Abstract:Generation 5 ethylenediamine (EDA)‐cored poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers (E5, E denotes the EDA core and 5 the generation number) with different degrees of acetylation and carboxylation were synthesized and used as a model system to investigate the effect of charge and the influence of dendrimer surface modifications on electrophoretic mobility (EM) and molecular distribution. The surface‐modified dendrimers were characterized by size‐exclusion chromatography, 1H NMR, MALDI‐TOF‐MS, PAGE, and CE. The focus of our study was to determine how EM changes as a function of particle charge and molecular mass, and how the molecular distribution changes due to surface modifications. We demonstrate that partially modified dendrimers have much broader migration peaks than those of fully surface functionalized or unmodified E5 dendrimers due to variations in the substitution of individual dendrimer surfaces. EM decreased nonlinearly with increases in surface acetylation for both PAMAM acetamides and PAMAM succinamic acids, indicating a complex migration activity in CE separations that is not solely due to charge/mass ratio changes. These studies provide new insights into dendrimer properties under an electric field, as well as into the characterization of dendrimer‐based materials being developed for medical applications.
Pulse energy scaling to 5 microJ from a femtosecond thin disk laser

Abstract:We report an increase in pulse energy to 5.1 microJ obtained directly from a femtosecond diode-pumped Yb:YAG thin disk laser without external amplification. Stable passive mode locking was obtained with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The laser delivers 63 W of average output power in a nearly diffraction-limited beam (M2=1.1) at a center wavelength of 1030 nm. The pulse repetition rate is 12.3 MHz, and the pulses have a duration of 800 fs, which results in a peak power of 5.6 MW. The laser was operated in a box flooded with helium because the nonlinearity of air was found to be a limiting factor for the stability of the pulse formation at increasing pulse energies.
High-energy picosecond pulses with a single spatial mode from a passively mode-locked, broad-area semiconductor laser

Abstract:We present a mode-locked semiconductor laser oscillator that emits few picosecond pulses (5-8ps at 379MHz repetition) with record peak power (112W) and pulse energy (0.5nJ) directly out of the oscillator (with no amplifier). To achieve this high power performance we employ a high-current broad-area, spatially multi-mode diode amplifier (0.3x5mm), placed in an external cavity that enforces oscillation in a single spatial mode. Consequently, the brightness of the beam is near-ideal ($M^2 = 1.3$). Mode locking is achieved by dividing the large diode chip (edge emitter) into two sections with independent electrical control: one large section for gain and another small section for a saturable absorber. Precise tuning of the reverse voltage on the absorber section allows to tune the saturation level and recovery time of the absorber, which provides a convenient control knob to optimize the mode-locking performance for various cavity conditions.

[The image of psychotherapies - a comparison between prospective therapists and laypersons].

Abstract:OBJECTIVES Considering the specific situation of psychotherapy in Austria with its wide range of different therapeutic methods which are accredited by law, we investigated their respective level of familiarity and the connotative associations of future therapists and of a sample group of the lay public regarding the different schools. METHODS 175 persons (students of economics, students at the university clinic for psychoanalysis, and prospective psychotherapists) were interviewed concerning terms of familiarity and popularity of the therapeutic methods. Using the semantic differential we tried to operationalize the resonant connotative associations. RESULTS There is insufficient information with regards to the existence of the various different schools on the side of the lay public. The connotations of the different groups are similar: independent of the level of familiarity, 4 different types of therapy can cluster-analytically be identified in relation to the 3 factors of the polarity profile (activity-potency-valence). CONCLUSIONS More extensive information of the public concerning the different therapeutic possibilities is needed. Further the importance of considering subjective connotations in situations of referral and indication is discussed. Specific attention has been given to the situation of prospective psychotherapists.

