Abstract:The effect of electric current on microbial community is explored in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) simultaneously treating sulfide and nitrate. The MFCs are operated under four different conditions which exhibited different characteristics of electricity generation. In batch mode, MFCs generate intermittently high current pulses in the beginning, and the current density is instable subsequently, while the current density of MFCs in continuous mode is relatively stable. All operational parameters show good capacity for substrate removal, and nitrogen and sulfate were the main reaction products. Polymerase Chain Reaction-Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analysis is employed to obtain profiles of the bacterial communities present in inoculum and suspension of four MFCs. Based on the community diversity indices and Spearman correlation analyses, significant correlation exists between Richness of the community of anode chamber and the electricity generated, while no strong correlation is evident between other indexes (Shannon index, Simpson index and Equitability index) and the electricity. Additionally, the results of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) suggest that MFCs suffering from current shock have similar suspension communities, while the others have diverse microbial communities.
Intermittent Contact of Fluidized Anode Particles Containing Exoelectrogenic Biofilms for Continuous Power Generation in Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Current generation in a microbial fuel cell can be limited by the amount of anode surface area available for biofilm formation, and slow substrate degradation kinetics. Increasing the anode surface area can increase the amount of biofilm, but performance will improve only if the anode material is located near the cathode to minimize solution internal resistance. Here we demonstrate that biofilms do not have to be in constant contact with the anode to produce current in an MFC. Granular activated carbon particles enriched with exoelectrogenic biofilm are fluidized (by stirring) in the anode chamber of the MFC, resulting in only intermittent contact between the particles and the anode current collector. The maximum power density generated is 951 +/- 10 mW m(-2), compared to 813 +/- 2 mW m(-2) for the control; without stirring (packed bed), and 525 +/- 1 mW m(-2) in the absence of GAC particles and without stirring. GAC-biofilm particles demonstrate capacitor-like behavior, but achieve nearly constant discharge conditions due to the large number of particles that contact the current collector. These results provide proof of concept for the development of flowable electrode reactors, where anode biofilms can be electrically charged in a separate storage tank and then rapidly discharged in compact anode chambers. Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are considered promising energy sources whereby chemical energy is converted into electricity via bioelectrochemical reactions utilizing microorganisms. Several factors affect MFC performance, including cathodic reduction of oxygen, electrode materials, cell internal and external resistances, and cell design. This work describes the effect of the catalyst coating in the air-cathode membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for a microbial fuel cell (MFC) prepared via electrodeposition of manganese oxide. The characterization of the synthesized air-cathode MFC, operating in a continuous mode, was made via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses for the determination of the intrinsic properties of the electrode that are crucial for scalability purposes. EIS analysis of the MFCs and of the MEA reveals that the anode and cathode contribute to polarization resistance by about 85% and 15%, respectively, confirming the high catalytic activity of the Mn-based air cathode. The maximum power density of the Mn-based cathode is about 20% higher than that recorded using a Pt/C electrode.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFC) have attracted the attention of scientists due to their capacity to improve electricity production and to employ wastewater as substrate. This duality results in a source of clean energy and degradation of the organic matter. The use of catalysts such as platinum make the implementation of these technologies difficult, therefore, it is a challenge to find economically feasible options and strategies carry out studies. Stream sediments (SS) and anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) were compared in a single chamber-MFC. Reactors constructed with Plexiglas contained carbon cloth cathode treated with polystyrene, graphite felt anode, and acetate as substrates. The voltage was measured with a digital multimeter, whereas power density and Coulombic efficiency were calculated based on Ohm's law. The electrochemistry impedance spectroscopy analysis was determined with an equivalent circuit model resistances. AGS-MFC produced 1.35 mW/m 2 and 30 mA/m 2 , while SS-MFC produced 1.25 mW/m 2 and 20 mA/m 2 of power density and current density, respectively. AGS-MFC showed a 10% greater Coulombic efficiency compared to the one obtained from the SS-MFC. In this research, the effect of the inoculum on power density in an MFC was evaluated with the objective of finding sources of microorganisms with better capacities for electricity production and organic matter degradation. The equivalent circuit model showed that AGS-MFC obtained the lowest charge transfer resistance value and the highest constant phase elements values. AGS was the inoculum that showed the best performance in the MFC in terms of voltage and power density.

