Abstract:A salient feature of solid-state topological materials in two dimensions is the presence of conducting electronic edge states that are insensitive to scattering by disorder. Such unidirectional edge states have been explored in many experimental settings beyond solid-state electronic systems, including in photonic devices, mechanical and acoustic structures, and others. It is of great interest to understand how topological states behave in the presence of inter-particle interactions and nonlinearity. Here we experimentally demonstrate unidirectional soliton-like nonlinear states on the edge of photonic topological insulators consisting of laser-written waveguides. As a result of the optical Kerr nonlinearity of the ambient glass, the soliton-like wavepacket forms a non-diffracting coherent structure that slowly radiates power because of the intrinsic gaplessness of the system. The realization of soliton-like edge states paves the way to an understanding of topological phenomena in nonlinear systems and those with inter-particle interactions.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore how to realize unidirectional soliton - like edge states in nonlinear Floquet topological insulators. Specifically, through experiments, the researchers demonstrated that in photonic topological insulators, using waveguide arrays inscribed by lasers, they observed soliton - like wave packets formed under the nonlinear effect caused by the optical Kerr effect. These wave packets can propagate over long distances while maintaining their shapes on the edge, although due to the inherent gapless property of the system, they will radiate power at a small but non - zero rate.
### Main Problem Analysis
1. **Combination of Nonlinearity and Topological States**
- The paper explores the behavior of topological states in the presence of inter - particle interactions and nonlinear conditions. This is an important scientific problem because traditional topological material theories are mainly based on linear systems, and nonlinear effects may introduce new physical phenomena.
2. **Formation Mechanism of Soliton - like Edge States**
- The researchers experimentally observed that under specific nonlinear conditions, soliton - like wave packets can be formed on the edge of two - dimensional anomalous photonic Floquet topological insulators. These wave packets can propagate unidirectionally on the edge and can maintain their shapes within a certain power range without significant diffraction.
3. **Stability of Nonlinear Wave Packets**
- Due to the inherent gapless property of the system, any nonlinear wave packet will radiate energy into the surrounding extended modes at a certain rate. Therefore, these soliton - like wave packets have a finite lifetime, but by adjusting the system parameters (such as the δ value), their lifetime can be controlled.
### Experimental Methods and Results
- **Experimental Setup**
- A periodically modulated square waveguide array was fabricated in a borosilicate glass substrate using femtosecond laser writing technology, and each array contains 56 waveguides.
- The periodic driving protocol was realized by changing the coupling distance between the waveguides, thereby simulating the breaking of time - reversal symmetry.
- **Experimental Results**
- By injecting laser pulses with different powers, it was observed that within a specific power range, the input wave packets can propagate unidirectionally on the edge and maintain their shapes.
- By calculating the inverse participation ratio (IPR) to quantify the localization degree of the wave packets, it was found that the IPR reaches a peak within a certain power range, corresponding to the formation of soliton - like wave packets.
- The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical simulations, verifying the existence of soliton - like edge states.
### Significance and Prospects
- **Theory and Application**
- This research not only deepens the understanding of topological protection mechanisms in nonlinear systems but also provides a theoretical basis and technical support for the development of new nonlinear photonic devices.
- Future research directions may include further exploring the interactions between topological edge states, nonlinearity, and disorder, and how to utilize these phenomena in practical applications, such as in optical switches, on - chip frequency combs, and supercontinuum generation.
In conclusion, through experimental and theoretical analysis, this paper successfully observed soliton - like edge states in nonlinear Floquet topological insulators, providing a new perspective for understanding topological phenomena in nonlinear systems.