Abstract:Mode-locked lasers emitting ultrashort pulses in the 2-m spectral range at high (100-MHz) repetition rates offer unique opportunities for time-resolved molecular spectroscopy and are interesting as pump/seed sources for parametric frequency down-conversion and as seeders of ultrafast regenerative laser amplifiers. Passively mode-locked lasers based on Tm3+- and Ho3+-doped bulk solid-state materials have been under development for about a decade. In 2009 we demonstrated the first steady-state operation of such a Tm:KLu(WO4)2 laser using a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) saturable absorber (SA), generating 10-ps pulses at 1.95 m. In 2012 this laser produced 141-fs pulses at 2.037 m. More recently, the study of numerous active media with different SAs resulted in the generation of sub-100-fs (sub-10-optical-cycle) pulses. Materials with broad and smooth spectral gain profile were selected, naturally emitting above 2 m to avoid water vapor absorption/dispersion effects, including anisotropic materials, strong crystal-field distortion in hosts that do not contain rare-earths, crystals with structural or compositional (i.e. mixed compounds) disorder that exhibit inhomogeneous line broadening, mixed laser ceramics, and Tm,Ho-codoping of ordered and disordered crystals and ceramics. A broad absorption band in semiconducting SWCNTs spans from 1.6 to 2.1-m whereas the absorption of graphene extends into the mid-IR and scales for multilayers, increasing the modulation depth. Compared to GaSb-based semiconductor SA mirrors (SESAMs), the carbon nanostructures exhibit broader spectral response and can be fabricated by simpler and inexpensive techniques. Chirped mirrors were implemented for groupvelocity dispersion compensation, to generate the shortest pulses, down to 52 fs at 2.015 m.

Abstract:A semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) based passively Q-switched microchip Nd:YVO4 seed laser with pulse duration of 90ps at repetition rate of 100kHz is amplified by single-passing a Nd:YVO4 bounce amplifier with varying seed input power from 20µW to 10mW. The liquid pure metal greasy thermally conductive material is used to replace the traditional thin indium foil as the thermal contact material for better heat load transfer of the Nd:YVO4 bounce amplifier. Temperature distribution at the pump surface is measured by an infrared imager to compare with the numerically simulated results. A highest single-passing output power of 11.3W is obtained for 10mW averaged seed power, achieving a pulse peak power of ~1.25MW and pulse energy of ~113µJ. The beam quality is well preserved with M2 ≤1.25. The simple configuration of this bounce laser amplifier made the system flexible, robust and cost-effective, showing attractive potential for further applications.

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) mode-locked Yb:LuYAG laser. Pumped by a 976 nm single-mode fiber laser, a self-starting mode-locked Yb:LuYAG laser was demonstrated, delivering a 618-mW output power with 140-fs pulses and a 95.4-MHz repetition rate. The output spectrum is centered at 1053 nm with a spectral width of 10.4 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse ever generated from a mode-locked Yb:LuYAG laser.

Abstract:We report on sub-50 fs pulse generation from a passively mode-locked Yb:SrF2 laser pumped with a spatially single-mode, fiber-coupled laser diode at 976 nm. In the continuous-wave regime, the Yb:SrF2 laser generated a maximum output power of 704 mW at 1048 nm with a threshold of 64 mW and a slope efficiency of 77.2%. A continuous wavelength tuning across 89 nm (1006 - 1095 nm) was achieved with a Lyot filter. By implementing a SEmiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror (SESAM) for initiating and sustaining the mode-locked operation, soliton pulses as short as 49 fs were generated at 1057 nm with an average output power of 117 mW at a pulse repetition rate of ∼75.9 MHz. The maximum average output power of the mode-locked Yb:SrF2 laser was scaled up to 313 mW for slightly longer pulses of 70 fs at 1049.4 nm, corresponding to a peak power of 51.9 kW and an optical efficiency of 34.7%.

