Abstract:Unprecedented levels of nitrogen (N) have entered terrestrial ecosystems over the past century, which substantially influences the carbon (C) exchange between the atmosphere and biosphere. Temperature and moisture are generally regarded as the major controllers over the N effects on ecosystem C uptake and release. N-phosphorous (P) stoichiometry regulates the growth and metabolisms of plants and soil organisms, thereby affecting many ecosystem C processes. However, it remains unclear how the N-induced shift in the plant N:P ratio affects ecosystem production and C fluxes and its relative importance. We conducted a field manipulative experiment with eight N addition levels in a Tibetan alpine steppe and assessed the influences of N on aboveground net primary production (ANPP), gross ecosystem productivity (GEP), ecosystem respiration (ER), and net ecosystem exchange (NEE); we used linear mixed-effects models to further determine the relative contributions of various factors to the N-induced changes in these parameters. Our results showed that the ANPP, GEP, ER, and NEE all exhibited nonlinear responses to increasing N additions. Further analysis demonstrated that the plant N:P ratio played a dominate role in shaping these C exchange processes. There was a positive relationship between the N-induced changes in ANPP (ΔANPP) and the plant N:P ratio (ΔN:P), whereas the ΔGEP, ΔER, and ΔNEE exhibited quadratic correlations with the ΔN:P. In contrast, soil temperature and moisture were only secondary predictors for the changes in ecosystem production and C fluxes along the N addition gradient. These findings highlight the importance of plant N:P ratio in regulating ecosystem C exchange, which is crucial for improving our understanding of C cycles under the scenarios of global N enrichment.

Abstract:The root system of permanent grasslands is of outstanding importance for resource acquisition. Particularly under semi-arid conditions, the acquisition of water and nutrients is highly variable during the vegetation growth period and between years. Additionally, grazing is repeatedly disturbing the functional equilibrium between the root system and the transpiring leaf canopy. However, very few data is available considering grazing effects on belowground net primary productivity (BNPP) and root-shoot dry mass allocation in natural grassland systems. We hypothesise that grazing significantly reduces BNPP due to carbon reallocation to shoot growth. Root biomass and BNPP were estimated by soil coring in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and from ingrowth cores in 2005 and 2006 at one site which has been protected from grazing since 1979 (UG79), at one winter grazing (WG), and one heavily grazed (HG) site. BNPP was estimated from the summation of significant increments of total and live root biomass and from accumulated root biomass of ingrowth cores. Belowground biomass varied from 1,490–2,670 g m−2 and was significantly lower under heavy grazing than at site UG79. Root turnover varied from 0.23 to 0.33 year−1 and was not significantly different between sites. Heavy grazing significantly decreased live root biomass and BNPP compared to site UG79. Taking BNPP estimates from live root biomass dynamics and ingrowth cores as the most reliable values, the portion of dry mass allocated belowground relative to total net primary productivity (BNPP/NPP) varied between 0.50–0.66 and was reduced under heavy grazing in 2005, but not in 2006. The positive correlation between cumulative root length density of ingrowth cores and leaf dry matter suggests that the ingrowth core method is suitable for studying BNPP in this semi-arid steppe system. Grazing effects on BNPP and BNPP/NPP should be considered in regional carbon models and estimates of belowground nutrient cycling.

The Growth and N Retention of Two Annual Desert Plants Varied Under Different Nitrogen Deposition Rates

