Abstract:Farmland birds are among the most threatened species in Europe, largely as a result of the intensification of agriculture leading to widespread biodiversity losses. Ground-breeding shorebirds in grassland and arable habitats are particularly exposed to human threats and predation in highly modified landscapes; however, parts of their populations still breed in natural habitats and could provide a reservoir for threatened populations. This study aimed to improve our knowledge of the spatio-temporal use of breeding habitats by Eurasian curlew Numenius arquata arquata in a core area of the population in remote north-eastern Europe. A total of 83 adult birds across Europe were tagged with GPS devices between 2014 and 2022 to analyse their home-range sizes, habitat use and hatching success. Birds were distributed at breeding sites from 52°N to 66°N between Finland and the Ural Mountains. Forty-one percent of individuals nested in bogs, 33% in grassland, and 20% in abandoned farmland. Birds nested predominantly in bogs at northern latitudes and in grassland at southern latitudes, while abandoned farmland was mainly used at intermediate latitudes. The mean home range was largest for birds breeding predominantly in grassland while birds in bogs had the highest hatching success rate. Russia and Finland host the core population of the subspecies N. a. arquata during breeding period, which is essential for preserving the species on a European scale. Their survival may depend on well-preserved bogs and the maintenance of grassland areas, given that large areas of abandoned farmland are destined to become either forest or to be reclaimed for cereal crops or fodder grass in the short and medium terms. Given the large breeding populations in both countries, Russia and Finland have major responsibilities to maintain these essential populations on a biogeographical scale.

Abstract:Summary As a result of increasingly intensified agricultural practices in Europe over the last century, agroecosystems have experienced severe biodiversity declines. Among the species experiencing negative population trajectories in agricultural habitats are meadow and farmland birds, which have suffered a loss in both habitat and food availability in cultivated fields. In Denmark, biotope plans (a requirement to establish small agro-environmental habitats on properties with stocking of game birds) have been implemented as a measure to mitigate biodiversity declines in the agricultural landscape and, in this paper, we investigate to what extent these initiatives fulfil the intended purpose with respect to birds in the breeding season. We demonstrate that some initiatives like hedgerows, areas of open vegetation, scrub, and lakes seemed to increase avian diversity locally, but also that other measures such as vegetation strips, grass strips, and bare soil strips had little effect given the current implementation of these initiatives. Benefitting species were mostly scrub- and woodland species that now inhabited previously open landscapes after the establishment of suitable habitats, and the initiatives failed to show clear positive effects on meadow birds and farmland birds for which they were originally intended. The most commonly registered species in our data set was (released) Pheasant Phasianus colchicus, which emphasised that the stocking of game birds can have a clear effect on avian species composition in areas where this practice is exercised. Future studies are needed to clarify how this stocking may affect local biodiversity of different taxonomic groups.

Use of linear features by red-legged partridges in an intensive agricultural landscape: implications for landscape management in farmland

Abstract:Current agricultural practices and change are the major cause of biodiversity loss. An important change associated with the intensification of agriculture in the last 50 years is the spatial homogenization of the landscape with substantial loss of such biodiversity-rich elements as seminatural linear features (hedgerows, field margins, grassy strips, etc.). In Europe, some management prescriptions serve to increase heterogeneity by the creation of these seminatural linear features which are not being used primarily for agricultural production. However, these elements are not equal in their support for biodiversity according to their structure and composition. The aim of this study is to determine the importance of landscape heterogeneity and specifically linear features on the spatial distribution of red-legged partridges, a small game species in decline in Europe. Through GPS-monitoring of adult birds, we first assess home range size throughout the year and during the breeding season, in relation to breeding status and to linear features (seminatural linear vegetation and tracks-roads for human traffic) density. Then, we focus on habitat selection during the breeding period in relation to linear features. We found that linear elements shape the use of space by red-legged partridges according to their reproductive status. Traffic routes and seminatural features structured by both herbaceous and woody cover, negatively influenced home range size. Further, breeding birds select linear elements with herbaceous cover while non-breeders select linear elements with woody cover, underlining the different needs of birds according to their breeding status. All birds selected areas near tracks, but non-breeders seemed to avoid roads. This study shows the importance for this species of the linear components that structure the agricultural landscape. We propose recommendations to promote the presence of the red-legged partridge in this agricultural environment but also of the biodiversity in general.

