To solve these problems, reforms are needed that encompass not only the medical community, but also the entire citizenry as patients. More broadly, the main issue is the promotion and development of women leaders. We must refer to examples in Europe and the United States, and implement reforms in work styles. The medical community, which solves the essential problem of maintaining and improving human health, is well positioned to create a new society that coexists with artificial intelligence based on scientific evidence to ensure a bright future beyond this historical turning point.
Role of female leadership in corporate innovation: a systematic literature review

Abstract:Purpose This study aims to explore how female leadership contributes to corporate innovation through a systematic literature review. The authors provide a framework based on empirical studies to provide a broader perspective of corporate innovation based on female leadership. Design/methodology/approach To understand the most recent developments in leadership, a thorough literature study is carried out to discover the antecedents of women's leadership and their contribution to corporate innovation, with an emphasis on literature published between 2013 and 2022. An intensive research plan was developed, and 1,120 outcomes were obtained. Finally, 35 studies met the criteria for inclusion in the study. A comprehensive and systematic approach is followed, with the goal of not just summarizing current empirical studies on the subject, but also including an aspect of analytical critique besides organizational policies. Findings The findings show that organizations with female chief executive officers (CEOs) are more likely to innovate. When female CEOs come on board, organizations are more likely to engage in creative activities. Research also reveals that female CEOs who head organizations are more likely to engage in new and creative business practices that are environment friendly. Moreover, developing nations are encouraged to accelerate the adoption of structural transformation initiatives that would provide women with access to information and technologies. Research limitations/implications This research is limited to literature published between 2013 and 2022. Practical implications It is important to select the organizational response to board female representation institutional logic to reflect the intended sort of performance. Organizational stakeholders were unfavorable to female leadership, implying that such perceptions harm women but benefit men. Prior research emphasizes distinctions in leadership effectiveness between males and females, diverting attention elsewhere from examining the reasons that generate differences among executives in organizations. For policymakers to promote more women in top positions based on female knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs), they need to understand how firms deviate from traditional standards. In addition, it is crucial to pay attention to how male and female leaders are supported by their followers. Social implications This research offers organizations a holistic view regarding female leadership and helps them understand their contribution in innovation. Originality/value In modern, dynamic and technological landscapes, female participation is one of the key aspects that corporates consider to sustain and drive growth. That is why, modern societies without women's contribution to economic growth and innovation are deemed incomplete. The current study highlights their contribution to the economy. Literature also indicates that the presence of female leadership on boards impacts corporate innovation, as well as financial performance and contextual factors.c

Abstract:The world of biotechnology "start-ups" and entrepreneurship offers exciting new avenues for driving state-of-the-art research using an arsenal of multidisciplinary skills, whether your role is as part of a team or as a leader. Although traditionally these positions may not be as secure as those offered by some of the larger companies, the small start-up culture provides opportunities for contributing at many levels to a wide range of responsibilities: from scientific discovery to delivery of proof of concept and intellectual property; from analysis of market opportunities and competitive intelligence to creation of time lines and business plans for a first product. Often, if you get in on the ground level, you get to validate your own concept, pitch to potential investors, argue value, build a team, engage advisors, and then, with funding in hand, launch an entirely new research and development (R&D) enterprise. Many of the skills and much of the experience gained while pursuing a graduate degree can be put to good use in these arenas as well. This path, however, is not for the faint of heart; it requires not only a strong scientific background and organizational skills, but also the ability to work well on a team, excellent communication skills, and persistence when faced with delays or disappointment. With increasing responsibilities in the small company come the requirements for aptitudes for leadership, strategic and financial planning, networking, negotiating, and managing both projects and personnel.

Abstract:Bringing our collective experiences of past collaborations through a virtual connection, we created an international research team of 16 multidiscipline, multicultural, and multilingual academic women called “COVID GAP” (Gendered Academic Productivity) to explore the ongoing challenges and effects of COVID-19. Identifying as insider researchers, we engaged in a two-phase, primarily qualitative research project to better understand the lived experiences of academics during the pandemic. Our past individual experiences with cooperative research informed our roles and responsibilities and how we organized and communicated. This article is a reflection of how COVID GAP has refined our collaborative process in response to an evolving comprehension of our own lessons learned including understanding the nature of cooperative research and that it takes time and effort. From our experience, we provide specific recommendations for group collaborations emphasizing the need to identify a team coordinator to organize efforts, the establishment of a safe and equitable working environment for all involved, and the explicit attention to building a network for research partnerships.

