Abstract:Xishuangbanna is a popular tourist destination in southern Yunnan Province, bordering with Vietnam and Laos, and Myanmar. There are more than 2 million cross-border travelers annually entering China at two land ports, Daluo and Mohan. To clarify the characteristics of HIV-1 prevalence among entry travelers, a retrospective epidemic investigation was conducted. Between 2003 and 2012, 196 among 91 432 entry travelers were detected to be HIV-1-positive, accounting for infection rate of 0.21%. Eighty-one gag-pol gene sequences were obtained for phylogenetic analyses and subsequent recombination analysis. It was shown that the most prevalent HIV-1 subtype in this population was circulating recombinant form (CRF) 01_AE (42, 51.86%), followed by CRF08_BC (17, 20.99%), CRF07_BC (4, 4.94%), B' (2, 2.47%), C (2, 2.47%), other recombinants (9, 11.11%), and undefined subtype (5, 6.17%). HIV-1 genotype distribution among travelers entering at two land ports is different, CRF01_AE and CRF08_BC accounted for a larger percentage among individuals from Daluo, whereas the proportions of subtype C and undefined URFs were larger among individuals from Mohan. The undefined subtype indicates the occurrence of novel HIV-1 subtype or CRF. This finding is useful for developing of AIDS prevention strategies.
Phylogenetic characteristics of HIV-1 among travelers entering China from Myanmar: A retrospective study

Abstract:Due to the open policy of the Chinese government, a large number of Burmese individuals enter China at land ports in Yunnan province for travel or business. However, the situation of HIV-1 infection and its phylogenetic characteristics among these travelers remains unclear, which is a potential threat to public health. From January 2003 to December 2012, a total of 1,961 travelers were detected to be positive for HIV-1 infection at land ports between Myanmar and Yunnan province, China. From 1153 (58.8%) Burmese of them, we randomly collected 489 serum samples for HIV-1 subtype/recombinant analysis. Based on successfully obtained 223 gag-RT sequences, 187 of them were genotyped as 2 subtypes and 3 CRFs. CRF01_AE was showed to be the most prevalent genotype (54.3%), followed by subtypes C (13.5%) and B (10.8%). Notably, CRF07_BC (1.3%) and CRF08_BC (4.0%) were mainly distributed in travelers from Shan state and Kachin (91.7%, 11/12), but was not found in travelers from the capital city of Yangon (0/16). Additionally, there were 36 samples (16.1%) were preliminary determined as unique recombinant forms (URFs). The higher HIV-1 infection among entering travelers from Myanmar and its diverse and complex genotypes distribution suggest this bridge population may facilitate the transmission of HIV-1. It is necessary to have the strict monitoring on this population for prevention of HIV-1 cross-border transmission.
[Prophylactic drainage after thyroidectomy: a randomized trial].

Abstract:A randomized clinical trial of surgical drainage in thyroid surgery was performed with 97 patients. Using equivalence testing it is reported that morbidity was not significantly different between the two groups and the length of hospital stay was shorter in the undrained group. It is possible to perform thyroidectomy without drainage in a selected population.

Abstract:Background: Yunnan is not only considered the region with the most concerning human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 prevalence, but is also the central hub for the spread of HIV-1 from Southeast Asia to the other provinces of China. Yunnan has the highest proportion of entry travelers who have transmitted HIV from neighbored Southeast Asian countries to mainland of China. Methods: Between 2003 and 2012, we recruited 280,961 entry travelers at land ports located in 7 bordering prefectures respectively in the Yunnan Province for HIV-1 screening. Based on the detection of HIV-1 antibody, the HIV-1 infection rate was determined. Results: Among the recruited entry travelers, 2380 were determined HIV-1 positive with infection rate of 0.85%. Travelers entering the Dehong port had the highest HIV-1 infection rate (5.12%), followed by those entering Baoshan (0.88%), Lincang (0.83%), and Honghe (0.71%). For all HIV-1 positive cases, travelers aged 21-30 and 31-40 were the most commonly infected individuals, accounting for 38.45% and 37.77% of all cases, respectively. The most common occupation of the infected population was driver (42.38%), and the proportion of industrials had increased yearly. Based on the reported risk factors, sexual transmission was the main HIV-1 infection route (77.11%) of this population. Conclusions: We have clarified the rate of HIV-1 infection among this bridge population. The characteristics of HIV-1 positive population and high geographical heterogeneity have provided the necessary epidemiological data for monitoring the HIV-1 epidemic among cross-border travelers in Yunnan and to further understand the cross-border spreading of the HIV-1 infection.
Interactions of cholesterol esters with phospholipids: cholesteryl myristate and dimyristoyl lecithin.

