Abstract:Topological insulators go nonlinear Whereas solid-state insulators tend to be fixed by material properties, photonic topological insulators can be designed at will to mimic a variety of scenarios and complex interactions. Mukherjee and Rechtsman go beyond the linear optical regime that has been studied to date and show that photonic topological insulators can also exhibit nonlinear optical features (see the Perspective by Ablowitz and Cole). Their array of laser-written waveguides can support solitons, which are also found to exhibit topological features, performing cyclotron-like orbits associated with the topology of the lattice. Abstract:Topological insulators are unique physical structures that are insulators in their bulk, but support currents at their edges which can be unidirectional and topologically protected from scattering on disorder and inhomogeneities. Photonic topological insulators can be crafted in materials that exhibit a strong nonlinear response, thus opening the door to the exploration of the interplay between nonlinearity and topological effects. Among the fascinating new phenomena arising from this interplay is the formation of topological edge solitons -- hybrid asymmetric states localized across and along the interface due to different physical mechanisms. Such solitons have so far been studied only in materials with Kerr-type, or cubic, nonlinearity. Here the first example of the topological edge soliton supported by parametric interactions in $\chi^{(2)}$ nonlinear media is presented. Such solitons exist in Floquet topological insulators realized in arrays of helical waveguides made of a phase-matchable $\chi^{(2)}$ material. Floquet edge solitons bifurcate from topological edge states in the spectrum of the fundamental frequency wave and remain localized over propagation distances drastically exceeding the helix period, while travelling along the edge of the structure. A theory of such states is developed. It is shown that multicolor solitons in a Floquet system exists in the vicinity of (formally infinite) set of linear resonances determined by the Floquet phase matching conditions. Away from resonance, soliton envelopes can be described by a period-averaged single nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an effective cubic nonlinear coefficient whose magnitude and sign depend on the overall phase-mismatch between the fundamental frequency and second harmonic waves.

Abstract:A salient feature of solid-state topological materials in two dimensions is the presence of conducting electronic edge states that are insensitive to scattering by disorder. Such unidirectional edge states have been explored in many experimental settings beyond solid-state electronic systems, including in photonic devices, mechanical and acoustic structures, and others. It is of great interest to understand how topological states behave in the presence of inter-particle interactions and nonlinearity. Here we experimentally demonstrate unidirectional soliton-like nonlinear states on the edge of photonic topological insulators consisting of laser-written waveguides. As a result of the optical Kerr nonlinearity of the ambient glass, the soliton-like wavepacket forms a non-diffracting coherent structure that slowly radiates power because of the intrinsic gaplessness of the system. The realization of soliton-like edge states paves the way to an understanding of topological phenomena in nonlinear systems and those with inter-particle interactions.

Observation of Topological Band Gap Solitons

Abstract:Topological materials exhibit properties dictated by quantised invariants that make them robust against perturbations. This topological protection is a universal wave phenomenon that applies not only in the context of electrons in solid-state materials but also to photonic systems, ultracold atoms, mechanical systems, circuits, exciton-polaritons and beyond. However, the vast majority of research in these systems has focused on the linear domain, i.e., where inter-particle interactions do not play a role. Here, we experimentally observe solitons -- waves that propagate without changing shape as a result of nonlinearity -- in the bulk of a photonic Floquet topological insulator. These solitons exhibit fundamentally different behaviour than solitons in ordinary band gaps in that they execute cyclotron-like orbits that are associated with the topology of the lattice. Specifically, we employ a laser-written waveguide array with periodic variations along the waveguide axis that give rise to non-zero Floquet winding number, where the nonlinearity arises from the optical Kerr effect of the ambient glass. The effect described here is applicable to a range of bosonic systems due to its description by the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, i.e., the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with attractive interactions.

Topological edge states in photonic Floquet insulator with unpaired Dirac cones

Abstract:Topological insulators are most frequently constructed using lattices with specific degeneracies in their linear spectra, such as Dirac points. For a broad class of lattices, such as honeycomb ones, these points and associated Dirac cones generally appear in non-equivalent pairs. Simultaneous breakup of the time-reversal and inversion symmetry in systems based on such lattices may result in the formation of the unpaired Dirac cones in bulk spectrum, but the existence of topologically protected edge states in such structures remains an open problem. Here photonic Floquet insulator on honeycomb lattice with unpaired Dirac cones in its spectrum is introduced that can support unidirectional edge states appearing at the edge between two regions with opposite sublattice detuning. Topological properties of this system are characterized by the nonzero valley Chern number. Remarkably, edge states in this system can circumvent sharp corners without inter-valley scattering even though there is no total forbidden gap in the spectrum. Our results reveal unusual interplay between two different physical mechanisms of creation of topological edge states based on simultaneous breakup of different symmetries of the system.