Initial development and structure of biofilms on microbial fuel cell anodes

Abstract:Background: Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) rely on electrochemically active bacteria to capture the chemical energy contained in organics and convert it to electrical energy. Bacteria develop biofilms on the MFC electrodes, allowing considerable conversion capacity and opportunities for extracellular electron transfer (EET). The present knowledge on EET is centred around two Gram-negative models, i.e. Shewanella and Geobacter species, as it is believed that Gram-positives cannot perform EET by themselves as the Gram-negatives can. To understand how bacteria form biofilms within MFCs and how their development, structure and viability affects electron transfer, we performed pure and co-culture experiments. Results: Biofilm viability was maintained highest nearer the anode during closed circuit operation (current flowing), in contrast to when the anode was in open circuit (soluble electron acceptor) where viability was highest on top of the biofilm, furthest from the anode. Closed circuit anode Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms were considerably thinner compared to the open circuit anode (30 +/- 3 microm and 42 +/- 3 microm respectively), which is likely due to the higher energetic gain of soluble electron acceptors used. The two Gram-positive bacteria used only provided a fraction of current produced by the Gram-negative organisms. Power output of co-cultures Gram-positive Enterococcus faecium and either Gram-negative organisms, increased by 30-70% relative to the single cultures. Over time the co-culture biofilms segregated, in particular, Pseudomonas aeruginosa creating towers piercing through a thin, uniform layer of Enterococcus faecium. P. aeruginosa and E. faecium together generated a current of 1.8 +/- 0.4 mA while alone they produced 0.9 +/- 0.01 and 0.2 +/- 0.05 mA respectively. Conclusion: We postulate that this segregation may be an essential difference in strategy for electron transfer and substrate capture between the Gram-negative and the Gram-positive bacteria used here.
Influence of Soluble Microbial Products on the Long-Term Stability of Air Cathodes in Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:The practical application of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is currently restricted by the poor long-term stability of air cathodes, which has proven closely related to the inevitable biofilm growth on catalyst layer. However, the mechanisms how the biofilm inhibits the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remain controversial. This work examined the possible role of soluble microbial products (SMP) of cathode biofilm in fouling of air cathodes. The cathode biofilm SMP were found to primarily consist of polysaccharides, proteins and some humic-like substances. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and molecular size analyses revealed that the SMP could diffuse into the catalyst layer during MFC operation. Removing SMP from the catalyst layer by chemical cleaning reduced the ohmic resistance (R-ohm), charge transfer resistance (R-ct) and diffusion resistance (R-d) by 5.3%, 33.3% and 27.7% respectively after 6 months of operation. As a result, the maximum power density of MFCs was increased by 10.2% from 965.1 +/- 45.1 mWm(-2) to 1063.1 +/- 29.5 mW m(-2). Impregnating simulated SMP into the catalyst layer increased R-ohm, R-ct and R-d by 16.8%, 63.6% and 76.2% respectively, resulting in an obvious reduction in the ORR current. These results demonstrated that cathode biofilm SMP are an important factor reducing the long-term stability of air cathodes and thus MFCs, which will be valuable for promoting the practicability of MFCs. Continuous Flowing Membraneless Microbial Fuel Cells with Separated Electrode Chambers

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an emerging technology in the energy and environment field. Its application is limited due to its high cost caused by the utilization of membranes and noble metal catalysts. In this paper, a membraneless MFC, with separated electrode chambers, was designed. The two separated chambers are connected via a channel and the continuous electrolyte flow from anode to cathode drives proton transfer. The proton mass transfer coefficiency in this MFC is 0.9086cm/s, which is higher than reported MFCs with membranes, such as J-cloth and glass fiber. The maximum output voltage is 160.7mV, with 1000Ω resistor. Its peak power density is 24.33mW/m3. SCOD removal efficiency can reach 90.45% via this MFC. If the connection between the two electrode chambers is blocked, the performance of MFC will decrease severely. All the above results prove the feasibility and advantages of this special MFC model.
Electricity Generation from Organic Wastewater Using a Continuous-Flow Single Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell

