Heavy metals in sediments, mussels and oysters from Trinidad and Venezuela

Abstract:The Gulf of Paria is bordered by both Trinidad and Venezuela, from which various metallic pollutants and other contaminants can originate. The Gulf is still a significant source of fish, crabs and shellfish for human consumption to both countries, where concerns over the quality of this marine environment have been long expressed but never properly addressed. In addition, the circulatory current patterns in the Gulf ensure that contaminants originating from either country are likely to affect both countries eventually. Heavy metals were determined in oysters (Crassostrea rhizophorae and C. virginica), green mussels (Perna viridis) and sediments from the Gulf of Paria. Samples were obtained at four sites in Trinidad and three sites in Venezuela in the Gulf of Paria, in addition to comparative samples collected from three sites on the north coast of Venezuela. Edible tissues of twelve shellfish from each location were blended and aliquots digested with concentrated nitric acid, for extraction of cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc. The solutions were analysed by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. Mercury was extracted with a mixture of nitric, hydrochloric and sulphuric acids and determined by cold vapour atomic absorption. Sediments were oven-dried at 60'C, before being similarly extracted. Results showed that mercury in sediments at all sites in Trinidad and Venezuela exceeded NOAA and Canadian sediment quality guidelines, while cadmium, copper, nickel, lead and zinc also exceeded these guidelines at several sites. Heavy metal levels in oysters and green mussels varied widely with location. However, oysters from the Gulf of Paria contained significantly higher mean levels of cadmium, copper, nickel and zinc than those from the north coast of Venezuela, but this difference was not apparent in mussels. Cadmium, mercury and zinc in sediments were significantly correlated with those of mussels, but not of oysters, in which copper and zinc at several sites in the Gulf of Paria exceeded local maximum permissible levels (Cu = 20 microg g(-1) wet wt; Zn = 50 microg g(-1) wet wt) for human consumption. These findings indicate that while mussels may be better biological indicators of heavy metal pollution in sediments than oysters, the latter may provide copper and zinc contamination. Further research is needed to determine the most appropriate biological indicators of heavy metal and other pollutants in the local marine environment and to develop protocols for their use.
A Comparative Study on Metals and Parasites in Shellfish of Freshwater and Marine Ecosystems

Abstract:Little has been published about the interactions of metals and parasites in economically important aquaculture species, particularly shellfish. Metal bioaccumulation and parasitic diseases could vary in different species depending on temperature changes and other environmental factors. Most studies conducted on endoparasites, such as acanthocephalans, cestodes, nematodes, and trematodes, indicate that only cestodes and acanthocephalans could absorb heavy metals successfully in their hosts, and that only adult worms could be used as indicators of environmental pollution. In Artemia parthenogenetica, cestodes increased resistance to arsenic (As) pollution and temperature changes; and infection was associated with improved antioxidant defense system without oxidative damage. The most serious parasite of Penaeus spp. is Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (Microsporidia: Enterocytozoonidae). Apostome ciliates are negatively impacting Pandalus borealis of the northeastern United States (Synophrya sp. that causes white eggs or Black Spot Gill Syndrome) and Penaeus spp. from the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico (Hyalophysa lynni that causes shrimp black gill). In freshwater fish, the larvae of the nematode Eustrongylides spp. Jgerskild, 1909 (Nematoda: Dioctophymidae) absorbed lead (Pb), mercury, and cadmium, when the metal levels were close to zero in water and sediment. The concentration of Pb in the larvae was approximately 17 times higher than in the fish. Like the antioxidant defense reactions in the parasitized A. parthenogenetica exposed to As, an improved antioxidant defense system may be available in parasitized fish, limiting oxidative damage caused by metals. This study presents baseline concentrations of 30 metals in wild Penaeus vannamei Boone, 1931 from Ecuador and other species, as well as the current taxonomy for selected shellfish species and their parasites. Research is needed to assess the relationship of metals in parasites and host tissues, and oxidative stress in shellfish. The tools of One Health including molecular ecology, population genomics, proteomics, and epigenetic epidemiology should be used to detect parasites and environmental pollution indicators that could threaten aquatic species from freshwater and marine ecosystems, particularly considering climate change and pollution threats.