Abstract:Capsule Diet composition and feeding behaviour of breeding birds differed between areas of high and low agricultural intensification. Aims To analyze diet composition and feeding behaviour of Marsh Harriers Circus aeruginosus in agricultural landscapes with different degrees of agricultural intensification. Methods Diet composition and feeding behaviour was assessed by focal observations at nests during breeding seasons in 2001–03 in two agricultural areas within the eastern Ebro Basin (on the northern Iberian Peninsula) which differed in their degree of agricultural intensification: a traditional non-irrigated and non-intensively managed farmland area; and an irrigated and intensively managed farmland area. Results Marsh Harriers in the intensively managed area took higher percentages of small mammals than harriers in the traditional area managed at low-intensity, where they also had a more diverse diet. Male delivery rates increased throughout the breeding season in the intensively managed area. On the contrary, no significant trend in delivery rates was observed in the traditional area, where harriers turned to larger prey late in the season. Conclusion Marsh Harriers probably took advantage of different prey types in intensively managed and traditional farmland according to prey availability. Differences in diet composition seem to be related to different foraging strategies adopted by harriers in traditional and intensively managed farmlands. In the traditionally managed farmlands, harriers responded to increases in the energy requirements of the brood over the course of the breeding season by taking larger prey, whereas in the intensively managed farmlands harriers increased feeding rates.

Abstract:Agricultural intensification and climate change are serious threats toward animal populations worldwide. Agricultural intensification reduces the heterogeneity of agricultural habitats by diminishing crop variation and destroying microhabitats, such as small woody features, whereas the effects of climate change range from the growing frequency of weather extremes to disrupted prey–predator dynamics. We collected long-term ringing data from a population of Eurasian kestrels ( Falco tinnunculus ) located amidst agricultural areas in western Finland during 1985–2021, which we combined with density indices of their main prey species (voles), spatial data consisting of land cover classification of kestrel territories, and weather data, to study the effects of different environmental drivers on breeding density and success. We found that the density of inhabited nests rose with vole abundance and springtime snow depth, with the overall trend of population growth being stronger in areas with more heterogeneous landscapes. Clutch size was influenced negatively by the age of male parent and landscape heterogeneity, and positively by vole abundance, with rainfall having a negative influence conditional to other variables. Likewise, the number of produced fledglings was affected by male age, but it was additionally positively associated with landscape heterogeneity and its interaction with rainfall, with greater fledgling output in heterogeneous landscapes during high precipitation. The discrepancy between factors predicting large clutches and high numbers of fledglings suggests that while kestrels do not prefer heterogeneous landscapes when prospecting for territories, heterogeneous habitats provide better circumstances for foraging during the nestling period, which ensures nestling survival, particularly during adverse environmental conditions. Therefore, breeding in areas under intense agricultural use is more suboptimal to kestrels than their territory preferences would indicate. As changing climate may reduce prey availability and heighten the probability of weather extremities, agricultural intensification may lead to weaker reproductive success in densely populated farmland habitats.

Abstract:We studied foraging habitat use and selection of the Western Marsh-Harrier (Circus aeruginosus) in agricultural areas, by radio-tracking seven individuals in the Ebro Basin (northern Iberian Peninsula). Generalized Linear Mixed Models indicated that the probability that a certain point within the study area was used by harriers was influenced by both distance to the nesting site and habitat. Probability of occurrence decreased with the distance to the nesting site and increased in wetlands and herbaceous crops (both those with high-intensity agricultural practices and those with low-intensity agriculture). In areas dominated by high-intensity herbaceous crops (irrigated maize, cereal, and alfalfa), marsh-harriers (n 2) did not use all crop types equally throughout the year; they selected different crops in relation to the crop stage (growing, fallow, and stubble) and to particular agricultural practices (irrigated, unirrigated).

