Abstract:We investigate the existence problem of group invariant matrices using algebraic approaches. We extend the usual concept of multipliers to group rings with cyclotomic integers as coefficients. This concept is combined with the field descent method and rational idempotents to develop new non-existence results.

Abstract:We solve the smallest four open cases of weighing matrices, W(n,16) for n=23,25,27,29 , which completes the existence question for weight 16. In addition we solve the open two-core matrix W(102,97) . There is a common theme for the construction of all such matrices, which is called here partitioned group matrices . The study of partitioned group matrices generalizes some well known constructions, namely the one-core and two-core circulant constructions, with or without borders, block circulant matrices, Legendre pairs and many more. Such constructions generalize to arbitrary groups and carry an algebraic structure which we analyze in some cases. Our methods here can be made practical for larger weighing matrices. We also add a complete analysis of the possible location of the zeros (crystal sets) in two-core weighing matrices of co-weight 5.

$Γ$-conjugate weight enumerators and invariant theory

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field, $\Gamma $ a finite group of field automorphisms of $K$, $F$ the $\Gamma $-fixed field in $K$ and $G\leq $GL$_v(K)$ a finite matrix group. Then the action of $\Gamma $ defines a grading on the symmetric algebra of the $F$-space $K^v$ which we use to introduce the notion of homogeneous $\Gamma $-conjugate invariants of $G$. We apply this new grading in invariant theory to broaden the connection between codes and invariant theory by introducing $\Gamma $-conjugate complete weight enumerators of codes. The main result of this paper applies the theory from Nebe, Rains, Sloane to show that under certain extra conditions these new weight enumerators generate the ring of $\Gamma $-conjugate invariants of the associated Clifford-Weil groups. As an immediate consequence we obtain a result by Bannai etal that the complex conjugate weight enumerators generate the ring of complex conjugate invariants of the complex Clifford group. Also the Schur-Weyl duality conjectured and partly shown by Gross etal can be derived from our main result.

Cohomology-Developed Matrices -- constructing families of weighing matrices and automorphism actions

Abstract:The aim of this work is to construct families of weighing matrices via their automorphism group action. This action is determined from the $0,1,2$-cohomology groups of the underlying abstract group. As a consequence, some old and new families of weighing matrices are constructed. These include the Paley Conference, the Projective-Space, the Grassmannian, and the Flag-Variety weighing matrices. We develop a general theory relying on low dimensional group-cohomology for constructing automorphism group actions, and in turn obtain structured matrices that we call \emph{Cohomology-Developed matrices}. This "Cohomology-Development" generalizes the Cocyclic and Group Developments. The Algebraic structure of modules of Cohomology-Developed matrices is discussed, and an orthogonality result is deduced. We also use this algebraic structure to define the notion of \emph{quasiproducts}, which is a generalization of the Kronecker-product.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an infinite-dimensional real classical group containing the complete unitary group (or complete orthogonal group) as a subgroup. Then $G$ generates a category of double cosets (train) and any unitary representation of $G$ can be canonically extended to the train. We prove a technical lemma about the complete group $GL$ of infinite $p$-adic matrices with integer coefficients, this lemma implies that the phenomenon of automatic extension of unitary representations to trains is valid for infinite-dimensional $p$-adic groups.

Vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions

Abstract: Determination of quasi-invariant generalized functions is important for a variety of problems in representation theory, notably character theory and restriction problems. In this note, we review some new and easy-to-use techniques to show vanishing of quasi-invariant generalized functions, developed in the recent work of the authors (Uniqueness of Ginzburg-Rallis models: the Archimedean case, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 363, (2011), 2763-2802). The first two techniques involve geometric notions attached to submanifolds, which we call metrical properness and unipotent $\chi$-incompatibility. The third one is analytic in nature, and it arises from the first occurrence phenomenon in Howe correspondence. We also highlight how these techniques quickly lead to two well-known uniqueness results, on trilinear forms and Whittaker models.
Geometric invariant theory for graded additive groups

Abstract:We consider geometric invariant theory for \emph{graded additive groups}, groups of the form $\mathbb{G}_a^r\rtimes_w\mathbb{G}_m$ such that the $\mathbb{G}_m$-action on $\mathbb{G}_a^r$ is a scalar multiplication with weight $w\in\mathbb{N}_+$. We provide an algorithm of equivariant birational modifications, such that we can apply the geometric invariant theory of Bérczi-Doran-Hawes-Kirwan. In particular, the geometric $\mathbb{G}_a^r$-quotient exists. This complements Bérczi-Doran-Hawes-Kirwan, in the special case of one grading weight.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group, and let $\mathrm{Irr}(G)$ denote the set of irreducible complex characters of $G$. An element $x$ of $G$ is said to be vanishing, if for some $\chi$ in $\mathrm{Irr}(G)$, we have $\chi(x)=0$. Also the element $x$ is called rational if $x$ is conjugate to $x^i$ for every integer $i$ co-prime to the order of $x$. We define the weight of $G$ as $\omega(G):=(\sum_{\chi\in \mathrm{Irr}(G)}\chi(1))^2/|G|$. In this paper, we show that for every rational non-vanishing element $x\in G$, the order of $C_G(x)$ is at least $\omega(G)$.