Abstract:We present a compact extreme ultraviolet (XUV) source based on high-harmonic generation (HHG) at 2.4 MHz pulse repetition rate driven from the compressed output of a mode-locked thin-disk laser (TDL) oscillator. The system generates very high peak intensities, which enable highly nonlinear frequency conversion reaching VUV/XUV energies. These sources significantly increase the signal-to-noise ratio and reduce measurement durations in many fields such as condensed matter physics. The pulse repetition rate is increased from kilohertz to megahertz with high average photon flux, while keeping the pulse energy sufficiently low to avoid space charge effects. The system uses a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror mode-locked Yb:YAG TDL delivering an average power of up to 70 W with subpicosecond pulses, which are efficiently compressed to sub-100 fs in a simple, single-stage compressor based on a Kagome-type hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. Focusing into a high-pressure xenon gas jet, we generate XUV radiation with up to >5×107 photons/s on the 19th harmonic (23 eV). This HHG system is very compact, has low-noise performance comparable to standard ultrafast low-power laser oscillators, and provides a new tool for the study of attosecond dynamics in condensed matter physics.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate the limits of pulse duration in a Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAG thin-disk laser (TDL) oscillator. Thanks to its excellent mechanical and optical properties, Yb:YAG is one of the most used gain materials for continuous-wave and pulsed TDLs. In mode-locked operation, its 8-nm wide gain bandwidth only directly supports pulses with a minimum duration of approximately 140 fs. For achieving shorter pulses, a Kerr-lens mode-locked TDL oscillator can be operated in the strongly self-phase modulation (SPM) broadened regime. Here, the spectral bandwidth of the oscillating pulse exceeds the available gain bandwidth by generating additional frequencies via SPM inside the Kerr medium. In this work, we study and compare different laser configurations in the strongly SPM-broadened regime. Starting with a configuration providing 84-fs pulses at 69 W average power at 17 MHz repetition rate, we reduce the pulse duration by optimizing various mode-locking parameters. One crucial parameter is the dispersion control which was provided by in-house-developed dispersive mirrors produced by ion-beam sputtering (IBS). We discuss trade-offs in average power, pulse duration, efficiency, and intra-cavity peak power. For the configuration operating at the highest SPM-broadening, we achieve a minimum pulse duration of 27 fs, which represents the shortest pulse duration directly generated by any ultrafast TDL oscillator. The corresponding full width at half maximum (FWHM) spectral bandwidth exceeds more than five times the FWHM gain bandwidth. The average output power of 3.3 W is moderate for ultrafast TDL oscillators, but higher than other Yb-based laser oscillators operating at this pulse duration. Additionally, the corresponding intra-cavity peak power of 0.8 GW is highly attractive for implementing intra-cavity extreme nonlinear optical interactions such as high harmonic generation.

Abstract:The generation of stable trains of ultra-short (fs-ps), terahertz (THz)-frequency radiation pulses, with large instantaneous intensities, is an underpinning requirement for the investigation of light-matter interactions, for metrology and for ultra-high-speed communications. In solid-state electrically-pumped lasers, the primary route for generating short pulses is through passive mode-locking. However, this has not yet been achieved in the THz range, defining one of the longest standing goals over the last two decades. In fact, the realization of passive mode-locking has long been assumed to be inherently hindered by the fast recovery times associated with the intersubband gain of THz lasers. Here, we demonstrate a self-starting miniaturized ultra-short pulse THz laser, exploiting an original device architecture that includes the surface patterning of multilayer-graphene saturable absorbers distributed along the entire cavity of a double-metal semiconductor 2.30-3.55 THz wire laser. Self-starting pulsed emission with 4.0-ps-long pulses in a compact, all-electronic, all-passive and inexpensive configuration is demonstrated.

Abstract:A high-energy single-frequency hundred-microsecond long-pulse solid-state laser is demonstrated, which features an electro-optically modulated seed laser and two-stage double-passed pulse-pumped solid-state laser rod amplifier. Laser output with energy of 180 mJ, repetition rate of 50 Hz, and pulse width of 150 μs is achieved. The laser linewidth is measured to be less than 25.52 kHz by a fiber delay self-heterodyne method. In addition, a closed-loop controlling system is adopted to lock the center wavelength. No relaxation oscillation spikes appear in the pulse temporal profile, which is beneficial for further amplification.

Abstract:Here, we propose a high power dissipative soliton (DS) laser with a central wavelength of -1612 nm. The whole laser system includes the mode-locking oscillator and the corresponding master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA). The mode-locking oscillator is a nonlinear amplifier loop mirror (NALM) cavity, which has a net normal dispersion enabling the generation of nJ-level DS pulses. To further enhance the output power of the 1.6 mu m DS pulses, the specially-designed MOPA system consisting of multiple-stage single-pass amplifier is constructed, which can amplify the output power to watt level and meanwhile keeps a high suppression ratio to C-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). This high power 1.6 mu m DS laser will have further applications in biomedical research and material processing. In the amplifier, we observe the automatic evolution of the DS pulses into the noise-like (NL) pulses under high pumping strength. At the maximum pump power, the MOPA system delivers the NL pulses with an output power of over 2 W. The narrowest spike duration is -70 fs (fs). This 1.6 mu m fs-scale NL laser is a good pump source for generating the mid-infrared supercontinuum without short wavelength region loss. To demonstrate the superiority of this NL laser, a broad supercontinuum from -0.87 mu m to -3.75 mu m waveband is achieved with a piece of highly germanium-doped (Ge-doped) fiber.

