Abstract:In the present work, a method of alternating orthogonal projections is described in the context of near-field acoustical holography; it allows missing (or "not measured") data to be recovered, thus relieving the strictness of measurement requirements related to the use of the discrete Fourier transform. The method described here provides the detailed foundation for the patch holography procedure that has previously been introduced to mitigate finite measurement aperture effects by allowing the sound field to be iteratively extended beyond the measurement aperture. It is also shown that the latter iterative algorithm can be used regardless of the spatial distribution of measured data: i.e., patches can be discontinuous. Numerical simulations performed by using a synthetic sound field created by a point-driven, simply supported plate were used to demonstrate the latter point. In particular, a multipatch holography procedure is described that allows a source distribution to be reconstructed from the hologram pressure measured over multiple, unconnected patches. It is finally shown that a related approach allows spatial resolution enhancement by interpolation between measured points.

Abstract:The flexibility of insect wings and model wings in flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) is crucial to guarantee an economic flight. Since the wing deformation is bilaterally coupled with the aerodynamic force, conventional simulations on this fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problem mostly build up their models using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational solid dynamics (CSD) methods, which requires high computational costs. Alternatively, an analytical model is proposed here for a quick estimate of the aerodynamic performance and passive deformation on flexible flapping wings. The deformation is simplified into a rigid-body rotation at the wing root, a spanwise twist, and a shortening along the span. The aerodynamic force is approximated by a predictive quasi-steady model and the spanwise twist is modeled using a quadratic polynomial. Results show that the introduction of wing flexibility can attenuate the lift generation due to the negative rotational lift and adverse translation–rotation coupling effect after each stroke reversal. The wing with moderate stiffness is recommended to achieve a high lift. An increase of aspect ratio and root cutoff can also enhance the dimensional lift generation, while the most economic wing design has an aspect ratio around 5 and no root cut-off. More importantly, the increase of flapping frequency can only result in a lift enhancement within certain limits. However, the power consumption keeps increasing as the frequency goes up, indicating a significant breakdown of performance. Our findings can uncover the role of wing flexibility in both insects and FWMAVs and therefore contribute to the design of FWMAVs.

Abstract:We establish the dynamics relative to flapping angle of the flapping wing vehicle based on the quasi-steady aerodynamics model and Newton-Euler motion equations, and describe the stability analysis method of linearized perturbation equation under active control by varying flapping frequency based on the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion. To give a demonstration, we design a flapping wing mechanism and analyze its stability under the linear controller. As a typical benchmark, the aerodynamic and kinematic parameters of a hummingbird are used to estimate stability derivatives of the flapping-wing vehicle. The feasible region for the gain selection of our linear controller is finally obtained.

Abstract:Insect wings are deformable structures that change shape passively and dynamically owing to inertial and aerodynamic forces during flight. It is still unclear how the three-dimensional and passive change of wing kinematics owing to inherent wing flexibility contributes to unsteady aerodynamics and energetics in insect flapping flight. Here, we perform a systematic fluid-structure interaction based analysis on the aerodynamic performance of a hovering hawkmoth, Manduca, with an integrated computational model of a hovering insect with rigid and flexible wings. Aerodynamic performance of flapping wings with passive deformation or prescribed deformation is evaluated in terms of aerodynamic force, power and efficiency. Our results reveal that wing flexibility can increase downwash in wake and hence aerodynamic force: first, a dynamic wing bending is observed, which delays the breakdown of leading edge vortex near the wing tip, responsible for augmenting the aerodynamic force-production; second, a combination of the dynamic change of wing bending and twist favourably modifies the wing kinematics in the distal area, which leads to the aerodynamic force enhancement immediately before stroke reversal. Moreover, an increase in hovering efficiency of the flexible wing is achieved as a result of the wing twist. An extensive study of wing stiffness effect on aerodynamic performance is further conducted through a tuning of Young's modulus and thickness, indicating that insect wing structures may be optimized not only in terms of aerodynamic performance but also dependent on many factors, such as the wing strength, the circulation capability of wing veins and the control of wing movements.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Leflunomide (LEF) is an immune modulator used most commonly for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The mechanisms of action of LEF also include anti-microbial effects, particularly anti-viral effects. OBSERVATIONS We present three patients with atopic dermatitis on azathioprine therapy who had multiple verrucae and in two molluscum contagiosum (MC) that were resistant to repeated conventional therapies. These patients were switched to LEF, and all the patients showed complete resolution of their verrucae and MC within 2 months of starting therapy. In addition, all three patients showed equivalent to better control of their atopic dermatitis with LEF. CONCLUSIONS LEF has previously been reported to be a useful immune modulator for the treatment of severe atopic dermatitis. The spectrum of anti-viral effects previously seen with leflunomide did appear beneficial in these patients in clearing verrucae and MC, which had been resistant to conventional therapies while the patients were on azathioprine.

