Abstract:Gigahertz-to-terahertz spectroscopy of macromolecules in aqueous environments provides an important approach for identifying their global and transient molecular structures, as well as directly assessing hydrogen-bonding. We report dielectric properties of zwitterionic dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles in aqueous solutions over a wide frequency range, from 50 MHz to 1.12 THz. The dielectric relaxation spectra reveal different polarization mechanisms at the molecular level, reflecting the complexity of DPC micelle-water interactions. We have made a deconvolution of the spectra into different components and combined them with the effective-medium approximation to separate delicate processes of micelles in water. Our measurements demonstrate reorientational motion of the DPC surfactant head groups within the micelles, and two levels of hydration water shells, including tightly- and loosely-bound hydration water layers. From the dielectric strength of bulk water in DPC solutions, we found that the number of waters in hydration shells is approximately constant at 950 +/- 45 water molecules per micelle in DPC concentrations up to 400 mM, and it decreases after that. At terahertz frequencies, employing the effective-medium approximation, we estimate that each DPC micelle is surrounded by a tightly-bound layer of 310 +/- 45 water molecules that behave as if they are an integral part of the micelle. Combined with molecular dynamics simulations, we determine that tightly-bound waters are directly hydrogen-bonded to oxygens of DPC, while loosely-bound waters reside within 4 A of micellar atoms. The dielectric response of DPC micelles at terahertz frequencies yields, for the first time, experimental information regarding the largest-scale, lowest frequency collective motions in micelles.

Abstract:Self-assembly of ionic liquids (ILs) in solution has attracted wide attention due to their potential applications in various fields. The nature of counterions, especially aromatic counterions, will significantly affect the aggregation and morphological properties of ILs surfactants. In this paper, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are applied to study the influence of three organic and inorganic counterions (phenolate (PO − ), benzoate (BZ − ), and Cl − ) on the micellar structure of imidazolium (C 14 mim + ) based ILs surfactant in aqueous solutions. Three micelles all possess prolate shape. The PO − , BZ − , and Cl − ions hardly affect the orientation and length of hydrophobic chains in micellar interior. Hydration numbers and average radial density distributions analyses show that interactions between micelles and water molecules are different in studied micelles. Surrounding water molecules penetrate into the deepest region in [C 14 mim][Cl] micelle. However, adsorbed Cl − ions are mainly located on micellar surface, not penetrating into micellar interior. Due to the intrinsic hydrophobicity of organic ions, both PO − and BZ − ions enter into deeper positions in micelles. Unlike Cl − ions, there exist π-interactions between adsorbed PO − and BZ − ions themselves. One interesting finding is that adsorbed PO − and BZ − ions can make micelle radius ( R g ) increase but make solvent accessible surface area (SASA) decrease. Conversely, adsorbed Cl − ions make both R g and SASA increase. Three MD models for different C 14 mim + based micelles are proposed.

Abstract:We investigated the aggregation behaviour of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (AMIMCl) ionic liquid at three temperatures 323 K, 333 K and 343 K using 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) chemical shift and Pulsed-Field Gradient (PFG) spin-echo NMR self-diffusion measurements. Chemical shifts of SDS protons and diffusion coefficients of SDS as a function of the surfactant concentration have breakpoints, which indicate an onset of the surfactant micellisation. We estimated the critical micelle concentration (cmc) with high accuracy from SDS methyl protons' chemical shifts and the micelles' average aggregation number from diffusion coefficients. The formation of micelles does not influence the diffusion and chemical shifts of AMIMCl.We determined water concentration in the samples from the NMR spectra. We did not find evidence that water affects the aggregation process since water content practically does not influence the SDS protons' chemical shifts and diffusion coefficients. However, water appears to influence the diffusion and chemical shifts of AMIMCl.We also investigated the behaviour of SDS in 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate (EMIMDEP) hydrophilic ionic liquid. The value of the Gordon parameter of EMIMDEP indicates that it does not possess the ability to support the self-assembly of amphiphiles. Within this work, we treat the system SDS/EMIMDEP as a reference one.SDS forms a lamellar phase in AMIMCl at high concentration, as revealed by Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and Polarised Optical Microscopy (POM) investigations. At about 358 K, a transition from the lamellar phase to the isotropic liquid phase occurs. No other liquid-crystalline phase in this system was determined.