Abstract:One dimensional laser-written modulated photonic lattices are known to be particularly suitable for diffraction management purposes. Here, we address the connection between discrete non-diffracting states and topological properties in such devices through the experimental observation and identification of three classes of non-diffracting state. The first one corresponds to topologically protected edge states, recently predicted in Floquet topological insulators, while the second and third are both bulk modes. One of them testifies of a topological transition, although presenting topological features different from those of the edge states, whether the other one result from specific band structure engineering.

Abstract:Nonlinearities in lattices with topological band structures can induce topological interfaces in the bulk of structures and give rise to bulk solitons in the topological bandgaps. Here we study a photonic Chern insulator with saturable nonlinearity and show the existence of topological bulk solitons. The fundamental bulk solitons exhibit as semi-vortex solitons, where only one pseudospin component has a nonzero vorticity. The bulk solitons have equal angular momentum at different valleys. This phenomenon is a direct outcome of the topology of the linear host lattice and the angular momentum can be changed by switching the sign of the nonlinearity. The bulk solitons bifurcate from the linear bulk band edge and terminate when their powers saturate. We find that these bulk solitons are stable within the whole spectrum range. Moreover, these bulk solitons are robust against lattice disorders both from on-site energies and hopping amplitudes. Our work extends the study of Chern insulators into the nonlinear regime and highlights the interplay between topology and nonlinearity.

Abstract:We show that one-dimensional Floquet trimer arrays with periodically oscillating waveguides support two different and co-existing types of topological Floquet edge states in two different topological gaps in Floquet spectrum. In these systems nontrivial topology is introduced by longitudinal periodic oscillations of the waveguide centers, leading to the formation of Floquet edge states in certain range of oscillation amplitudes despite the fact that the structure spends half of the period in ``instantaneously'' nontopological phase, and only during other half-period it is ``instantaneously'' topological. Two co-existing Floquet edge states are characterized by different phase relations between bright spots in the unit cell -- in one mode these spots are in-phase, while in other mode they are out-of-phase. We show that in focusing nonlinear medium topological Floquet edge solitons, representing exactly periodic nonlinear localized Floquet states, can bifurcate from both these types of linear edge states. Both types of Floquet edge solitons can be stable and can be created dynamically using two-site excitations.

Abstract:We present Floquet fractal topological insulators: photonic topological insulators in a fractal-dimensional lattice consisting of helical waveguides. The helical modulation induces an artificial gauge field and leads to the trivial-to-topological transition. The quasienergy spectrum shows the existence of topological edge states corresponding to real-space Chern number 1. We study the propagation of light along the outer edges of the fractal lattice and find that wavepackets move along the edges without penetrating into the bulk or backscattering even in the presence of disorder. In a similar vein, we find that the inner edges of the fractal lattice also exhibit robust transport when the fractal is of sufficiently high generation. Finally, we find topological edge-states that span the circumference of a hybrid half-fractal half-honeycomb lattice, passing from the edge of the honeycomb lattice to the edge of the fractal structure virtually without scattering, despite the transition from two-dimensions to a fractal dimension. Our system offers a realizable experimental platform to study topological fractals and provides new directions for exploring topological physics.

Abstract:We review methods for using time-periodic fields (e.g., laser or microwave fields) to induce non-equilibrium topological phenomena in quantum many-body systems. We discuss how such fields can be used to change the topological properties of the single particle spectrum, and key experimental demonstrations in solid state, cold atomic, and photonic systems. The single particle Floquet band structure provides a stage on which the system's dynamics play out; the crucial question is then how to obtain robust topological behaviour in the many-particle setting. In the regime of mesoscopic transport, we discuss manifestations of topological edge states induced in the Floquet spectrum. Outside the context of mesoscopic transport, the main challenge of inducing stable topological phases in many-body Floquet systems is their tendency to absorb energy from the drive and thereby to heat up. We discuss three routes to overcoming this challenge: long-lived transient dynamics and prethermalization, disorder-induced many-body localization, and engineered couplings to external baths. We discuss the types of phenomena that can be explored in each of these regimes, and their experimental realizations.