Abstract:Abstract In order to study the role of the passive deformation in the aerodynamics of insect wings, we computationally model the three-dimensional fluid–structure interaction of an elastic rectangular wing at a low aspect ratio during hovering flight. The code couples a viscous incompressible flow solver based on the immersed-boundary method and a nonlinear finite-element solver for thin-walled structures. During a flapping stroke, the wing surface is dominated by non-uniform chordwise deformations. The effects of the wing stiffness, mass ratio, phase angle of active pitching, and Reynolds number are investigated. The results show that both the phase and the rate of passive pitching due to the wing flexibility can significantly modify the aerodynamics of the wing. The dynamic pitching depends not only on the specified kinematics at the wing root and the stiffness of the wing, but also greatly on the mass ratio, which represents the relative importance of the wing inertia and aerodynamic forces in the wing deformation. We use the ratio between the flapping frequency, $\omega $ , and natural frequency of the wing, ${\omega }_{n} $ , as the non-dimensional stiffness. In general, when $\omega / {\omega }_{n} \leq 0. 3$ , the deformation significantly enhances the lift and also improves the lift efficiency despite a disadvantageous camber. In particular, when the inertial pitching torque is assisted by an aerodynamic torque of comparable magnitude, the lift efficiency can be markedly improved.

Abstract:Hovering flight for flapping wing vehicles requires rapid and relatively complex reciprocating movement of a wing relative to a stationary surrounding fluid. This note develops a compact analytical aero-kinematic model that can be used for optimization of flapping wing kinematics against aerodynamic criteria of effectiveness (maximum lift) and efficiency (minimum power for a given amount of lift). It can also be used to make predictions of required flapping frequency for a given geometry and basic aerodynamic parameters. The kinematic treatment is based on a consolidation of an existing formulation that allows explicit derivation of flapping velocity for complex motions whereas the aerodynamic model is based on existing quasi-steady analysis. The combined aero-kinematic model provides novel explicit analytical expressions for both lift and power of a hovering wing in a compact form that enables exploration of a rich kinematic design space. Good agreement is found between model predictions of flapping frequency and observed results for a number of insects and optimal hovering kinematics identified using the model are consistent with results from studies using higher order computational models. For efficient flight, the flapping angle should vary using a triangular profile in time leading to a constant velocity flapping motion, whereas for maximum effectiveness the shape of variation should be sinusoidal. For both cases the wing pitching motion should be rectangular such that pitch change at stroke reversal is as rapid as possible.
On the unsteady aerodynamics of flapping wings under dynamic hovering kinematics

Abstract:Hummingbirds and insects achieve outstanding flight performance by adapting their flapping motion to the flight requirements. Their wing kinematics can change from smooth flapping to highly dynamic waveforms, generating unsteady aerodynamic phenomena such as leading-edge vortices (LEV), rotational circulation, wing wake capture, and added mass. This article uncovers the interactions of these mechanisms in the case of a rigid semi-elliptical wing undergoing aggressive kinematics in the hovering regime at $Re\sim \mathcal{O}(10^3)$. The flapping kinematics were parametrized using smoothed steps and triangular functions and the flow dynamics were simulated by combining the overset method with Large Eddy Simulations (LES). The analysis of the results identifies an initial acceleration phase and a cruising phase. During the former, the flow is mostly irrotational and governed by the added mass effect. The added mass was shown to be responsible for a lift first peak due to the strong flapping acceleration. The dynamic pitching and the wing wake interaction generate a second lift peak due to a downwash flow and a vortex system on the proximal and distal parts of the wing's pressure side. Conversely, aerodynamic forces in the cruising phase are mainly governed by the growth and the establishment of the LEV. Finally, the leading flow structures in each phase and their impact on the aerodynamic forces were isolated using the extended Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD).