Abstract:The ternary phase diagram of cholesteryl myristate--dimyristoyl lecithin--water has been determined by polarizing light microscopy, scanning calorimetry, and x-ray diffraction. Hydrated dimyristoyl lecithin forms a lamellar liquid--crystalline phase (L alpha) at temperatures greater than 23 degrees C into which limited amounts of cholesteryl myristate (less than 5 wt. %) can be incorporated. The amount of cholesterol ester incorporated is dependent upon the degree of hydration of the L alpha phase. Below 23 degrees C dimyristoyl lecithin forms ordered hydrocarbon chain structures (L beta' and P beta') which do not incorporate cholesterol ester. Comparison with other phospholipid--cholesterol ester--water phase diagrams suggests the following general principles: i) the incorporation of cholesterol ester occurs only into liquid crystalling phospholipid bilayers, ii) the extent of incorporation is temperature-dependent, with increasing amounts of cholesterol ester being incorporated at higher temperatures, and iii) unsaturated cholesterol esters induce increased disordering of the phospholipid bilayers.
Molecular Epidemiological Study on HIV/AIDS under the Follow-Up Program in Zhejiang Province in 2009

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To analyze the molecular epidemiological characteristics on HIV infectors/AIDS patients (HIV/AIDS) under a follow-up program in Zhejiang province in 2009.METHODS:303 cases were randomly sampled. Information on the cases was collected and followed by genomic DNA extraction. Gag gene fragments were amplified by nested PCR, followed by sequencing and bio-informatic analysis.RESULTS:The rate of success for sequence acquisition was 74.3% (225/303). Distributions of HIV subtypes were as follows: CRF01_AE (58.7%), CRF07_BC (13.8%), CRF08_BC (9.8%), B' (15.1%), C (1.8%), G (0.4%) and unassigned BC (unique recombinant form 0.4%).RESULTS:from the HIV BLAST analysis showed that the sources of strains with the highest homology involved in 10 provinces/municipalities (Liaoning, Guangxi, Yunnan, Henan, etc.) and five other countries (Thailand, Vietnam, India, South Africa and Libya). The CRF01_AE phylogenetic tree was divided into four clusters. The sequences of HIV/AIDS with homosexual transmission showed a gather in cluster 1, and mix with those infected through heterosexual contact.CONCLUSION:Circulating recombinant forms of HIV seemed to play a dominant role in Zhejiang province. Unique recombinant form and new subtype of HIV were found. People living with HIV under homosexual transmission and heterosexual transmission had a trend of interwoven with each other. Increase of both the diversity and complexity of HIV strains were also noticed in Zhejiang province.

Abstract:THE SYMPTOM of finger agnosia has been the subject of extensive theoretical considerations. The controversial positions defended by various investigators have been recently reviewed by Bentonl and by Kinsbourne and Warrington.2 It appears from the literature that there does not exist an uncontested definition of this peculiar symptom, nor is there agreement on the appropriate method of testing for it. The original concept suggested by Gerstman$ implies that the essential feature is the inability to differentiate single fingers, either on the patient’s own hand or on the hand of another person. Testing procedures include verbal and nonverbal tasks. Most of these have been assembled by Benton‘ into a comprehensive battery of finger tests. Recently, Kinsbourne and Warrington2 have proposed five new tests, four of which are nonverbal in nature. These tasks require the awareness of the order of the fingers and of the structure of the hand. Apparently, however, these methods are not fully comparable with the clinical methods used to test the identification of single fingers. Previous studies of this problem have been based on single cases or on highly selected groups. The latter holds true also for the 32 subjects examined by Kinsbourne and Warrington. Therefore, it appeared useful to carry out another investigation of finger agnosia using various finger tests, verbal and nonverbal, with a large group of unselected braindamaged patients. The starting point was a study of the so-called Gerstmann ~yndrome.~ In agreement with Benton,s we reached the conclusion that the common denominator of these symptoms is an aphasic disturbance. This view has been corroborated in another study of right-left disorientation,G which is another component of the Gerstmann syndrome.
Nationwide Trends in Molecular Epidemiology of HIV-1 in China

