Abstract:We present a progress report for studies on maxima related to offspring in branching processes. We summarize and discuss the findings on the subject that appeared in the last ten years. Some of the results are refined and illustrated with new examples.

Abstract:We consider a subcritical Galton–Watson tree $mathsf {T}_{n}^{Omega }$ conditioned on having $n$ vertices with outdegree in a fixed set $Omega $. The offspring distribution is assumed to have a regularly varying density such that it lies in the domain of attraction of an $alpha $-stable law for $1<alpha le 2$. Our main results consist of a local limit theorem for the maximal degree of $mathsf {T}_{n}^{Omega }$, and various limits describing the global shape of $mathsf {T}_{n}^{Omega }$. In particular, we describe the joint behaviour of the fringe subtrees dangling from the vertex with maximal degree. We provide applications of our main results to establish limits of graph parameters, such as the height, the non-maximal vertex outdegrees, and fringe subtree statistics.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates a new regeneration processes technology making use of positive stable distributions. We study the asymptotic behavior of branching processes with a randomly controlled migration component. Using the new method, we confirm some known results and establish new limit theorems that hold in a more general setting.

Abstract:Potential theory is a central tool to understand and analyse Markov processes. In this article, we develop its probabilistic counterpart for branching Markov chains. Specifically, we examine versions of quasi-processes or interlacements that incorporate branching, referred to as branching quasi-processes. These processes are characterized by their occupation measures. If a certain decorability condition is fulfilled, there's an isomorphism between the set of branching quasi-processes and the set of excessive measures, where the excessive measures correspond to the occupation measures of the branching quasi-processes. Utilizing a branching quasi-process as an intensity measure for a Poisson point process leads to the formulation of random interlacements with branching. In cases where individuals reproduce with an average rate of one or less, we detail a construction that draws on classical interlacements. Our approach significantly employs the additive structure of branching Markov chains, with the spinal representation of the branching processes serving as a crucial technical tool.

Abstract:The long-term behavior of flows of continuous-state branching processes are characterized through subordinators and extremal processes. The extremal processes arise in the case of supercritical processes with infinite mean and of subcritical processes with infinite variation. The jumps of these extremal processes are interpreted as specific initial individuals whose progenies overwhelm the population. These individuals, which correspond to the records of a certain Poisson point process embedded in the flow, are called super-individuals. They radically increase the growth rate to $+infty$ in the supercritical case, and slow down the rate of extinction in the subcritical one.

Abstract:Branching processes in a varying environment encompass a wide range of stochastic demographic models, and their complete understanding in terms of limit behaviour poses a formidable research challenge. In this paper, we conduct a thorough investigation of such processes within a continuous-time framework, assuming that the reproduction law of individuals adheres to a specific parametric form for the probability generating function. Our six clear-cut limit theorems support the notion of recognizing five distinct asymptotical regimes for branching in varying environments: supercritical, asymptotically degenerate, critical, strictly subcritical, and loosely subcritical.

Immortal Branching Processes

Abstract:We introduce and study the dynamics of an \emph{immortal} critical branching process. In the classic, critical branching process, particles give birth to a single offspring or die at the same rates. Even though the average population is constant in time, the ultimate fate of the population is extinction. We augment this branching process with immortality by positing that either: (a) a single particle cannot die, or (b) there exists an immortal stem cell that gives birth to ordinary cells that can subsequently undergo critical branching. We discuss the new dynamical aspects of this immortal branching process.

Abstract:We investigate branching processes in varying environment, for which and , , where stands for the offspring mean in generation n. Since subcritical regimes dominate, such processes die out almost surely, therefore to obtain a nontrivial limit we consider two scenarios: conditioning on nonextinction, and adding immigration. In both cases we show that the process converges in distribution without normalization to a nondegenerate compound-Poisson limit law. The proofs rely on the shape function technique, worked out by Kersting (2020).

Abstract:This work introduces a construction of conformal processes that combines the theory of branching processes with chordal Loewner evolution. The main novelty lies in the choice of driving measure for the Loewner evolution: given a finite genealogical tree $\mathcal{T}$, we choose a driving measure for the Loewner evolution that is supported on a system of particles that evolves by Dyson Brownian motion at inverse temperature $\beta \in (0,\infty]$ between birth and death events. When $\beta=\infty$, the driving measure degenerates to a system of particles that evolves through Coulombic repulsion between branching events. In this limit, the following graph embedding theorem is established: When $\mathcal{T}$ is equipped with a prescribed set of angles, $\{\theta_v \in (0,\pi/2)\}_{v \in \mathcal{T}}$ the hull of the Loewner evolution is an embedding of $\mathcal{T}$ into the upper half-plane with trivalent edges that meet at angles $(2\theta_v,2\pi-4\theta_v,2\theta_v)$ at the image of each edge $v$. We also study the scaling limit when $\beta\in (0,\infty]$ is fixed and $\mathcal{T}$ is a binary Galton-Watson process that converges to a continuous state branching process. We treat both the unconditioned case (when the Galton-Watson process converges to the Feller diffusion) and the conditioned case (when the Galton-Watson tree converges to the continuum random tree). In each case, we characterize the scaling limit of the driving measure as a superprocess. In the unconditioned case, the scaling limit is the free probability analogue of the Dawson-Watanabe superprocess that we term the Dyson superprocess.