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) partitioning between plant and soil pools is closely related to biomass accumulation and allocation, and is of great importance for quantifying the biomass dynamics and N fluxes of ecosystems, especially in low N-availability desert ecosystems. However, partitioning can differ among species even when growing in the same habitat. To better understand the variation of plant biomass allocation and N retention within ephemeral and annual species we studied the responses of Malcolmia Africana (an ephemeral) and Salsola affinis (an annual) to N addition, including plant growth, N retention by the plant and soil, and N lost to the environment using 15N (double-labeled 15NH4 15NO3 (5.16% abundance) added at 0, 0.8, 1.6, 3.2, and 6.4 g pot-1, equivalent to 0, 15, 30, 60, and 120 kg N ha-1) in a pot experiment. Higher N addition (N120) inhibited plant growth and biomass accumulation of the ephemeral but not the annual. In addition, the aboveground:belowground partitioning of N (the R:S ratio) of the ephemeral decreased with increasing N addition, but that of the annual increased. The N input corresponding to maximum biomass and 15N retention of the ephemeral was significantly less than that of the annual. The aboveground and belowground retention of N in the ephemeral were significantly less than those of the annual, except at low N rates. The average plant-soil system recovery of added 15N by the ephemeral was 70%, significantly higher than that of the annual with an average of 50%. Although the whole plant-soil 15N recovery of this desert ecosystem decreased with increasing N deposition, our results suggested that it may vary with species composition and community change under future climate and elevated N deposition.
Life history responses of spring-and autumn-germinated ephemeral plants to increased nitrogen and precipitation in the Gurbantunggut Desert

Abstract:Nitrogen deposition and precipitation change are not only hot topics of current global change but also the main environmental factors affecting plant growth. Thus, the effects of nitrogen and precipitation on the life history of spring-(SG) and autumn-germinated (AG) ephemeral plants of Erodium oxyrhynchum were researched in the Gurbantunggut Desert, northern China, and the aim was to understand the response of plants from different germination seasons to global change. SG and AG plants with increased nitrogen and precipitation plus nitrogen treatments were measured to determine seedling survival, phenology, plant traits, biomass accumulation and allocation and dormancy characteristics of offspring (seeds). The results showed that increased nitrogen and precipitation plus nitrogen treatments significantly improved the survival of SG and AG plants during the seedling stage, and precipitation plus nitrogen treatments also improved the growth and seed production of SG and AG plants, but increased nitrogen significantly inhibited their growth and seed production. Therefore, precipitation plays an important role in regulating nitrogen uptake by plants in arid and semiarid ecosystems. With increased nitrogen, SG and AG plants allocated more biomass into root and reproductive organs but allocated significantly less biomass into the leaf, with almost no change in biomass allocation to the stem. With nitrogen plus precipitation treatments, biomass allocation in all organs of SG and AG plants showed almost no change. Clearly, changes in soil moisture also affected biomass allocation of SG and AG plants. For offspring dormancy, SG and AG plants produced more nondormancy seeds with increased nitrogen but produced more dormancy seeds under precipitation plus nitrogen treatments. Hence, in a harsh environment, SG and AG plants produced more nondormancy offspring with low reproduction in order to occupy the habitat rapidly in the following year or produced more dormancy offspring with high reproduction in a suitable environment intended for spreading germination risk in time and conserve the population.
Differential seasonal effects of ephemeral legumes in response to moisture-nitrogen coupling in the deserts of northwestern China

Abstract:Desert ecosystems are ecosystems limited by both nitrogen and moisture, while legumes, as an important source of nitrogen in desert ecosystems, are extremely sensitive to respond to moisture and nitrogen changes. In order to reveal the growth and physiological metabolic processes of desert legumes in response to moisture and nitrogen changes. In this study, two dominant ephemeral legumes, C. A. Mey. and Kar. & Kir. were selected from the Gurbantunggut Desert through a controlled experiment in greenhouse pots: four moisture treatment levels were established: W1(soil moisture content of 5 %), W2(soil moisture content of 7 %), W3( 9 % soil moisture content), W4(11 % soil moisture content) and three N treatment levels: N1(0 mmol/L NH NO ), N2(18 mmol/L NH NO ), N3(72 mmol/L NH NO ), and we conducted a N tracking experiment for the pot treatments throughout the growing season. The results showed that: (1) moisture and nitrogen treatments had similar patterns on above-ground and below-ground as well as total fresh weight, plant height and basal diameter, Chla, Chlb and Chla+b of the two legumes, all of which were greatest in the W3N3 treatment and smallest in the W4N1 treatment, but the growth characteristics and chlorophyll parameters had cumulative differences over the growing season. (2) When subjected to severe moisture and nitrogen stresses, the 2 plants would increase the physiological levels of stress tolerance in vivo to enhance cellular resistance, with the osmoregulatory substance content being the most sensitive in response to moisture, and the cell membrane and antioxidant enzyme systems being the most sensitive in response to nitrogen stress. (3) The adaptive characteristics of physiological metabolic processes in plants to seasonal changes, in which growth characteristics, cell membrane and antioxidant enzyme content accumulation showed: rapid growth period < maximum biomass period, while chlorophyll content and osmoregulatory substance content accumulation content accumulation showed: rapid growth period > maximum biomass period. In general, drought can hinder nitrogen uptake and transport, while sufficient moisture can accelerate the nutrient metabolism process of plants, and there is a nutrient dilution effect once the moisture is in excess, but in the nitrogen starvation state, the moisture factor has almost no effect on plants, therefore, the moisture-nitrogen coupling effect is more reflective of the physiological response characteristics of the plants when they encountered the adversity stress, and the degree of accumulation is different in different growing seasons, and the plants in the The differences in different growing seasons reflect the changes in photosynthetic intensity and energy demand.