Abstract:The micellization behavior of the ionic liquid lauryl isoquinolinium bromide ([C 12 iQuin]Br) in aqueous solution has been assessed using surface tension, electrical conductivity, and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The results reveal that the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and constant surfactant tension ( γ cac ) are lower than that of butyl isoquinolinium bromide ([C 4 iQuin]Br), octyl isoquinolinium bromide ([C 8 iQuin]Br, and lauryl pyridinium bromide ([C 12 Pyr]Br). 1 H NMR spectra show the evidence of paralleled π -stacking of adjacent isoquinoline rings. To elucidate the effect of the π – π interactions on the aggregation process, thermodynamic parameters such as the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of aggregation have been discussed. These parameters are evaluated from the CMC with temperature by fitting these values to expressions derived from a micellization thermodynamic model. The enthalpy–entropy compensation phenomenon has been observed in the micellization process of [C 12 iQuin]Br in water, and the presence of isoquinoline cations is responsible for the decrease in the Δ H mic ∗ , compared with [C 12 Pyr]Br which has the same alkyl chain and counter-ion.
Influence of electrostatics on the oxidation rates of organic compounds in heterogeneous Fenton systems.

Abstract:Electrostatic effects influence the oxidation rates of charged dissolved organic compounds in systems where the hydroxyl radical (*OH) is produced by the iron oxide-catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Experiments were performed using goethite and the *OH probes 14C-labeled formic acid, 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), and nitrobenzene. At pH 4 and an ionic strength of 0.01 M, formic acid (pKa = 3.745) detected a steady-state concentration of *OH ([*OH]ss, calculated as a solution average) approximately 50 times higher than the two neutral probes did in the same systems, indicating significant enrichment of formate at the surface of the positively charged iron oxide where the *OH is being produced. Increasing the pH and ionic strength decreased formic acid oxidation rates by factors consistent with predicted decreases in electrostatic effects. In the presence of high 2-CP concentrations, the [*OH]ss measured by formic acid decreased with time, and goethite coagulation increased, due to loss of positive charge on the oxide surface as the oxidation products of 2-CP complexed surface Fe species. The [*OH]ss detected by 2-CP did not change significantly, indicating that neither goethite coagulation nor surface complexation of 2-CP oxidation products interfered with the rate of *OH generation; however, such an effect could have occurred in experiments using dissolved Fe instead of goethite. Model predictions of organic compound oxidation rates in mineral-catalyzed Fenton-like systems were improved by taking electrostatic effects into account.

Abstract:In the literature, relatively little attention has been paid to the meaning of donor involvement in the intimate couple dyad. The current study aimed to enrich our understanding of couples' meaning-making regarding the anonymous sperm donor and how they dealt with the donor involvement. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine couples, who had at least one child conceived through sperm donation. Our thematic analysis showed that the donor conception was seen as a different path to create a normal family. Once the family was formed, most couples avoided talking about the donor because it was perceived as disrupting men's growing confidence in their position as father. Participants tried to confirm the position of the father to protect the family relationships. Uncertainties about how they were perceived as parents showed the continuing dominance of genetic ties within our social discourse. Participants also dealt with reminders of the donor in their daily life. Overall, they tried to manage the space taken up by the donor and to protect the position of the father. We relate our findings to literature on topic avoidance and shared obliviousness in families. For counseling practice, it could be useful to explore couples' meaning-making about the donor as this seemed to serve family functioning.
Dielectric relaxation of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate/TX-100/toluene microemulsions: Structure transition, percolation mechanism, interfacial polarization and electrical properties of microdroplets

