Abstract:Objectives. To provide updated evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effectiveness of laser acupuncture for patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods. A literature search in 9 databases was conducted from their inception through February 2019. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) written in English that compared active laser acupuncture with placebo in KOA patients were included. Two authors independently extracted data from these trials. Meta-analysis software was used to analyze the data. Included studies were assessed in terms of the follow-up period, the methodological quality, and appropriateness of their technical features. Results. Of 357 studies, seven RCTs (totaling 395 patients) met the inclusion criteria. The short-term outcomes showed that laser acupuncture offered significant pain relief over placebo when assessed by the 100mm visual analog scale (VAS) pain score (p=0.02), while there was no significant difference between laser acupuncture and placebo based on Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) pain score (p=0.25). For subgroup analysis, laser acupuncture had superiority over placebo in terms of both VAS and WOMAC pain scores in the appropriate technical features subgroup and the excellent methodological quality subgroup. But the effect of laser acupuncture on pain relief was not maintained in terms of either VAS (p=0.19) or WOMAC pain score (p=0.60). The pooled effect showed no significant difference between laser acupuncture and placebo at either time point according to WOMAC function scale, WOMAC stiffness scale, and quality of life outcome. Conclusions. Our findings indicate that laser acupuncture can effectively reduce knee pain for patients with KOA at short term when appropriate technical features are applied, but the effect likely fades away during the subsequent follow-up period.

The car had a manual transmission and clutch, and we bucked and lurched around town. Each intersection, even each gear shift, posed a challenge that demanded my full attention – if only I could have given it. Instead, my mind was churning with embarrassment at my incompetence, driven to fever pitch by the chorus of horns that greeted me each time I stalled in traffic. I could barely follow the simplest directions from my brother, and his occasional attempts to calm things down with conversation fell on deaf ears. Despite himself, he groaned quietly as I ground the gears and lugged the engine. Like everyone, I eventually I got the hang of driving – the way we eventually get the hang of talking, eating without a bib, telling a joke without ruining it, finding our way in a strange city, or politely discouraging an over-eager salesman. Both groups then received low-level laser therapy combined with exercise three times a week for the following 8 weeks.Main outcome measuresThe primary outcome was change in knee pain and disability (Lequesne). Secondary outcomes included change in mobility (Timed Up and Go test), range of motion (goniometer), muscular strength (dynamometer), activity (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis questionnaire), and medication intake and relief.ResultsMean (SD) age of participants was 63.02 (9.9) years. Pain scores at baseline, 3 weeks, 11 weeks, and 6 months follow-up were 9.1 (1.3), 2.6 (2.3), 0.2 (0.9), and 0.2 (0.8) for the Laser group and 9.5 (8.0), 7.7 (5.3), 5.6 (2.4), and 7.4 (5.0) for the Placebo group, respectively. Disability scores at baseline, 3 weeks, 11 weeks, and 6 months follow-up were 14.9 (4.7), 7.6 (4.8), 3.9 (4.2), and 3.5 (4.1) for the Laser group and 17.8 (14.7), 15.2 (11.5), 11.6 (6.4), and 15.8 (11.9) for the Placebo Group, respectively.ConclusionIn participants with osteoarthritis of the knee, the isolated application of low-level laser therapy in the initial 3 weeks and combined with exercises in the final 8 weeks reduced pain, disability, and intake of medication over a 6-month period.

Efficacy and specificity of laser acupuncture on the treatment of knee osteoarthritis