Abstract:Agri-environmental schemes (AES) implemented by farmer collectives for meadow bird protection in The Netherlands create complex landscape mosaics due to the variability of options and combinations farmers use. We propose a method to simplify this complexity, using the number of meadow birds potentially benefiting as the measure of success, and evaluate how AES combinations affect management success as a function of monetary investments. Between 2016 and 2022, we conducted field surveys to measure the density and distribution of Black-tailed Godwits across three land-use types: AES, site-protected areas, and intensive agriculture. AES fields were categorized into nest protection, inundation, delayed mowing, and herb-rich grasslands. We analysed the relationship between these managements, the area they cover, and godwit numbers, while also examining land area and subsidies. Intensive agriculture covered 74.3 % of the area but hosted only 23.2 % of the godwit population at low densities (0.063 godwits/ha). In contrast, protected areas (6.2 % of the area) and AES fields (19.5 %) supported 24.7 % and 52.1 % of the population at higher densities (0.48 and 0.46 godwits/ha, respectively). Among AES types, delayed mowing and herb-rich grasslands showed the highest godwit densities (0.66 and 1.25 godwits/ha, respectively) covering smaller areas (6 % and 1.1 %). These AES types pay the highest subsidies, while nest protection, covering 10.5 % of the area with lower godwit densities, pays the lowest. Although AES fields hosted about half of the godwit population, area-wise the focus remained on nest protection, and with intensive agriculture dominated the landscape. This may limit effectiveness at a population level, calling for re-evaluating conservation priorities and funding.

Abstract:During 2002–2005 we analyzed Lack’s Hypothesis about the timing of the breeding of marsh harriers (Circus aeruginosus) in the Poodří to the breeding period and preference of heterogeneous habitat. An analysis of 43 nests revealed quantitative differences. Birds which started breeding earlier, reached significantly higher reproductive success than later breeding birds regardless of nesting habitat (P = 0.003, n nests = 43). Even when the birds invested into their offspring the same way, their breeding success was not always the same. When the females nested in the common reed (Phragmites communis), they reached higher reproductive output than females nesting in cattail (Typha sp.) (P = 0.01, n cattail = 18, n common reed = 25). The habitat of the common reed is characterized by higher and denser vegetation cover than cattail vegetation (P < 0.001, n measurements = 174 for both variables).

Factors affecting the reproductive performance of barbary partridges in cereal croplands of Northwestern Morocco: the role of timing of breeding and vegetation cover at fine-scale

Abstract:In Morocco, the barbary partridge (Alectoris barbara) is the major game species, highly valued by the nation's hunters. Until recently little was known about factors affecting reproductive parameters of this species on cereal croplands in North Africa. In 2018, 51 nests were found and analyzed across two agricultural areas of Northwestrn Morocco (AGR1 and AGR2). In this work, I assessed the relevance of a set of environmental and anthropogenic variables in predicting the clutch size and number of chicks hatched per nest, by means of generalised linear mixed models (GLMM). The average clutch size and hatching success per nest were 12.26 (± 0.57) and 9.26 (± 0.95), respectively. In the two sites, clutch-size increased as the date advanced, but was significantly larger in AGR1 (13.17 ± 0.84, n = 26) than in AGR2 (11.20 ± 0.70, n = 25). The number of chicks hatched per nest increased over time but also with the increase of the vegetation cover at fine-scale. Barbary partridge reproductive parameters were neither affected by landscape nor anthropogenic variables. I discuss these findings and their ecological, and future research implications. I recommended to pursuit the investigations, while considering imperatively the age/sex ratios and predation pressure.