Abstract:We describe the -invariant of a semisimple algebraic group over a generic splitting field of a Tits algebra of in terms of the -invariant over the base field. As a consequence we prove a 10-year-old conjecture of Quéguiner-Mathieu, Semenov, and Zainoulline on the -invariant of groups of type . In the case of type we also provide explicit formulas for the first component and in some cases for the second component of the -invariant.

Abstract:We present necessary and sufficient conditions under which the sum of two group invertible elements in a ring is group invertible. As applications, we establish the existence of group inverses of certain 2 × 2 block-operator matrices over a Banach space. These generalize the known results, e.g., Zhou, Chen and Zhu ( Comm. Algebra 48 (2020), 676–690) and Benítez, Liu and Zhu ( Linear Multilinear Algebra 59 (2011), 279–289).

Abstract:Let G be an abelian group, and let F(G) be the free commutative monoid with basis G . For Ω⊂F(G) , define the universal zero-sum invariant dΩ(G) to be the smallest integer l such that every sequence T over G of length l has a subsequence in Ω . The invariant dΩ(G) unifies many classical zero-sum invariants. Let B(G) be the submonoid of F(G) consisting of all zero-sum sequences over G , and let A(G) be the set consisting of all minimal zero-sum sequences over G . The empty sequence, which is the identity of B(G) , is denoted by ε . The well-known Davenport constant D(G) of the group G can be also represented as dB(G)∖{ε}(G) or dA(G)(G) in terms of the universal zero-sum invariant. Notice that A(G) is the unique minimal generating set of the monoid B(G) from the point of view of Algebra. Hence, it would be interesting to determine whether A(G) is minimal to represent the Davenport constant or not for a general finite abelian group G . In this paper, we show that except for a few special classes of groups, there always exists a proper subset Ω of A(G) such that dΩ(G)=D(G) . Furthermore, in the setting of finite cyclic groups, we discuss the distributions of all minimal sets by determining their intersections. By connecting the universal zero-sum invariant with weights, we make a study of zero-sum problems in the setting of infinite abelian groups. The universal zero-sum invariant dΩ;Ψ(G) with weights set Ψ of homomorphisms of groups is introduced for all abelian groups. The weighted Davenport constant DΨ(G) (being an special form of the universal invariant with weights) is also investigated for infinite abelian groups. Among other results, we obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions such that DΨ(G)<∞ in terms of the weights set Ψ when |Ψ| is finite. In doing this, by using the Neumann Theorem on Cover Theory for groups we establish a connection between the existence of a finite cover of an abelian group G by cosets of some given subgroups of G , and the finiteness of weighted Davenport constant.

Abstract:Orthogonal designs and weighing matrices have many applications in areas such as coding theory, cryptography, wireless networking and communication. In this paper, we first show that if positive integer $k$ cannot be written as the sum of three integer squares, then there does not exist any skew-symmetric weighing matrix of order $4n$ and weight $k$, where $n$ is an odd positive integer. Then we show that for any square $k$, there is an integer $N(k)$ such that for each $n\ge N(k)$, there is a symmetric weighing matrix of order $n$ and weight $k$. Moreover, we improve some of the asymptotic existence results for weighing matrices obtained by Eades, Geramita and Seberry.

Abstract:We consider three isogeny invariants of abelian varieties over finite fields: the Galois group, Newton polygon, and the angle rank. Motivated by work of Dupuy, Kedlaya, and Zureick-Brown, we define a new invariant called the weighted permutation representation which encompasses all three of these invariants and use it to study the subtle relationships between them. We use this permutation representation to classify the triples of invariants that occur for abelian surfaces and simple abelian threefolds.

Abstract:We extend the notion of the $J$-invariant to arbitrary semisimple linear algebraic groups and provide complete decompositions for the normed Chow motives of all generically quasi-split twisted flag varieties. Besides, we establish some combinatorial patterns for normed Chow groups and motives and provide some explicit formulae for values of the $J$-invariant.