Abstract:Ephemeral plants are a major component of biodiversity in the deserts of Northwest China, with important ecological functions. Information on plant morphological characteristics and biomass accumulation and allocation during different growth stages could enhance our understanding of the functional features and survival strategy of ephemeral plants. We examined the effects of increased precipitation on ephemeral species Eremopyrum distans and Nepeta micrantha in the Gurbantunggut Desert. Changes in morphological characteristics and biomass accumulation and allocation were analyzed under increasing precipitation 30% and 50% treatments. The results showed that increased precipitation 30% and 50% treatments promoted the growth of E. distans, with leaf area and reproductive organ biomass being increased by 14.2%-188.5% and 55.9%, respectively. The effects of increased precipitation on the growth of N. micrantha varied across different growth stages. At leaf expansion stage, increased precipitation promoted growth of N. micrantha, while at fruit ripening stage, increased precipitation 50% treatment reduced leaf area, plant height, and reproduction biomass by 54.9%, 20.5%, 43.2%, respectively. Thus, the responses of the two species to increased precipitation was species-specific. Increased precipitation would change the survival strategies of the two species, with consequence on the species composition and structure of desert community.
Effects of nitrogen addition on the root morphology and biomass characteristics of ephemeral plants in a cold desert

Abstract:Increased nitrogen deposition has a huge influence on terrestrial ecosystems. Desert ecosystems are more fragile than other ecosystems and are more sensitive to global change such as nitrogen deposition. In this study, three desert ephemeral species (Plantago minuta, Nepeta micrantha, and Eremopyrum distans) were used as the research subjects. Five nitrogen addition treatments were utilized to study the effects of aboveground and belowground biomass and root traits. The results showed that (1) 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 g·(m2·a)−1 concentrations of nitrogen had a significant effect on the root characteristics of the three ephemeral plants (P < 0.05). (2) Nitrogen addition of 1.5, 3, and 6 g·(m2·a)−1 concentrations significantly increased the aboveground and belowground biomass accumulation of the three desert ephemeral plants (P < 0.05); however, the 12 g·(m2·a)−1 treatment inhibited the biomass accumulation of P. minuta and N. micrantha, whereas it had no significant inhibitory effect on E. distans (P > 0.05). (3) The aboveground and belowground biomass characteristics of the three ephemeral species were correlated with plant root morphological characteristics. The root characteristics of various diameters were different from the aboveground and belowground biomass correlations, and there were also large distinctions between the different species. Therefore, the continuous increase of nitrogen deposition in desert areas might cause changes in the survival strategies and community structure of ephemeral species, and further affect the synusia structure of ephemeral plants.

Abstract:Precipitation change and nitrogen deposition are not only hot topics of current global change but also the main environmental factors affecting plant growth in desert ecosystems. Thus, we performed an experiment of increased precipitation, nitrogen, and precipitation plus nitrogen on the ephemeral annual species Nepeta micrantha and Eremopyrum distans in the Gurbantunggut Desert. We aimed to determine the life history responses of N. micrantha and E. distans to environment changes, and the germination percentage of the offspring (seeds) was also tested in the laboratory. The results showed that increased nitrogen and precipitation plus nitrogen increased the growth of both plant species, whereas increased precipitation inhibited the growth of N. micrantha but increased the growth of E. distans . This differential response of these two species to precipitation and nitrogen also affected the germination of their offspring. In response to increased nitrogen and precipitation plus nitrogen, the germination percentage of the offspring produced by two species decreased in conjunction with the plants exhibiting high reproduction, which may prevent overcrowding during the following year; however, the N. micrantha plants produced more nondormant offspring in conjunction with low reproduction under relatively greater amounts of precipitation, and N. micrantha offspring could occupy their habitat via rapid germination in suitable environments. Therefore, with increased precipitation and nitrogen deposition, these differences in offspring dormancy may affect their ecological niche in the community.