Deformable Blade Element and Unsteady Vortex Lattice Fluid-Structure Interaction Modeling of a 2D Flapping Wing

Abstract:Abstract Flapping insect wings experience appreciable deformation due to aerodynamic and inertial forces. This deformation is believed to benefit the insect’s aerodynamic force production as well as energetic efficiency. However, the fluid-structure interaction (FSI) models used to estimate wing deformations are often computationally demanding and are therefore challenged by parametric studies. Here, we develop a simple FSI model of a flapping wing idealized as a two-dimensional pitching-plunging airfoil. Using the Lagrangian formulation, we derive the reduced-order structural framework governing wing’s elastic deformation. We consider two fluid models: quasi-steady Deformable Blade Element Theory (DBET) and Unsteady Vortex Lattice Method (UVLM). DBET is computationally economical but does not provide insight into the flow structure surrounding the wing, whereas UVLM approximates flows but requires more time to solve. For simple flapping kinematics, DBET and UVLM produce similar estimates of the aerodynamic force normal to the surface of a rigid wing. More importantly, when the wing is permitted to deform, DBET and UVLM agree well in predicting wingtip deflection and aerodynamic normal force. The most notable difference between the model predictions is a roughly 20° phase difference in normal force. DBET estimates wing deformation and force production approximately 15 times faster than UVLM for the parameters considered, and both models solve in under a minute when considering 15 flapping periods. Moving forward, we will benchmark both low-order models with respect to high fidelity computational fluid dynamics coupled to finite element analysis, and assess the agreement between DBET and UVLM over a broader range of flapping kinematics.
Optimization of Lift Force for a Bio-Inspired Flapping Wing Model in Hovering Flight

Abstract:The lift force is an important component that affects the aerodynamic performance of bio-inspired flapping-wing micro aerial vehicles. However, there is a lack of endeavors in the optimization of the flapping wing parameters that affect the lift force of micro aerial vehicles. This research is therefore to establish a methodology that combines computational fluid dynamic simulation for the evaluation of the lift generation and wing parameters. The Taguchi’s framework for design of experiments, combined with the computational fluid dynamics simulations, is performed on a simplified robotic fly wing model used in the experiment found in Dickinson et al. (1999), under the hovering flight mode, to identify the most influential parameters on the lift generation of micro aerial vehicles. A commercial computational fluid dynamics code, ANSYS/FLUENT, along with a three-dimensional Navier–Stokes solver is used to simulate the unsteady flow field. With the optimization of the time-averaged lift force as the optimization objective, five typical parameters (flapping frequency, maximum angle of attacks during the upstroke and downstroke motions, stroke amplitude, and rotation type) in the flapping trajectory equation are selected as the input factors with each having four levels. Specific computational fluid dynamics cases are simulated in accordance with the chosen orthogonal arrays. By conducting statistical analyses with analyses of means and variance, the flapping frequency and the stroke amplitude are determined to be the two most influential parameters. The response surface of the time-averaged lift force and the power consumption contour are constructed with respect to these two parameters to determine the optimal combination for the generation of lift forces under a specific power constrain and provide a guideline for bio-inspired micro aerial vehicle designs.

Abstract:This study presents a model experiment method that can accurately reproduce the flapping motion of insect wings and measure related unsteady aerodynamic data in real time. This method is applied to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of inclined hovering, which distinguishes it from normal hovering by having asymmetric wing rotation during the two half strokes. In the study of the aerodynamic influence of the downstroke rotational angle, it is found that the rotational angle affects lift generation by changing the angle between the wing surface and the horizontal plane in the mid-downstroke. When the wing is almost parallel to the horizontal plane in the mid-downstroke, the vortex structure can maintain structural integrity and a large magnitude, which is conducive to the generation of high lift. In the study of the aerodynamic effect of the upstroke rotational angle, the windward conversion mechanism is proposed to explain the influence of the upstroke rotational angle on the direction and magnitude of thrust. Obtaining the rotational angle that is most conducive to maintaining the flight state of hovering in the present study can provide guidance for the structural design and kinematic control of micro aerial vehicles.