Abstract:To estimate the nationwide and regional distribution of HIV-1 genotypes in China in the past three decades, province-specific HIV-1 molecular epidemiology data were derived from 260 independent studies of HIV molecular prevalence through searching PubMed, VIP Chinese Journal Database (VIP), China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Data from January 1981 to December 2015. The nationwide and regional distribution of HIV-1 genotypes was estimated by weighting the genotype distribution from each province- and risk-specific subpopulation with the number of reported cases in the corresponding subgroups in the relevant periods. A sharp transition of HIV-1 subtypes and recombinant distribution was observed in various risk groups and regions over time. CRF01_AE has rapidly surged among almost all risk groups and in all areas, and it has become dominant among men who have sex with men and heterosexuals. A wide variety of new circulating recombinant forms (CRFs) and unique recombinant forms (URFs) were rapidly appearing in several risk groups and regions. After 2007, CRF01_AE was the most prevalent strain, accounting for 42.5% of all national infections, followed by CRF07_BC (28.9%), subtype B'/B (10.9%), CRF08_BC (10.0%), and subtype C (2.8%). URFs and other CRFs were responsible for 2.6% and fewer than 1% of infections nationwide, respectively. The nationwide and regional distributions of HIV-1 subtypes and recombinants were sharply shifting in China. CRF01_AE and new CRFs played an increasing role in the nationwide or regional HIV pandemic. The nationwide diversity of HIV-1 poses a formidable challenge to HIV vaccine development and disease prevention.
Acquisition and transmission of HIV-1 among migrants and Chinese in Guangzhou, China from 2008 to 2012: Phylogenetic analysis of surveillance data

Abstract:Background: Post-migration infection and domestic transmission of HIV-1 between immigrants and local population are critical for the HIV epidemic, but have not been addressed thus far in China. Methods: Transmission clusters were analyzed with two cluster reconstruction methods, HIV-TRACE and Cluster Picker, using 1695 HIV-1 pol sequences obtained from 139 HIV-infected foreigners and 1556 Chinese natives in Guangzhou, China from 2008 to 2012. The geographic origin of the HIV-1 sequences was further determined by PastML while the factors associated with recent HIV-1 transmission were documented by logistic regression analysis. Results: HIV-1 genotypes that are prevalent in African and East Asian countries were identified in HIV-infected Chinese subjects and vice versa. In addition, more NRTI drug resistance mutations were found in HIV-infected foreigners than in native Chinese (p < 0.001). HIV-1 transmission between HIV-infected foreigners and native Chinese individuals was documented in 12.95% (18/139) of the HIV-infected foreigners. Furthermore, Asian (odds ratio [OR] = 3.45), male (OR = 16.88) and those with known HIV-1 infection routes (OR = 3.23) were more likely associated with recent HIV-1 transmission in China. The Chinese natives linked to recent HIV-1 transmission were more likely to be infected through men who have sex with men (OR = 3.05) or people who inject drugs (OR = 3.05), rather than by heterosexual transmission. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates the impact of recent HIV-1 transmission between HIV-infected foreigners and Chinese natives on the HIV-1 epidemic in Guangzhou, China. Moreover, the results highlight the importance of phylogenetic analysis of HIV-1 surveillance data and the need for specific prevention strategies that target the immigrant population.
Characterizing HIV-1 transmission by genetic cluster analysis among newly diagnosed patients in the China-Myanmar border region from 2020 to 2023