Abstract:Background: Infrared light or near infrared light mainly serves as light source of laser acupuncture and moxibustion. It can penetrate biotic tissues with no heat effect. Objective: To explore the efficacy on 650 nm and 10.6 μ m laser irradiation combined acupuncture for treatment of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Design, time and setting: The randomized, single-blinded comparative observation was performed at Shuguang Hospital of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from November 2005 to June 2006. Participants: Forty patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were selected from Shuguang Hospital of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and randomly divided into acupoint irradiation group (n=20), and non-acupoint irradiation group (control group, n=20). Methods: They either received 650 nm semiconductor and 10.6 μ m CO2 laser irradiation at Dubi acupoint (ST35) or at the control point (capitulum fibulae). Main outcome measures: The outcome was assessed using the scores of symptom and physical sign of knee osteoarthritis; the curative effects of two irradiation methods were compared and the dropout rate of both groups and drug use during the treatment were analyzed. Results: Of the 40 patients, 36 completed 6 sessions of treatment for weeks, and 31 completed 12 sessions for 4 weeks. Because the dropout rate of the control point group was more than 20% after 6 sessions of treatment, only the pre- and post-treatment scores of symptom and physical sign of patients who completed the first 6 sessions were analyzed. The acupoint irradiation of 2 weeks reduced the scores of symptom and physical sign by 24.88%, which showed significant differences than before treatment (P < 0.001). The group of irradiation at non-acupoint reduced the score of symptom and physical sign by 14.32%, which also showed significant differences (P < 0.05). No pre- or post-treatment differences were found between two groups in the scores of symptom and physical sign (P=0.909 and P=0.541). There were no statistical differences in dropout rate at the second treatment course, medication and evaluation after treatment between two groups (P=0.195). Conclusion: Laser irradiation at Dubi acupoint seems significantly beneficial to patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. However, due to the small sample size and high dropout rate of patients in the control group, the specific effect of Dubi acupoint should be further examined.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background and purpose</h3><p>Total knee replacement is the most effective intervention for late-stage osteoarthritis; however, a major concern is postoperative recovery of physical function. This randomised controlled trial evaluated the effects of acupuncture with low-level laser therapy (ALLLT) on early outcomes of physical function after total knee replacement.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Materials and methods</h3><p>Eighty-two osteoarthritis patients were recruited and randomly assigned to the experimental group receiving ALLLT or the control group receiving sham ALLLT without laser beam output. Physical function was evaluated by assessing knee joint flexion and stiffness on days 1, 2, and 3 after total knee replacement.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Generalised estimating equations revealed a significant difference between the two groups in joint flexion. The experimental group displayed better joint flexion and less stiffness on days 2 and 3 than did the control group.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>ALLLT can facilitate the recovery of physical function, as evidenced by knee joint flexion and stiffness, in patients receiving total knee replacement.</p>

Abstract:Background: Low-level (LLLT) and high-intensity laser therapy (HILT) can be beneficial additions to knee osteoarthritis (KOA) rehabilitation exercises; however, it is still being determined which electrophysical agent is more effective. Aim: To compare the effects of LLLT and HILT as adjuncts to rehabilitation exercises (LL + EX and HL + EX) on clinical outcomes in KOA. Methods: Thirty-four adults with mild-to-moderate KOA were randomly allocated to either LL + EX or HL + EX (n = 17 each). Both groups underwent their respective intervention weekly for twelve weeks: LL + EX (400 mW, 830 nm, 10 to 12 J/cm2, and 400 J per session) or HL + EX (5 W, 1064 nm, 19 to 150 J/cm2, and 3190 J per session). The laser probe was placed vertically in contact with the knee and moved in a slow-scan manner on the antero-medial/lateral sides of the knee joint. Participants' Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), active knee flexion, and Timed Up-and-Go test (TUG) were assessed. Results: Post intervention, both groups showed improvements in their KOOS, NPRS, active knee flexion, and TUG scores compared to baseline (p < 0.01). The mean difference of change in KOOS, NPRS, and active knee flexion scores for the HL + EX group surpassed the minimal clinically important difference threshold. In contrast, the LL + EX group only demonstrated clinical significance for the NPRS scores. Conclusions: Incorporating HILT as an adjunct to usual KOA rehabilitation led to significantly higher improvements in pain, physical function, and knee-related disability compared to LLLT applied in scanning mode.