Abstract:The aerodynamic characteristics of insect flight are investigated with the aim of developing an aerodynamic flapping-wing model for vertical and level forward flight. Models are sought that offer a compromise between physics and the rapidity of calculation. The insect prototype is the hawk moth. The wings have three degrees of freedom (pitching, weaving, and flapping) and are assumed as thin, rigid, flat plates. The aerodynamic forces and moments are determined via a quasi-steady-state model. This model is augmented with a design procedure to account for the unsteady flow due to the wake induced effects. Comparisons are shown with numerical simulations for the hover case and with experimental results for the forward-flight case. A heuristic optimization strategy (particle swarming optimization) is used to determine the set of optimal flight parameters over a range of forward speeds. Abstract:Small-scale flapping-wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs) are an emerging robotic technology with many applications in areas including infrastructure monitoring and remote sensing. However, challenges such as inefficient energetics and decreased payload capacity preclude the useful implementation of FWMAVs. Insects serve as inspiration to FWMAV design owing to their energy efficiency, maneuverability, and capacity to hover. Still, the biomechanics of insects remain challenging to model, thereby limiting the translational design insights we can gather from their flight. In particular, it is not well-understood how wing flexibility impacts the energy requirements of flapping flight. In this work, we developed a simple model of an insect drive train consisting of a compliant thorax coupled to a flexible wing flapping with single-degree-of-freedom rotation in a fluid environment. We applied this model to quantify the energy required to actuate a flapping wing system with parameters based off a hawkmoth Manduca sexta. Despite its simplifications, the model predicts thorax displacement, wingtip deflection and peak aerodynamic force in proximity to what has been measured experimentally in flying moths. We found a flapping system with flexible wings requires 20% less energy than a flapping system with rigid wings while maintaining similar aerodynamic performance. Passive wing deformation increases the effective angle of rotation of the flexible wing, thereby reducing the maximum rotation angle at the base of the wing. We investigated the sensitivity of these results to parameter deviations and found that the energetic savings conferred by the flexible wing are robust over a wide range of parameters.

Abstract:Insect wings usually are flexible and deform significantly under the combined inertial and aerodynamic load. To study the effect of wing flexibility on both lift and thrust production in forward flight, a two-dimensional numerical simulation is employed to compute the fluid–structure interaction of an elastic wing section translating in an inclined stroke plane while pitching around its leading ledge. The effects of the wing stiffness, mass ratio, stroke plane angle, and flight speed are considered. The results show that the passive pitching due to wing deformation can significantly increase thrust while either maintaining lift at the same level or increasing it simultaneously. Another important finding is that even though the wing structure and actuation kinematics are symmetric, chordwise deformation of the wing shows a larger magnitude during upstroke than during downstroke. The asymmetry is more pronounced when the wing has a low mass ratio so that the fluid-induced deformation is significant. Such an aerodynamic cause may serve as an additional mechanism for the asymmetric deformation pattern observed in real insects.
Scaling of the performance of insect-inspired passive-pitching flapping wings

Abstract:Flapping flight using passive pitch regulation is a commonly used mode of thrust and lift generation in insects and has been widely emulated in flying vehicles because it allows for simple implementation of the complex kinematics associated with flapping wing systems. Although robotic flight employing passive pitching to regulate angle of attack has been previously demonstrated, there does not exist a comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of this mode of aerodynamic force generation, nor a method to accurately predict its performance over a range of relevant scales. Here, we present such scaling laws, incorporating aerodynamic, inertial and structural elements of the flapping-wing system, validating the theoretical considerations using a mechanical model which is tested for a linear elastic hinge and near-sinusoidal stroke kinematics over a range of scales, hinge stiffnesses and flapping frequencies. We find that suitably defined dimensionless parameters, including the Reynolds number, Re, the Cauchy number, Ch, and a newly defined 'inertial-elastic' number, IE, can reliably predict the kinematic and aerodynamic performance of the system. Our results also reveal a consistent dependency of pitching kinematics on these dimensionless parameters, providing a connection between lift coefficient and kinematic features such as angle of attack and wing rotation.

Abstract:The Flapping Rotary Wing (FRW) is a micro air vehicle wing layout coupling flapping, pitching, and rotating motions. It can gain benefits in high lift from a fast passive rotating motion, which is tightly related to the passive pitching motion directly caused by wing flexible deformation. Therefore, flexible deformation is crucial for the wing kinematics and aerodynamic performance of an FRW. In this paper, we explored the effect of flexibility on wing kinematics and aerodynamics on the basis of a mechanical FRW model. A photogrammetric method was adopted to capture motion images according to which wing orientations and deformations were reconstructed. Corresponding aerodynamic force was computed using computational fluid dynamic method, and wing kinematics and deformations were used as simulation inputs. The experimental measurements presented the real orientation and deformation pattern of a real FRW. The wing passive deformation of a high-intensity FRW was found to be mainly caused by inertial force, and a linear positive spanwise twist was observed in the FRW. The effects of wing deformation on aerodynamic force production and the underlying mechanism were addressed. Results showed that lift augment, rotating moment enhancement, and power efficiency improvement can be achieved when a wing becomes flexible. Wing spanwise twist mainly accounts for these changes in aerodynamics, and increment in spanwise twist could further contributes to aerodynamic improvement.

