Abstract:New local ultrametricity measures for finite metric data are proposed through the viewpoint that their Vietoris-Rips corners are samples from p-adic Mumford curves endowed with a Radon measure coming from a regular differential 1-form. This is experimentally applied to the iris dataset.

Abstract:Motivated by multi-topology building and city model data, first a lossless representation of multiple $T_0$-topologies on a given finite set by a vertex-edge-weighted graph is given, and the subdominant ultrametric of the associated weighted graph distance matrix is proposed as an index structure for these data. This is applied in a heuristic parallel topological sort algorithm for edge-weighted directed acyclic graphs. Such structured data are of interest in simulation of processes like heat flows on building or city models on distributed processors. With this in view, the bulk of this article calculates the spectra of certain unbounded self-adjoint $p$-adic Laplacian operators on the $L^2$-spaces of a compact open subdomain of the $p$-adic number field associated with a finite graph $G$ with respect to the restricted Haar measure. as well as to a Radon measure coming from an ultrametric on the vertices of $G$ with the help of $p$-adic polynomial interpolation. In the end, error bounds are given for the solutions of the corresponding heat equations by finite approximations of such operators.

On locally symmetric polynomial metrics: Riemannian and Finslerian surfaces

Abstract:In the paper we investigate locally symmetric polynomial metrics in special cases of Riemannian and Finslerian surfaces. The Riemannian case will be presented by a collection of basic results (regularity of second root metrics) and formulas up to Gauss curvature. In case of Finslerian surfaces we formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for a locally symmetric fourth root metric in 2D to be positive definite. They are given in terms of the coefficients of the polynomial metric to make checking the positive definiteness as simple and direct as possible. Explicit examples are also presented. The situation is more complicated in case of spaces of dimension more than two. Some necessary conditions and an explicit example are given for a positive definite locally symmetric polynomial metric in 3D. Computations are supported by the MAPLE mathematics software (LinearAlgebra).

Regularity of sets of finite fractional perimeter and nonlocal minimal surfaces in metric measure spaces

Abstract:In the setting of a doubling metric measure space $(X,d,\mu)$, we study regularity of sets whose characteristic functions belong to the Besov class $B^s_{1,1}(X)$. Following a result of Visintin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we provide a sufficient condition for membership in $B^s_{1,1}(X)$ given in terms of the upper Minkowski codimension of the regularized boundary of the set. We also show that if the characteristic function of a set belongs to $B^s_{1,1}(X)$, then its measure theoretic boundary has codimension $s$ Hausdorff measure zero. To the best of our knowledge, this result is new even in the Euclidean setting. By studying certain fat Cantor sets, we provide examples illustrating that the converses of these results do not hold in general. In the doubling metric measure space setting, we then consider minimizers of the nonlocal perimeter functional $\mathcal{J}_\Omega^s$, extending the definition introduced by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre, and Savin in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and prove existence, uniform density, and porosity results for minimizers.

Abstract:We obtain a volume growth and curvature decay result for various classes of complete, noncompact Riemannian metrics in dimension 4; in particular our method applies to anti-self-dual or Kähler metrics with zero scalar curvature, and metrics with harmonic curvature. Similar results were obtained for Einstein metrics in [And89], [BKN89], [Tia90], but our analysis differs from the Einstein case in that (1) we consider more generally a fourth order system in the metric, and (2) we do not assume any pointwise Ricci curvature bound.

Abstract:Given a sample Y from an unknown manifold X embedded in Euclidean space, it is possible to recover the homology groups of X by building a Vietoris–Rips or Čech simplicial complex on top of the vertex set Y. However, these simplicial complexes need not inherit the metric structure of the manifold, in particular when Y is infinite. Indeed, a simplicial complex is not even metrizable if it is not locally finite. We instead consider metric thickenings, called the Vietoris–Rips and Čech thickenings, which are equipped with the 1-Wasserstein metric in place of the simplicial complex topology. We show that for Euclidean subsets X with positive reach, the thickenings satisfy metric analogues of Hausmann's theorem and the nerve lemma (the metric Vietoris–Rips and Čech thickenings of X are homotopy equivalent to X for scale parameters less than the reach). To our knowledge this is the first version of Hausmann's theorem for Vietoris–Rips constructions on entire Euclidean submanifolds (as opposed to Riemannian manifolds), and our result also extends to non-manifold shapes (as not all sets of positive reach are manifolds). In contrast to Hausmann's original proof, our homotopy equivalence is a deformation retraction, is realized by canonical maps in both directions, and furthermore can be proven to be a homotopy equivalence via simple linear homotopies from the map compositions to the corresponding identity maps.