Abstract:The Adyar estuary, situated at the heart of Chennai city, India, has been subjected to significant anthropogenic pollution over the past decade due to rapid urbanization and industrialization.This study endeavored to explore the bioaccumulation patterns of heavy metals within bivalve species including Perna viridis, Mercenaria mercenaria , and Lamellidens marginalis . Additionally, it aimed to assess the concentrations of heavy metals present in water samples obtained from ten discrete stations within the Adyar estuary across different seasonal periods. To better understand the dynamics of contamination, metal pollutants including Cd, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn were analyzed in the soft tissues (Gill, Kidney, and Muscle) of the bivalves using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) (ELICO's SL- 176). The study also investigated the seasonal changes in biochemical constituents affecting the nutritional quality of these edible bivalves following conventional methods, and estimated the risk (both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic) to consumers. Results showed that the biochemical constituents of Perna viridis and Mercenaria mercenaria were comparatively lower than those of the freshwater bivalve Lamellidens Marginalis (p > 0.05). Heavy metal accumulation in the mussels followed the order Mn > Zn > Cu > Pb > Fe > Cd > B. The highest uptake of metals by the bivalves occurred during the post-monsoon season, while the least uptake was observed during the monsoon season. The overall metal burden for the studied species followed the descending order M. mercenaria > P. viridis > L. marginalis . The study indicated that both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to humans from consuming these mussels were higher due to the excessive accumulation of metals Zn and Mn in all three studied bivalves.

Abstract:The Gippsland Lakes estuary, a Ramsar listed wetland, in Victoria, Australia, is an area of potential concern for metal pollution due to influxes of human population and associated anthropogenic activities. A biomonitoring exercise was undertaken where the concentrations of 9 metals (Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Ag, Cd and Hg) were analysed in the soft tissue of two common sessile invertebrates: the mussel Mytilus edulis and the barnacle Amphibalanus variegatus from 6 locations on two different occasions throughout the Gippsland Lakes estuary. A salinity gradient exists in the Lakes, from seawater at Lakes Entrance in the east, decreasing down to < 10 PSU in the west at Lake Wellington during times of rainfall, which is a major factor governing the growth and distribution of both species. Dissolved metal levels in general were low; however, Cu at most sites exceeded the 90% trigger values, while all Zn concentrations exceeded the lowest 80% trigger values of the ANZECC marine water quality guidelines for environmental health. Elevated levels of Cu and Zn were found particularly in barnacles at some sites with environmental contamination due to leaching from anti fouling paints and sacrificial zinc anodes. Elevated levels of Ag and Cd were found in mussels at the Hollands Landing site, which is immediately adjacent to a boat ramp, and Cd and Ag at this site are suspected to originate from inland anthropogenic sources. Concentrations of As in M. edulis across all 6 sites in both sampling periods had mean wet weight As concentrations exceeding the maximum level stated in the FSANZ guidelines. A. variegatus contained elevated levels of Hg especially at the North Arm site with a maximum of 13.6 μg Hg/g dry wt., while A. variegatus also showed temporal changes in Hg concentrations across sites. The maximum Hg concentration found in Mytilus edulis was 1.49 μg Hg/g dry wt. at the Hollands Landing site. Previous contaminant studies of biota in the Lakes have targeted sampling of singular predatory or migratory species, such as Black Bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) and the Burrunan dolphin (Tursiops australis). This is the first biomonitoring study conducted on sessile organisms to assess metal contamination in the system.

Abstract:This study focused on 120 specimens of the shrimp Palaemon elegans collected in intertidal zones in eight selected areas. This study aimed to assess the suitability of P. elegans as a bioindicator of natural and anthropogenic marine pollution. Metal concentrations of aluminum (Al), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) were measured in shrimp collected from various sites in the Canary Islands, including areas affected by volcanic activity, industrial activity, and control zones. The determination of metal concentrations was conducted using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometry (ICP-OES). The results showed significant differences in metal concentrations across the studied sites, with the highest levels of Al, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn observed in areas impacted by the Tajogaite volcanic eruption and harbor activity. Sites near old landfills and sewage pipes also exhibited elevated levels of Cd, Cu, and Pb, indicating strong anthropogenic influence. Al was found in the highest concentration in Harbour, reaching 25.7 ± 6.2 mg/kg, while the lowest concentration was observed in Control Lp at 11.5 ± 0.69 mg/kg. Conversely, lower metal concentrations were detected in control zones and areas with high dinoflagellate presence, suggesting a potential role of bioremediation by marine phytoplankton. The ability of P. elegans to accumulate metals in its tissues, particularly in areas of high pollution, highlights its potential as a bioindicator species. This study underscores the importance of P. elegans in monitoring marine pollution and provides insights into the environmental impact of both natural and human-induced contamination on coastal ecosystems.