Abstract:Topological insulators constitute a novel state of matter with scatter-free edge states surrounding an insulating bulk. Conventional wisdom regards the insulating bulk as essential, since the invariants describing the topological properties of the system are defined therein. Here, we study fractal topological insulators based on exact fractals comprised exclusively of edge sites. We present experimental proof that, despite the lack of bulk bands, photonic lattices of helical waveguides support topologically protected chiral edge states. We show that light transport in our topological fractal system features increased velocities compared to the corresponding honeycomb lattice. By going beyond the confines of the bulk-boundary correspondence, our findings pave the way toward an expanded perception of topological insulators and open a new chapter of topological fractals.

Abstract:Abstract Higher-order topological insulators are a novel topological phase beyond the framework of conventional bulk–boundary correspondence 1,2 . In these peculiar systems, the topologically non-trivial boundary modes are characterized by a co-dimension of at least two 3,4 . Despite several promising preliminary considerations regarding the impact of nonlinearity in such systems 5,6 , the flourishing field of experimental higher-order topological insulator research has thus far been confined to the linear evolution of topological states. As such, the observation of the interplay between nonlinearity and the dynamics of higher-order topological phases in conservative systems remains elusive. Here we experimentally demonstrate nonlinear higher-order topological corner states. Our photonic platform enables us to observe nonlinear topological corner states as well as the formation of solitons in such topological structures. Our work paves the way towards the exploration of topological properties of matter in the nonlinear regime, and may herald a new class of compact devices that harnesses the intriguing features of topology in an on-demand fashion.

Abstract:Topological insulators—materials that are insulating in the bulk but allow electrons to flow on their surface—are striking examples of materials in which topological invariants are manifested in robustness against perturbations such as defects and disorder1. Their most prominent feature is the emergence of edge states at the boundary between areas with different topological properties. The observable physical effect is unidirectional robust transport of these edge states. Topological insulators were originally observed in the integer quantum Hall effect2 (in which conductance is quantized in a strong magnetic field) and subsequently suggested3–5 and observed6 to exist without a magnetic field, by virtue of other effects such as strong spin–orbit interaction. These were systems of correlated electrons. During the past decade, the concepts of topological physics have been introduced into other fields, including microwaves7,8, photonic systems9,10, cold atoms11,12, acoustics13,14 and even mechanics15. Recently, topological insulators were suggested to be possible in exciton-polariton systems16–18 organized as honeycomb (graphene-like) lattices, under the influence of a magnetic field. Exciton-polaritons are part-light, part-matter quasiparticles that emerge from strong coupling of quantum-well excitons and cavity photons19. Accordingly, the predicted topological effects differ from all those demonstrated thus far. Here we demonstrate experimentally an exciton-polariton topological insulator. Our lattice of coupled semiconductor microcavities is excited non-resonantly by a laser, and an applied magnetic field leads to the unidirectional flow of a polariton wavepacket around the edge of the array. This chiral edge mode is populated by a polariton condensation mechanism. We use scanning imaging techniques in real space and Fourier space to measure photoluminescence and thus visualize the mode as it propagates. We demonstrate that the topological edge mode goes around defects, and that its propagation direction can be reversed by inverting the applied magnetic field. Our exciton-polariton topological insulator paves the way for topological phenomena that involve light–matter interaction, amplification and the interaction of exciton-polaritons as a nonlinear many-body system.

Abstract:The urinary excretion of thiamine has been used for some time as an empirical indication of thiamine nutrition. The tacit assumption is made that when the dietary intake of the vitamin is at or below the h;man “requirement” the urinary excretion falls below a certain value, but as long as the dietary intake exceeds the requirement the urinary excretion remains above this critical level (10). This assumption was originally made without a clear understanding of the range of the variation in excretion values under controlled dietary conditions. In most cases the controlled studies were made over very short periods, so it is likely that many of the subjects had not attained equilibrium in their urinary excretion of thiamine. Furthermore, in many cases, the methods used for the determination of thiamine in the urine are open to some question (12). Very few reports have utilized statistical methods, even where the data were sufficient to warrant such use. A notable example of this is the series of papers by the group at the Mayo Clinic (9,18). Although they collected urine samples from subjects who were maintained on const,ant thiamine intakes for periods as long as 7 months, only a single average value for the urinary thiamine is given for each period. Elsom, Reinhold, Nicholson, and Chornock (4) have given the standard deviations for the urinary thiamine excretions of nine women who consumed a constant amount of thiamine for indefinite periods. They and Wertz and Mitchell (17) are the only investigators who seem to have given this problem any considera-

