Abstract:A series of poly(vinyl chloride)-g-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PVC-g-PNIPAM) amphiphilic copolymers with different graft lengths and densities were synthesized via the single electron transfer-living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) of NIPAM using poly(vinyl chloride-co-allyl alpha-bromoisobutyrate) as macroinitiator. The living nature of SET-LRP grafting copolymerization was verified by the kinetics study and narrow molecular weight distribution of PNIPAM grafts. The chemical structure, micellisation, and thermally-induced multistep aggregation of PVC-g-PNIPAMs were investigated. PVC-g-PNIPAMs form micelles comprised of a PVC core and PNIPAM corona in water at room temperature. These micelles are thermoresponsive and show a lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The micelle size and LCST of PVC-g-PNIPAM increase with increasing the graft density and length of PNIPAM. PVC-g-PNIPAM exhibits a very unique aggregation behavior above its LCST and forms a three-dimensional macroscopic aggregate with a well-defined and tunable shape at an extremely low concentration (similar to 0.1 wt%). The aggregate shrinks to a more compact structure with the further increase of temperature. Higher copolymer concentration, longer graft length, and lower graft density are favorable for the macroscopic micelle aggregation of PVC-g-PNIPAMs. A self-standing and superporous PVC-g-PNIPAM material having an extremely low density of similar to 0.01 g cm(-3) and a high porosity of >99% is attained after freeze-drying the micelle aggregate.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are salts which persist in liquid state near room temperature. They are characterized by high thermal and chemical resistance, good solubility, and high ionic conductivity. ILs can be used as permeability enhancers for transdermal delivery of drugs. The study of the interaction of ILs with lipids is important for understanding their potential toxicity to cells and the environment. In this work, we discuss features of the molecular structure and mobility of the aqueous system consisting of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) and ethylammonium nitrate ionic liquid (EAN) mixtures studied by NMR and computer simulation MD methods. The 31 P NMR line shape analysis revealed two lipid states in the systems: in D 2 O it is a lamellar liquid crystalline state associated with the formed vesicle-like structures of DMPC, while in EAN it is isotopic. The ratio of these states correlates with the ratio of solvents in the system. Based on the self-diffusion coefficients obtained by NMR, sizes of the diffusing particles were estimated. The method of MD showed that DMPC molecules assemble into micelles in the presence of water. In the mixtures of EAN and water the configuration of DMPC molecules changed. When DMPC interacts only with EAN, the micelle disintegrates. It is thus inferred that the presence of IL in the environment significantly affects the structure of the lipid system. The comparative analysis of the SDCs revealed a correlation between values obtained by MD and NMR methods.

Abstract:Self-assembly of ionic liquids (ILs) in solution has attracted wide attention due to their potential applications in various fields. The nature of counterions, especially aromatic counterions, will significantly affect the aggregation and morphological properties of ILs surfactants. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are applied to study the influence of three organic and inorganic counterions (phenolate (PO − ), benzoate (BZ − ), and Cl − ) on the micellar structure of imidazolium (C 14 mim + ) based ILs surfactant in aqueous solutions. Three micelles all possess prolate shape. The PO − , BZ − , and Cl − ions hardly affect the orientation and length of hydrophobic chains in micellar interior. Hydration numbers and average radial density distributions analyses show that interactions between micelles and water molecules are different in studied micelles. Surrounding water molecules penetrate into the deepest region in [C 14 mim][Cl] micelle. However, adsorbed Cl − ions are mainly located on micellar surface, not penetrating into micellar interior. Due to the intrinsic hydrophobicity of organic ions, both PO − and BZ − ions enter into deeper positions in micelles. Unlike Cl − ions, there exist π-interactions between adsorbed PO − and BZ − ions themselves. One interesting finding is that adsorbed PO − and BZ − ions can make micelle radius ( R g ) increase but make solvent accessible surface area (SASA) decrease. Conversely, adsorbed Cl − ions make both R g and SASA increase. Three MD models for different C 14 mim + based micelles are proposed.

Abstract:This work reports the study of the anion effect on the aggregation behavior of the long-chain spacers of dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) in a 4.75 % (v/v) ethanol-water solution as well as in ethanol (95 %). The anions studied were Br−, NO3−, BF4−, SCN− and NTf2−. Aggregation behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), conductivity, surface tension, and fluorescence. In the ethanol-water solution, the critical aggregation concentration (CAC), free energy aggregation (∆G°a), and the ionization degree (α) all significantly decreased with the increase in anion hydrophobicity. In ethanol, the CAC and ∆G°a values also decreased with the increase in anion size and hydrophobicity. The free energy adsorption (∆G°ads) data showed that the dicationic ILs have good surfactant activity, and this property improved with the decrease in the hydration radius of the anions. Influence of electrostatics on the oxidation rates of organic compounds in heterogeneous Fenton systems.