Abstract:This study reports, for the first time, the baseline levels for fifteen trace metals in M. galloprovincialis tissue from around the Mediterranean, Marmara and Black Seas. The environmental quality in the surrounding seawater was assessed i.e., a mussel farm was investigated by using CF and DC indices, and the water quality was qualified as good for the aquacultural activities. A strong Cu-regulation in the transplanted mussels was observed and it ranged between 3.20 and 3.60 μg/g d.w. The highest bioavailability and bioconcentration of the particulate Fe fraction could present a health risk to consumers with a low risk level (1 < THQ < 9.9). Cr is considered the limiting metal for mussel consumption (< 2 kg/day). The metal contamination gradient was assessed using TEPI and TESVI indices that identified seven reference stations on the large scale and revealed that Cd is the most investigated metal in the literature databases, and found that Pb was the most bioavailable contaminant in the areas examined.

Abstract:ABSTRACT CMX001 is a novel, broad-spectrum lipid antiviral conjugate (LAC) that produces high intracellular levels of the active antiviral agent cidofovir diphosphate (CDV-PP). Study CMX001-102 was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group, dose-escalating study in healthy volunteers. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the safety and pharmacokinetic parameters of CMX001 after single and multiple doses. Single doses ranging from 0.25 to 2.0 mg/kg of body weight and multiple doses ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 mg/kg (3 total doses, administered every 6 days) were given orally. Safety was assessed using comprehensive clinical and laboratory evaluations, including enhanced monitoring for potential gastrointestinal (GI) effects using wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE). Serial plasma and pooled urine samples were collected to estimate pharmacokinetic parameters for both CMX001 and cidofovir (CDV). No adverse events occurred that prevented dose escalation. No clinically significant drug-related changes in blood chemistry, hematology, renal function, or intraocular pressure were observed. No CMX001-related gastrointestinal mucosal changes were observed by WCE. CMX001 was absorbed rapidly, with maximum plasma concentrations observed 2 to 3 h postdose. Maximum plasma drug concentration and systemic exposure of CMX001 increased approximately in proportion to dose following single and multiple doses; no significant accumulation of CMX001 or CDV was observed following multiple doses. We conclude that CMX001 is orally bioavailable and well tolerated in healthy volunteers at doses up to 2 mg/kg, approximately 140 mg in a typical adult. This is the first demonstration of the use of phospholipid conjugation technology to achieve plasma drug exposures that are expected to result in activity against multiple double-stranded DNA viruses.

Abstract:Persistent organic pollutants are lipophilic contaminants which can accumulate in marine food chains, causing health issues for human consumers. Farmed C. meridionalis and M. galloprovincialis were collected and analysed for POPs, extracted using QuEChERS method and analysed via GC-MS/MS. Detected OCPs (trans-permethrin > cis-permethrin > dieldrin > chlordane > chloro-benzilate > endosulfan > nonachlor > DDD) were highest contributors to POP contamination (average: 0.7 – 48 ng/g dry weight), followed by PAHs (flourene > pyrene > fluoranthene > benzo(a)pyrene > benz(a)anthracene; average: 1 – 13.4 ng/g d.w.), and PCBs (180 > 149 > 28 > 110 > 153 > 52 > 18 > 44 > 118 > 138; average: 0.3 – 3.2 ng/g d.w). Temporal differences were detected in both species for cis- and trans-permethrin, and PCBs 18, 118 and 149, with seasonal changes linked gametogenic cycle (fat) of mussels. All POP contaminants were below maximum limits of international regulations.

