Abstract:In this paper, a novel two-lane car-following model considering driver's visual effect is proposed. Changes in driver behaviour are directly stimulated from visual information and an improved time-to-collision (TTC) calculation is presented. Using TTC, stimuli are formulated for describing the influence of leading vehicles. Besides, the model is established based on the optimal velocity model framework. The stability of the proposed model is discussed by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Moreover, the influences of parameters and the comparison between models are investigated by simulations, which show that the proposed model can effectively describe the influences. Finally, the model is calibrated and verified by NGSIM trajectory data, which shows that the proposed model fitting effect can be improved by 7.78%, 44.96%, and 32.07% respectively compared with other three models. This study may provide a basis for the design of control strategies for future intelligent connected vehicles in multi-lane environments.

Abstract:The car-following behavior of individual drivers in real city traffic is studied on the basis of (publicly available) trajectory datasets recorded by a vehicle equipped with an radar sensor. By means of a nonlinear optimization procedure based on a genetic algorithm, we calibrate the Intelligent Driver Model and the Velocity Difference Model by minimizing the deviations between the observed driving dynamics and the simulated trajectory when following the same leading vehicle. The reliability and robustness of the nonlinear fits are assessed by applying different optimization criteria, i.e., different measures for the deviations between two trajectories. The obtained errors are in the range between~11% and~29% which is consistent with typical error ranges obtained in previous studies. In addition, we found that the calibrated parameter values of the Velocity Difference Model strongly depend on the optimization criterion, while the Intelligent Driver Model is more robust in this respect. By applying an explicit delay to the model input, we investigated the influence of a reaction time. Remarkably, we found a negligible influence of the reaction time indicating that drivers compensate for their reaction time by anticipation. Furthermore, the parameter sets calibrated to a certain trajectory are applied to the other trajectories allowing for model validation. The results indicate that ``intra-driver variability'' rather than ``inter-driver variability'' accounts for a large part of the calibration errors. The results are used to suggest some criteria towards a benchmarking of car-following models.

The values of the mean and standard deviation of the virtual-to-real overlay error in visual angles, which are reported for different checkerboard distances, are to be corrected. Due to a typing error within the data analysis code, we mistakenly considered an erroneous value of the average angular resolution for the eye-replacement camera. Abstract:Adaptation is the process by which we adjust internal models of the body, world, and mind in response to sensory feedback. While adaptation is studied extensively in the context of motor control, there is limited evidence that cognitive functions such as working memory are subject to the same error-driven adaptive control mechanism. To examine the possibility that internal spatial representations undergo adaptation, we had participants perform a task that interleaved a perceptual discrimination task and a spatial working memory task. Perceptual discrimination trials (85% of trials) presented an initial peripheral cue to exogenously capture attention, immediately followed by a displaced target stimulus. This sequence of events served to repeatedly induce a covert attentional allocation error. Interleaved spatial working memory trials (15% of trials) presented a stimulus at a pseudorandom peripheral location followed by a delay interval. On half of the working memory trials, the stimulus was surreptitiously presented at the same location as the initial attentional cue. We found that as attentional errors accumulated over the course of the experiment, participants' spatial recall shifted to counteract the attentional error. The magnitude of this shift was proportional to the number of induced errors. Recall performance rapidly recovered following the offset of error trials. Multiple control experiments ruled out alternative explanations for these results, such as oculomotor confounds and attentional biases unrelated to error. These findings indicate that the computational mechanisms governing the adaptation of motor commands appear to similarly serve to adjust and calibrate spatial cognition.

Impact of Partially Automated Driving Functions on Forensic Accident Reconstruction: A Simulator Study on Driver Reaction Behavior in the Event of a Malfunctioning System Behavior

Abstract:Partially automated driving functions (SAE Level 2) can control a vehicle's longitudinal and lateral movements. However, taking over the driving task involves automation risks that the driver must manage. In severe accidents, the driver's ability to avoid a collision must be assessed, considering their expected reaction behavior. The primary goal of this study is to generate essential data on driver reaction behavior in case of malfunctions in partially automated driving functions for use in legal affairs. A simulator study with two scenarios involving 32 subjects was conducted for this purpose. The first scenario investigated driver reactions to system limitations during cornering. The results show that none of the subjects could avoid leaving their lane and moving into the oncoming lane and, therefore, could not control the situation safely. Due to partial automation, we could also identify a new part of the reaction time, the hands-on time, which leads to increased steering reaction times of 1.18 to 1.74 s. The second scenario examined driver responses to phantom braking caused by AEBS. We found that 25 of the 32 subjects could not override the phantom braking by pressing the accelerator pedal, although 16 subjects were informed about the system analog to the actual vehicle manuals. Overall, the study suggests that the current legal perspective on vehicle control and the expected driver reaction behavior for accident avoidance should be reconsidered.