Abstract:Flapping wings of insects can follow various complex-motion waveforms, influencing the flow structures over a wing and consequently the aerodynamic performance. However, most studies of insect-wing models incorporate either simple harmonic or robofly-like motion waveforms. The effects of other waveforms appear to be under-explored. Motivated by this, the present study investigates the individual and combined effects of the sweep- and pitch-motion waveforms for fixed flapping frequency and amplitude of a fruit-fly wing planform. Physical experiments are conducted to directly measure the forces and torques acting on the wing. Interestingly, the sweep waveform is observed to influence the overall variation in the lift coefficient ( $C_{L}$ ), whereas the pitch waveform is observed to influence only the instantaneous $C_{L}$ during stroke reversal. Carefully validated three-dimensional numerical simulations reveal that a change in the strength of the large-scale vortex over the wing as the sweep profile parameter is varied is responsible for the observed variations in $C_{L}$ . An exploration over wide ranges of the sweep and the pitch profile parameters shows that the waveforms maximising the mean lift coefficient are different from those maximising the power economy. Consistent with some previous experiments on robotic insects, the possibility of passive pitch motion is observed at slower pitching rates. Contours of the mean lift coefficient and power economy mapped on the planes of the sweep and the pitch profile parameters can help designers of flapping-wing micro air vehicles in selecting the waveforms appropriate for their design criteria.

Abstract:The wing planform and flapping kinematics are critical for the hovering flight of flapping wing micro air vehicles (FWMAVs). The degree of influence of wing geometry and kinematic parameters on aerodynamic performance still lacks in-depth analysis. In this study, a sensitivity analysis was conducted based on the quasi-steady aerodynamic model. Each parameter was investigated independently by using the control variable method. The degree of each variable's influence on lift, power, and power loading is evaluated and compared. Furthermore, detailed exponential relationships were established between the parameters and the corresponding aerodynamic properties. It is found that, for the geometric parameters, wing area has the greatest influence on lift, and the distribution of area has the most visible effect on aerodynamic power. All geometric parameters are negatively correlated with power loading. For the kinematic parameters, flapping frequency, compared with sweeping amplitude, results in faster lift growth and slower drop in power loading, while their influence on aerodynamic power is nearly comparable. A moderate pitching amplitude with advanced rotation will maximize the lift. For the flapping trajectory, lift and power loading are primarily affected by the shape of the pitching motion rather than the sweeping motion. But the sweeping motion seems to dominate the power consumption. The research in this paper is helpful to understand the effect of each parameter and provide theoretical guidance for the development of FWMAVs.

Abstract:Variable-sweep wings have large shape-changing capabilities and wide flight envelops,which are considered as one of the most promising directions for intelligent morphing UAVs.Aero-dynamic investigations always focus on several static states in the varying sweep process,which ignore the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics.However,deviations to static aerodynamic forces are inevitably caused by dynamic sweep motion.In this work,first,unsteady aerodynamic charac-teristics on a typical variable-sweep UAV with large aspect ratio were analyzed.Then,deep mech-anism of unsteady aerodynamic characteristics in the varying sweep process was studied.Finally,numerical simulation method integrated with structured moving overset grids was applied to solve the unsteady fluid of varying sweep process.The simulation results of a sweep forward-backward circle show a distinct dynamic hysteresis loop surrounding the static data for the aerodynamic forces.Compared with the static lift coefficients,at the same sweep angles,dynamic lift coefficient in sweep forward process are all smaller,while dynamic sweep backward lift coefficient are all lar-ger.In addition,dynamic deviations to static lift coefficient are positively related with the varying sweep speeds.Mechanism study on the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics indicates that three key factors lead to the dynamic hysteresis loop in varying sweep process.They are the effects of additional velocity caused by varying sweep motion,the effects of flow hysteresis and viscosity.The additional velocity induced by sweep motion affects the transversal flow direction along the wing and the effective angle of attack at the airfoil profile.The physical properties of flow,the hys-teresis and viscosity affect the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics by flow separation and induced vortexes.