Abstract:A 75-year-old nulliparous woman, presented with a 6-day history of abdominal pain and vomiting. When she was examined, she was ill looking with a tender distended abdomen with hypertonic bowel sounds. She had a large uterine fibroid, diagnosed many years previously, noted on examination as 28-week size. The patient’s blood test results revealed a haemoglobin of 15.6 g/dl, white cell count of 8.86 10/l and platelets of 328610/l. Her urea and electrolytes revealed an elevated urea 11.6 mmol/l, a normal creatinine 73 mmol/l, low sodium 133 mmol/l, low chloride 94 mmol/l and normal potassium of 4.1 mmol/l in keeping with excessive vomiting. Abdominal radiography revealed dilated loops of small bowel and a calcified left-sided abdominal mass (Figure 1). A laparotomy was performed for the bowel obstruction. The patient did not receive any form of thromboprophylaxis such as low-molecular weight heparin, compression stockings or intermittent pneumatic compression. A large uterine fibroid was noted with adhesions to omentum and small bowel. Adhesiolysis with decompression of the small bowel was done. Because she was very ill, it was decided not to do hysterectomy at that time. Postoperatively, she developed a deep vein thrombosis, confirmed on venous colour and pulsed Doppler ultrasonography, affecting the left common and superficial femoral veins, as well as the left external iliac vein. She was started on unfractionated heparin then warfarin and remained on this with INR studies in the therapeutic range. After 7 months, an elective total abdominal hysterectomy was done under the cover of low-molecular weight heparin with warfarin discontinued and normal INR. Postoperatively, warfarin was started after 6 h and she has had no further problems 2 years later.

Abstract:Limited research has been conducted on the heavy metal (loid) (HM) exchanges among seawater, sediments and cultured mussels in mariculture areas. To determine the impacts of mussel mariculture on the transfer and risks of HMs in coastal environments, samples of seawater, sediments and cultured mussels from a typical mariculture area in the South China Sea were analysed. The logarithmic partition coefficients of sediment/water indicated that HMs were preferentially retained by sediments. There were relatively low ecological risks in mussel raft mariculture areas. Principal component analysis and correlation analysis revealed the influences of terrestrial input and ocean circulation on the HMs in seawater, and the bioaccumulation factors reflected the possible accumulation of HMs in seawater by cultured mussels. Mussel farming was the indirect source of HMs in sediments, and the biochemical processes of cultured mussels promoted the transfer and accumulation of HMs into sediments. Health risk assessment revealed that children were more susceptible than adults, and Cd, As and Cr were among the threatening elements. Nonetheless, the health risks that were possibly caused by the daily consumption of farmed mussels were still within safe limits. Thus, the potential pollution remediation and biomonitoring functions of mussel aquaculture in coastal water environments will be further studied in the future.
Heavy metal accumulation and interaction dynamics in Brachidontes pharaonis: a bioindicator study in the Red Sea

Abstract:This work evaluates utilizing the native mussel Brachidontes pharaonis as a bioindicator and sentinel organism for monitoring heavy metals Cu, Zn, and Cd along the Red Sea coast of Egypt. Samples were collected from four coastal locations, and the concentrations of heavy metals in the mussels' tissues, shells, seawater, and sediments were analyzed. Subsequently, bioassay experiments were conducted by exposing the organisms to single, binary, and tertiary metal mixtures, and the accumulation of heavy metals was determined to elucidate the dynamics of metal–metal interactions. Field samples revealed significant variations in heavy metal concentrations in the mussels' soft tissues across different locations, with Zn ranging from 58.1 to 121.0 μg/g dw (dry weight), Cu ranging between 18.3 and 36.7 μg/g dw, and Cd ranging from 0.3 to 1.04 μg/g dw. Conversely, the shells exhibited minimal spatial variations, with much lower contents of Cu (ranging from 1.9 to 2.8 μg/g dw) and Zn (ranging from 1.8 to 1.9 μg/g dw). However, the shells accumulated Cd at higher levels (ranging from 1.4 to 2.1 μg/g dw) compared to the soft tissues. Following a 96-h bioassay experiment, the soft tissues displayed a linear accumulation of metals with increasing exposure dose, with Cd showing the highest accumulation rate (approximately threefold) followed by Zn (twofold) and Cu (1.7-fold). In binary and tertiary exposures, the metals exhibited a general antagonistic interaction, affecting each other's accumulation. On the other hand, the accumulation of heavy metals in the shells after the 96-h bioassay exposure did not follow a consistent linear pattern, suggesting that accumulation during this short experimental period occurs primarily through adsorption rather than the biological pathway.