Abstract:We present an ultrafast fiber laser system delivering 4.6 W average power at 258 nm based on two-stage fourth-harmonic generation in beta barium borate (BBO). The beam quality is close to diffraction limited with an M2- value of 1.3 x 1.6. The pulse duration is 150 fs, which potentially is compressible down to 40 fs. A plain BBO and a Sapphire-BBO compound are compared with respect to the achievable beam quality in the conversion process. This laser is applicable in scientific and industrial fields. Further scaling to higher average power is discussed

Abstract:We demonstrate femtosecond performance of an ultra-broadband high-index-contrast saturable Bragg reflector consisting of a silicon/silicon-dioxide/germanium structure that is fully compatible with CMOS processing. This device offers a reflectivity bandwidth of over 700 nm and sub-picosecond recovery time of the saturable loss. It is used to achieve mode-locking of an Er-Yb:glass laser centered at 1540 nm, generating 220 fs pulses, with the broadest output spectrum to date.

Abstract:We report femtosecond pulse generation at GHz repetition rates with the Yb:YLF gain medium for the first time. A simple, low-cost, and compact architecture is implemented for the potential usage of the system as a low-noise timing jitter source. The system is pumped by 250 mW, 960 nm single-mode diodes from both sides. The semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) mode-locked laser is self-starting and generates transform-limited 210 fs long pulses near 1050 nm. The laser's average output power is 40 mW, corresponding to a pulse energy of 36 pJ at 1.1 GHz repetition rate. The measured laser relative intensity noise (RIN) from 1 Hz to 1 MHz is 0.42%. The performance obtained in this initial work is limited by the specifications of the available optics and could be improved significantly by employing custom-designed optical elements.

Abstract:One of the main interests of ultrashort pulses at 2 μm will be in medical surgery, lithotripsy, and dentistry. Currently, most reports of ultrashort pulses in this wavelength range are generally of low power, giving outputs in the region of a few tens of milliwatts, which may not be suitable for practical applications. Therefore, it is interesting to generate high-power ultrashort pulses in the region of a few watts. Generally, mode-locked pulses are produced in the solitonic form, capitalizing the anomalous dispersion regime. Soliton pulse has its limitation, as the output pulses are limited to low power due to the pulse breaking effect. In contrast, a stretched pulse is free of this limitation. This work aims to generate ultrashort pulses with a high peak power utilizing the stretched pulse regime, with a net cavity dispersion of 0.03 ps 2 . The system has a master oscillator, a preamplifier, and a main amplifier. The oscillator was mode-locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) to generate stretched mode-locked pulses, giving a repetition rate of 13.02 MHz at a center wavelength of 1970.1 nm. The average output power and the pulse duration after the main amplifier were 3.14 W and 81 fs, respectively. The pulse energy and the peak power were then calculated as 241 nJ and 3 MW.

Abstract:Abstract We demonstrate an efficient ultrafast source with 195 fs pulse duration, 54 W average power at 200 kHz repetition rate and near diffraction-limited beam quality. The compact setup incorporates a thin-disk Yb:YAG regenerative amplifier (RA) and a subsequent nonlinear pulse compression stage with periodic-layered Kerr media (PLKM), which is one of the multiple-thin-solid-plate schemes based on nonlinear resonator theory. In virtue of the formation of quasi-stationary spatial soliton in PLKM, the near diffraction-limited beam quality of the RA remained almost undisturbed after post-compression. The nonlinear pulse compression module is simple and efficient with a transmission of 96%. To the best our knowledge, for pulse energy over 200 μJ, this is the highest output power reported for the multiple-thin-solid-plate scheme. This source manifests an economical combination to mitigate the bandwidth limitations of Yb-based high-power chirped pulse amplifiers.
