Abstract:The diluted solutions of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) (LiTFSI) dissolving in organic solvents (ca. ethylene carbonate (EC)) are not compatible with dual-ion batteries (DIBs) mainly by virtue of the drastic decomposition of electrolyte solutions before the reversible storage of TFSI– in graphite positive electrodes. In this work, lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) is introduced into 1 M LiTFSI-EC solution to strengthen the oxidative endurance. The EC solutions with mixed salts demonstrate a synergistic effect in terms of anion storage in graphite electrode. The anion storage behavior of graphite electrode in the solutions of 1 M LiTFSI+LiPF6-EC is systematically investigated by conventional electrochemical tests of Li/graphite cells, in combination with ex situ/in situ X–ray diffraction measurements of graphite positive electrode and energy-dispersive spectroscopic analyses of the surface of graphite electrodes.

Abstract:Solvents have an effect on anions' intercalation into graphite and therefore partly determine the electrochemical performance of dual-ion batteries. Lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) together with a mixture of ethyl methyl sulfone and sulfolane is employed as electrolyte solutions and graphite electrodes charged to 5.5 V deliver a reversible capacity as high as 90 mA h g–1. In situ X-ray diffraction measurements are performed for graphite electrodes in Li/graphite cells to investigate the formation process of anion–graphite intercalation compounds (AGICs). Intercalation gallery heights are found to change discontinuously from 0.8 to 1.07 nm with potentials in certain solutions, which means that the species inside graphite sheets are altered. Besides, variable factors of the AGICs' evolution process such as potentials, LiBF4 concentration, and past experience of electrochemical intercalation have been discussed.
Utilizing the Full Capacity of Carbon Black As Anode for Na-ion Batteries Via Solvent Co-Intercalation

Abstract:Carbonaceous materials have long been considered promising anode materials for Na-ion batteries. However, the electrochemical performance of conventional carbon anodes is generally poor because the sodium ion storage solely relies on the disordered region of the carbon materials in a carbonate-based electrolyte. The solvent co-intercalation mechanism for Na ions has been recently reported in natural graphite anodes for Na-ion batteries with ether-based electrolytes, but their capacities are still unsatisfactory. We show here for the first time that by combining regular Na ion storage in the disordered carbon layer and solvent co-intercalation mechanism in the graphitized layer of a commercial N330 carbon black as an anode material for Na-ion batteries in ether-based electrolyte, the reversible capacity could be fully realized and doubled in magnitude. This unique sodium intercalation process resulted in a significantly improved electrochemical performance for the N330 electrode with an initial reversible capacity of 234 mAh·g –1 at 50 mA·g –1 and a superior rate capability of 105 mAh·g –1 at 3,200 mA·g –1 . When cycled at 3,200 mA·g –1 over 2,000 cycles, the electrode still exhibited a highly reversible capacity of 72 mAh·g –1 with a negligible capacity loss per cycle (0.0167%). Additionally, surface-sensitive C K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, with the assistance of electrochemical and physicochemical characterizations, helped in identifying the controlled formation and evolution of a thin and robust solid electrolyte interphase film. This film not only reduced the resistance for sodium ion diffusion, but also maintained the structural stability of the electrode for extended cycle reversibility. The superior electrochemical performance of N330 carbon black strongly demonstrated the potential of applying ether-based electrolytes for a wide range of carbon anodes apart from natural graphite.

Abstract:The PF6- intercalation behavior of graphite positive electrodes has been investigated in the solutions of 1 M LiPF6-propylene carbonate (PC)/gamma-butyrolactone (GBL). Conventional electrochemical tests including galvanostatic charge-discharge and cyclic voltammetry are conducted on Li/graphite cells to assess the anion storage capability of the graphite electrode in these solutions. We find an abnormal undulation of capacity with the rise in GBL content. Ex situ and in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements are performed on graphite electrodes to identify the co-intercalating solvents and stage transitions. The intercalation of the anion cosolvated by both GBL and PC into the graphite electrode has been discovered at low GBL contents. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic studies on the solutions are carried out to evaluate interactions between ions and solvents inside. The intercalation behavior of the anion in the graphite electrode is correlated with the solvation environments of the solution.

Abstract:LiPF6 dissolved in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is one of the cheapest groups of electrolyte solutions in dual-ion batteries. Generally, the discharge capacity of anion storage delivered by the graphite cathode grows with increasing LiPF6 concentration. This fact is consistent with the irreversible storage of DMC-solvated PF6-, and then, the underlying mechanism is clarified by the electrochemical tests and ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements of graphite cathodes as well as infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy characterizations of solutions. Moreover, quaternary ammonium salts have facile dissociation, which can effectively regulate the solvation state of the anion and the interaction between ion pairs in the electrolyte. A small amount of tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAPF6) is introduced into the highly concentrated LiPF6-DMC solution to improve the performance of the graphite cathode. The discharge capacity of the Li/graphite cell has increased by approximately 50%. This effect is also correlated with the solvation state of the anion. This study provides an insightful clue for the choice of electrolyte solution in dual-ion batteries.