Abstract:Electrostatic effects influence the oxidation rates of charged dissolved organic compounds in systems where the hydroxyl radical (*OH) is produced by the iron oxide-catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Experiments were performed using goethite and the *OH probes 14C-labeled formic acid, 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), and nitrobenzene. At pH 4 and an ionic strength of 0.01 M, formic acid (pKa = 3.745) detected a steady-state concentration of *OH ([*OH]ss, calculated as a solution average) approximately 50 times higher than the two neutral probes did in the same systems, indicating significant enrichment of formate at the surface of the positively charged iron oxide where the *OH is being produced. Increasing the pH and ionic strength decreased formic acid oxidation rates by factors consistent with predicted decreases in electrostatic effects. In the presence of high 2-CP concentrations, the [*OH]ss measured by formic acid decreased with time, and goethite coagulation increased, due to loss of positive charge on the oxide surface as the oxidation products of 2-CP complexed surface Fe species. The [*OH]ss detected by 2-CP did not change significantly, indicating that neither goethite coagulation nor surface complexation of 2-CP oxidation products interfered with the rate of *OH generation; however, such an effect could have occurred in experiments using dissolved Fe instead of goethite. Model predictions of organic compound oxidation rates in mineral-catalyzed Fenton-like systems were improved by taking electrostatic effects into account.

Abstract:The micellization characteristics of nonionic surfactant (Triton TX-100, p-octyl polyethylene glycol phenyl ether) and two anionic surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) were investigated by surface tension measurements, steady state fluorescence tests, dynamic light scattering (DLS), H-Nuclear magnetic resonance, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The anionic SAILs were 1-ethoxycarbonyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([Etmim][C12H25SO4]) and 1-ethoxycarbonyl-3-butylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([Etbim][C12H25SO4]). CMCmix values of SAIL/TX-100 mixtures were between CMC values of individual surfactants, and decreased with the increase of the molar fraction of TX-100. The negative beta values (interaction parameter) of SAIL/TX-100 mixtures indicated good synergistic effect amid SAIL/TX100 mixtures. [Etbim][C12H25SO4] showed stronger attractive interactions than [Etmim][C12H25SO4] during SAIL/TX-100 micellization. The mixed micelles contained a larger molar fraction of TX-100 over the entire range of composition. At same molar fraction of TX-100, X-1 values of [Etbim][C12H25SO4]/TX-100 mixtures were lower than those of [Etmim][C12H25SO4]/TX-100 mixtures. With addition of SAIL, the particle sizes of SAIL/TX-100 micelles decreased. With the increase of SAIL concentrations, the particle sizes of SAIL/TX-100 micelles decreased. In presence of SAILs ([Etmim][C12H25SO4] or [Etbim][C12H25SO4]), all protons of TX-100 moved downfield. The chemical shifts of protons in [Etmim][C12H25SO4] or [Etbim][C12H25SO4] slightly moved upfield. DFT simulations demonstrated the presence of hydrogen bonds between the imidazolium cation of SAILs and EO chain of TX-100, and between sulfate anion group(-SO4-) of SAILs and hydrogen atoms in TX-100. Abstract:Two novel aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) involving protic piperazinium-based ionic liquids (ILs) and anionic surfactants were found in the 1-ethylpiperazinium tetrafluoroborate ([C2pi][BF4]) + sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) + H2O system and the 1-phenylpiperazinium tetrafluoroborate ([Phpi][BF4]) + sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) + H2O system. The ATPS regions in the ternary phase diagrams were determined, and the compositions and the microstructures of the conjugated phases were analyzed by UV-vis, (1)H NMR, DLS, and cryogenic TEM measurements. The results demonstrate size-enhanced micelles for both ATPSs. The strong electrostatic interactions between the cationic moiety of IL and the anionic surfactant play a very important role in the assembly of the large aggregates, and the cation-π interactions are involved in the [Phpi][BF4] + SDBS + H2O ATPS. In addition, the small cationic moiety of [C2pi][BF4] can be packed in the micelles, while the larger hydrophilic cationic moiety of [Phpi][BF4] makes it difficult to get into the micelles, leading to the different size enhancement effects. The driving force of phase separation is the formation and distribution of the large aggregates in the aqueous solutions. This work presents a novel nonaromatic ATPS formed by a piperazinium-based IL and an anionic surfactant, in which considerable size enhancement of aggregates takes place without the assistance of aromaticity in contrast to the other aromatic ATPSs.