Abstract:Accurate occurrence time and location of a reported crash are critical to effective crash analysis. Although there has been a proliferation of studies that attempt to correct the bias associated with a reported crash, most, if not all, of them focus exclusively on correcting the location bias. In this research, we propose to simultaneously correct the time and location bias associated with a reported crash, which is new to the literature. In our approach, we first follow standard procedures to identify the set of candidate links in the vicinity of the reported crash location. We then develop an integer programming model with a set of novel constraints to identify the candidate whose spatiotemporal evolution of travel speed is most congruent with the occurrence of a crash. We subsequently use the time and location where travel speed begins to drop to correct the bias associated with this crash. We prove that the spatiotemporal impact region, which characterizes the evolution of travel speed, estimated by our model is consistent with the propagation of shockwaves even when there are multiple candidate links and the exact occurrence time and location of the crash are unknown. This relaxes the standard assumptions required by existing models in the literature. We validate our model using real crash data in Beijing and find that our model can reduce the average bias in time from 73 min to 1.6 min, or a 78.08% reduction; and reduce the average bias in location from 0.156 km to 0.024 km, or a 84.62% reduction. Abstract:Accident analyses repeatedly reported the considerable contribution of run-off-road incidents to fatalities in road traffic, and despite considerable advances in assistive technologies to mitigate devastating consequences, little insight into the drivers' brain response during such accident scenarios has been gained. While various literature documents neural correlates to steering motion, the driver's mental state, and the impact of distraction and fatigue on driving performance, the cortical substrate of continuous deviations of a car from the road – i.e., how the brain represents a varying discrepancy between the intended and observed car position and subsequently assigns customized levels of corrective measures – remains unclear. Furthermore, the superposition of multiple subprocesses, such as visual and erroneous feedback processing, performance monitoring, or motor control, complicates a clear interpretation of engaged brain regions within car driving tasks. In the present study, we thus attempted to disentangle these subprocesses, employing passive and active steering conditions within both error-free and error-prone vehicle operation conditions. We recorded EEG signals of 26 participants in 13 sessions, simultaneously measuring pairs of Executors (actively steering) and Observers (strictly observing) during a car driving task. We observed common brain patterns in the Executors regardless of error-free or error-prone vehicle operation, albeit with a shift in spectral activity from motor beta to occipital alpha oscillations within erroneous conditions. Further, significant frontocentral differences between Observers and Executors, tracing back to the caudal anterior cingulate cortex, arose during active steering conditions, indicating increased levels of motor-behavioral cognitive control. Finally, we present regression results of both the steering signal and the car position, indicating that a regression of continuous deviations from the road utilizing the EEG might be feasible.

Abstract:Different kinds of warning algorithms were used in the Frontal Collision Warning Systems (FCWS) for threat assessment, which were based on different kinds of kinematics measures of vehicles. In this paper, we discuss the required deceleration warning algorithm in two different situations, and consider a more complicated scenario. Based on field experiment data, we use an experienced driver's action which is denoted as "Real Acceleration" to evaluate the proposed algorithm's efficiency, and several other algorithms are evaluated for comparison. Furthermore, an improvement of required deceleration algorithm is proposed. The threat of lane-changing vehicle is also considered in the new algorithm.

Abstract:Investigating the factors underlying perceived speed and risk is crucial to ensure safe driving. However, existing studies on this topic usually measure speed and risk perception indirectly after a driving session, which makes it difficult to trace dynamic effects and time points of potential misestimates. To address this problem, we developed and validated a novel continuous method for dynamically measuring risk and speed perceptions. To study the factors affecting risk and speed perception, we presented participants with videos captured on the same racing track from the same point of view but with different drivers who varied in their speed and risk profiles. During the experiment, participants used a joystick to continuously rate the subjectively perceived risk of driving in the first block and the perceived speed in the second block. Our analysis of these dynamic ratings indicates that risk and speed estimates were decoupled, with curves resulting in decreased speeds but increased risk ratings. However, a close distance to the car in front increased both speed and risk. Based on actual and estimated speed data, we found that overtaking cars on curves resulted in participants overestimating their own speed, whereas an increase in the distance to the car in front on a straight course led to underestimations of their own speed. Our results showcase the usefulness of dynamic rating profiles for in-depth investigations into situations that could result in drivers misjudging speed or risk and will thus help the development of more intelligent, human-centered driving assistance systems.

Abstract:In many motor tasks, optimal performance presupposes that human movement planning is based on an accurate internal model of the subject's own motor error. We developed a motor choice task that allowed us to test whether the internal model implicit in a subject's choices differed from the actual in isotropy (elongation) and variance. Subjects were first trained to hit a circular target on a touch screen within a time limit. After training, subjects were repeatedly shown pairs of targets differing in size and shape and asked to choose the target that was easier to hit. On each trial they simply chose a target - they did not attempt to hit the chosen target. For each subject, we tested whether the internal model implicit in her target choices was consistent with her true error distribution in isotropy and variance. For all subjects, movement end points were anisotropic, distributed as vertically elongated bivariate Gaussians. However, in choosing targets, almost all subjects effectively assumed an isotropic distribution rather than their actual anisotropic distribution. Roughly half of the subjects chose as though they correctly estimated their own variance and the other half effectively assumed a variance that was more than four times larger than the actual, essentially basing their choices merely on the areas of the targets. The task and analyses we developed allowed us to characterize the internal model of motor error implicit in how humans plan reaching movements. In this task, human movement planning - even after extensive training - is based on an internal model of human motor error that includes substantial and qualitative inaccuracies.