Effects of created habitats on farmland biodiversity

Abstract:Agricultural intensification has caused severe declines among biodiversity in European farmland over the last half century. The transformation of the agricultural landscape has led to reduced availability of key resources such as food, nesting habitat and shelter. In this thesis I have investigated a way of ameliorating the negative effects of agricultural intensification, through the creation of wildlife habitats. I have also studied the effects of organic farming and increasing the amount of ley in the landscape as means to reduce farming intensity. I have tested the effects of these interventions in different landscape contexts, on a range of biodiversity, and at different spatial scales. I found that sown flower strips were able to increase abundances of bumblebees across the landscape, i.e. outside of the created habitat itself. An important finding that demonstrates that created habitats can generate real increases in abundance and do not simply redistribute organisms as a response to attractive food patches. A similar result was found for seed-eating passerines in winter, the density of which was increased in landscapes that contained wild bird cover. The effect was only evident within the 250 m closest to the wild bird cover, but it was not caused by an attraction of birds from the surrounding landscape, at least not at intermediate scales. The effect was also consistent through the survey period, in mid- to late winter. Created habitats did not seem able to increase abundances of three game species (grey partridge, common pheasant, brown hare). There may be several reasons for this relating to the quantity and quality of the habitats created, but also to other factors that were outside the scope of these studies, such as predation and reduced genetic quality. Instead I found a strong negative effect on hares of the amount of ley within the landscape, which could be caused by higher mortality among leverets in ley fields. Organic farming appeared positive for hares but only in landscapes with high crop diversity. My understanding of this is limited but I offer some speculative explanations. Although a high level of biodiversity is generally positively related to landscape heterogeneity, I found no clear effects of landscape heterogeneity on the organisms studied. To conclude, I found that created habitats have the potential to be multi-functional and benefit several organism simultaneously. The specific requirements of different organisms as well as local conditions must however be considered when drawing up a conservation plan. More research into the design and implementation of interventions is necessary to ensure conservation is based on rigorous scientific evidence.

Abstract:Although ex situ conservation programs are increasingly valuable support tools for in situ conservation measures, success depends on these captive individuals to be genetically representative of the recipient population. The Eurasian stone-curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus) inhabit steppes that represent some of the most degraded and exploited habitats worldwide. A captive breeding program was implemented in Morocco as a pre-emptive effort for the conservation of the North African subspecies Burhinus oedicnemus saharae. However, the genetic origins of the founders of the captive flock were unknown. We applied a multi-locus approach to characterize the genetic ancestry of the current captive breeding flock by comparing it to wild populations from both Western and Eastern Morocco. Mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite markers were employed to assess levels of genetic diversity and relatedness within each sample, as well as potential genetic differentiation between wild and captive samples through PCA and admixture analyses. We recovered similar genetic diversity estimates, low levels of relatedness, and little differentiation between captive and wild samples. These results confirmed the Moroccan origin of the founders. We provide recommendations for the optimization of the Eurasian Stone Curlew conservation breeding program but also for future conservation breeding programs to ensure the effective conservation of genetic diversity and wild populations.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Background</h3><p class="Para">Selecting high-quality habitat and the optimal time to reproduce can increase individual fitness and is a strong evolutionary factor shaping animal populations. However, few studies have investigated the interplay between land cover heterogeneity, limitation in food resources, individual quality and spatial variation in fitness parameters. Here, we explore how individuals of different quality respond to possible mismatches between a cue for prey availability (land cover heterogeneity) and the actual fluctuating prey abundance.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results</h3><p class="Para">We analyse timing of breeding and reproductive success in a migratory population of Eurasian kestrels (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Falco tinnunculus</em>) breeding in nest-boxes, over a full three-year abundance cycle of main prey (voles), and consider several components of individual quality, including body condition, blood parasite infection, and genetic diversity (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">n</em> = 448 adults) that act on different time scales. Older individuals, and kestrel parents in higher body condition started egg-laying earlier than younger birds and those in lower body condition. Additionally, egg-laying was initiated earlier during the increase and decrease phases (2011 and 2012) than during the low phase of the vole cycle (2013). Nestling survival (ratio of eggs that fledged successfully) was higher in early nests and in heterogeneous landscapes (i.e., mosaic of different habitat types), which was evident during the increase and decrease phases of the vole cycle, but not during the low vole year.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">We found a strong positive effect of landscape heterogeneity on nestling survival, but only when voles were relatively abundant, whereas a difference in the timing of breeding related to territory landscape heterogeneity was not evident. Therefore, landscape heterogeneity appeared as the main driver of high reproductive performance under favourable food conditions. Our results show that landscape homogenization linked to agricultural intensification disrupts the expected positive effect of vole abundance on reproductive success of kestrels.</p>

Spatial and temporal variation in farmland bird nesting ecology: Implications for effective Corn Bunting Emberiza calandra conservation

