Abstract:Utilizing artificial photosynthesis for the conversion of CO2 into value-added fuels has been recognized as a promising strategy for the ever-increasing energy crisis and the greenhouse effect. Herein, the element doping engineering of red spherical g-C3N4 having oxygen bonded with compositional carbon (C-O-C) for CO2 photoreduction has been explored to address this challenge. The C-O bond was formed by hydrothermal treatment with dicyandiamide and 1,3,5-trichlorotriazine. The experimental and DFT results displayed the optimum oxygen substitution sites and demonstrated that the oxygen doping greatly improved the light utilization efficiency, CO2 affinity, and charge carrier transfer, which enhanced photoreduction efficiency of CO2. The evolution rates of CO (47.2 μmol g-1) and CH4 (9.1 μmol g-1) using O-CN were much higher than that of bulk-CN without a cocatalyst. The main reason was the contribution of the O 2p orbital to the conduction band (CB) and valence band of O-CN, which effectively reduced the electron mass, facilitating electron/hole separation and enhancing its fluidity. Furthermore, the Fermi level also shifted to the bottom of the CB, leading to higher electron density, which further improved the CO2 reduction ability. Our study marks an important step for developing high-performance photocatalysts for reduction of CO2.

Abstract:In this work, a type of doped carbon material with rich edged P atoms co-functionalized by O and N atoms was synthesized via simple solvothermal treatment of P2O5 in formamide, followed by inert annealing. The structures and compositions of O-P/N-C materials were systematically characterized and analyzed. The optimal O-P/N-C900 sample was revealed containing high P content (2.49 at.%) and N content (11.56 at.%). Electrochemical measurements revealed that the O-P/N-C900 sample obtained a very high H2O2 yield rate of 698.4 mmol g_(cat.)^(-1) h-1 and a high Faradic efficiency of 87% in H-type cell. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the edged P atom with the co-functionalization of O and N atoms possessed the lowest energy barrier for promoting the selective 2e‒ ORR, showing good alignment with experiments. Our work provides a new strategy for the controllable synthesis of carbon materials decorated with oxygenated heteroatom doping for electrochemical H2O2 synthesis.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials exhibit high electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is an essential step for several renewable and clean energy systems. To make them alternatives to Pt-based catalysts for the ORR, a deep understanding on the ORR active sites on the carbon surface is needed but remains a major challenge. In nitrogen (N)-doped carbons, the carbon atoms next to pyridinic N are suggested to be the active sites for the ORR. Here we show that non-doped carbon materials (from carbon dots by annealing treatment at 1000 degrees C) create surface defects by removing the carbonate groups from the carbon surface under alkaline conditions (KOH/NaOH). Subsequently, the K+ (Na+) attached to the defects (e.g., hydroxyl group) to form the adjacent C-O--K+ (Na+) groups (C-O--K+ (Na+) pairs), which are suggested to be the real catalytic active sites for the ORR, similar to those of Pt catalysts.

Abstract:Abstract There are growing interests in metal‐free heteroatom‐doped carbons for electrochemical CO2 reduction. Previous studies extensively focus on the effect of N‐doping, and their products severely suffer from low current density (mostly <2 mA cm−2) and limited selectivity (<90%). Here, it is reported that heteroatom codoping offers a promising solution to the above challenge. As a proof of concept, N,P‐codoped mesoporous carbon is prepared by annealing phytic‐acid‐functionalized ZIF‐8 in NH3. In CO2‐saturated 0.5 m NaHCO3, the catalyst enables CO2 reduction to CO with great selectivity close to 100% and large CO partial current density (≈8 mA cm−2), which are, to the best of knowledge, superior to all other relevant competitors. Theoretical simulations show that the improved activity and selectivity are stemmed from the enhanced surface adsorption of *COOH and *CO intermediates as a result of the synergy of N and P codoping.