Abstract:PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of n-HA/PA66 plate as a guided implant for the regeneration of the soft tissue defects in palatal region of goats. METHODS 12 goats were divided into experimental group and control group at random. 18.0 mm x 14.0 mm soft tissue defect and 15.0 mm x 13.0 mm hard tissue defect were formed artificially in hard palate. n-HA/PA66 plates were implanted to the defect in the experimental group. The tissue regeneration in the defects was observed and the structure of regenerating tissue was analyzed by histology. RESULTS The mucoperiosteal tissue in the experimental group regenerated along the n-HA/PA66 plates and the mucoperiosteal defects were closed in 6 weeks. The soft and hard tissues were not closed up in control group in 6 weeks. CONCLUSION n-HA/PA66 plates can guide the regeneration of mucoperiosteal tissue to close the palatal defects.
Effect of Combined Laser Acupuncture on Knee Osteoarthritis: a Pilot Study.

Abstract:Our objective was to assess the efficacy and safety of combined 10.6 μm and 650 nm laser irradiation on patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Forty patients with OA were randomly allocated to an active laser group or to a placebo laser group (20 per group). They either received active or sham laser treatment at acupoint Dubi (ST 35) in a total of 12 sessions. There was significant difference between the two groups in the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) osteoarthritis index pain score change from baseline after 2 weeks of treatment (P = 0.047). The pain reduction of the active laser treatment group was 49%, whereas that of the placebo control group was only 13%. However, due to the high patient drop-out rate, the 4-week assessment could not be analyzed. Combined laser treatment seems beneficial to patients with knee OA. However, due to the small sample size and the high drop-out rate of patients in the placebo group, a large sample-size clinical trial is warranted to determine further the therapeutic efficacy of the device.

Abstract:Objectives Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is not recommended in major knee osteoarthritis (KOA) treatment guidelines. We investigated whether a LLLT dose–response relationship exists in KOA. Design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Data sources Eligible articles were identified through PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Physiotherapy Evidence Database and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials on 18 February 2019, reference lists, a book, citations and experts in the field. Eligibility criteria for selecting studies We solely included randomised placebo-controlled trials involving participants with KOA according to the American College of Rheumatology and/or Kellgren/Lawrence criteria, in which LLLT was applied to participants’ knee(s). There were no language restrictions. Data extraction and synthesis The included trials were synthesised with random effects meta-analyses and subgrouped by dose using the World Association for Laser Therapy treatment recommendations. Cochrane’s risk-of-bias tool was used. Results 22 trials (n=1063) were meta-analysed. Risk of bias was insignificant. Overall, pain was significantly reduced by LLLT compared with placebo at the end of therapy (14.23 mm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS; 95% CI 7.31 to 21.14)) and during follow-ups 1–12 weeks later (15.92 mm VAS (95% CI 6.47 to 25.37)). The subgroup analysis revealed that pain was significantly reduced by the recommended LLLT doses compared with placebo at the end of therapy (18.71 mm (95% CI 9.42 to 27.99)) and during follow-ups 2–12 weeks after the end of therapy (23.23 mm VAS (95% CI 10.60 to 35.86)). The pain reduction from the recommended LLLT doses peaked during follow-ups 2–4 weeks after the end of therapy (31.87 mm VAS significantly beyond placebo (95% CI 18.18 to 45.56)). Disability was also statistically significantly reduced by LLLT. No adverse events were reported. Conclusion LLLT reduces pain and disability in KOA at 4–8 J with 785–860 nm wavelength and at 1–3 J with 904 nm wavelength per treatment spot. PROSPERO registration number CRD42016035587.

