Abstract:This paper presents a novel generic asymptotic expansion formula of expectations of multidimensional Wiener functionals through a Malliavin calculus technique. The uniform estimate of the asymptotic expansion is shown under a weaker condition on the Malliavin covariance matrix of the target Wiener functional. In particular, the method provides a tractable expansion for the expectation of an irregular functional of the solution to a multidimensional rough differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst index $H<1/2$, without using complicated fractional integral calculus for the singular kernel. In a numerical experiment, our expansion shows a much better approximation for a probability distribution function than its normal approximation, which demonstrates the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:Asymptotic formulas with error bounds are obtained for the first elliptic integral near its logarithmic singularity. It is convenient to start from the more general problem of expanding the integral over the positive t-axis of $[(t + x)(t + y)(t + z)(t + w)]^{{{ - 1} / 2}} $. The method of Mellin transforms gives an asymptotic expansion that converges uniformly if ${{0 < \max \{ x,y\} } / {\min \{ z,w\} \leqq r < 1}}$. Each term of the series contains a Legendre polynomial and the derivative of a Legendre function with respect to its degree; this derivative involves nothing worse than a logarithm. A simple bound for the relative error of the Nth partial sum is obtained from Wongs formula for the remainder, aided by Chebyshevs integral inequality. Error bounds are given also for more accurate asymptotic formulas containing a complete elliptic integral. Formulas for the standard elliptic integral of the first kind are obtained in the case $w = \infty $. The method of Mellin transforms and Wongs formula are discussed in an appendix.

Abstract:Partial differential equations with highly oscillatory input terms are hardly ever solvable analytically and their numerical treatment is difficult. Modulated Fourier expansion used as an {\it ansatz} is a well known and extensively investigated tool in asymptotic numerical approach for this kind of problems. Although the efficiency of this approach has been recognised, its error analysis has not been investigated rigorously for general forms of linear PDEs. In this paper, we start such kind of investigations for a general form of linear PDEs with an input term characterised by a single high frequency. More precisely we derive an analytical form of such an expansion and provide a formula for the error of its truncation. Theoretical investigations are illustrated by computational simulations.

Abstract:The paper provides a precise error estimate for an asymptotic expansion of a certain stochastic control problem related to relative entropy minimization. In particular, it is shown that the expansion error depends on the regularity of functionals on path space. An efficient numerical scheme based on a weak approximation with Monte Carlo simulation is employed to implement the asymptotic expansion in multidimensional settings. Throughout numerical experiments, it is confirmed that the approximation error of the proposed scheme is consistent with the theoretical rate of convergence.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide sufficient conditions for the functions $\psi$ and $\phi$ to be the approximate duals in the Hardy space $H^p(\mathbb{R})$ for all $0<p\leq1$. Based on these conditions, we obtain the wavelet series expansion in the Hardy space with the approximate duals. The important properties of our approach include the following: (i) our results work for any $0<p\leq1$; (ii) we do not assume that the functions $\psi$ and $\phi$ are exact duals; (iii) we provide a tractable bound for the operator norm of the associated wavelet frame operator so that it is possible to check the suitability of the functions $\psi$ and $\phi$.

Abstract:AbstractMatrix-valued wavelet series expansions for wide-sense stationary processes are studied in this paper. The expansion coefficients a are uncorrelated matrix random process, which is a property similar to that of a matrix Karhunen-Loe&grave;ve (MKL) expansion. Unlike the MKL expansion, however, the matrix wavelet expansion does not require the solution of the eigen equation. This expansion also has advantages over the Fourier series, which is often used as an approximation to the MKL expansion in that it completely eliminates correlation. The basis functions of this expansion can be obtained easily from wavelets of the Matrix-valued Lemarie´-Meyer type and the power-spectral density of the process.

Abstract:We derive a nonparametric higher-order asymptotic expansion for small-time changes of conditional characteristic functions of Itô semimartingale increments. The asymptotics setup is of joint type: both the length of the time interval of the increment of the underlying process and the time gap between evaluating the conditional characteristic function are shrinking. The spot semimartingale characteristics of the underlying process as well as their spot semimartingale characteristics appear as leading terms in the derived asymptotic expansions. The analysis applies to a general class of Itô semimartingales that includes in particular Lévy-driven SDEs and time-changed Lévy processes. The asymptotic expansion results are of direct use for constructing nonparametric estimates pertaining to the stochastic volatility dynamics of an asset from high-frequency data of options written on the underlying asset.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the numerical solution of general nonlinear mixed Volterra-Fredholm integral equations by the trapezoidal Nyström method. It focuses on the derivation and analysis of asymptotic error expansion of the Nyström solution, providing the basis for Richardson's extrapolation. This will greatly increase the accuracy of the numerical solution. Some numerical results are given to illustrate this theory.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the solution to some time harmonic wave problems when the wave number is taken as a small asymptotic parameter. Our basic strategy is to introduce suitable Lagrangian multipliers into the governing equations, and transforming them into saddle point problems. These saddle point problems are uniformly invertible with respect to the wave number k∈[0,k0], with k0 being an arbitrary but fixed positive number. The asymptotic expansion is then derived by the standard regular perturbation technique.