Abstract:Let R = C[x(1),x(2), . . . ,x(n)]/(f) where f is a weighted homogeneous polynomial defining an isolated singularity at the origin. Then R and Der (R,R) are graded. It is well-known that Der (R,R) does not have a negatively graded component. Wahl conjectured that this is still true for R = C[x(1), x(2), . . . ,x(n)]/(f(1),f(2), . . . ,f(m)) which defines an isolated, normal and complete intersection singularity and f(1),f(2), . . . ,f(m) weighted homogeneous polynomials with the same weight type (w(1),w(2), . . . ,w(n)). Here we give a positive answer to the Wahl Conjecture and its generalization (without the condition of complete intersection singularity) for R when the degree of f(i),1 <= i <= m are bounded below by a constant C depending only on the weights w(1),w(2), . . . ,w(n). Moreover this bound C is improved when any two of w(1),w(2), . . . ,w(n) are coprime. Since there are counter-examples for the Wahl Conjecture and its generalization when f(i) are low degree, our theorem is more or less optimal in the sense that only the lower bound constant can be improved.
Tensor invariants for classical groups revisited

Abstract:We reconsider an old problem, namely the dimension of the $G$-invariant subspace in $V^{\otimes p} \otimes V^{*\otimes q}$, where $G$ is one of the classical groups ${\rm GL}(V)$, ${\rm SL}(V)$, ${\rm O}(V)$, ${\rm SO}(V)$, or ${\rm Sp}(V)$. Spanning sets for the invariant subspace have long been well known, but linear bases are more delicate. Beginning in the broader setting of polynomial invariants, we write down multigraded linear bases which we realize as certain arc diagrams (which may include hyperedges); then the bases for tensor invariants are obtained by restricting our attention to the diagrams that are 1-regular. We survey the many equivalent ways -- some old, some new -- to enumerate these diagrams.

Abstract:Let G be a higher rank semisimple linear algebraic group over a non-Archimedean local field. The simplicial complexes corresponding to any sequence of pairwise non-conjugate irreducible lattices in G are Benjamini–Schramm convergent to the Bruhat–Tits building. Convergence of the relative Plancherel measures and normalized Betti numbers follows. This extends the work (Abert et al. in Ann Math 185(3):711–790, 2017) from real Lie groups to linear groups over arbitrary local fields. Along the way, various results concerning Invariant Random Subgroups and in particular a variant of the classical Borel density theorem are also extended.

Abstract:The first half of this paper is largely expository, wherein we present a systematic combinatorial approach to the theory of polynomial (semi)invariants and multilinear invariants of several vectors and covectors, for the classical groups. This culminates in a graphical description of graded linear bases. By applying well-known results of lattice path combinatorics to Weyl's fundamental theorems of classical invariant theory, we write down Stanley decompositions and Hilbert-Poincare series in terms of families of non-intersecting lattice paths, enumerated with respect to certain corners. In the second half of the paper, we revisit the (semi)invariants in the first half as a special case of a much broader phenomenon. On one hand, polynomial invariants of a group $H$ can be generalized to modules of covariants, i.e., $H$-equivariant polynomial functions between $H$-modules. On the other hand, from the perspective of Roger Howe's theory of dual pairs, these modules of covariants can be viewed as infinite-dimensional simple $(\mathfrak{g}, K)$-modules. This suggests an expanded program in which our goal is to apply combinatorial techniques involving lattice paths in order to write down Hilbert series for arbitrary unitarizable highest-weight $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-modules. As a preview of future work in this program, we present examples showing how modules of covariants -- even those which are not Cohen-Macaulay, and therefore which we would not expect to be combinatorially nice -- can be decomposed in terms of lattice paths. We also extend these methods beyond the classical groups.

Abstract:Nebe, Rains and Sloane studied the polynomial invariants for real and complex Clifford groups and they give a new conceptual proof that these invariants are spanned by the set of complete weight enumerators of certain self-dual codes, which was first proved by Runge using modular forms. The purpose of this paper is to show that very similar results can be obtained for the invariants of the complex Clifford group X-m acting on the space of conjugate polynomials in 2(m) variables of degree N-1 in x(f) and of degree N-2 in their complex conjugates (x(f)) over bar. In particular, we show that the dimension of this space is 2, for (N-1, N-2)=(5,5). This solves affirmatively Conjecture 2 given by Zhu, Kueng, Grassl and Gross. In other words if an orbit of the complex Clifford group is a projective 4-design, then it is automatically a projective 5-design.