Abstract:Cluster analysis of HIV sequence can provide insights into viral transmission patterns in border regions. This study aims to illuminate the HIV-1 subtype distribution and transmission dynamics among newly diagnosed individuals in Dehong prefecture, a region along the China-Myanmar border. Among 948 participants with pol gene sequences, 36 HIV-1 subtypes were identified, with URFs (18.8%, 178/948) being the dominant strain, followed by CRF01_AE (18.5%, 175/948) and CRF07_BC (10.9%, 103/948). Additionally, 287 sequences (30.3%, 287/948) were grouped into 91 clusters, 31 of which contained both Chinese and Burmese individuals. Multivariable logistic regression indicated that men who have sex with men (MSM), CD4 + cell count of 200∼499, and 500 cells/μl and above, and CRF01_AE were risk factors for entering the network. Through the Chord diagram, we found frequent transmission relationships among heterosexual China male group, especially those over 35 years of age. Additionally, the correlation between heterosexual Myanmar female group and heterosexual China male group among cross-risk groups deserved to be emphasized. Furthermore, the network exhibited a growing trend over time, with the largest active transmission cluster identified in Ruili county. In conclusion, the HIV-1 subtype landscape in Dehong has become increasingly complex, and the region has faced risks of transmission from both domestic and international sources. Targeted intervention strategies should be implemented for MSM, heterosexual Chinese middle-aged and elderly men, and heterosexual Burmese young adults to mitigate these risks. These findings provided evidence-based insights for local government to formulate coordinated transnational intervention approaches.

Infants use social context to bind actions into a collaborative sequence.

Abstract:Eye tracking was used to show that 18-month-old infants are sensitive to social context as a sign that others' actions are bound together as a collaborative sequence based on a joint goal. Infants observed five identical demonstrations in which Actor 1 moved a block to one location and Actor 2 moved the same block to a new location, creating a sequence of actions that could be considered either individual actions or collaboration. In the test phase, Actor 1 was alone and sitting so that she could reach both locations. The question was whether she would place a new block in the location she had previously (individual goal) or in the location that could be considered the goal of collaboration (joint goal). Importantly, in the Social condition, the actors were socially engaged with each other before and during the demonstration, while in the Non-Social condition, they were not. Results revealed that infants in the Social condition spontaneously anticipated Actor 1 placing her block in the joint goal location more often than those in the Non-Social condition. Thus, the social context seems to allow infants to bind actions into a collaborative sequence and anticipate joint rather than individual goals, giving insight into how actions are perceived using top-down processing early in life.

Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Waste Activated Sludge versus Mesophilic Anaerobic Digestion

Abstract:Dissimilarities between thermophilic and mesophilic anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) Typical WAS with total solids (TS) concentrations of 30 and 60 g/L were digested anaerobically in a batch digester at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures. Solids reduction, total COD changes, the production of different volatile fatty acids (VFAs), the quality and quantity of the produced biogas were investigated and compared for both temperatures. The mesophilic digestion took place after 32 to 36 days with slightly more methane production and removal of organics than thermophilic digestion. The results showed that there was no significant difference between thermophilic and mesophilic digestion with respect to the gas composition. Among the VFAs, as the key intermediates, only propionate accumulated during sludge anaerobic digestion at mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures. A systematic review of temporal and geographical distributions of HIV genotypes in China during 2000-2012