Abstract:PF6 − intercalated graphite compounds have found promising applications in dual-ion batteries. However, the anion storage mechanisms of graphite positive electrode in different organic solvents have not been well understood yet, especially in the mixed solvents. In this report, PF6 − storage behavior in graphite electrode in 1 M LiPF6-GBL/EMC solutions is studied by conventional electrochemical tests like galvano-static charge-discharge and cyclic voltammetry at first. Then the combined electrochemical in situ characterizations including both in situ X-ray diffraction and electrochemical quartz crystal balance on graphite electrodes are carried out to trace their changes of crystal structure and mass during the anion storage. It is discovered that with EMC addition in the solutions, EMC rather than GBL will preferentially solvate with PF6 − anion as the intercalant species. Moreover, ionic conductivity values and NMR spectra of the solutions were measured to investigate the interactions between ions and solvents inside, and are correlated with the performance of graphite electrode.

Abstract:In our recent work, the solvent of ethylene carbonate (EC) has been found to retard the intercalation of anions into graphite electrodes. Here we demonstrate that gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) also exhibits suppressive effect on the intercalation of PF6− into the interlayer space between the graphene planes. The intercalation process of PF6− into graphite electrode from GBL has been investigated by in situ XRD, in situ Raman and EQCM. Furthermore, the effect of GBL has been compared with those of EC and propylene carbonate (PC).

Abstract:The storage of anions in the graphite electrode depends upon the composition of electrolyte solutions. LiPF6 and cyclic carbonates are the most common components of nonaqueous electrolyte solutions. In this paper, we investigated the performance and solvation states of the graphite cathode in 1 M LiPF6 solutions dissolved in traditional cyclic carbonates including EC, PC, BC, and their mixtures. The storage behavior of PF6– in the graphite electrode was elucidated by several electrochemical experiments combined with ex situ and in situ XRD measurements. Abstract:In a dual-ion battery with an electrolyte solution, the anion storage behavior of graphite positive electrode is heavily dependent on anion solvation. In 1 M LiBF4 solutions dissolved in cyclic carbonates including ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, butylene carbonate, and their mixtures, the performance of graphite positive electrode is investigated by traditional electrochemical tests in conjunction with ex situ and in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterizations. Abstract:Graphite as a positive electrode material of dual ion batteries (DIBs) has attracted tremendous attentions for its advantages including low lost, high working voltage and high energy density. However, very few literatures regarding to the real-time observation of anion intercalation behavior and surface evolution of graphite in DIBs have been reported. Herein, we use in situ atomic force microscope (AFM) to directly observe the intercalation/de-intercalation processes of PF6− in graphite in real time. First, by measuring the change in the distance between graphene layers during intercalation, we found that PF6− intercalates in one of every three graphite layers and the intercalation speed is measured to be 2 µm·min−1. Second, graphite will wrinkle and suffer structural damages at high voltages, along with severe electrolyte decomposition on the surface. These findings provide useful information for further optimizing the capacity and the stability of graphite anode in DIBs.

Abstract:The solvation of anions with organic solvent and its electrochemical intercalation into graphite is a significant research orientation in the electrochemical energy storage. Butylene carbonate (BC), a common solvent with higher oxidation resistance compared with ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC), is profitable in studying anion-graphite intercalation compounds (AGICs). In this paper, the electrochemical intercalation behaviors of three representative anions (BF4−, ClO4− and PF6−) in BC solution were studied and the solvation states of these anions were characterized by electrochemical in situ and ex situ techniques. The interpretation of results illuminated that all three anions were able to intercalate into graphite with the similar reversibility but different solvation state, and the conclusive role that solvent played in the intercalation process was also discovered.

Abstract:Large anions exhibit slow diffusion kinetics in graphite cathode of dual-ion batteries (DIBs); particularly at high current, it suffers severely from the largely-reduced interlayer utilization of graphite cathode, which as a bottleneck limits the fast charge application of DIBs. To maximize interlayer utilization and achieve faster anion diffusion kinetics, a fast and uncrowded anion transport channel must be established. Herein, Li+ was pre-intercalated into the graphite paper (GP) cathode to increase the interlayer spacing, and then hosted for the PF6- anion storage. Combined with theoretical calculation, it shows that the local interlayer spacing enlargement and the residual Li+ reduce the anion intercalation energy and diffusion barrier, leading to good rate stability. The obtained GP with Li+ pre-intercalation (GP-Li) electrode exhibits a discharge capacity of 23.1 mAh g-1 at a high current of 1300 mA g-1. This work provides a facile method to efficiently improve the interlayer utilization of graphite cathode at large currents.

