Abstract:Abstract Characterizations of pseudoultrametric-preserving functions and semimetric-preserving functions are found. The structural properties of pseudoultrametrics which can be represented as a composition of an ultrametric and ultrametric-pseudoultrametric-preserving function are obtained. A dual form of Pongsriiam-Termwuttipong characterization of the ultrametric-preserving functions is described. We also introduce a concept of k -separating family of functions and use it to characterize the ultrametric spaces.

Abstract:An ultrametric preserving function $f$ is said to be strongly ultrametric preserving if ultrametrics $d$ and $f \circ d$ define the same topology on $X$ for each ultrametric space $(X,d)$. The set of all strongly ultrametric preserving functions is characterized by several distinctive features. In particular, it is shown that an ultrametric preserving $f$ belongs to this set iff $f$ preserves the property to be compact.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{R}^{+}=[0, \infty)$ and let $\mathbf{End}_{\mathbb{R}^+}$ be the set of all endomorphisms of the monoid $(\mathbb{R}^+, \vee)$. The set $\mathbf{End}_{\mathbb{R}^+}$ is a monoid with respect to the operation of the function composition $g \circ f$. It is shown that $g : \mathbb{R}^+ \to \mathbb{R}^+$ is pseudoultrametric-preserving iff $g \in \mathbf{End}_{\mathbb{R}^+}$. In particular, a function $f : \mathbb{R}^+ \to \mathbb{R}^+$ is ultrametrics-preserving iff it is an endomorphism of $(\mathbb{R}^+,\vee)$ with kernel consisting only the zero point. We prove that a given $\mathbf{A} \subseteq \mathbf{End}_{\mathbb{R}^+}$ is a submonoid of $(\mathbf{End}, \circ)$ iff there is a class $\mathbf{X}$ of pseudoultrametric spaces such that $\mathbf{A}$ coincides with the set of all functions which preserve the spaces from $\mathbf{X}$. An explicit construction of such $\mathbf{X}$ is given.

Abstract:Following a review of metric, ultrametric and generalized ultrametric, we review their application in data analysis. We show how they allow us to explore both geometry and topology of information, starting with measured data. Some themes are then developed based on the use of metric, ultrametric and generalized ultrametric in logic. In particular we study approximation chains in an ultrametric or generalized ultrametric context. Our aim in this work is to extend the scope of data analysis by facilitating reasoning based on the data analysis; and to show how quantitative and qualitative data analysis can be incorporated into logic programming.

Abstract:The problems of continuation of a partially defined metric and a partially defined ultrametric were considered in [12] and [13], respectively. Using the language of graph theory we generalize the criteria of existence of continuation obtained in these papers. For these purposes we use the concept of a triangle function introduced by M. Bessenyei and Z. Páles in [6], which gives a generalization of the triangle inequality in metric spaces. The obtained result allows us to get criteria of the existence of continuation for a wide class of semimetrics including not only metrics and ultrametrics, but also multiplicative metrics and semimetrics with power triangle inequality. Moreover, the explicit formula for the maximal continuations is also obtained.

Persistent Sullivan Minimal Models of Metric Spaces

Abstract:This is a note of the author's ongoing work on persistent Sullivan minimal models. Sullivan minimal models have been important tools in rational homotopy theory for representing topological spaces using simplified algebraic structures. In this note, we study persistent Sullivan minimal models for persistent spaces and establish their stability results. For the case of Vietoris-Rips filtrations arising from metric spaces, such stability results can provide a stronger lower bound estimate of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between metric spaces than the standard persistent homology.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate some topological properties of partial metric spaces (in short PMS). We give some relationship between metric-like PMS, sequentially isosceles PMS and sequentially equilateral PMS. We also prove a type of Urysohn’s lemma for metric-like PMS. By applying the construction of Hartman–Mycielski, we show that every bounded PMS can be isometrically embedded into a pathwise connected and locally pathwise connected PMS. In the end, we show that a partial metric space is compact iff it is totally bounded and complete.

They provide generalized solutions to functional equa- tions which do not have any solutions among the real functions or the distributions. In this paper we introduce a new class of ultrafunctions, called tempered ultrafunctions, which are somewhat related to the tem- pered distributions and present some interesting peculiarities.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the behavioral pseudometrics for probabilistic systems, which are a quantitative analogue of probabilistic bisimilarity in the sense that the distance zero captures the probabilistic bisimilarity. The model we are interested in is probabilistic automata, which are based on state transition systems and make a clear distinction between probabilistic and nondeterministic choices. The pseudometrics are defined as the greatest fixpoint of a monotonic functional on the complete lattice of state metrics. A distinguished characteristic of this pseudometric lies in that it does not discount the future, which addresses some algorithmic challenges to compute the distance of two states in the model. We solve this problem by providing an approximation algorithm: up to any desired degree of accuracy ε, the distance can be approximated to within ε in time exponential in the size of the model and logarithmic in 1ε. One of the key ingredients of our algorithm is to express a pseudometric being a post-fixpoint as the elementary sentence over real closed fields, which allows us to exploit Tarski’s decision procedure, together with the binary search to approximate the behavioral distance.
Approximating Diffusion on Finite Multi-Topology Systems Using Ultrametrics