Abstract:Three double-chain imidazolium ionic liquid surfactants (ILS) with varying alkyl lengths, namely [C10mimC10][OAc], [C12mimC12][OAc], and [C14mimC14][OAc], were synthesized via the one-step Debus-Radziszewskireaction. The chemical structures of these three ILS were confirmed through FT-IR, 1H NMR and ESI-MS analyses. Their surface/interface activity, wetting ability, thermal stability, and aggregation properties were investigated. The results indicated that the presence of double-chain hydrophobic groups in ILS exerted a significant influence on their surface/interface activity. Surface activity and micellization properties were assessed using surface tension measurements, revealing that the micellization process of double-chain ILS was more favorable compared to single-chain ILS. Among the three ILS examined, [C14mimC14][OAc] exhibited the lowest surface tension and critical micelle concentration (CMC) values, measuring 29.07 mN/m and 1.64 × 10-2 mmol/L, respectively. Solutions containing approximately 50 ppm of these ILS could reduce interfacial tension to below 1 mN/m. Additionally, the contact angle decreased to less than 90° within 90 s. The formation of aggregates in aqueous solutions was found to be influenced by the number of CH2 units present in the different ILS molecules.

Abstract:The electrical conductivity of ionic liquids (ILs) is an important figure of merit for any electrochemical application. In this regard, we measured electrical conductivities of N , N -dimethylethanolammonium based PILs at different temperatures from T = 293.15–323.15 K, and the results are discussed in terms of the effect of temperature, hydrophobicity, and H-bonding abilities of ions on conductivity. The investigation into alterations in the electrical conductivity of ionic liquids (ILs) in both polar protic and aprotic solvents holds significant importance for advancing the industrial applications of IL solutions. To broaden the potential applications of ILs, we conducted measurements of the specific conductivity (κ) in binary mixtures involving N , N -dimethylethanolammonium carboxylates [DMEA] [Carboxylates], a protic ionic liquids (PILs), with water, ethanol, and acetonitrile at 298.15 K. The aggregation behavior of the PILs in various solvents was studied by determining the critical aggregation concentration (CAC), and standard Gibbs energy of aggregation . The findings from studies on the electrical conductivity of mixtures involving [DMEA] [Carboxylates] with molecular solvents are analyzed with a focus on ion-solvent interactions. The discussions encompass the impact of hydrophobicity, as well as the influence of H-bonding abilities exhibited by both the ionic liquid (PIL) and the solvent on the aggregation behavior observed in the mixtures.

Abstract:Middle-phase microemulsions formed from cationic dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODMAC), anionic sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS), n-butanol, and n-heptane were studied. An ionic liquid (IL), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4]), was employed as the electrolyte in the aqueous media instead of inorganic salts usually used in microemulsion formulation. Studies have been carried out as a function of the concentrations of [bmim][BF4], n-butanol, total surfactant (cDODMAC+SDS), and temperature on the phase behavior and the ultralow interfacial tensions in which the anionic component is present in excess in the catanionic film. Ultralow interfacial tension measurements confirmed the formation of middle-phase microemulsions and the necessary conditions for stabilizing middle-phase microemulsions. Electrical conductivity, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments were also performed, indicating that the typical heptane domain size has an average radius of 360 A and the ionic liquid induces softening of the charged catanionic film. Most interestingly, the IL concentration (cIL) is shown to act as an effective interfacial curvature-control parameter, representing a new approach to tuning the formulation of microemulsions and emulsions. The results expand the potential uses of ILs but also point to the design of new ILs that may achieve superefficient control over interfacial and self-assembly systems.

Abstract:We investigated the aggregation behaviour of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl) ionic liquid at three temperatures 323 K, 333 K and 343 K using 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) chemical shift and Pulsed-Field Gradient (PFG) spin-echo NMR self-diffusion measurements. Chemical shifts of SDS protons and diffusion coefficients of SDS as a function of the surfactant concentration have breakpoints, which indicate an onset of the surfactant micellisation. We estimated the critical micelle concentration (cmc) with high accuracy from SDS methyl protons' chemical shifts and the micelles' average aggregation number from diffusion coefficients. The formation of micelles does not influence the diffusion and chemical shifts of AMIMCl.We determined water concentration in the samples from the NMR spectra. We did not find evidence that water affects the aggregation process since water content practically does not influence the SDS protons' chemical shifts and diffusion coefficients. However, water appears to influence the diffusion and chemical shifts of AMIMCl.We also investigated the behaviour of SDS in 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate (EMIMDEP) hydrophilic ionic liquid. The value of the Gordon parameter of EMIMDEP indicates that it does not possess the ability to support the self-assembly of amphiphiles. Within this work, we treat the system SDS/EMIMDEP as a reference one.SDS forms a lamellar phase in AMIMCl at high concentration, as revealed by Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Polarised Optical Microscopy (POM) investigations. At about 358 K, a transition from the lamellar phase to the isotropic liquid phase occurs. No other liquid-crystalline phase in this system was determined.