Abstract:The dielectric relaxation spectra of the non-aqueous ionic liquid (IL) microemulsions composed of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([bmim][BF4])/p-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)phenoxypolyoxyethyleneglycol (TX-100)/toluene were obtained, the measured frequency is between 1 MHz and 3 GHz. A unique dielectric relaxation located at 10–100 MHz was observed. The direct current (dc) conductivity data were obtained from the total dielectric loss. Near the percolation transition, weight fraction dependence of dc conductivity and static dielectric constant, frequency dependence of permittivity and loss angle all suggest that static percolation occurs in this hydrophilic IL microemulsion. Phase boundaries of IL-in-toluene (IL/O), bicontinuous (B.C.) and toluene-in-IL (O/IL) subregions were determined by the inflection points in the dependent curve of relaxation parameters varied with weight fraction. The mechanism of this dielectric relaxation is attributed to the interfacial polarization of droplets by analyzing relaxation time with Maxwell-Wagner theory. The phase parameters, which reflect the interior properties of the spherical dispersed particle, were calculated by Hanai theory. The dependence of phase parameters on the variation of sample composition was properly explained. For O/IL subregion, the continuous phase should be an IL/TX-100 binary solvent rather than the pure IL. For IL/O subregions, a certain amount of toluene was dissolved in the droplets.

Abstract:Applications of a new model for predicting power threaded-fastener-driving tool operator response and capacity to react against impulsive torque reaction forces are explored for use in tool selection and ergonomic workplace design. The model is based on a mechanical analog of the human operator, with parameters dependent on work location (horizontal and vertical distances); work orientation (horizontal and vertical); and tool shape (in-line, pistol grip, and right angle); and is stratified by gender. This model enables prediction of group means and variances of handle displacement and force for a given tool configuration. Response percentiles can be ascertained for specific tool operations. For example, a sample pistol grip nutrunner used on a horizontal surface at 30 cm in front of the ankles and 140 cm above the floor results in a predicted mean handle reaction displacement of 39.0 (SD = 28.1) mm for males. Consequently 63% of the male users exceed a 30 mm handle displacement limit. When a right angle tool of similar torque output is used instead, the model predicted that only 4.6% of the male tool users exceed a 30 mm handle displacement. A method is described for interpolating individual subject model parameters at any given work location using linear combinations in relation to the range of modeled factors. Additional examples pertinent to ergonomic workstation design and tool selection are provided to demonstrate how the model can be used to aid tool selection and workstation design.

Abstract:The electrical conductivity of ionic liquids (ILs) is an important figure of merit for any electrochemical application. In this regard, we measured electrical conductivities of N , N -dimethylethanolammonium based PILs at different temperatures from T = 293.15–323.15 K, and the results are discussed in terms of the effect of temperature, hydrophobicity, and H-bonding abilities of ions on conductivity. The investigation into alterations in the electrical conductivity of ionic liquids (ILs) in both polar protic and aprotic solvents holds significant importance for advancing the industrial applications of IL solutions. To broaden the potential applications of ILs, we conducted measurements of the specific conductivity (κ) in binary mixtures involving N , N -dimethylethanolammonium carboxylates [DMEA] [Carboxylates], a protic ionic liquids (PILs), with water, ethanol, and acetonitrile at 298.15 K. The aggregation behavior of the PILs in various solvents was studied by determining the critical aggregation concentration (CAC), and standard Gibbs energy of aggregation . The findings from studies on the electrical conductivity of mixtures involving [DMEA] [Carboxylates] with molecular solvents are analyzed with a focus on ion-solvent interactions. The discussions encompass the impact of hydrophobicity, as well as the influence of H-bonding abilities exhibited by both the ionic liquid (PIL) and the solvent on the aggregation behavior observed in the mixtures.