Abstract:Aims Symbiotic plants achieve partitioning of shared resources by chemical nutrient niche separation to escape competition. Understanding whether the nitrogen(N) nutrient acquisition strategies of ephemeral plants are influenced by temperature and moisture can facilitate the elucidation of plant coexistence strategies in desert ecosystems under environmental change. This study aimed to see whether changes in temperature and moisture affected the preferential uptake of different N chemotypes by ephemerals. Methods In this study, four dominant ephemerals in the Gurbantunggut Desert, Eremopyrum orientale , Erodium oxyrhinchum , Centaurea pulchella , and Lappula patula , were selected for controlled experiments in indoor pots. We conducted a short-term 15 N follow-up experiment on potted treatments by setting two temperature gradients (low temperature(T1): 15 °C during the day and 5 °C at night; high temperature(T2): 25 °C during the day and 15 °C at night) and three moisture gradients (drought treatment(W1): soil moisture content of 2%; normal moisture treatment(W2): soil moisture content of 8%; wet treatment(W3): soil moisture content of 14%). Results Four ephemerals preferentially absorbed 15 N-NH 4 at low temperature treatment (T1), with a contribution ranging from 17.33% to 55.11%. The greatest uptake rate of 15 N-NH 4 was at the low temperature-normal moisture treatment (T1W2), and the fastest N uptake rate among the four plants could reach 13.84 μg·h –1 , while at the high temperature-drought treatment (T2W1), the uptake was the smallest. However, plants showed the greatest preference for 15 N-NO 3 uptake at the high temperature treatment, with contributions ranging from 16.09% to 54.06%. The uptake rate of 15 N-NO 3 was greatest at the high temperature-wet treatment (T2W3), where the fastest N uptake rate among the four plants could reach 12.48 μg·h –1 , and the smallest rate of 15 N-NO 3 at the low temperature-drought treatment (T1W1). The four ephemerals could also absorb organic N, 15 N-Glycine, especially at the low temperatures. Conclusions The results showed that the four plants exhibited "Plasticity" in the uptake of the three N forms under different hydrothermal conditions. The effect of temperature and moisture interaction is more reflective of the N acquisition pattern of ephemeral plants in the desert. In low temperature environments, the uptake preference of ephemerals for N forms was mainly regulated by water, while in high temperature environments, the uptake of N forms by ephemerals was mainly regulated by temperature.

Trait–Abundance Relationships of Annual Ephemerals in Response to Nitrogen Addition in Gurbantunggut Desert

Abstract:Understanding the effect of nitrogen addition on species trait–abundance relationships is one of the central focuses of community ecology and can offer us insights into the mechanisms of community assembly under atmospheric nitrogen deposition. However, few studies have focused on desert ecosystems. In this study, we measured the abundance and ecological stoichiometric traits, leaf carbon content (LCC), nitrogen content (LNC), and phosphorus content (LPC) for all annual ephemerals in all plots subjected to nitrogen addition in early spring in Gurbantunggut Desert, northern Xinjiang, China. We found a significant relationship between traits (LNC, N:P, and C:N) and abundance, indicating that ecological stoichiometry is a good proxy for explaining and predicting species abundance. We further found that significant trait–abundance relationships still existed under different nitrogen addition levels. The result suggests that trait-based niche-assembly theory plays an important role in determining species abundance under atmospheric nitrogen deposition.
Role of Desert Annuals in Nutrient Flow in Arid Area of Northwestern China: a Nutrient Reservoir and Provider