Abstract:A continuous Single Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell (SC-MFC) was investigated systemically in this study. When fed by synthetic wastewater, with a 400mg/l COD concentration the maximum power density of the MFC was 71.5mW/m2 (at 0.8 A/m2). With a NaCl concentration of 0.1M put into the influent, it increased from 42.0 mW/m2 (at 0.25 A/m2) to 141.7mW/m2 (at 1.1A/m2), and the internal resistance also decreased significantly from 300Ω to 77Ω. The optimal operation temperature was 30oC, with a power density of 140.7mW/m2 (at 1.0 A/m2). When fed by starch processing wastewater, the average power density of the MFC was 100mW/m2, while fed by the effluent from an anaerobic reactor treating the starch wastewater; it was 90mW/m2. Different substrates resulted in significant influence on microbial community on the anode of the MFC, while the anode connected into the circuit or not did not cause obvious difference in the microbial community structure.
A Graphite-Granule Membrane-Less Tubular Air-Cathode Microbial Fuel Cell for Power Generation under Continuously Operational Conditions

Abstract:An air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an efficient and sustainable MFC configuration for recovering electrical energy from organic substances. In this paper, we developed a graphite-granule anode, tubular air-cathode MFC (GTMFC) capable of continuous electricity generation from glucose-based substrates. This GTMFC produced a maximum volumetric power of 50.2Wm−3 at current density of 216Am−3 (REX=22Ω). Electrochemistry impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements demonstrated an overall internal resistance of 27Ω, consisting of ohmic resistance of Rohm=13.8Ω (51.1%), a charge-transfer resistance of Rc=6.1Ω (22.6%) and a diffusion resistance of Rd=7.2Ω (26.3%). Power generation with respect to initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration was described well by an exponential saturation model. Recirculation was to found to have a significant effect on electrochemical performance at low COD concentrations, while such effect was absent at high COD concentrations. This study suggests a feasible and simple method to reduce internal resistance and improve power generation of sustainable air-cathode MFCs.
Cathodic Biofouling Control by Microbial Separators in Air-Breathing Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) incorporating air-breathing cathodes have emerged as a promising ecofriendly wastewater treatment technology capable of operating on an energy-free basis. However, the inevitable biofouling of these devices rapidly decreases cathodic catalytic activity and also reduces the stability of MFCs during long-term operation. The present work developed a novel microbial separator for use in air-breathing MFCs that protects cathodic catalytic activity. In these modified devices, microbes preferentially grow on the microbial separator rather than the cathodic surface such that biofouling is prevented. Trials showed that this concept provided low charge transfer and mass diffusion resistance values during the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction of 4.6 +/- 1.3 and 17.3 +/- 6.8 U, respectively, after prolonged operation. The maximum power density was found to be stable at 1.06 +/- 0.07 W m-2 throughout a long-term test and the chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency was increased to 92% compared with a value of 83% for MFCs exhibiting serious biofouling. In addition, a cathode combined with a microbial separator demonstrated less cross-cathode diffusion of oxygen to the anolyte. This effect indirectly induced the growth of electroactive bacteria and produced higher currents in air-breathing MFCs. Most importantly, the present microbial separator concept enhances both the lifespan and economics of air-breathing MFCs by removing the need to replace or regenerate the cathode during longterm operation. These results indicate that the installation of a microbial separator is an effective means of stabilizing power generation and ensuring the cost-effective performance of air-breathing MFCs intended for future industrial applications.(c) 2023 The Authors. Optimization of microbial fuel cell process using a novel consortium for aromatic hydrocarbon bioremediation and bioelectricity generation