Abstract:Abstract The use of LiPF6 in Li-ion battery electrolytes provides sufficient stability, conductivity, and cost in most applications. However, LiPF6 has also been known to cause degradation in Li-ion cells, primarily from its thermal decomposition or hydrolysis to form acidic species. This work considers the use of imide salts lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as an alternative to LiPF6 in LiFePO4/Graphite cells. The use of LiFSI or LiTFSI over LiPF6 improved cycling performance both in control electrolyte (no additives) and electrolyte containing 2% vinylene carbonate (VC). However, while metrics from ultra high precision coulometry, isothermal microcalorimetry, and storage experiments all agreed with long-term cycling results for cells with control electrolyte, the opposite was seen with 2VC electrolyte. Pouch bag experiments elucidated information about the origin of parasitic reactions in LFP/Graphite cells, showing that most parasitic reactions originate at the negative electrode. Additionally, pouch bag experiments reveal a more passivating graphite SEI for LiFSI+2VC electrolyte, agreeing with long term cycling experiments. It is concluded that in control electrolyte, the use of LiFSI limits redox shuttles, Fe dissolution, and SEI decomposition, while in 2VC electrolyte, LiFSI introduces a minor self-discharge reaction that does not impact long-term cycling.

Abstract:Controlling graphite intercalation is vital for its use in potassium ion batteries. Prior studies have revealed different intercalation behaviors between a dilute (1 M or less) vs. a concentrated (4 M or higher) ether-based electrolytes: the former forms solvent-co-intercalation while the latter shows binary intercalation. However, no study has been carried out on the intermediate concentrations. In this work, for the first time we report that in an intermediate concentration of electrolyte (2 mol KFSI per kg DME, 2 mol/kg) the electrochemical intercalation of K+ ions in graphite anode exhibits an interesting transition from the ternary to binary process with the increasing cycle number. Furthermore, the pre-formed anion-derived solid-electrolyte interphase on graphite anode in highly concentrated electrolyte was rather stable in 2 mol/kg of KFSI/DME electrolyte, and as a result the graphite anode achieved a two-year cycle life with an ultrahigh capacity retention of 96.7% based on binary intercalation.

Abstract:Intercalation of anions unlocks graphite as a positive material in energy storage devices, and the performance could be affected by solvents in solutions. In this context, it is vital to investigate the role of solvents in anion intercalation. Herein, a hierarchical intercalation phenomenon, in which different graphite intercalation compounds are generated in the same solution, is studied in lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) solutions of carboxylate ester solvents γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and methyl acetate (MA). The evolution modes of the graphite cathode structure during electrochemical intercalation and deintercalation are discussed via in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Based on this, the relationship between GICs and potentials, together with concentrations, is compared in detail. Furthermore, various graphite materials with different surface properties are applied to adjust the anions' solvation status inside graphite sheets.

Anion Intercalation into a Graphite Electrode from Trimethyl Phosphate

Abstract:Trimethyl phosphate (TMP) is a flame-retardant solvent frequently used in nonaqueous electric energy storage devices. Anions can hardly intercalate into a graphite positive electrode from neat TMP at ordinary conditions. In TMP solutions, dissolving lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4), lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI), and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) (LiTFSI), by means of increasing lithium salt concentration or increasing the charge cutoff voltage of Li/graphite cells, the TMP-solvated anions can successfully intercalate into graphite positive electrodes. Abstract:Ethylene carbonate solutions dissolving mixed lithium salts composed of both difluoro(oxalato)borate (DFOB–) and hexafluorophosphate (PF6–) anions are introduced into Li/graphite cells. The anions' intercalation procedures into the graphite positive electrode from these solutions are explored by charge/discharge, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopic tests in combination with electrochemical in situ characterization including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. Furthermore, these solutions are characterized by ionic conductivity together with nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. Abstract:The electrochemical intercalation of hexafluorophosphate anion into a graphite positive electrode from methyl propionate (MP) has been investigated by conventional electrochemical techniques in conjunction with in situ Raman spectroscopy and ex situ X-ray diffraction. Graphite electrodes could deliver stable reversible specific capacities higher than 100mAhg−1 in MP-based solutions at room temperature. Furthermore, the storage/release of PF6− anion into/from graphite electrodes becomes facilitated in MP-based solutions at a very low temperature, as compared with other solvents, such as propylene carbonate (PC) and ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC). The effect of LiPF6 concentration has also been addressed. The solvation states of the anion in the MP solutions were analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance and infrared spectroscopy.

Abstract:Graphite has been reported to have anion as well as cation intercalation capacities as both cathode and anode host materials for the dual ion battery. In this work, we study the intercalation of bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (TFSI) anion from ionic liquid electrolyte into graphite with first-principles calculations. We build models for TFSI-C$_n$ compounds with systematically increasing unit cell sizes of graphene sheet and investigate their stabilities by calculating the formation energy, resulting in the linear decrease and arriving at the limit of stability. With identified unit cell sizes for stable compound formation, we reveal that the interlayer distance and relative volume expansion ratio of TFSI-C$_n$ increase as increasing the concentration of TFSI intercalate during the charge process. The electrode voltage is determined to be ranged from 3.8 V to 3.0 V at the specific capacity ranging from 30 mAh g$^{-1}$ to 54 mAh g$^{-1}$ in agreement with experiment. Moreover, a very low activation barrier of under 50 meV for TFSI migration and good electronic conductivity give a proof of using these compounds as a promising cathode. Through the analysis of charge transfer, we clarify the mechanism of TFSI-C$_n$ formation, and reveal new prospects for developing graphite based cathode.