Abstract:Previous studies have tested the “vernal dam” hypothesis of spring ephemeral herbs in hardwood forests. The desert annual is a component of the desert ecosystem that takes advantage of water resources and temperature conditions during the rainy season to rapidly complete its life cycle within several months. To understand the role desert annual/ephemeral plants play in nutrient flow, we studied vegetation cover, nitrogen content and litter production of annual plants and litter decomposition rate in plant communities dominated by four shrubs (Haloxlon ammodendron, Hedysarum scoparium, Calligonum mongolicum, and Nitraria tangutorum) and two dominant annuals (Agriophyllum squarrosum and Halogeton arachnoideus Moq) in Minqin, northwestern China. Results indicate that over half of the total vegetation cover was provided by annuals. Annuals also took up a large amount of nitrogen (0.46–3.78 g N m−2) along the oasis–desert ecotone. Litter production and nutrient content were higher in areas dominated by annual plants than in areas dominated by shrubs. Furthermore, the litter decomposition rate of the annuals was higher than that of the shrubs, except for the shrub H. ammodendron, although almost all of the litter’s carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) remained after 6 months of decomposition. Without the annuals, more nutrients and rainwater might be lost through leaching or dust transfer caused by the wind erosion. In addition, green twigs of the annuals are the food for some animals, we found some green twigs and litter from annuals left in front of gerbil and rabbit burrows, sometimes even blocking these burrows. Thus, desert summer annuals, like nutrient reservoirs and providers, take up nutrients during the rainy season, providing some animals and microbes with food, and finally release these nutrients after death.
Effect of nitrogen deposition on seed germination of ephemeral species in the cold desert

Abstract:Seed germination is the key initial stage in the plant life cycle and strongly regulated by the external environment. Nitrogen deposition is an important environmental change factor that is increasing and affecting the structure and function of many ecosystems. This research aimed to investigate the effect of nitrogen deposition on the seed germination of nine ephemeral plants, including seed germination percentage, germination index and seed viability under four levels of nitrogen deposition. The germination percentage of the studied species differed significantly in response to nitrogen deposition, but nitrogen deposition has almost no significant effect on germination index. This study can provide information on the germination strategy of ephemeral plants in response to increasing nitrogen deposition in future, and the results can guide ecological conservation in arid areas.

Abstract:Plant C, N and P can reflect plant strategies of nutrient utilization and allocation. Precipitation is a key factor affecting plant nutrient uptake and utilization strategies especially in arid and semiarid regions, and it is predicted to increase in the cold deserts of Northwest China due to climate change. However, the balance of C, N and P stoichiometry in annual plants at different growth stages in response to increased precipitation is not known. Thus, we performed an experiment on the annual grass Eremopyrum distans in the Gurbantunggut Desert to determine the effect of increased precipitation on C, N and P utilization and allocation at different growth stages. In the control, organ C concentration was relatively stable during the life cycle, but leaf and root N and P concentration increased during the vegetative stage; culm N concentration decreased and P concentration increased and then decreased with plant growth. Increased precipitation significantly increased the leaf N and P concentration and decreased the C:N and C:P ratios at the vegetative growth stage, but leaf N:P was lower than 14 during the whole growth stage. Increased precipitation could improve the leaf N and P resorption efficiency to cope with the reproduction allocation, and the root nutrients are more sensitive to increased precipitation. These results indicate that increased precipitation could improve the nutrient absorption and utilization for vegetative and reproductive growth of E. distans, and the root system plays crucially important role to influence the stoichiometry under varied environment.

Abstract:In the present study, biomass allocation and phylogenetic relationship affect the root system architecture and its variation patterns were investigated in annual ephemerals. Although we found that biomass allocation indicators and trait variation can reflect the adaptive strategies of annual ephemerals, the impact of phylogenetic relationships is equally important. The variation of plant traits is closely related to the trade‐offs between resource acquisition and conservation, as well as the accumulation of biomass. However, there has been a lack of comprehensive insights into the variation patterns, phylogenetic conservatism, and covariation with biomass allocation of root system architecture in desert areas. We examined the root systems of 47 annual ephemeral species and evaluated their biomass allocation and six key root system architecture traits. Our results indicated that the variation in root traits mainly originated from interspecific variation (48.78%–99.76%), but intraspecific variation should not be ignored as to why the contribution rate of root tissue density (RTD) reached 51.22%. The six root traits were mainly loaded on the first and second axes of the principal component analysis (PCA), these traits mainly vary along two dimensions. The highest interspecific variation is in RTD (51.63%) and the lowest in topological index (TI; 5.92%). The intraspecific variation value and range of specific root length (SRL), specific root area (SRA), and RTD were significantly higher than TI (p .05). Effects of Additional N on Herbaceous Species of Desertified Steppe in Arid Regions of China: A Four-Year Field Study