Abstract:The concentrations of 14 metals, namely, chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), arsenic (As), strontium (Sr), cadmium (Cd), tin (Sn), antimony (Sb), mercury, (Hg), and lead (Pb), have been studied in freshwater mollusk Lamellidens marginalis collected from Dhimbe reservoir. In addition, also studied the cellular and antioxidative status to assess metal contamination as pollution biomarkers. The levels of all the 14 metals were elevated in different sampling sites of Dhimbe reservoir. The level of metals in the L. marginalis was followed as Mn > Zn > Ni > Sr > Cr > Cu > Hg > Se > Sn > Pb > As > Co > Cd > Sb. The oxidative biomarkers viz. catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST); glycolytic enzymes viz. lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH); and protein metabolic enzymes viz. aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were significantly (p < 0.01) higher, while neurotransmitter enzymes such as acetylcholine esterase (AChE) were significantly inhibited in muscle of L. marginalis (p < 0.01) collected from different sampling sites. Therefore, based on our results, we could recommend that the Dhimbe reservoir is moderately metal contaminated and investigation based on biochemical parameters such as antioxidative enzymes, cellular biomarkers, and AChE are strong indicators for metal contamination; hence, these parameters are successfully applied as reliable biomarkers for monitoring contaminated freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:Flesh of 141 fish specimens collected along the southern coast of New Caledonia, close to the mining industry Prony Resources New Caledonia, were analyzed for 10 elements (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni and Zn). The leopard coral grouper Plectopomus leopardus revealed significant spatial variations for Cr, Fe, Mn and Zn and size-dependent accumulation of Hg. Sanitary risk assessment suggests that Hg and Me-Hg could potentially be a concern for heavy fish consumers. A previous study in New Caledonia had demonstrated the capacity of P. leopardus to differentially accumulate Ag, Cd, Cu, Hg and Zn and as such its potential as bioindicator specie to monitor contamination status in urban areas (Metian et al., 2013). Our results demonstrate that this specie can also to be used as a bioindicator to monitor the contamination status of Cr, Fe and Mn in New Caledonian lagoon in relation to mining activities.
Trace metal bioaccumulation in Mytilus galloprovincialis from Essaouira protected coastal area (Atlantic coast of Morocco): Implications for marine ecosystem and human health

Abstract:This study assessed trace metal pollution in the Essaouira protected coastal area (Atlantic coast of Morocco) using the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis as a bio-indicator and evaluated potential human health risks from mussel consumption. Samples were collected seasonally at 8:00 am from April 2017 to February 2018, and metal concentrations in mussel tissues were analyzed using ICP-AES. The metals were found in descending order: Fe > Zn > Al > Cu > Pb > Cr > Cd > Ag, with significant spatial and seasonal variations. Cluster analysis indicated different sources for the metals, with Fe, Zn, and Al linked to continental inputs and Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, and Ag to anthropogenic sources. The pollution gradient, assessed using the Individual Multimetal Bioaccumulation Index (IMBI), showed that the area is less polluted than other Moroccan coasts. The Human health risk assessment revealed no significant risks, confirming the safety of mussel consumption from this region.

Abstract:Due to the increasing consumption of platinum (Pt), especially in automobile exhaust catalysts, environmental concentrations of Pt are of emerging concern worldwide. Limited information exists on environmental concentrations, particularly in Pt mining regions, while South Africa is the world's main supplier of Pt. Moreover, other metals are also released as by-products of Pt mining, which might also cause environmental concern. Certain fish parasite taxa have the ability to accumulate metals orders of magnitude higher than their hosts and can be used to reliably detect metals with naturally low abundance. Studies on Pt accumulation in parasite-host systems are limited. Therefore, the aims of the present study were (1) to determine the accumulation of a variety of metals (cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), platinum (Pt), and zinc (Zn)) in helminth fish parasites compared with their hosts from a reference site and an impoundment impacted by Pt mining activities; (2) to assess whether there is a difference between bioaccumulation of metals in infected and uninfected hosts, as well as between hosts with different infection intensities; and (3) to compare the biomarker responses (acetylcholine esterase activity (AChE), metallothionein content (MT), catalase activity (CAT), reduced glutathione content (GSH), malondialdehyde content (MDA), protein carbonyls induction (PC), superoxide dismutase activity (SOD), and cellular energy allocation (CEA)) between infected and uninfected hosts. The cestode Atractolytocestus huronensis accumulated significantly higher concentrations of Cr, Ni, and Pt than their host Cyprinus carpio, while the nematode Contracaecum sp. accumulated significantly higher concentrations of Pt and Zn than their host Clarias gariepinus. Infected fish showed lower metal concentrations compared to uninfected fish, while the parasites had no significant effects on their hosts' biomarker responses. The parasites demonstrated the bioavailability of metals derived from Pt mining activities and their ability to resist its toxic effects. Thus, these parasites are promising sensitive accumulation indicators for Cr, Ni, Pb, and Pt contaminations from Pt mining activities.