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of combined low-level laser therapy (LLL) and rehabilitation in patients following recent total knee replacement (TKR). Methods: A double-blind randomized controlled study was conducted at the Orthopedic Department of Mansoura University Hospital. Forty-four patients were chosen from a total of 58 patients who met the inclusion criteria and were assigned randomly into control and experimental groups of equal size. Ultimately, 40 patients completed the study (20 from each group). Both groups participated in an intensive functional rehabilitation program, and the experimental group also received LLL therapy around the knee at the incisional line, the medial and lateral intra-articular space, above and below the patella, and at the popliteal fossa at low fluence (6 J/cm2, 650 nm continuous wave) and 60 s per point with a total dose of 48 J per session over 12 treatment sessions for six weeks. Knee range of motion (ROM) was measured with a digital goniometer, and functional abilities were assessed with the Arabic version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) index. Results: There were significant differences in all variables pre- and post-treatment within each group. Before treatment, there was no significant difference in any of the measured variables between the groups (P>0.05). After treatment, there were significant differences in knee flexion ROM and WOMAC index (P<0.05) but no significant difference in knee extension ROM between the groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: The addition of low-level laser therapy to a rehabilitation program post-TKR resulted in substantial enhancements in knee flexion range of motion and the WOMAC index.

Abstract:Objective: The goals of the present study were to evaluate the effect and safety of combined 10.6 mu m and 650 nm laser acupuncture-moxibustion on patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and to validate a nonacupoint sham control for assessing the effect of point specificity on the treatment. Materials and Methods: A randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial was conducted in an outpatient clinical setting on patients with knee OA (n = 40). Laser irradiation was performed on acupoint Dubi (ST35) and a sham point three times a week for 4 wk. Outcome measurements were performed at baseline and at wk 2 and 4 using Western Ontario and McMaster Universities' Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Results: At the 2-wk assessment, i.e., after 6 treatments, improvement in the WOMAC pain score of the acupoint group was significantly greater than that of the control group (49.21% vs. 11.99%, respectively; p = 0.021). However, there were no significant differences between the two groups in the WOMAC physical function score (p = 0.129) or joint stiffness score (p = 0.705). No side effects were found during the trial. Conclusions: Combined 10.6-mu m-650-nm laser acupuncture-moxibustion on acupoint ST35 is safe to use and was effective after 2-wk treatment, but not at the 4-wk assessment, in relieving knee OA pain compared to a nonacupoint sham control. A larger clinical trial to verify our findings is warranted.

Abstract:Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is a debilitating condition affecting knee joints, leading to cartilage and bone damage and potential disability. [ 1 ] Joint discomfort, stiffness, edema, and decreased range of motion, and even weakness or numbness are typical symptoms, significantly impacting daily activities. [ 1 ] In an aging society, KOA is prevalent among older individuals, as well as among workers and athletes. [ 1 , 2 ] While acetaminophen and NSAIDs are commonly used for pain management, their long-term use is limited due to adverse effects on the gastrointestinal, renal, cardiac, and hematological systems. [ 3 ] Studies suggest that opioids do not offer significant benefits over NSAIDs for OA pain relief and may pose more risks than benefits, prompting interest in complementary medicine. [ 2 , 3 ] The Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) plays a crucial role in assessing OA patients' symptoms and improvement rates, focusing on pain, stiffness, and physical function. Abstract:The purpose of this study was to compare the therapeutic effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) with 808 and 660 nm wavelength on muscle strength and functional outcomes in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA). A total of 47 participants were randomly assigned to the 808 nm, 660 nm, and sham control groups. Two LLLT groups received continuous LLLT with a mean power of 300 mW in different wavelengths at the knee joint 15 min a session three days per week for eight weeks, while the control group received the sham LED treatment. The knee strength and functional performance involving 30-s sit-to-stand, 40 m fast-paced walk, stair climbing, and the TUG test were measured at the baseline and one week after the interventions were completed. The results showed that knee extensor strength was more improved in the 808 nm group as compared to the 660 nm group (p < 0.001, d = 0.57) and the sham control (p < 0.001, d = 0.40), while increased flexor strength was demonstrated in the 808 nm (p = 0.009, d = 0.67) and sham control groups (p < 0.001, d = 0.97). The number of 30-s sit-to-stand was increased only in the 660 nm group (p = 0.006, d = 0.49). All three groups exhibited improvements in the other three functional performance-based tests after the interventions with no statistically significant differences among the groups. In conclusion, both intervention groups improved muscle strength and functional performance as compared to the control group. The 808 nm wavelength group showed better results in knee extensor strength. Therefore, laser therapy is suggested to be integrated into rehabilitation programs to improve muscle strength and functional performance in the population with knee OA.