Abstract:Motivated by multi-topology building and city model data, first a lossless representation of multiple $T_0$-topologies on a given finite set by a vertex-edge-weighted graph is given, and the subdominant ultrametric of the associated weighted graph distance matrix is proposed as an index structure for these data. This is applied in a heuristic parallel topological sort algorithm for edge-weighted directed acyclic graphs. Such structured data are of interest in simulation of processes like heat flows on building or city models on distributed processors. With this in view, the bulk of this article calculates the spectra of certain unbounded self-adjoint $p$-adic Laplacian operators on the $L^2$-spaces of a compact open subdomain of the $p$-adic number field associated with a finite graph $G$ with respect to the restricted Haar measure. as well as to a Radon measure coming from an ultrametric on the vertices of $G$ with the help of $p$-adic polynomial interpolation. In the end, error bounds are given for the solutions of the corresponding heat equations by finite approximations of such operators.

Nearly Tight Bounds on Testing of Metric Properties

Abstract:Given a non-negative $n \times n$ matrix viewed as a set of distances between $n$ points, we consider the property testing problem of deciding if it is a metric. We also consider the same problem for two special classes of metrics, tree metrics and ultrametrics. For general metrics, our paper is the first to consider these questions. We prove an upper bound of $O(n^{2/3}/\epsilon^{4/3})$ on the query complexity for this problem. Our algorithm is simple, but the analysis requires great care in bounding the variance on the number of violating triangles in a sample. When $\epsilon$ is a slowly decreasing function of $n$ (rather than a constant, as is standard), we prove a lower bound of matching dependence on $n$ of $\Omega (n^{2/3})$, ruling out any property testers with $o(n^{2/3})$ query complexity unless their dependence on $1/\epsilon$ is super-polynomial. Next, we turn to tree metrics and ultrametrics. While there were known upper and lower bounds, we considerably improve these bounds showing essentially tight bounds of $\tilde{O}(1/\epsilon )$ on the sample complexity. We also show a lower bound of $\Omega ( 1/\epsilon^{4/3} )$ on the query complexity. Our upper bounds are derived by doing a more careful analysis of a natural, simple algorithm. For the lower bounds, we construct distributions on NO instances, where it is hard to find a witness showing that these are not ultrametrics.

Metrical properties of exponentially growing partial quotients

Abstract:A fundamental challenge within the metric theory of continued fractions involves quantifying sets of real numbers, when represented using continued fractions, exhibit partial quotients that grow at specific rates. For any positive function $\Phi$, Wang-Wu theorem (2008) comprehensively describes the Hausdorff dimension of the set \begin{equation*} \EE_1(\Phi):=\left\{x\in [0, 1): a_n(x)\geq \Phi(n) \ {\rm for \ infinitely \ many} \ n\in \N\right\}. \end{equation*} Various generalisations of this set exist, such as substituting one partial quotient with the product of consecutive partial quotients in the aforementioned set which has connections with the improvements to Dirichlet's theorem, and many other sets of similar nature. Establishing the upper bound of the Hausdorff dimension of such sets is significantly easier than proving the lower bound. In this paper, we present a unified approach to get an optimal lower bound for many known setups, including results by Wang-Wu [Adv. Math., 2008], Huang-Wu-Xu [Israel J. Math. 2020], Bakhtawar-Bos-Hussain [Nonlinearity 2020], and several others, and also provide a new theorem derived as an application of our main result. We do this by finding an exact Hausdorff dimension of the set $$S_m(A_0,\ldots,A_{m-1}) \defeq \left\{ x\in[0,1): \, c_i A_i^n \le a_{n+i}(x) < 2c_i A_i^n,0 \le i \le m-1 \ \text{for infinitely many } n\in\N \right\},$$ where each partial quotient grows exponentially and the base is given by a parameter $A_i>1$. For proper choices of $A_i$'s, this set serves as a subset for sets under consideration, providing an optimal lower bound of Hausdorff dimension in all of them. The crux of the proof lies in introducing of multiple probability measures consistently distributed over the Cantor-type subset of $S_m(A_0,\ldots,A_{m-1})$.