Abstract:We introduce a different class of thresholdless three-dimensional soliton states that form in higher-order topological insulators based on a two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger array of coupled waveguides. The linear spectrum of such structures is characterized by the presence of a topological gap with corner states residing in them. We find that a focusing Kerr nonlinearity allows families of light bullets bifurcating from the linear corner states to exist as stable three-dimensional solitons, which inherit topological protection from their linear corner counterparts and, remarkably, survive even in the presence of considerable disorder. The light bullets exhibit a spatial localization degree that depends strongly on the array dimerization and may feature large temporal widths in the topological gap near the bifurcation point, thus drastically reducing the otherwise strong instabilities caused by higher-order effects.

Abstract:Topology has been revealed to play a fundamental role in physics in the past decades. Topological insulators have unconventional gapless edge states where disorder-induced back-scattering is suppressed. In photonics, such edge states lead to unidirectional waveguides which are useful for integrated photonic chips. Cavity modes, another type of fundamental components in photonic chips, however, are not protected by band topology because of their lower dimensions. Here we demonstrate that concurrent wavevector-space and real-space topology, dubbed as the "dual-topology", can lead to light-trapping in lower-dimensions. The resultant photonic bound state emerges as a Jackiw-Rebbi soliton mode localized on a dislocation in a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal, as predicted theoretically and discovered experimentally. Such a strongly-confined 0D localized mode, which is solely due to the topological mechanism, is found to be robust against perturbations. Our study unveils a new mechanism for topological light-trapping in lower-dimensions, which is valuable for fundamental physics and a variety of applications in photonics.

Abstract:Photonic topological systems may be exploited in topological quantum light generation, the development of topological lasers, the implementation of photonic routing systems and optical parametric amplification. Here, we leverage the strong light confinement of an ultra-silicon-rich nitride (USRN) topological waveguide adopting the 1D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) system with a topological domain wall. We present the formation and propagation of temporal optical solitons in the topological waveguide, exhibiting two-fold temporal compression. We further observe a saturation in the output power at sufficiently high input powers. It is further observed that pulse propagation through a trivial, non-topological waveguide does not lead to similar temporal soliton dynamics. The demonstrated topological system allows for the temporal compression to be manipulated through power tuning via topological control of delocalization of the topological mode. This design degree of freedom allows temporal solitons to be generated in a topological waveguide while providing straightforward control of temporal pulses in practical applications.

Abstract:Floquet topological insulators are topological phases of matter generated by the application of time-periodic perturbations on otherwise conventional insulators. We demonstrate that spatial variations in the time-periodic potential lead to localized quasi-stationary states in two-dimensional systems. These states include one-dimensional interface modes at the nodes of the external potential, and fractionalized excitations at vortices of the external potential. We also propose a setup by which light can induce currents in these systems. We explain these results by showing a close analogy to px+ipy superconductors.

Abstract:Discrete spatial solitons are self-consistent solutions of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation that maintain their shape during propagation. Here we show, using a pump-probe technique, that soliton formation can be used to optically induce and control a linear topological end state in the bulk of a Su–Schrieffer–Heeger lattice, using evanescently-coupled waveguide arrays. Specifically, we observe an abrupt nonlinearly-induced transition above a certain power threshold due to an inversion symmetry-breaking nonlinear bifurcation. Our results demonstrate all-optical active control of topological states.

Bulk soliton dynamics in bosonic topological insulators

Abstract:We theoretically explore the dynamics of spatial solitons in nonlinear/interacting bosonic topological insulators. We employ a time-reversal broken Lieb-lattice analog of a Chern insulator and find that in the presence of a saturable nonlinearity, solitons bifurcate from a band of non-zero Chern number into the topological band gap with vortex-like structure on a sublattice. We numerically demonstrate the existence stable vortex solitons for a range of parameters and that the lattice soliton dynamics are subject to the anomalous velocity associated with large Berry curvature at the topological Lieb band edge. The features of the vortex solitons are well described by a new underlying continuum Dirac model. We further show a new kind of interaction: when these topological solitons `bounce' off the edge of a finite structure, they create chiral edge states, and this give rise to an "anomalous" reflection of the soliton from the boundary.