Abstract:Objective To understand the temporal and geographical distributions of HIV genetic subtypes in China during 2000- 2012. Methods A systematic literature review was conducted by exhaustively searching electronic databases including the CNKI Journal Full-text Database in Chinese and the PubMed database in English. Eligible papers were selected and reviewed according to preset inclusion and exclusion criteria. HIV subtypes were tabulated by calendar year,geographic region and HIV transmission mode. Results A total of 78 articles were included with a total of 20 provinces in China reported. The HIV subtypes in our country included subtype A,B,B',C,D,E,G,K,CRF01_AE,CRF07_BC, CRF08_BC,CRF02_AG,CRF03_AB,CRF12_BF,CRF14_BG,CRF02_AG / CRF01_AE,CRF08_BC / B,CRF07_BC / CRF01_AE,G / CRF12_BF,A / CRF10_CD,CRF01_AE / B',U / CRF01_AE,B / C and U / G. The most prevalent strains were CRF01_AE,CRF07_BC,CRF08_BC,B'and B. There were relationships between the subtypes and the transmission routes. The circulation recombinant forms was increased and the unique recombination forms came forth recently in our country. Conclusions The distribution of HIV subtypes has been changing and becoming more and more complicated along with the rapidly changing HIV epidemiology in China since the decade ago. Particular attentions are warranted.
Characteristics of genotype, drug resistance, and molecular transmission network among newly diagnosed HIV-1 infections in Shenzhen, China

Abstract:The HIV-1 pandemic has persisted for four decades, and poses a major challenge to global public health. Shenzhen, a city with large number of migrant populations in China, is suffering HIV-1 epidemic. It is necessary to continuously conduct the molecular surveillance among newly diagnosed HIV-1 patients in these migrant population. In this study, plasma samples of newly diagnosed and ART-naive HIV-1 infections were collected from Shenzhen city in China. The partial genes of HIV-1 gag and pol were amplified and sequenced for the analysis of genotype, drug resistance, and molecular transmission network. Ninety-one sequences of pol gene were obtained from newly diagnosed HIV-1 infections in Shenzhen, and seven HIV-1 subtypes were revealed in this investigation. Among them, the circulating recombinant form (CRF) 07_BC was the mostly frequent subtype (53.8%, 49/91), followed by CRF01_AE (20.9%, 19/91), CRF55_01B (9.9%, 9/91), unique recombinant forms (URFs) (8.8%, 8/91), B (3.3%, 3/91), CRF59_01B (2.2%, 2/91), and CRF08_BC (1.1%, 1/91). The overall prevalence of pretreatment drug resistance (PDR) was 23.1% (21/91), and 52.38% (11/21) of the PDR was specific for the nonnucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs). Furthermore, a total of 3091 pol gene sequences were used to generate 19 molecular transmission clusters, and then one growing cluster, a new cluster, and a cluster with growth reactivation were identified. The result revealed that more sexual partner, CRF_07BC subtype, and seven amino acid deletions in gag p6 region might be the influencing factors associated with the high risk of transmission behavior. Compared with CRF01_AE subtype, CRF07_BC subtype strains were more likely to form clusters in molecular transmission network. This suggests that long-term surveillance of the HIV-1 molecular transmission should be a critical measure to achieve a precise intervention for controlling the spread of HIV-1 in China.
Independent epidemic patterns of HIV-1 CRF01_AE lineages driven by mobile population in Shenzhen, an immigrant city of China