Abstract:In this work we model the dynamics of a population that evolves as a continuous time branching process with a trait structure and ecological interactions in form of mutations and competition between individuals. We generalize existing microscopic models by allowing individuals to have multiple offspring at a reproduction event. Furthermore, we allow the reproduction law to be influenced both by the trait type of the parent as well as by the mutant trait type. We look for tractable large population approximations. More precisely, under some natural assumption on the branching and mutation mechanisms, we establish a superprocess limit as solution of a well-posed martingale problem. Standard approaches do not apply in our case due to the lack of the branching property, which is a consequence of the dependency created by the competition between individuals. For showing uniqueness we therefore had to develop a generalization of Dawson's Girsanov Theorem that may be of independent interest.

Abstract:For any branching process, we demonstrate that the typical total number $r_{\rm mp}(\nu \tau)$ of events triggered over all generations within any sufficiently large time window $\tau$ exhibits, at criticality, a super-linear dependence $r_{\rm mp}(\nu \tau) \sim (\nu \tau)^\gamma$ (with $\gamma >1$) on the total number $\nu \tau$ of the immigrants arriving at the Poisson rate $\nu$. In branching processes in which immigrants (or sources) are characterized by fertilities distributed according to an asymptotic power law tail with tail exponent $1 < \gamma \leqslant 2$, the exponent of the super-linear law for $r_{\rm mp}(\nu \tau)$ is identical to the exponent $\gamma$ of the distribution of fertilities. For $\gamma>2$ and for standard branching processes without power law distribution of fertilities, $r_{\rm mp}(\nu \tau) \sim (\nu \tau)^2$. This novel scaling law replaces and tames the divergence $\nu \tau/(1-n)$ of the mean total number ${\bar R}_t(\tau)$ of events, as the branching ratio (defined as the average number of triggered events of first generation per source) tends to 1. The derivation uses the formalism of generating probability functions. The corresponding prediction is confirmed by numerical calculations and an heuristic derivation enlightens its underlying mechanism. We also show that ${\bar R}_t(\tau)$ is always linear in $\nu \tau$ even at criticality ($n=1$). Our results thus illustrate the fundamental difference between the mean total number, which is controlled by a few extremely rare realizations, and the typical behavior represented by $r_{\rm mp}(\nu \tau)$.
Sampling distributions and estimation for multi-type Branching Processes

Abstract:Consider a multi-dimensional supercritical branching process with offspring distribution in a parametric family. Here, each vector coordinate corresponds to the number of offspring of a given type. The process is observed under family-size sampling: a random sample is drawn, each individual reporting its vector of brood sizes. In this work, we show that the set in which no siblings are sampled (so that the sample can be considered independent) has probability converging to one under certain conditions on the sampling size. Furthermore, we show that the sampling distribution of the observed sizes converges to the product of identical distributions, hence developing a framework for which the process can be considered iid, and the usual methods for parameter estimation apply. We provide asymptotic distributions for the resulting estimators.

Abstract:We consider a class of density-dependent branching processes which generalises exponential, logistic and Gompertz growth. A population begins with a single individual, grows exponentially initially, and then growth may slow down as the population size moves towards a carrying capacity. At a time while the population is still growing superlinearly, a fixed number of individuals are sampled and their coalescent tree is drawn. Taking the sampling time and carrying capacity simultaneously to infinity, we prove convergence of the coalescent tree to a limiting tree which is in a sense universal over our class of models.

Abstract:We study age-structured branching models with reproduction law depending on the remaining lifetime of the parent. The lifespan of an individual is decided at its birth and its remaining lifetime decreases at the unit speed. The models without or with immigration are constructed as measure-valued processes by pathwise unique solutions of stochastic equations driven by time-space Poisson random measures. In the subcritical branching case, we give a sufficient condition for the ergodicity of the process with immigration. Two large number laws and a central limit theorem of the occupation times are proved.

Abstract:The classical model for the genealogies of a neutrally evolving population in a fixed environment is due to Kingman. Kingman's coalescent process, which produces a binary tree, emerges universally from many microscopic models in which the variance in the number of offspring is finite. It is understood that power-law offsprings distributions with infinite variance can result in a very different type of coalescent structure with merging of more than two lineages. Here, we investigate the regime where the variance of the offspring distribution is finite but comparable to the population size. This is achieved by studying a model in which the log offspring sizes have stretched exponential tails. Such offspring distributions are motivated by biology, where they emerge from a toy model of growth in a heterogeneous environment, but also from mathematics and statistical physics, where limit theorems and phase transitions for sums over random exponentials have received considerable attention due to their appearance in the partition function of Derrida's random energy model (REM). We find that the limit coalescent is a β-coalescent—a previously studied model emerging from evolutionary dynamics models with heavy-tailed offspring distributions. We also discuss the connection to previous results on the REM.

Abstract:In this paper we establish spatial central limit theorems for a large class of supercritical branching Markov processes with general spatial-dependent branching mechanisms. These are generalizations of the spatial central limit theorems proved in [1], P. for branching OU processes with binary branching mechanisms. Compared with the results of [1], our central limit theorems are more satisfactory in the sense that the normal random variables in our theorems are non-degenerate.