Abstract:yy Two anionic surface active ionic liquids (SAILs), 3-methyl-1-ethoxycarbonylimidazolium decanesulfonate ([Etmim][C10H21SO3]) and 3-methyl-1-ethoxycarbonylimidazolium dodecanesulfonate ([Etmim] [C12H25SO3]) were synthesized and studied. The surface properties, aggregation properties and thermodynamic parameters of [Etmim][C10H21SO3] and [Etmim][C12H25SO3] aqueous solutions were determined using surface tension and electrical conductivity. Micelle formation of [Etmim][C10H21SO3] and [Etmim][C12H25SO3] was spontaneous and entropy-driven. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation was used to optimize the configuration of the anions (C10H21SO3, and C12H25SO3), imidazolium cation ([Etmim](+)), and SAILs ([Etmim][C10H21SO3] or [Etmim] [C12H25SO3]) with different number of water molecules (1-3) using Gaussian 16 at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. Typical hydrogen bonds, bond length changes, bond angle changes, and charge changes of typical atoms in hydrated complexes were analyzed. For imidazolium cation hydrates, H2O formed two types of hydrogen bonds with cation ([Etmim](+)). For sulfonate anion hydrates, H2O formed two types of hydrogen bonds with anions ([C10H21SO3]- or [C12H25SO3]-). Hydrogen atoms in H2O formed hydrogen bonds with oxygen atoms of polar sulfonate anions in three ways: 1:1, 2:1, and 2:1. The typical electron withdrawing atoms (N and O) in imidazolium cation was beneficial for the micelles formation. The electrostatic repulsion and electrostatic attractive interaction between polar groups of SAILs affected the CMC values of [Etmim][C10H21SO3] or [Etmim][C12H25SO3] aqueous solutions. Binding energy (D-0), difference of binding energy (Delta D-0) of sulfonate ion hydrates and SAIL hydrates confirmed the tendency of [Etmim][C12H25SO3] micelle formation was higher than that of [Etmim][C10H21SO3]. Abstract:In this work, two imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with different cations including dication (DIL) and monocation (MIL) were blended with Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO). The influence of ILs' structure cations on structural and dynamic properties in PEO/ILs system was investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and density functional theory (DFT) methods. The simulation results show that DIL exhibits weaker interaction with PEO than MIL due to stronger IL aggregation effect. The intermolecular interaction also makes PEO chain tend to organize around the imidazolium ring of ILs, which causes the conformational entropy loss. Compared with PEO/MIL, this phenomenon is more significant in PEO/DIL because of the double positive centers of dication and longer hydrogen bond lifetime. MD simulation also demonstrates DIL could act as "crosslinkers" to promote the formation of physical crosslinking network which has strong dependence on the concentration of IL. The competition of physical crosslinking and plasticizing effect induces the non-monotonic variations of relaxation time in PEO/DIL, which is consistent with its unusual change of the glass transition temperature (Tg). Despite stronger hydrogen bonding interactions between PEO and MIL demonstrated by atom-in-molecules (AIM) and reduced density gradient (RDG) analysis, the segmental mobility is slower in PEO/DIL according to MSDs curve. These difference of multiple structural or energetic factors finally produce different conductive mechanism and hence obtain different ionic conductivity.

Abstract:Three direct –NSO 3 H functionalized Brønsted acidic ionic liquids of 2-alkyl-1,3-disulfo imidazolium chloride with varied sizes of alkyl substituents (Me-, Et-, nBu-) were utilized to explore the effects of ionic liquids on aggregation behavior of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate in aqueous media at various concentrations of ionic liquids and temperatures (288.15 K, 293.15 K, 298.15 K, 303.15 K, and 308.15 K). Critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) of the IL-surfactant systems obtained from conductivity measurement were found to be in good agreement with the CMC values of surface tension and UV–visible spectroscopy techniques. These CMCs values were used to calculate the thermodynamic parameters of IL-surfactant solutions such as standard free energy of micellization (Δ G ° m ), standard enthalpy of micellization (Δ H ° m ), and standard entropy of micellization (Δ S ° m ). Continuous decrease of the CMC values was observed with increasing concentrations of the ILs as well as temperatures. Packing parameters calculated from the surface tension measurement displayed small spherical shape for all the mixed micellar systems. Structural changes of the IL-surfactant solutions were also observed using FT-IR spectroscopic method. Increased positive inductive effect (+ I) of 2-alkyl substituent of the imidazolium cation of ionic liquid showed stabilizing effect on the micelle formation by lowering of more negative zeta potential values of the IL-surfactant systems.