Abstract:This article provides an exposition of recent methodologies for nonparametric analysis of digital observations on images and other non-Euclidean objects. Fréchet means of distributions on metric spaces, such as manifolds and stratified spaces, have played an important role in this endeavor. Apart from theoretical issues of uniqueness of the Fréchet minimizer and the asymptotic distribution of the sample Fréchet mean under uniqueness, applications to image analysis are highlighted. In addition, nonparametric Bayes theory is brought to bear on the problems of density estimation and classification on manifolds.

Abstract:We generalize a bi-Lipschitz extension result of David and Semmes from Euclidean spaces to complete metric measure spaces with controlled geometry (Ahlfors regularity and supporting a Poincaré inequality). In particular, we find sharp conditions on metric measure spaces $X$ so that any bi-Lipschitz embedding of a subset of the real line into $X$ extends to a bi-Lipschitz embedding of the whole line. Along the way, we prove that if the complement of an open subset $Y$ of $X$ has small Assouad dimension, then it is a uniform domain. Finally, we prove a quantitative approximation of continua in $X$ by bi-Lipschitz curves.

Sparse Approximation of the Subdivision-Rips Bifiltration for Doubling Metrics

Abstract:The Vietoris-Rips filtration, the standard filtration on metric data in topological data analysis, is notoriously sensitive to outliers. Sheehy's subdivision-Rips bifiltration $\mathcal{SR}(-)$ is a density-sensitive refinement that is robust to outliers in a strong sense, but whose 0-skeleton has exponential size. For $X$ a finite metric space of constant doubling dimension and fixed $\epsilon>0$, we construct a $(1+\epsilon)$-homotopy interleaving approximation of $\mathcal{SR}(X)$ whose $k$-skeleton has size $O(|X|^{k+2})$. For $k\geq 1$ constant, the $k$-skeleton can be computed in time $O(|X|^{k+3})$.

Abstract:Reparametrization invariant Sobolev metrics on spaces of regular curves have been shown to be of importance in the field of mathematical shape analysis. For practical applications, one usually discretizes the space of smooth curves and considers the induced Riemannian metric on a finite dimensional approximation space. Surprisingly, the theoretical properties of the corresponding finite dimensional Riemannian manifolds have not yet been studied in detail, which is the content of the present article. Our main theorem concerns metric and geodesic completeness and mirrors the results of the infinite dimensional setting as obtained by Bruveris, Michor and Mumford.

Abstract:It is shown that a locally finite ultrametric space $(X, d)$ is generated by labeled tree if and only if, for every open ball $B \subseteq X$, there is a point $c \in B$ such that $d(x, c) = \operatorname{diam} B$ whenever $x \in B$ and $x \neq c$. For every finite ultrametric space $Y$ we construct an ultrametric space $Z$ having the smallest possible number of points such that $Z$ is generated by labeled tree and $Y$ is isometric to a subspace of $Z$. It is proved that for a given $Y$, such a space $Z$ is unique up to isometry.

The first of these is a point cloud data set that has $\mathbb{R}^2$ as its ambient space, and is therefore very visual. the second deals with a very abstract space which arises through the study of non-transitive dice.

Abstract:We study the geometry of spaces of fitrations on a Noetherian local domain. We introduce a metric $d_1$ on the space of saturated filtrations, inspired by the Darvas metric in complex geometry, such that it is a geodesic metric space. In the toric case, using Newton-Okounkov bodies, we identify the space of saturated monomial filtrations with a subspace of $L^1_\mathrm{loc}$. We also consider several other topologies on such spaces and study the semi-continuity of the log canonical threshold function in the spirit of Kollár-Demailly. Moreover, there is a natural lattice structure on the space of saturated filtrations, which is a generalization of the classical result that the ideals of a ring form a lattice.