Abstract:Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) is an innovative bio-electrochemical approach which converts biochemical energy inherent in wastewater into electrical energy, thus contributing to circular economy. Five electrogenic bacteria, Kocuria rosea (GTPAS76), two strains of Bacillus circulans (GTPO28 and GTPAS54), and two strains of Corynebacterium vitaeruminis (GTPO38 and GTPO42) were isolated from a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and were used individually as well as in consortium form to run double chambered "H" type microbial fuel cell. Individually they could produce voltage in the range of 0.4-0.7 V in the MFC systems. Consortium developed using GTPO28, GTPO38, GTPAS54 and GTPAS76 were capable of producing voltage output of 0.8 V with 81.81 % and 64 % COD and BOD reduction, respectively. The EPS production capacity and electricity generation by the isolated bacteria correlated significantly (r = 0.72). Various parameters like, effect of preformed biofilm, length of salt bridge and its reuse, aeration, substrate concentration and external resistance were studied in detail. The study emphasizes on improving the commercialization aspect of MFC with repeated use of salt bridge and improving wastewater treatment potential after optimization of MFC system. Polarization curve and power density trends were studied in optimized MFC. A maximum power density and current density achieved were 18.15 mW/m2 and 370.37 mA/m2, respectively using 5 mM sodium benzoate. This study reports the use of sodium benzoate as a substrate along with reusing of the salt bridge in MFC study with promising results for BOD and COD reduction, proving it to be futuristic technology for bio-based circular ecosystem development.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a kind of bioreactor for generating electricity, facilitated by exoelectrogens while treating wastewater. The present article focuses on the performance of an air cathode plexiglass MFC in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency and power output by performing two sets of experiments. The proton exchange membrane and electrode materials were Nafion 117 and carbon felts, whereas, for stable biofilm formation on the anode surface, a pure culture of Shewanella baltica 20 was used. Firstly, sterile Luria-Bertani (LB) media containing lactate, ranging from 20 to 100 mM, was continuously fed to an MFC, and a maximum power density of 55 mW/m2 was observed. Similarly, artificial wastewater with COD ranging from 3250 mg/L to 10272 mg/L was supplied to the MFC in the second set of experiments. In this case, the maximum power density and COD removal efficiency were 12 mW/m2 and 57%, respectively. In both cases, the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 1.5 h. It was found that electricity generation depends on the characteristics of the wastewater. These initial findings confirm that the design aspects of an MFC, i.e., surface area to volume ratio, and external resistance with respect to the quality of influent need to be optimised to improve the MFC's performance.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are new and growing renewable energy devices. They transform chemical products into electricity with the help of microorganisms (enzymes, bacteria, microbes, etc.) acting as biocatalysts. They are nowadays displaying technological development since they concomitant simultaneously the wastewater treatment and the electric power generation. These two novelties incite researchers in the field, the utilization of this promising technology. As a matter of fact, a bioelectrochemical fuel cell has been elaborated and set up for garden compost leachate treatment. Following a previous study on the microbial anode formed from wastewater under the application of an electric potential either positive or negative by using chronoamperometry. In this work, we propose the simple method of connecting the two electrodes (anode and cathode) by electrical resistance, to flow a current. The impact of the polarizing electric load on the achievement of the MFC has therefore been studied. Moreover, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal for the MFC running for 7 days has been also investigated. It decreased and showed simultaneously an increase in the cell voltage. Thus, the effects of the external load on the current and power generation, as well as on pollutant removal, have been studied by modifying each time the external load. The external polarizing resistance (EPR) was increased from 1 to 10 kΩ, to assess the pollutant decay of the organic matter contained in the wastes. As a result of this, the voltage was increased, whilst the current was decreased, with increasing values of the EPR. The results have been discussed with respect to the type and the predominant microorganisms (electrogenic/fermentative) being involved during the generation of the electric current. This new technology is very promising for converting waste into electricity by offering a way to clean up the polluted environment.
The accurate use of impedance analysis for the study of microbial electrochemical systems