Abstract:Water molecules, present as additive or as contaminant of Protic Ionic Liquids (PILs), can compete for the hydrogen bond sites leading to important modifications of the local order of these liquids and to the modulation of their physical–chemical properties. In this work, aqueous solutions of a set of N-methylimidazolium-based PILs [MIM][X] (X = NO 3 − , TfO − , HSO 4 − , and Cl − ) were investigated by deep UV Resonance Raman (UVRR) spectroscopy in the water-rich domain where ionic aggregates and bulk-like water coexist. A differential method was used to analyze the OH stretching profile to extract the so-called solute-correlated (SC) spectrum, which is particular informative of the hydration features of the PILs. Moreover, specific bands of the cation, sensitive to the hydrogen bonding, were comparatively investigated. The progressive evolution from solvent-separated ion pairs (SIP) and/or solvent-shared ion pairs (SSIP) to contact ion pairs (CIP) and/or larger ionic aggregates can be monitored as a function of the hydration level, in the water-rich domain. Our approach showed that, in the high-diluted regime, the hydration environment around the [MIM] cation does not depend on the type of anion. Moreover, [MIM][NO 3 ] and [MIM][TfO] showed cation-water (ionic) H-bonds at the NH site stronger than the cation–anion (double-ionic) ones. The analysis of SC Raman spectra points out the formation of cation–anion H-bonds (through the CH ring groups), stronger than cation-water ones, upon PILs concentration increase, especially evident in the case of [MIM][Cl]. The H-bond strength between the anion and hydration water is found to decrease following the order: [Cl] ∼ [HSO 4 ] > [NO 3 ] > [TfO]. Chloride ions tend to perturb a larger number of water molecules than the other anions. The number of perturbed water molecules decreases at increasing PIL concentration, showing a larger dependence for [MIM][Cl], consistently with its larger propensity to form ionic aggregates. The unique response of [MIM][Cl] to hydration found by analyzing SC-UVRR data is related to the synergy of different factors such as the anion reduced size (higher charge density), spherical symmetry, and high H-bond basicity.

Imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquid)/ionic liquid solutions: Rheology, structuration and ionic transport properties

Abstract:RAFT-made poly(ionic liquid) chains (PIL), poly(1-[2-acryloylethyl]-3-methylimidazolium bromide) (Poly [AEmim][Br]), have been mixed with a ionic liquid (IL), namely butylmethylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim][Cl].) The similarities in terms of structure and polarity of these molecular and macromolecular imidazolium derivatives led to homogeneous and transparent solutions. The influence of the chain molar mass and the concentration was examined through rheology investigation. It was established that the steady-shear viscosity of the solutions, and the viscoelastic properties can be finely tuned by these two parameters and by temperature. The thermal-dependence of the rheological features allowed for determining high activation energies (E a ) (around 80 kJ/mol), compared to analogous PIL aqueous solutions. Such E a values reflect high cohesion in PIL/IL solutions, related to the formation of multiple strong interactions, such as hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces and Coulomb interactions between ionic species. Wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering experiments as well as scanning electron microscopy analysis evidenced a multi-scale local homogeneity of the PIL/IL solutions, which additionally exhibit high ionic conductivity (ca. 10−3 S/cm at 30 °C), as measured by broadband dielectric spectroscopy.