Abstract:In the literature, relatively little attention has been paid to the meaning of donor involvement in the intimate couple dyad. The current study aimed to enrich our understanding of couples' meaning-making regarding the anonymous sperm donor and how they dealt with the donor involvement. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine couples, who had at least one child conceived through sperm donation. Our thematic analysis showed that the donor conception was seen as a different path to create a normal family. Once the family was formed, most couples avoided talking about the donor because it was perceived as disrupting men's growing confidence in their position as father. Participants tried to confirm the position of the father to protect the family relationships. Uncertainties about how they were perceived as parents showed the continuing dominance of genetic ties within our social discourse. Participants also dealt with reminders of the donor in their daily life. Overall, they tried to manage the space taken up by the donor and to protect the position of the father. We relate our findings to literature on topic avoidance and shared obliviousness in families. For counseling practice, it could be useful to explore couples' meaning-making about the donor as this seemed to serve family functioning.
Influence of PIL Segment on Solution Properties of Poly(n-Isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(ionic Liquid) Copolymer: Micelles, Thermal Phase Behavior and Microdynamics

Abstract:The assembly properties, thermal phase behavior and microdynamics of poly(NIPAM-b-BVImBr), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide), in aqueous solution are investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), turbidity measurements and FTIR spectroscopy in combination with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2Dcos) and the perturbation correlation moving window (PCMW) technique. In particular, the influence of the introduction of the poly(BVImBr) segment on the solution properties of the block copolymer has attracted our attention: a core-shell micelle structure forms, consisting of a relatively hydrophobic core of poly( BVImBr) and a hydrophilic shell of PNIPAM; the phase transition temperature increases, due to one more step in the dehydration process originating from the alkyl side chains of the poly(1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide) (PIL) segment; what's more, a stronger hysteresis during the heating-cooling cycle, closely related to the recovery process, is observed. It reveals that the hydrogen bonds of C=O center dot center dot center dot D-N among the micelles formed during heating are harder to remove, thus, the reconstruction of the C=O center dot center dot center dot D-O-D hydrogen bonding and the recovery hydration process for the C-H groups during cooling are prevented due to the compact and regular micelle structure. More interestingly, the C=O groups interact with the N-D groups at room temperature because of the existence of the micelle structure, which is regarded as intra-micelle hydrogen bonding; above the LCST, hydrogen bonds of the C=O center dot center dot center dot D-N among the aggregated micelles called inter-micelle hydrogen bonding occur.

Abstract:Three direct –NSO 3 H functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquids of 2-alkyl-1,3-disulfo imidazolium chloride with varied sizes of alkyl substituents (Me-, Et-, nBu-) were utilized to explore the effects of ionic liquids on aggregation behavior of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate in aqueous media at various concentrations of ionic liquids and temperatures (288.15 K, 293.15 K, 298.15 K, 303.15 K, and 308.15 K). Critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of the IL-surfactant systems obtained from conductivity measurement were found to be in good agreement with the CMC values of surface tension and UV–visible spectroscopy techniques. These CMCs values were used to calculate the thermodynamic parameters of IL-surfactant solutions such as standard free energy of micellization (Δ G ° m ), standard enthalpy of micellization (Δ H ° m ), and standard entropy of micellization (Δ S ° m ). Continuous decrease of the CMC values was observed with increasing concentrations of the ILs as well as temperatures. Packing parameters calculated from the surface tension measurement displayed small spherical shape for all the mixed micellar systems. Structural changes of the IL-surfactant solutions were also observed using FT-IR spectroscopic method. Increased positive inductive effect (+ I) of 2-alkyl substituent of the imidazolium cation of ionic liquid showed stabilizing effect on the micelle formation by lowering of more negative zeta potential values of the IL-surfactant systems.