Note on the metric entropy for multivalued maps

Abstract:The main aim of this note is to point out by means of counter-examples that some arguments of the proofs of two theorems about a "half variational principle" for multivalued maps, formulated recently by Vivas and Sirvent [Metric entropy for set-valued maps, Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. B, 27 (2022), pp. 6589-6604], are false and that our corrected versions require rather restrictive additional assumptions. Nevertheless, we will be able to establish the full variational principle for a special subclass of multivalued lower semicontinuous maps with convex compact values on a compact subset of a Banach space.

Abstract:We use Fra\" iss\'e theoretic methods to construct several universal and ultrahomogeneous Polish metric structures. Namely, universal and ultrahomogeneous Polish metric space equipped with countably many closed subsets of its powers, universal and ultrahomogeneous Polish metric space equipped with a closed subset of the product of itself and some fixed compact metric space, and universal and ultrahomogeneous Polish metric space equipped with an L-Lipschitz function, for an arbitrary positive L, to some fixed Polish metric space. These results are direct generalization of the classical result of P. Urysohn. Possible applications are discussed.
Ultralimits of Wasserstein spaces and metric measure spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below

Abstract:We investigate the stability of the Wasserstein distance, a metric structure on the space of probability measures arising from the theory of optimal transport, under metric ultralimits. We first show that if $(X_{i},d_{i})_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ is a sequence of metric spaces with metric ultralimit $(\hat{X},\hat{d})$, then the p-Wasserstein space $(\mathcal{P}_{p}(\hat{X}),W_{p})$ embeds isometrically in a canonical fashion into the metric ultralimit of the sequence of p-Wasserstein spaces $(\mathcal{P}_{p}(X_{i}),W_{p})$. Second, using a notion of ultralimit of metric measure spaces modeled on the one introduced by Elek, we use the machinery of ultralimits of Wasserstein spaces to prove that an ultralimit of CD(K,$\infty$) spaces is a CD(K,$\infty$) space. This provides a new proof that the CD(K,$\infty$) property is stable under pointed measured Gromov convergence. Along the way, we establish some basic results on how the Loeb measure construction interacts with Wasserstein distances as well as integral functionals, which may be of independent interest.

On metrics robust to noise and deformations

Abstract:We study the properties of a family of distances between functions of a single variable. These distances are examples of integral probability metrics, and have been used previously for comparing probability measures on the line; special cases include the Earth Mover's Distance and the Kolmogorov Metric. We examine their properties for general signals, proving that they are robust to a broad class of deformations. We also establish corresponding robustness results for the induced sliced distances between multivariate functions. Finally, we establish error bounds for approximating the univariate metrics from finite samples, and prove that these approximations are robust to additive Gaussian noise. The results are illustrated in numerical experiments, which include comparisons with Wasserstein distances.

First, we will establish some fundamental properties of the mean Hausdorff dimension. Furthermore, it is important to note that the metric mean dimension and mean Hausdorff dimension depend on the metric chosen for $M$. In this work, we will prove that, for a fixed dynamical system $f:M\rightarrow M$, the functions $\text{mdim}_{\text{M}}(M, f):M(\tau)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}\cup \{\infty\}$ and $\text{mdim}_{\text{H}}(M, f):M(\tau)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}\cup \{\infty\}$ are not continuous. Here, $ \text{mdim}_{\text{M}}(M, f)(\rho)= \text{mdim}_{\text{M}}(M,\rho, f)$ and $ \text{mdim}_{\text{H}}(M, f)(\rho)= \text{mdim}_{\text{H}}(M,\rho, f)$ represent, respectively, the metric mean dimension and the mean Hausdorff dimension of $f$ with respect to $\rho\in M(\tau)$ and $M(\tau)$ is the set consisting of all equivalent metrics to $d$ on $M$. Furthermore, we will present examples of certain classes of metrics for which the metric mean dimension is a continuous function.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{X}$ be a class of metric spaces and let $\mathbf{P}_{\mathbf{X}}$ be the set of all $f:[0, \infty)\to [0, \infty)$ preserving $\mathbf{X},$ $(Y, f\circ\rho)\in\mathbf{X}$ whenever $(Y, \rho)\in\mathbf{X}.$ For arbitrary subset $\mathbf{A}$ of the set of all metric preserving functions we show that the equality $\mathbf{P}_{\mathbf{X}}=\mathbf{A}$ has a solution iff $\mathbf{A}$ is a monoid with respect to the operation of function composition. In particular, for the set $\mathbf{SI}$ of all amenable subadditive increasing functions there is a class $\mathbf{X}$ of metric spaces such that $\mathbf{P}_{\mathbf{X}}=\mathbf{SI}$ holds, which gives a positive answer to the question of paper [1].