Abstract:In this paper, the numerical solution of two-dimensional linear Volterra integral equation by collocation and iterated collocation is considered. The asymptotic error expansion of the iterated collocation is obtained. We show that when piecewise polynomials of πp-1,q-1 are used, the iterated collocation solution admits an error expansion in powers of the step-size h and step-size k. For a special choice of the collocation point, the leading terms in the error expansion for iterated collocation contain only even powers of the stepsizes h and k, beginning with terms in h2p and k2q so that the Richardson extrapolation can be done. This will increase the accuracy of numerical solution greatly.
Gaussian Approximation for the Moving Averaged Modulus Wavelet Transform and its Variants

Abstract:The moving average of the complex modulus of the analytic wavelet transform provides a robust time-scale representation for signals to small time shifts and deformation. In this work, we derive the Wiener chaos expansion of this representation for stationary Gaussian processes by the Malliavin calculus and combinatorial techniques. The expansion allows us to obtain a lower bound for the Wasserstein distance between the time-scale representations of two long-range dependent Gaussian processes in terms of Hurst indices. Moreover, we apply the expansion to establish an upper bound for the smooth Wasserstein distance and the Kolmogorov distance between the distributions of a random vector derived from the time-scale representation and its normal counterpart. It is worth mentioning that the expansion consists of infinite Wiener chaos and the projection coefficients converge to zero slowly as the order of the Wiener chaos increases, and we provide a rational-decay upper bound for these distribution distances, the rate of which depends on the nonlinear transformation of the amplitude of the complex wavelet coefficients.

Abstract:Constructing Haar wavelet synopses under a given approximation error has many real world applications. In this paper, we take a novel approach towards constructing unrestricted Haar wavelet synopses under an error bound on uniform norm ( L ∞ ). We provide two approximation algorithms which both have linear time complexity and a (log N )-approximation ratio. The space complexities of these two algorithms are O (log N ) and O ( N ) respectively. These two algorithms have the advantage of being both simple in structure and naturally adaptable for stream data processing. Unlike traditional approaches for synopses construction that rely heavily on examining wavelet coefficients and their summations, the proposed construction methods solely depend on examining the original data and are extendable to other findings. Extensive experiments indicate that these techniques are highly practical and surpass related ones in both efficiency and effectiveness.

Abstract:Wavelet-type random series representations of the well-known Fractional Brownian Motion (FBM) and many other related stochastic processes and fields have started to be introduced since more than two decades. Such representations provide natural frameworks for approximating almost surely and uniformly rough sample paths at different scales and for study of various aspects of their complex erratic behavior. Hermite process of an arbitrary integer order $d$, which extends FBM, is a paradigmatic example of a stochastic process belonging to the $d$th Wiener chaos. It was introduced very long time ago, yet many of its properties are still unknown when $d\ge 3$. In a paper published in 2004, Pipiras raised the problem to know whether wavelet-type random series representations with a well-localized smooth scaling function, reminiscent to those for FBM due to Meyer, Sellan and Taqqu, can be obtained for a Hermite process of any order $d$. He solved it in this same paper in the particular case $d=2$ in which the Hermite process is called the Rosenblatt process. Yet, the problem remains unsolved in the general case $d\ge 3$. The main goal of our article is to solve it, not only for usual Hermite processes but also for generalizations of them. Another important goal of our article is to derive almost sure uniform estimates of the errors related with approximations of such processes by scaling functions parts of their wavelet-type random series representations.

Abstract:Integral equations of mixed Volterra—Fredholm type arise in various physical and biological problems. In the present paper, we study the particular trapezoidal Nyström method and we obtain the asymptotic error expansion for the trapezoidal Nyström solution of the linear Volterra—Fredholm equation. So the Richardson extrapolation can be applied. This will increase the accuracy of the numerical solution greatly. Some numerical examples are given to illustrate this theory.

Abstract:The wavelet summation method is a method to obtain a non-linear approximation with 'nice properties' for a given signal. This technique has been shown to be effective in non-parametric regression and other fields, including signal denoising. By utilizing a shrinkage rule on the empirical wavelet packet coefficients, wavelet packet summation methods can be obtained. In this paper, we show that the wavelet packet expansion of any finite energy function converges pointwise almost everywhere under the wavelet packet projection, hard sampling, and soft sampling methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the Hermite polynomials H-n((2n + 1)(1/2)z) as n --> infinity. A globally uniform asymptotic expansion is obtained for z in an unbounded region containing the right half-plane Re z >= 0. A corresponding expansion can also be given for z in the left half-plane by using the symmetry property of the Hermite polynomials. Our approach is based on the steepest-descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems introduced by Deift and Zhou.