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the effects of 650nm-10.6μm compound laser on patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA).Methods:Fifty-six patients with knee OA were randomly divided into compound laser group and RLED group(28 per group),receiving a 20-minute irradiation with 650nm-10.6μm compound laser or red light emitting diode respectively on acupoint Dubi (ST35)for 6 weeks,14 times in all.This was a randomized,double-blinded,placebo-controlled clinical study;main outcome measures were Western Ontario and McMaster Universities' Osteoarthritis Scale(WOMAC VA3.1)scores.In addition,patients'global assessment was analyzed.Results:No difference of general data of patients was found in between-group comparison before treatment(P＞0.05),either of WOMAC scores(pain,stiffness and function,respectively)were found in between-group comparison(all P＞0.05).The WOMAC scores(pain,stiffness and function,respectively)of both goups reduced significantly compared with baseline after 2 or 6 weeks treatment and 4 weeks after treatment(all P＜0.01);Though there was no significant difference of WOMAC scores(pain,stiffness and function,respectively)between two groups(all P＞0.05),the reduce rate of the compound laser group was better than that of the RLED group.Neither the patients' global assessment showed statistical differences between two groups(P＞0.05).Conclusion:650nm-10.6μm compound laser was beneficial to patients with knee OA.But there was no statistical differences between the compound laser and the red light irradiation.Further study and a larger samplesize were required.
High-intensity laser therapy on pain relief in symptomatic knee osteoarthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of global disability and pain. Objective: To investigate whether High-Intensity Laser therapy has superior pain-relieving effects in individuals with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. Methods: Searches were conducted using CENTRAL, MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, Web of Science, PEDro, and related reference lists with language limed to English. Clinical trials investigating the effectiveness of High-Intensity Laser therapy compared to other laser therapies, conventional therapies or exercises on knee osteoarthritis pain were included. The screening and selection of studies, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment were performed by two independent researchers. Studies were quantitatively integrated using the Review Manager Software and qualitative analysis using the criteria recommended by the Cochrane Collaboration. Results: Nine studies meeting the eligibility criteria were identified, among which only one study was identified as excellent methodology quality, six was marked as good quality, and the remaining two studies were regarded as fair or poor quality. All studies reported positive effects of High-Intensity Laser therapy on knee osteoarthritis pain. Two studies (136 people) gave indication that there was moderate evidence that High-Intensity Laser therapy could be a promising new possibility in pain relief among patients with knee osteoarthritis compared with sham laser therapy in a short-term treatment (MD, -2.04, 95% CI, -2.12 to -1.96; Z= 51.01, P< 0.01). Four studies (160 people) showed that High-Intensity Laser therapy could be an effective modality on treating pain compared to conventional physiotherapies in decreasing visual analog scale score (MD, -0.98, 95% CI, -1.19 to -0.76; Z= 9.02, P< 0.01). Three studies (123 people) demonstrated that High-Intensity Laser therapy combined with exercises was more effective than placebo laser or lower-intensity laser combined with exercises in alleviating pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis (MD, -1.54, 95% CI, -1.84 to -1.24; Z= 10.06, P< 0.01). Conclusion: High-Intensity Laser therapy could be a promising and recommended modality in alleviating knee osteoarthritis pain, especially when it was implemented in combination with exercises.

Abstract:Objective:To observe the efficacy and specificity of combined laser irradiation on acupoints of patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA).Methods: Randomized,single blinded controlled clinical trial was conducted on patients with knee OA by giving an experimental group combined 10.6μm～650nm laser irradiation at acupoint Dubi(ST35) and a control group non-acupoint treatment.WOMAC score was adopted as the criterion for therapeutic evaluation.Results: The WOMAC pain(P=0.000) and physical function(P=0.014) scores of the acupoint Dubi(ST35) group improved significantly at two weeks,while those of the non-acupoint control group did not(P=0.110~P=0.699).No significant differences at each score were found between the acupoint Dubi(ST35) group and non-acupoint control group before and after the treatment(P=0.101~P=0.983).Conclusions: Combined 10.6μm-650nm laser irradiation at acupoint Dubi(ST35) has an obvious therapeutic efficacy on patients with knee OA.The effect has a certain degree of specificity to acupoint Dubi(ST35).However,due to the small sample size of this study and the high dropout rate of patients in the control group,a larger sample-sized clinical trial is warranted to further validate the specificity of the acupoint Dubi(ST35)