Abstract:The viscoelastic properties of worm-like micelles formed by mixing the cationic surfactant N-hexadecyl-N-methylpiperidinium bromide (C16MDB) with the anionic surfactant sodium laurate (SL) in aqueous solutions were investigated using rheological measurements. The effects of sodium laurate and temperature on the worm-like micelles and the mechanism of the observed shear thinning phenomenon and pseudoplastic behavior were systematically investigated. Additionally, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy images further ascertained existence of entangled worm-like micelles.
Conformational Isomerism Influence on the Properties of Piperazinium Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide

Abstract:Investigation of conformational isomerism of ring compounds can help us get a clear comprehension of the ring structure and reveal significant structure-activity relationship. In this study, conformational isomerism of the cationic moiety of ionic liquid 1-ethyl-1,4-dimethylpiperazinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2C1C1(4)pi][NTf2]) has been investigated by means of (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The energy levels for different conformations of the cationic moiety [C2C1C1(4)pi](+) are obtained via density functional theory calculations. The predominant cis-conformer in [C2C1C1(4)pi][NTf2] at its liquid state is observed under ambient conditions, where the ethyl group locates at the equatorial position of quaternary nitrogen atom, consistent with the calculated results. The trans-conformer minorities in the IL convert to the cis-conformers when [C2C1C1(4)pi][NTf2] is well crystallized. Besides, the addition of polar solvents, such as ethanol, leads to a convenient and complete transformation from the trans-form to the recognizable cis-form. The phase-transition behaviors have been measured by means of differential scanning microcalorimetry (DSC), and the DSC results can be highly affected by the initial state of the IL. Density and viscosity measurements for mixtures of [C2C1C1(4)pi][NTf2] with ethanol or 1-propanol at different temperatures T = (293.15 to 323.15) K are performed. Conformational isomerism affects the excess molar volumes of [C2C1C1(4)pi][NTf2] + alcohol systems more significantly than the viscometric property. The behaviors, as comparison, for the mixtures of 1-n-pentyl-1,4-dimethyl-piperazinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C5C1C1(4)pi][NTf2]) with ethanol are observed with the same phenomena as the common binary systems. On the basis of the experimental and calculated results of the ILs, it can be concluded that conformational isomerism in the cation of [C2C1C1(4)pi][NTf2] is quite significant, and it should be taken into account when sensitive properties are evaluated.

Abstract:In their applications, ionic liquids (ILs) exhibit many unique properties not only due to the nature of cations and anions but also due to the interaction of ILs with other components and the microstructure of ILs in the systems. That is why aggregation of ILs in solutions has been in focus of many studies. Amino acid ionic liquids (AAIL) are considered a new, more eco-friendly type of IL. The aggregation behavior of the newly synthesized 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium-based AAILs [C 10 mim] [AA] (AA = L-serine, L-threonine, L-lysine) in aqueous solutions was studied by means of densitometry at different temperatures (288.15–323.15) K and by conductometry at 298.15 K. Moreover, the viscosity of aqueous solutions of AAILs at 1.18 mol·kg −1 was determined in the temperature range (293.15–323.15) K. For comparison of the estimated characteristics, 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium ILs with halogen anions, [C 10 mim]Br and [C 10 mim]Cl, were studied. The aggregation behavior of AAILs in aqueous solutions was discussed based on the data on critical micelle concentration ( cmc ) and degree of counter-ion binding; the values of standard Gibbs energy of micellization, the apparent molar volume at the cmc , apparent molar volume in the micellar region, and the change in the apparent molar volume upon micellization were derived. The obtained results were further analyzed to understand the specificity of the self-aggregation behavior of AAILs and to discuss this effect in terms of solute–solute and solute–solvent interactions. These results can open up opportunities for potential design of new surfactants.

Abstract:The micellization behavior of the ionic liquid lauryl isoquinolinium bromide ([C 12 iQuin]Br) in aqueous solution has been assessed using surface tension, electrical conductivity, and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The results reveal that the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and constant surfactant tension ( γ cac ) are lower than that of butyl isoquinolinium bromide ([C 4 iQuin]Br), octyl isoquinolinium bromide ([C 8 iQuin]Br, and lauryl pyridinium bromide ([C 12 Pyr]Br). 1 H NMR spectra show the evidence of paralleled π -stacking of adjacent isoquinoline rings. To elucidate the effect of the π – π interactions on the aggregation process, thermodynamic parameters such as the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of aggregation have been discussed. These parameters are evaluated from the CMC with temperature by fitting these values to expressions derived from a micellization thermodynamic model. The enthalpy–entropy compensation phenomenon has been observed in the micellization process of [C 12 iQuin]Br in water, and the presence of isoquinoline cations is responsible for the decrease in the Δ H mic ∗ , compared with [C 12 Pyr]Br which has the same alkyl chain and counter-ion.