Abstract:Scientific collaboration in almost every discipline is mainly driven by the need of sharing knowledge, expertise, and pooled resources. Science is becoming more complex which has encouraged scientists to involve more in collaborative research projects in order to better address the challenges. As a highly interdisciplinary field with a rapidly evolving scientific landscape, artificial intelligence calls for researchers with special profiles covering a diverse set of skills and expertise. Understanding gender aspects of scientific collaboration is of paramount importance, especially in a field such as artificial intelligence that has been attracting large investments. Using social network analysis, natural language processing, and machine learning and focusing on artificial intelligence publications for the period from 2000 to 2019, in this work, we comprehensively investigated the effects of several driving factors on acquiring key positions in scientific collaboration networks through a gender lens. It was found that, regardless of gender, scientific performance in terms of quantity and impact plays a crucial in possessing the "social researcher" in the network. However, subtle differences were observed between female and male researchers in acquiring the "local influencer" role.

Abstract:Improving the status of women in radiology is crucial to better work environments. There is strong evidence in the business world that women leaders improve the workplace by making it more financially viable and by increasing collaboration, job satisfaction, and engagement. Diverse leadership fosters innovation, and women approach problem-solving with unique insights and collaborative styles. Gender diversity in leadership correlates with improved patient outcomes because women leaders prioritize patient-centered care and communication. Women create sustainable, productive work and improve radiology. Women serve as powerful role models, inspiring the next generation of women in radiology and addressing gender disparities. Increasing women leaders in radiology is essential to increase the number of women in radiology. This article summarizes many challenges women face when taking leadership roles: organizational biases prioritizing male viewpoints and marginalizing women's voices and contributions, a lack of role models, a lack of time ("second shift"), a lack of confidence, a lack of interest or perceived benefit, a lack of support, burnout, and previous poor experiences. While systemic issues are difficult to overcome, this article assists in the training and development of women radiologists by offering strategies to enhance job satisfaction and bring new and valuable perspectives to leadership.

Abstract:Underrepresentation is widespread in the software industry, resulting in problems for society, companies, and individuals. People in the technology industry who belong to underrepresented groups are using six capabilities to develop and harness their potential: perseverance, learning, work experience, communication, curiosity, and empathy. However, individual effort cannot be expected to compensate for systemic barriers, and organizations need to improve efforts to create environments where people of various backgrounds can thrive. Three ways in which organizations and individuals interested in improving representation can act are by supporting networking, cultivating inclusive leadership, and promoting the development of self-efficacy.

From female surgical resident to academic leaders: challenges and pathways forward

Abstract:Despite an increasing number of female surgeons it is still very difficult for them to get into high rank positions. What are the obstacles for women to achieve a professional level where they can lead teams, departments or organisations or be invited as speakers in meetings or for editorial comments? Besides the general attitude still existing in many societies that women are responsible for child care there is a clear difference in self-presentation of women compared to their male counterparts. Women tend to underestimate their competence and skills whereas (often male) decision makers expect candidates to present themselves in a rather self-confident way. This unrecognized bias and the "glass ceiling" are encountered by many women in their career. Prestigious activities like publishing papers, presenting at conferences or working in committees are predominantly searched for by male colleagues whereas it is not uncommon for women to be confined to tasks in clinical workflow. Another bias is calling women by their first names instead of their full names, professional titles and achievements. Women should always introduce themselves by full name. Mentoring is a helpful career tool for female surgeons. A mentor can assist a mentee with strategic planning and help to redefine her way especially after a setback. When she clearly communicates her needs and expectations to seniors it shows her ambition and willingness to advance her career. Finding sponsorship is even more beneficial as a sponsor can use his influence to promote a woman to a high rank position. Surgical women´s associations exist worldwide. They enable young professionals to get in contact to female leaders/role models and exchange views with female colleagues. Institutional programs for (gender) equity are installed in some places to facilitate scientific and professional career advancement. Women are as capable as men although it is a greater challenge.

PLOS's vision has always focused on open science and community engagement, and as the first "community journal" in the portfolio, PLOS Genetics has been at the forefront of this pioneering approach. As we step into our new roles as Editors-in-Chief, we would like to reflect on these aspirations and share some initial thoughts on how we hope to build on these important values in the years ahead.