Abstract:The rapid expansion of agriculture in the Souss Massa region has been accompanied by a significant increase in pesticide usage to protect and increase crop yields. Unfortunately, these pesticides leave behind residues that can have detrimental effects on both human health and the environment. To investigate the impact of pesticide contamination on the coasts of Agadir Bay, our study focuses on the bivalve Perna perna (Linnaeus, 1758) as a biomonitoring sentinel species. Between autumn 2009 and summer 2010, we conducted measurements of pesticide residue concentrations and assessed two biomarkers of pollution the Glutathion-S-transferase (GST) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the soft tissues of P. perna. These bivalves were seasonally collected from two different locations along the Agadir Bay coast. The results revealed that Glutathion-S-transferase and acetylcholinesterase showed seasonal variations, likely influenced by the species' reproductive cycle. In terms of pesticide concentrations, the levels of organochlorines were found to range from 13.40 to 109.76 ng g−1 of dry weight (dw) for Dichlofluanide, not-detected (ND) to 38.66 ng g−1 dw for Endosulfan S, ND to 15.76 ng g−1 dw for Lindane, ND to 33.66 ng g−1 dw for Fenarimol, and 0.26–35.02 ng g−1 dw for Buperimate. It should be noted that these levels of pesticide contamination are relatively low compared to values reported in similar studies conducted in other regions of the world. The contamination of Agadir Bay by pesticides can be attributed to their extensive use in agricultural practices in the Souss Massa region.

Abstract:Salt marshes are highly productive and valuable coastal ecosystems that act as filters for nutrients and pollutants at the land-sea interface. The salt marshes of the mid-Atlantic United States often exhibit geochemical behavior that varies significantly from other estuaries around the world, but our understanding of metal mobility and bioavailability remains incomplete for these systems. We sampled abiotic (water and sediment) and native biotic (three halophyte and two bivalve species) compartments of a southeastern United States salt marsh to understand the site- and species-specific metal concentrations, fractionation, and bioavailability for 16 metals and metalloids, including two naturally occurring radionuclides. Location on the marsh platform greatly influenced metal concentrations in sediment and metal bioaccumulation in halophytes, with sites above the mean high-water mark (i.e., high marsh zone) having lower concentrations in sediment but plants exhibiting greater biota sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs). Transition metal concentrations in the sediment were an average of 6× higher in the low marsh zone compared to the high marsh zone and heavy metals were on average 2× higher. Tissue- and species-specific preferential accumulation in bivalves provide opportunities for tailored biomonitoring programs. For example, mussel byssal threads accumulated ten of the sixteen studied elements to significantly greater concentrations compared to soft tissues and oysters had remarkably high soft tissue zinc concentrations (~5000 mg/kg) compared to all other species and element combinations studied. Additionally, some of our results have important implications for understanding metal mobility and implementing effective remediation (specifically phytoremediation) strategies, including observations that (1) heavy metals exhibit distinct concentration spatial distributions and metal fractionation patterns which vary from the transition metals and (2) sediment organic matter fraction appears to play an important role in controlling sediment metal concentrations, fractionation, and plant bioavailability.

Abstract:Biomonitoring of heavy metal pollution through the use of biomarkers could be a difficult task since the organisms' physiological changes could shift regarding natural factors (i.e., the season of the year) and due to the anthropogenic pressures of the environment. In the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, where most industrial and developing countries are settled, it is essential to address these concerns to generate information for the stakeholders and monitoring programs that aim to use biochemical biomarkers as early warning signals to detect heavy metal pollution. The present study intended to determinate the heavy metal concentrations in sediments and the hepatopancreas of the crab species Neohelice granulata as well as the ecological risk through the use of biomarkers and geochemical indices in sites with different anthropogenic pressures of the Bahía Blanca estuary (SW Atlantic Ocean) during the warm and cold season. The results showed low to moderate heavy metal pollution in the sediments by Cu with possible effects on the biota in a site with sewage waters' discharges. Except for GST that was explained by Cd, the biomarkers employed were not useful to assess spatial heavy metal pollution, and they might be ruled out by physiological seasonal variations rather than anthropogenic constraints, or another type of pollutants in the area.