Abstract:The micellization characteristics of nonionic surfactant (Triton TX-100, p-octyl polyethylene glycol phenyl ether) and two anionic surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) were investigated by surface tension measurements, steady state fluorescence tests, dynamic light scattering (DLS), H-Nuclear magnetic resonance, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The anionic SAILs were 1-ethoxycarbonyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([Etmim][C12H25SO4]) and 1-ethoxycarbonyl-3-butylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([Etbim][C12H25SO4]). CMCmix values of SAIL/TX-100 mixtures were between CMC values of individual surfactants, and decreased with the increase of the molar fraction of TX-100. The negative beta values (interaction parameter) of SAIL/TX-100 mixtures indicated good synergistic effect amid SAIL/TX100 mixtures. [Etbim][C12H25SO4] showed stronger attractive interactions than [Etmim][C12H25SO4] during SAIL/TX-100 micellization. The mixed micelles contained a larger molar fraction of TX-100 over the entire range of composition. At same molar fraction of TX-100, X-1 values of [Etbim][C12H25SO4]/TX-100 mixtures were lower than those of [Etmim][C12H25SO4]/TX-100 mixtures. With addition of SAIL, the particle sizes of SAIL/TX-100 micelles decreased. With the increase of SAIL concentrations, the particle sizes of SAIL/TX-100 micelles decreased. In presence of SAILs ([Etmim][C12H25SO4] or [Etbim][C12H25SO4]), all protons of TX-100 moved downfield. The chemical shifts of protons in [Etmim][C12H25SO4] or [Etbim][C12H25SO4] slightly moved upfield. DFT simulations demonstrated the presence of hydrogen bonds between the imidazolium cation of SAILs and EO chain of TX-100, and between sulfate anion group(-SO4-) of SAILs and hydrogen atoms in TX-100. The information will shed light on the rapid screening of novel anionic SAIL/surfactant mixtures for practical applications. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of various additives on the properties of aqueous surfactant solutions is profoundly significant because of numerous applications of surfactant-based frameworks. Thus, the aggregation behavior of conventional cationic surfactants dodecyl trimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and dodecyl trimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) has been investigated in the absence and presence of (0.05, 0.10, and 0.15) wt.% ionic liquids (ILs) 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide [C3mim][Br] and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide [C4mim][Br] in aqueous medium at different temperatures (298.15, 303.15, and 308.15) K. The values of critical micelle concentration (CMC) have been evaluated for various IL/surfactant systems by employing three different techniques such as conductivity, fluorescence, and UV–VIS spectroscopy. The thermodynamic parameters of micellization have been ascertained utilizing these CMC values, determined by various techniques. Thermodynamic parameters like standard free energy, standard enthalpy, and standard entropy of micellization were examined in terms of driving force behind the process of micellization. These parameters revealed that the addition of ILs modifies the aggregation properties of DTAB and DTAC.Graphical

Abstract:This work reports the study of the anion effect on the aggregation behavior of the long-chain spacers of dicationic imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) in a 4.75 % (v/v) ethanol-water solution as well as in ethanol (95 %). The anions studied were Br−, NO3−, BF4−, SCN− and NTf2−. Aggregation behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), conductivity, surface tension, and fluorescence. In the ethanol-water solution, the critical aggregation concentration (CAC), free energy aggregation (∆G°a), and the ionization degree (α) all significantly decreased with the increase in anion hydrophobicity. In ethanol, the CAC and ∆G°a values also decreased with the increase in anion size and hydrophobicity. The free energy adsorption (∆G°ads) data showed that the dicationic ILs have good surfactant activity, and this property improved with the decrease in the hydration radius of the anions. Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are potential green solvents with very broad application prospects. Their toxicity and other biological effects are largely related to their hydrophobic properties. In this work, the effects of two imidazolium-based ILs with either a butyl or a hexyl chain, [C(4)mim][OAc] or [C(6)mim][OAc], on the phase behaviours of a representative phospholipid, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), were examined using synchrotron small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. A series of samples with a lipid : IL molar ratio ranging from 1 : 0 to 1 : 4/1 : 5 were prepared as aqueous dispersions in the form of multi-lamellar vesicles. The two ILs were found to have distinct effects on the phase behaviours of DPPC. For [C(4)mim][OAc], its effect is very limited. In contrast, for [C(6)mim][OAc], it could eliminate the pre-transition of DPPC, markedly affect the main phase transition of the lipid, and insert into the DPPC bilayer at gel state to form an interdigitated gel phase. The findings increased our understanding on the biological effects of imidazolium-based ILs and might shed light on the design of novel IL-based antimicrobials.