Abstract:Developing metal-free carbon electrocatalysts with atomically precise structures of hetero-doping is crucial for inventing reliable alternatives to precious metal-based catalysts. Our study reveals that the optimal active site is the edge-exposed N-neighbored carbon site in a chained N-C-C-S structure. Carbon material with N-C-C-S functional doping is controllably synthesized through polymer dehalogenation and heteroatom doping with thiomorpholine at room temperature. The resulting N/S-co-doped carbon with N-C-C-S functionalization, named N-C2-S, exhibits excellent ORR performance compared to other types of N, S-co-doped carbon, and commercial Pt/C. Typically, the N-C2-S sample shows the earliest onset potential of 0.96 V and a high half-wave potential of 0.85 V for promoting ORR. Assembled into an Al-air battery, The N-C2-S delivers an exceptional open-circuit voltage of 1.95 V and a large specific power of 128.1 mW cm 2. The synthesis strategy developed in this work can potentially open up precise functionalization of synthetic carbons with heteroatoms.

Abstract:Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is key to fuel cells and metal-air batteries which are considered as the alternative clean energy. Various carbon materials have been widely researched as ORR electrocatalysts. It has been accepted that heteroatom doping and exposure of the edge sites can effectively improve the activity of carbon materials. In this work, we used a simple method to prepare a novel N, P-dual doped carbon-based catalyst with many holes on the surface. In addition, trace level Co doping in the carbon material forming Co–N–C active species can further enhance the ORR performance. On one hand, the doping can adjust the electronic structure of carbon atoms, which would induce more active sites for ORR. And on the other hand, the holes formed on the surface of carbon nanosheets would expose more edge sites and can improve the intrinsic activity of carbon. Due to the heteroatom doping and the exposed edge sites, the prepared carbon materials showed highly excellent ORR performance, close to that of commercial Pt/C.

Abstract:<p>Chemical doping is verified to be a promising strategy to regulate local electron distribution and further promote the poor intrinsic catalytic activity of graphdiyne. However, the current doping approach still faces problems such as precise doping for creating active sites and the destruction of graphdiyne skeleton calling for high temperature. Here, we achieved charge redistribution on graphdiyne surface through molecule functionalization. A p-type molecule–F4TCNQ (2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) was introduced and the site-defined functionalization was accomplished. Theoretical calculations showed that the charge transfer ability is improved and graphdiyne becomes positively charged. The oxygen reduction electrocatalysis was conducted as a proof of principle, where the electronic states of <em>sp</em> hybridized C active site was tuned toward favorable reaction intermediates' adsorption. Such work from both theoretical prediction and experimental validation, found that molecule functionalization is effective to promote the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction, which creates new possibilities for graphdiyne's applications in different electrochemical reactions.</p>

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals using metal-free carbon catalysts is attractive, but single N-doped carbons suffer from poor efficiency (<90%) and low current density (<2 mA cm−2). Herein, we report a facile and scalable preparation of ternary heteroatoms (N, S, P)-doped carbon electrocatalyst to enhance electrochemical activity, because the multi-heteroatoms with different sizes and electronegativities can modulate the electronic properties to facilitate CO2 localization and provide abundant active sites with enhanced charge-carrier concentrations. It exhibits high activity toward CO2 electroreduction to CO activity with 92% CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) at −0.7 VRHE and low onset overpotential of 270 mV. The promising potential of industrial application is manifested by the high current density of 245 mA cm−2 and stable FECO above 98% in a flow-cell configuration. Moreover, in-situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrates that *COOH is the key intermediate in CO2-to-CO conversion. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of N, S, and P heteroatoms boosts the catalytic activity by greatly decreasing the free energy barrier of *COOH formation. Furthermore, the morphological benefit of hierarchically porous structures plays a synergistic role in improving the CO2 reduction activity.

Abstract:Based on first principles method, the catalytic property of nitrogen-doped graphene is investigated for cathode oxygen reduction reaction. It is revealed that nitrogen clusters other than the isolated one are the most efficient catalytic sites for oxygen reduction. Codoping boron (or Fe, Co) can effectively stabilize these otherwise high energy clusters while keeping the cluster's high activity. Clusters with three or four nitrogens are found to be optimal. Theoretically, catalytic properties similar to or even superior to platinum can be obtained. The results can act as guiding principles for designing new functional materials via codoping.