Abstract:Seven men were rotated at 5.4 revs/min in a room for 64 hr. Controlled tests before and during this interval demonstrated that disorientation and nystagmus attributable to Coriolis acceleration effects diminished markedly. A compensatory nystagmus, induced by head or whole-body movements, was recorded more than 1 hr after the rotation had ceased. Factors of possible significance in conditioning the compensatory nystagmus are: 1) otolith and proprioceptor sensory influx prior to and during discordant canal input: 2) a consistent sensory influx for each stimulus-producing movement: 3) intention in stimulus-producing movements: 4) visual inhibition. Contributions of compensatory and arousal factors to vestibular suppression are considered in relation to practical problems of transfer of habituation from one acceleration environment to another. The effect of acupuncture on the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis--an open randomised controlled study

Abstract:Background: Using an open randomised controlled study, we examined the effectiveness of manual and electroacupuncture on symptom relief for patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Methods: Patients with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee were randomised to one of three treatment groups. Group A had acupuncture alone, group B had acupuncture but continued on their symptomatic medication, and group C used their symptomatic medication for the first five weeks and then had a course of acupuncture added. Patients receiving acupuncture were treated twice weekly over five weeks. Needles were inserted (with manual and electrical stimulation) in acupuncture points for pain and stiffness, selected according to traditional acupuncture theory for treating Bi syndrome. Patients were assessed by a blinded observer before treatment, after five weeks' treatment and at one month follow up, using a visual analogue pain scale (VAS) and the Western Ontario McMaster (WOMAC) questionnaire for osteoarthritis of the knee. Results: The 30 patients in our study were well matched for age, body mass index, disease duration, baseline VAS pain score and baseline WOMAC scores. Repeated measure analyses gave a highly significant improvement in pain (VAS) after the courses of acupuncture in groups A (P = 0.012) and B (P=0.001); there was no change in group C until after the course of acupuncture, when the improvement was significant (P = 0.001). Similarly significant changes were seen with the WOMAC pain and stiffness scores. These benefits were maintained during the one month after the course of acupuncture. Patients' rating of global assessment was higher than that of the acupuncturist. Conclusion: We conclude that manual and electroacupuncture causes a significant improvement in the symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee, either on its own or as an adjunct therapy, with no loss of benefit after one month.
Patterns of Traditional Chinese Medicine Diagnosis in Thermal Laser Acupuncture Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis

Abstract:Knee osteoarthritis (OA) manifests with pain, joint stiffness, and limited function. In traditional Chinese medicine, knee OA is differentiated into three patterns: yang deficiency and cold coagulation, kidney deficiency, and blood stasis. The objective of this study was to determine whether yang deficiency cold coagulation patients respond better to thermal laser acupuncture treatment than do non- yang deficient patients. Fifty-two patients with OA were allocated to group A ( yang deficient, n = 26 ) or B (non- yang deficient, n = 26 ). All patients received a 20-min thermal laser acupuncture treatment at acupoint Dubi (ST 35) three times a week for two weeks and twice a week for another four weeks. Outcome assessments were performed immediately after the first treatment, and at weeks 2, 6, and 10. Group A function scores were significantly better than those of Group B at weeks 2 ( P = 0.049 ), 6 ( P = 0.046 ), and 10 ( P = 0.042 ), but no significant differences were found between the two groups in pain and stiffness scores at any time point. No significant adverse effect was observed. The combined 10.6 μ m–650 nm laser treatment might be most beneficial to yang deficiency cold coagulation knee OA patients, particularly in improving function.
