Abstract:We prove Edgeworth type expansions for distribution functions of sums of free random variables under minimal moment conditions. The proofs are based on the analytic definition of free convolution. We apply these results to the expansion of densities to derive expansions for the free entropic distance of sums to the Wigner law.

Abstract:Let {Zn,n≥1} be a sequence of independent nonnegative r.v.’s (random variables) with finite second moments. It is shown that under a Lindeberg-type condition, the αth inverse moment E{a+Xn}−α can be asymptotically approximated by the inverse of the αth moment {a+EXn}−α where a>0,α>0, and {Xn} are the naturally-scaled partial sums. Furthermore, it is shown that, when {Zn} only possess finite rth moments, 1≤r<2, the preceding asymptotic approximation can still be valid by using different norming constants which are the standard deviations of partial sums of suitably truncated {Zn}.

Abstract:The evolution equations of moments for the Brownian coagulation of nanoparticles in both continuum and free molecule regimes are analytically studied.These equations are derived using a Taylor-expansion technique.The self-preserving size distribution is investigated using a newly defined dimensionless parameter,and the asymptotic values for this parameter are theoretically determined.The dimensionless time required for an initial size distribution to achieve self-preservation is also derived in both regimes.Once the size distribution becomes self-preserving,the time evolution of the zeroth and second moments can be theoretically obtained,and it is found that the second moment varies linearly with time in the continuum regime.Equivalent equations,rather than the original ones from which they are derived,can be employed to improve the accuracy of the results and reduce the computational cost for Brownian coagulation in the continuum regime as well as the free molecule regime.

Abstract:In this paper, we characterize the asymptotic and large scale behavior of the eigenvalues of wavelet random matrices in high dimensions. We assume that possibly non-Gaussian, finite-variance $p$-variate measurements are made of a low-dimensional $r$-variate ($r \ll p$) fractional stochastic process with non-canonical scaling coordinates and in the presence of additive high-dimensional noise. The measurements are correlated both time-wise and between rows. We show that the $r$ largest eigenvalues of the wavelet random matrices, when appropriately rescaled, converge in probability to scale-invariant functions in the high-dimensional limit. By contrast, the remaining $p-r$ eigenvalues remain bounded in probability. Under additional assumptions, we show that the $r$ largest log-eigenvalues of wavelet random matrices exhibit asymptotically Gaussian distributions. The results have direct consequences for statistical inference.

Abstract:We study the asymptotic behavior of the solution to some time harmonic wave problems when the wave number is taken as a small asymptotic parameter. Our basic strategy is to introduce suitable Lagrangian multipliers into the governing equations, and transforming them into saddle point problems. These saddle point problems are uniformly invertible with respect to the wave number k∈[0,k0], with k0 being an arbitrary but fixed positive number. The asymptotic expansion is then derived by the standard regular perturbation technique.

Abstract:We provide several simple recursive formulae for the moment sequence of infinite Bernoulli convolution. We relate moments of one infinite Bernoulli convolution with others having different but related parameters. We give examples relating Euler numbers to the moments of infinite Bernoulli convolutions. One of the examples provides moment interpretation of Pell numbers as well as new identities satisfied by Pell and Lucas numbers.

Abstract:Two-direction multiscaling functions $\boldphi$ and two-direction multiwavelets $\boldpsi$ associated with $\boldphi$ are a more general and more flexible setting than one-direction multiscaling functions and multiwavelets. In this paper, we derive two methods for computing continuous moments of orthogonal two-direction multiscaling functions $\boldphi$ and orthogonal two-direction multiwavelets $\boldpsi$ associated with $\boldphi$. The first method is by doubling and the second method is by separation. Two examples for both methods are given.

Abstract:Wavelets with trigonometric vanishing moments are studied for the first time. A practical construction algorithm of multivariate orthonormal wavelets with trigonometric vanishing moments is proposed. Based on such construction algorithm, a tight frame of L-2 (R-d) can be obtained even at the worst case. An example of construction of bivariate orthonormal wavelets providing concrete trigonometric vanishing moments is presented.

Abstract:We consider the eigenproblem for the Laplacian inside a three-dimensional revolutional domain diffeomorphic to a solid torus and construct asymptotic eigenvalues and eigenfunctions (quasimodes) of the whispering gallery-type. The whispering gallery-type asymptotics are localized near the boundary of the domain, and an explicit analytic representations in terms of Airy functions is constructed for such asymptotics. There are several different scales in the problem, which makes it possible to apply the procedure of adiabatic approximation in the form of operator separation of variables to reduce the initial problem to one-dimensional problems up to the small correction. We also discuss the relation between the constructed whispering gallery-type asymptotics and classical billiards in the corresponding domain, in particularly, such asymptotics correspond to almost integrable billiards with proper degeneracy. We illustrate the results in the case when a revolutional domain is obtained by rotation of the triangle with rounded wedges.

Abstract:Wavelet packets possess excellent characteristics in differentiations of space and spectrum. In this paper, The splitting trick coined by Daubechies is used to construct wavelet packets with an arbitrary dilation matrix A. Different from the classical wavelet packets, instructed by Coifman et al., our method is that we split the wavelet subspaces directly instead of using the low-pass and the high-pass filters associated with the multiresolution analysis. Furthermore, the method overcomes the difficulty of constructing non-orthogonal wavelet packets of the dilation matrix not equal to 2I. Finally, we show how to construct various Riesz basis from the wavelet packets.

We establish asymptotic expansions of [Formula: see text] to arbitrary orders near [Formula: see text], which complements the recent results of Han–Li–Li on the Yamabe equation, Guo–Li–Wanon the weighted Yamabe equation, and partly extends that of Guo–Wan–Yang on the Liouville equation in a punctured disc. Our method is a combination of a priori estimate and mathematical induction.