Abstract:The present critical review aims to portray the principles and theoretical foundations that have been used for the application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to study electron-transfer mechanisms, mass transfer phenomena and distribution of the heterogeneous properties of microbial electrochemical systems (MXCs). Over the past eight years, the application of this method has allowed major breakthroughs, especially in the field of microbial fuel cells (MFCs); however, it is still most widely extended only to the calculation of internal resistances. The use and interpretation of EIS should greatly improve since the intrinsic knowledge of this field, and efforts and current trends in this field have already allowed its understanding based on rather meaningful physical properties and not only on fitting electrical analogues. From this perspective, the use, analysis and interpretation of EIS applied to the study of MXCs are critically examined. Together with the revision of more than 150 articles directly devoted to this topic, two examples of the correct and improved analysis of EIS data are extensively presented. The first one focuses on the use of graphical methods for improving EIS analysis and the other one concentrates on the elucidation of the constant phase element (CPE) parameters. CPEs have been introduced in equivalent circuit models, sometimes without solid justification or analysis; the effective capacitance has been obtained from CPE parameters, following an unsuitable theory for the case of microbial-electrochemical interfaces. The use of CPE is reviewed in terms of meaningful physical parameters, such as biofilm thickness. The use of a finite-diffusion element is reviewed throughout estimation of accurate values for obtaining the dimensionless numbers, Schmidt and Sherwood, in the context of a dioxygen-reducing-biocathode, under different flow-rate conditions. The use and analysis of EIS in this context are still emerging, but because of the promising potential of MXCs in renewable power generation, wastewater treatment and energy-positive biorefining, among other applications, it becomes necessary to boost our global capacities for the application of EIS-and especially its interpretation-so that we achieve a better understanding and optimization of these systems.
Electroactive biofilm communities in microbial fuel cells for the synergistic treatment of wastewater and bioelectricity generation

Abstract:Increasing industrialization and urbanization have contributed to a significant rise in wastewater discharge and exerted extensive pressure on the existing natural energy resources. Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a sustainable technology that utilizes wastewater for electricity generation. MFC comprises a bioelectrochemical system employing electroactive biofilms of several aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, such as Geobacter sulfurreducens, Shewanella oneidensis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Ochrobacterum pseudiintermedium. Since the electroactive biofilms constitute a vital part of the MFC, it is crucial to understand the biofilm-mediated pollutant metabolism and electron transfer mechanisms. Engineering electroactive biofilm communities for improved biofilm formation and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion can positively impact the bioelectrochemical system and improve fuel cell performance. This review article summarizes the role of electroactive bacterial communities in MFC for wastewater treatment and bioelectricity generation. A significant focus has been laid on understanding the composition, structure, and function of electroactive biofilms in MFC. Various electron transport mechanisms, including direct electron transfer (DET), indirect electron transfer (IET), and long-distance electron transfer (LDET), have been discussed. A detailed summary of the optimization of process parameters and genetic engineering strategies for improving the performance of MFC has been provided. Lastly, the applications of MFC for wastewater treatment, bioelectricity generation, and biosensor development have been reviewed.

Abstract:Strong control over experimental conditions in microfluidic channels provides a unique opportunity to study and optimize membraneless microbial fuel cells (MFCs), particularly with respect to the role of flow. However, improved performance and transferability of results to the wider MFC community require improvements to device stability under all applied operational conditions. To address these challenges, we present an easy-to-fabricate membraneless MFC that combines (i) O2 elimination via a gas diffusion barrier, (ii) integrated graphite electrodes, and (iii) optimized electrode placement to avoid of cross-contamination under all applied flow rates. Attention to all of these design features in the same platform resulted in operation of a MFC with a pure-culture anaerobic Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilm for half a year, six times longer than previously reported, without the use of an oxygen scavenger. As a result of higher device stability under high flow rates, power densities were four times higher than reported previously for microfluidic MFCs with the same biofilm.
Tubular Membrane Cathodes for Scalable Power Generation in Microbial Fuel Cells.