Abstract:The capability of electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) using nitrogen (N)-doped carbon strongly depends on the N-doping level and their types. In this work, we developed a strategy to generate mesoporous N-doped carbon frameworks with tunable configurations and contents of N dopants, by using a secondary doping process via the treatment of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. The obtained mesoporous N-doped carbon (denoted as MNC-D) served as an efficient electrocatalyst for electroreduction of CO 2 to CO. A high Faradaic efficiency of ∼ 92% and a partial current density for CO of −6.8 mA·cm −2 were achieved at a potential of −0.58 V vs. RHE. Electrochemical analyses further revealed that the active sites within the N-doped carbon catalysts were the pyridinic N and defects generated by the DMF treatment, which enhanced the activation and adsorption CO 2 molecules. Our study suggests a new approach to develop efficient carbon-based catalysts for potential scalable CO 2 RR to fuels and chemicals.

Abstract:We report a facile and versatile method for fabrication of multiheteroatom-doped hierarchically porous carbon with a large specific surface area, using the 3D network constructed by ZIF-8 coated wormlike micelles as template. The uniform and highly pure wormlike micelles developed in our laboratory is essential, because they not only are responsible for the formation of hierarchical porosity, but also play as a versatile platform for multiheteroatoms doping. In a primary experiment, S, N, B, and P heteroatoms were doped conveniently and the resultant porous carbons have the excellent oxygen reduction reaction performance comparable to the commercial 20% Pt/C.

Abstract:The rational design and preparation of nonprecious metal-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts to facilitate electron and mass transport are of great significance in oxygen-involved energy applications. Herein, a stepwise approach to synthesize a type of hierarchically porous N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) grafted onto zinc-based coordination polymer derived carbon nanomaterials (M-NCNT, M = Fe/Co/Ni) is proposed. At first, an isostructural zinc-based metal-organic framework (MOF) to HKUST-1(Cu) (ZnHKUST-1) is solvothermally prepared, and then under pyrolysis to obtain MOF-derived porous carbon. After the secondary calcination, the in-situ formed N-doped CNTs are efficiently catalyzed by iron group metal-based nanoparticles (Fe/Co/Ni), which are thermally reduced by porous carbon together with additional urea. The synergistic effect between ultrahigh porosity, large surface area, suitable N-doping, high graphitization degree, and ultrafine metal particles prompts M-NCNT series to exhibit satisfactory electrocatalysis in oxygen reduction. Among them, Fe-NCNT owns the optimal ORR activity with high positive onset potential (0.987 V), half-wave potential (0.860 V) and large diffusion-limited current density (4.893 mA cm-2). Meanwhile, it shows a high current retention of 90.7% after the 24-hour stability, and the obtained Zn-air battery by Fe-NCNT with open-circuit voltage of 1.44 V owns moderate capacity and satisfying stability. The demonstrated method to prepare hierarchically porous N-doped carbon nanomaterials stemmed from MOF precursors unfolds a new route for the facile construction of efficient nanocatalysts for advanced energy applications.

Abstract:Herein, we report an original strategy to fabricate N/B co-doped hollow carbon (denoted as NB-HC) with the assistance of tannic acid. Inspired by its inherent porous structures, we used ZIF-8 as a structural template and a N-doping source. Tannic acid (TA) as a secondary material is uniformly coated on the surface of ZIF-8 to obtain ZIF-8@TA core-shell composites. The TA-modified shell mediates the post-formation of boron acid-polyol bond, where 1,4-benzene diboronic acid (BDBA) is used as a boron-containing reactant and doping source. After carbonization, the composite successfully turns into hollow N/B co-doped carbon with a high surface area of 936 m(2) g(-1). It exhibits a pronounced ORR reactivity with an onset potential of -0.12 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) along with superb methanol cross-over tolerance and long-term stability. The first-principles calculation proves that the synergistic effect arising from N and B dopants can create active sites; therefore, the value of free energy change in the rate-determining step decreases. This elucidates that the homogeneously synergistic coupling of B and N in the carbon structure and hierarchical porous structures endow the as-prepared NB-HC with enhanced ORR parameters.