Abstract:Farmland bird populations continue to decline despite intense conservation efforts, possibly also because of incomplete knowledge on the drivers of local productivity. We therefore investigated spatial and temporal variation in nest site selection, breeding phenology, and nest survival for 225 nests of the Corn Bunting, a species of conservation concern in Central and Western Europe, in cropland-dominated, mixed, and grassland-dominated landscapes in SW Central Europe. Nesting phenology spread from April to August, started earlier at lower altitudes and progressed from grassland habitats to arable crops and eco-scheme flower fields. Most nests were placed in cultivated land, with substantial variation between landscape types but also between years within sites, so that large fractions of breeding attempts are prone to fail through land use operations in particular years. When nests were individually protected from land use, 'apparent' and 'Mayfield' survival rates differed substantially between nest habitats, with lowest survival in 2nd year flower fields and highest survival in fallow grassland. Accounting for land use survival from patch-specific mowing, harvesting, and grazing dates, 'total Mayfield nest survival' estimates dropped by about half to 21 %, 13 %, and 20 % for (hay) meadows, alfalfa / clover-grass leys, and pastures, respectively, which held about 2/3 of nests in mixed landscapes. To enhance productivity beyond the thresholds required for local population persistence, we propose refined conservation schemes that improve survival within production farmland, best coupled with the development of prolific 'Corn Bunting Landscapes'.

Abstract:To meet societal expectations and comply with relevant European Directives, several European countries are implementing their own legislation on animal welfare. Consistently, the Walloon Minister of the Environment (Belgium) prohibited the crushing of male laying chicks. This so-called "good farming practice" was deemed to be respectful of the lives of the chickens. However, the alternatives to be implemented in the production chain that this decision on animal welfare requires could undermine the territorialisation of layer hen farming in Wallonia. Indeed, the attachment of layer hen farming to the soil, its sustainability, and its family forms are presented as under threat by the stakeholders. Is premature death the only means to preserve the territorialisation of this kind of breeding? Are male chicks merely considered waste? To address these questions, our interdisciplinary team investigated the Walloon agricultural sector between June 2021 and February 2022, aiming to identify alternatives to the killing of "unproductive" young males. First, we carried out a comprehensive study of the laying-poultry sector, focusing on each step of the production chain. Second, we identified preventive and replacement solutions to the killing of male chicks. Analyses of those solutions were performed inside our group and with relevant stakeholders and it revealed some practical drawbacks that contrasted the potential ethical choice.

Large scale production of White Carneaux pigeons with reliable pedigrees: reproductive characteristics and parent-offspring identification

Abstract:The loft-breeding method was used for the production of 439 White Carneaux pigeons with reliable pedigrees. During the 1-year study, annual productivity averaged 10.5 offspring per parental pair, with a mean of 1.5 offspring per clutch. Early mortality was 13%; most deaths occurred during the first 10 days of age. Eighty-six percent of the clutches contained two eggs, 54% of which hatched. Only 23% of the single-egg clutches hatched. A majority of breeding pairs in the colony made alternate use of two adjacent nests. A seasonal variation was observed in the time intervals between successive clutches; the shortest intervals (37 days) occurred from March through July, while the longest intervals (119 days) occurred in midwinter. A regular daily pattern of parental nest hovering was seen: males incubated eggs and hovered newly hatched birds from 1000 until late afternoon, while females occupied the nests the remainder of the time. The loft-breeding method required frequent observations and accurate record keeping but, compared to individual mating of caged pairs, it had the advantages of lower cost and reduced management problems. The large outdoor lofts allowed the pigeons exercise, group social interactions, and exposure to natural environmental conditions.

Abstract:Analysis of pellets collected from adjacent communal winter roosts of Marsh Harriers Circus aeruginosus and Hen Harriers C. cyaneus on an extensive saltmarsh in the southwest Netherlands showed highly significant differences between the diets of the two species. Marsh Harrier diet showed no change throughout January, February and March. They specialized on ducks, which were about half of their prey numerically and more important by weight. Although Marsh Harriers sampled other prey, this remained at a low level and showed no seasonal response to the availability of young lagomorphs. Hen Harriers occupied the niche of a generalist predator, having a broader diet and responding to the presumed changes in availability of prey with diet shifts. In November, about half of their prey items were passerines but these declined in importance in December, and small mammals rose. The proportions of both small mammals and birds fell in February and March, due to increasing dependence on young lagomorphs. Diet overlap between the two species was greatest in January and declined in February and March.