Abstract:One of the greatest challenges for using microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for wastewater treatment is creating a scalable architecture that provides large surface areas for oxygen reduction at the cathode and bacteria growth on the anode. We demonstrate here a scalable cathode concept by showing that a tubular ultrafiltration membrane with a conductive graphite coating and a nonprecious metal catalyst (CoTMPP) can be used to produce power in an MFC. Using a carbon paper anode (surface area Aan = 7 cm2, surface area per reactor volume Aan,s = 25 m2/m3), an MFC with two 3-cm tube cathodes (Acat = 27 cm2, Acat,s = 84 m2/m3) generated up to 8.8 W/m3 (403 mW/m2) using glucose [0.8 g/L in a 50 mM phosphate buffer solution (PBS)], which was only slightly less than that produced using a carbon paper cathode with a Pt catalyst (9.9 W/m3, 394 mW/m2; Acat= 7 cm2, Acat,s= 25 m2/m3). Coulombic efficiencies (CEs) with carbon paper anodes were 25-40% with tube cathodes (CoTMPP), compared to 7-19% with a carbon paper cathode. When a high-surface-area graphite brush anode was used (Aan = 2235 cm2, Aan,s = 7700 m2/m3) with two tube cathodes placed inside the reactor (Acat = 27 cm2, Acas, = 93 m2/m3), the MFC produced 17.7 W/m3 with a CE = 70-74% (200 mM PBS). Further increases in the surface area of the tube cathodes to 54 cm2 (120 m2/m3) increased the total power output (from 0.51 to 0.83 mW), but the increase in volume resulted in a constant volumetric power density (approximately 18 W/m3). These results demonstrate that an MFC design using tubular cathodes coated with nonprecious metal catalysts, and brush anodes, is a promising architecture that is intrinsically scalable for creating larger systems. Further increases in power output will be possible through the development of cathodes with lower internal resistances.

Abstract:The increased demand for alternative sustainable energy sources has boosted research in the field of fuel cells (FC). Among these, microbial fuel cells (MFC), based on microbial anodes and different types of cathodes, have been the subject of renewed interest due to their ability to simultaneously perform wastewater treatment and bioelectricity generation. Several different MFCs have been proposed in this work using different conditions and configurations, namely cathode materials, membranes, external resistances, and microbial composition, among other factors. This work reports the design and optimization of MFC performance and evaluates a hydrogel (Ion Jelly®) modified air-breathing cathode, with and without an immobilized laccase enzyme. This MFC configuration was also compared with other MFC configuration performances, namely abiotic and biocathodes, concerning wastewater treatment and electricity generation. Similar efficiencies in COD reduction, voltage (375 mV), PD (48 mW/m2), CD (130 mA/m2), and OCP (534 mV) were obtained. The results point out the important role of Ion Jelly® in improving the MFC air-breathing cathode performance as it has the advantage that its electroconductivity properties can be designed before modifying the cathode electrodes. The biofilm on MFC anodic electrodes presented a lower microbial diversity than the wastewater treatment effluent used as inocula, and inclusively Geobacteracea was also identified due to the high microbial selective niches constituted by MFC systems.

Increased Power Generation in a Continuous Flow MFC with Advective Flow Through the Porous Anode and Reduced Electrode Spacing

Abstract:The maximum power generated in a single-chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) has previously been shown to increase when the spacing between the electrodes is decreased from 4 to 2 cm. However, the maximum power from a MFC with glucose (500 mg/L) decreased from 811 mW/ m(2) (R-ex = 200 Omega, Coulombic efficiency of CE = 28%) to 423 mW/m(2) (Rex = 500 Omega, CE = 18%) when the electrode spacing was decreased from 2 to 1 cm (batch mode operation, power normalized by cathode projected area). This decrease in power was unexpected as the internal resistance decreased from 35 Omega (2-cm spacing) to 16 Omega (1-cm spacing). However, providing advective flow through the porous anode toward the cathode substantially increased power, resulting in the highest maximum power densities yet achieved in an air-cathode system using glucose or domestic wastewater as substrates. For glucose, with a 1-cm electrode spacing and flow through the anode with continuous flow operation of the MFC, the maximum power increased to 1540 mW/m(2) (51 W/m(3)) and the CE increased to 60%. Using domestic wastewater (255 +/- 10 mg of COD/L), the maximum power density was 464 mW/m(2) (15.5 W/m(3); CE = 27%). Although flow through the anode could lead to plugging, especially for particulate substrates such as domestic wastewater, the system was operated using glucose for over 42 days without clogging. These results show that power output in this air-cathode single-chamber MFC can be increased by reducing the electrode spacing if the reactors are operated in continuous flow mode with advective flow through the anode toward the cathode.