Abstract:Abstract Shenzhen, a city with >12 million migrant population, may play a key role in the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 in China. The transmission dynamics of CRF01_AE, a predominant subtype in Shenzhen, is a good model to characterize the impact of human mobility on HIV-1 epidemic locally and nationally. We used phylodynamic and phylogeographic methods to estimate the viral transmission dynamics and migration trajectory of variable lineages based on 1,423 CRF01_AE sequences in Shenzhen sampled between 2006 and 2015. Eleven lineages of CRF01_AE were detected in Shenzhen. Of those, four main lineages originated during the 1990s. Their basic viral reproduction number (R0) ranged 1.96–3.92. The effective viral reproduction number (Re) of two lineages prevalent among heterosexuals/people who inject drugs had reduced <1 at the end of sampling, and the main sources were the intra-provincial immigrants (72 per cent) for one and local residents of Shenzhen (91 per cent) for another. Within two lineages among men who have sex with men (MSM), Re had been above or close to 1 at the end of sampling, and the immigrants from Jiangxi/Shaanxi and Hubei as sources accounted for 93 per cent and 68 per cent of all viral migration events, respectively. Moreover, no obvious recipients were found throughout the viral migration history for any lineage. Our findings demonstrate that HIV epidemic is declining in Shenzhen, which coincided with the initiation of the interventions during the 2000s. However, the obvious differences of the epidemic patterns between lineages emphasize the importance of further targeting interventions and continued molecular tracing, focusing on high-risk transmission sources among MSM.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the features of distribution on HIV-1 gene subtypes among newly reported HIV/AIDS cases in the border areas of Yunnan province. Methods: A total of 233 newly reported HIV/AIDS cases aged 18 or more were consecutively included in the border counties of Dehong Dai and Jingpo autonomous prefecture (Dehong prefecture), Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture (Honghe prefecture) of Yunnan province from November 2015 to October 2016. HIV-1 RNA was extracted with pol and env genes amplified. HIV-1 gene subtypes were determined through phylogenetic analysis. Results: A total of 146 out of 233 specimens were genotyped successfully. HIV-1 was found to have had 8 gene subtypes in Dehong prefecture, with the unique recombinant forms (URFs) as the predominant (52.8%, 57/108) type, including 56.8% (21/37) of the cases with Chinese ethnicity and another 50.7% (36/71) were Myanmar citizens. Four HIV-1 gene subtypes were detected in Honghe prefecture, with CRF01_AE as predominant (71.1%, 27/38), including 81.0% (17/21) Vietnamese and 58.8% (10/17) Chinese. Differences on the distribution of HIV-1 gene subtypes were seen statistically significant between Dehong prefecture and Honghe prefecture (χ(2)=61.072, P<0.001). Conclusions: The distribution of HIV-1 gene subtypes showed big difference in the two border areas of Yunnan province, suggesting that both Chinese or non- Chinese citizens living in the area should be taken good care of, in terms of HIV/AIDS prevention and control.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid increase in HIV prevalence of men who have sex with men (MSM) in recent years and common human migration and travelling across different provinces in China, MSM are now finding it easier to meet each other, which might contribute to local HIV epidemics as well as fueling cross-province transmission. We performed a cross-sectional survey in 2018–2019 to investigate the current HIV subtype diversity and inferred HIV strain transmission origin among MSM in Guangxi province, China based on a phylogenetic analysis. Based on 238 samples, we found that the HIV-1 subtype diversity was more complicated than before, except for three major HIV subtypes/circulating recombinant forms (CRFs): CRF07_BC, CRF01_AE, CRF55_01B, five other subtypes/CRFs (CRF59_01B, B, CRF08_BC, CRF67_01B, CRF68_01B) and five unique recombinant forms (URFs) were detected. In total, 76.8% (169/220) of samples were infected with HIV from local circulating strains, while others originated from other provinces, predominantly Guangdong and Shanghai. The high diversity of HIV recombinants and complicated HIV transmission sources in Guangxi MSM indicates that there has been an active sexual network between HIV positive MSM both within and outside Guangxi without any effective prevention. Inter-province collaboration must be enforced to provide tailored HIV prevention and control services to MSM in China.

Abstract:We observed a slight drop in the growth of Xenopus laevis and Pseudacris triseriata larvae following acute exposure (24–48 h) during egg development to three concentrations of TCDD (0.3, 3.0, 30.0 μg/l). Our exposure protocol was modeled on a previous investigation that was designed to mimic the effects of maternal deposition of TCDD. The doses selected were consistent with known rates of maternal transfer between mother and egg using actual adult body burdens from contaminated habitats. Egg and embryonic mortality immediately following exposure increased only among 48 h X. laevis treatments. Control P. triseriata and X. laevis completed metamorphosis more quickly than TCDD-treated animals. The snout-vent length of recently transformed P. triseriata did not differ between treatments although controls were heavier than high-dosed animals. Likewise, the snout-vent length and weight of transformed X. laevis did not differ between control and TCDD treatments. These findings provide additional evidence that amphibians, including P. triseriata and X. laevis are relatively insensitive to acute exposure to TCDD during egg and embryonic development. Although the concentrations selected for this study were relatively high, they were not inconsistent with our current understanding of bioaccumulation via maternal transfer.