Abstract:In the applied algebraic topology community, the persistent homology induced by the Vietoris-Rips simplicial filtration is a standard method for capturing topological information from metric spaces. In this paper, we consider a different, more geometric way of generating persistent homology of metric spaces which arises by first embedding a given metric space into a larger space and then considering thickenings of the original space inside this ambient metric space. In the course of doing this, we construct an appropriate category for studying this notion of persistent homology and show that, in a category theoretic sense, the standard persistent homology of the Vietoris-Rips filtration is isomorphic to our geometric persistent homology provided that the ambient metric space satisfies a property called injectivity. As an application of this isomorphism result we are able to precisely characterize the type of intervals that appear in the persistence barcodes of the Vietoris-Rips filtration of any compact metric space and also to give succinct proofs of the characterization of the persistent homology of products and metric gluings of metric spaces. Our results also permit proving several bounds on the length of intervals in the Vietoris-Rips barcode by other metric invariants. Finally, as another application, we connect this geometric persistent homology to the notion of filling radius of manifolds introduced by Gromov \cite{G07} and show some consequences related to (1) the homotopy type of the Vietoris-Rips complexes of spheres which follow from work of M.~Katz and (2) characterization (rigidity) results for spheres in terms of their Vietoris-Rips persistence barcodes which follow from work of F.~Wilhelm.

Abstract:Abstract Characterizations of pseudoultrametric-preserving functions and semimetric-preserving functions are found. The structural properties of pseudoultrametrics which can be represented as a composition of an ultrametric and ultrametric-pseudoultrametric-preserving function are obtained. A dual form of Pongsriiam-Termwuttipong characterization of the ultrametric-preserving functions is described. We also introduce a concept of k -separating family of functions and use it to characterize the ultrametric spaces.

Abstract:We prove that if $(\mathcal{M},d)$ is an $n$-point metric space that embeds quasisymmetrically into a Hilbert space, then for every $\tau>0$ there is a random subset $\mathcal{Z}$ of $\mathcal{M}$ such that for any pair of points $x,y\in \mathcal{M}$ with $d(x,y)\ge \tau$, the probability that both $x\in \mathcal{Z}$ and $d(y,\mathcal{Z})\ge \beta\tau/\sqrt{1+\log (|B(y,\kappa \beta \tau)|/|B(y,\beta \tau)|)}$ is $\Omega(1)$, where $\kappa>1$ is a universal constant and $\beta>0$ depends only on the modulus of the quasisymmetric embedding. The proof relies on a refinement of the Arora--Rao--Vazirani rounding technique. Among the applications of this result is that the largest possible Euclidean distortion of an $n$-point subset of $\ell_1$ is $\Theta(\sqrt{\log n})$, and the integrality gap of the Goemans--Linial semidefinite program for the Sparsest Cut problem on inputs of size $n$ is $\Theta(\sqrt{\log n})$. Multiple further applications are given.

Abstract:Spherically symmetric metrics and Randers metrics form two rich classes of Finsler metrics. In this paper, we find an equation that characterizes pointwise projectively related spherically symmetric metrics. Some applications are given. In particular, by using known spherically symmetric metrics, we produce a lot of Randers metrics of quadratic Weyl curvature which are non-trivial in the sense that they are not of Weyl type.

Abstract:For all $1\leq m\leq n-1$, we investigate the interaction of locally finite measures in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the family of $m$-dimensional Lipschitz graphs. For instance, we characterize Radon measures $\mu$, which are carried by Lipschitz graphs in the sense that there exist graphs $\Gamma_1,\Gamma_2,\dots$ such that $\mu(\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\bigcup_1^\infty\Gamma_i)=0$, using only countably many evaluations of the measure. This problem in geometric measure theory was classically studied within smaller classes of measures, e.g.~for the restrictions of $m$-dimensional Hausdorff measure $\mathcal{H}^m$ to $E\subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ with $0<\mathcal{H}^m(E)<\infty$. However, an example of Csörnyei, Käenmäki, Rajala, and Suomala shows that classical methods are insufficient to detect when a general measure charges a Lipschitz graph. To develop a characterization of Lipschitz graph rectifiability for arbitrary Radon measures, we look at the behavior of coarse doubling ratios of the measure on dyadic cubes that intersect conical annuli. This extends a characterization of graph rectifiability for pointwise doubling measures by Naples by mimicking the approach used in the characterization of Radon measures carried by rectifiable curves by Badger and Schul.