Abstract:Human-induced nitrogen (N) enrichment is impacting the structure and function of grassland ecosystems, although few studies have been conducted in arid and semi-arid ecosystems under field conditions. Here, a 4-year multi-level N addition experiment under ambient precipitation in a typical temperate desert steppe in arid regions of China was designed to evaluate the impact of N enrichment on the herbaceous vegetation community in desert ecosystems. The results showed that species richness declined in response to N addition during all 4 years, while aboveground biomass increased in the relatively wet year (2007) and decreased in the relatively dry years (2008–2010) according to N addition level, as compared to the control. Plant community composition differed among plant functional groups (PFGs) based on added N. Perennial grasses (PG) benefited more compared with annuals and perennial forbs (PF) from N enrichment in terms of biomass production under conditions of high precipitation in 2007. In relatively dry years, biomass production of all PFGs was strictly dependent on inter- and intra-annual precipitation, which led PG to dominate in 2008 (with a dry spring) and PF to dominate in 2009 and 2010. Our results demonstrate that the impact of N enrichment on the herbaceous vegetation community in desert steppes may be strongly dependent on natural precipitation patterns characterized by shifts in plant community composition, particularly in terms of biomass production.

Abstract:Changes in spring and autumn phenology and thus growing season length (GSL) pose great challenges in accurately predicting terrestrial primary productivity. However, how spring and autumn phenology in response to land-use change and nitrogen deposition and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study was conducted to explore the GSL and its components [i.e., the beginning of growing season and ending of growing season (EGS)] in response to mowing and nitrogen addition in a temperate steppe on the Mongolia Plateau during 2 years with hydrologically contrasting condition [dry (2014) vs. wet (2015)]. Our results demonstrated that mowing advanced the BGS only by 3.83 days, while nitrogen addition advanced and delayed the BGS and EGS by 2.85 and 3.31 days, respectively, and thus prolonged the GSL by 6.16 days across the two growing seasons from 2014 to 2015. When analyzed by each year, nitrogen addition lengthened the GSL in the dry year (2014), whereas it shortened the GSL in the wet year (2015). Further analyses revealed that the contrasting impacts of nitrogen on the GSL were attributed to monthly precipitation regimes and plant growth rate indicated by the maximum of normalized difference vegetation index (NDV max ). Moreover, changes in the GSL and its two components had divergent impacts on community productivity. The findings highlight the critical role of precipitation regimes in regulating the responses of spring and autumn phenology to nutrient enrichment and suggest that the relationships of ecosystem productivity with spring and autumn phenology largely depend on interannual precipitation fluctuations under future increased nitrogen deposition scenarios.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) is an essential macronutrient for plant development and growth, and increased N deposition is affecting the diversity and productivity of plants. The objective of this study was to explore the growth response of Agropyron mongolicum Keng to N addition and to determine whether N-induced changes in soil-available nutrients have indirect impacts on the biomass of A. mongolicum via the regulation of root morphological traits and NUE. We conducted a pot experiment subjecting A. mongolicum to five N addition levels (0, 0.8, 1.6, 2.4, and 4.0 g N m−2 yr−1) under greenhouse conditions. N was provided through urea [CO(NH2)2] delivered with two equal applications and added at the seeding and tillering stages. The results showed that the total biomass response of A. mongolicum to increasing N addition appeared unimodal-shaped with an N saturation threshold at 3.20 g N m−2 yr−1. The total biomass was significantly and positively correlated with the root surface area (RSA), volume (RV), length (RL), forks number (RF), N-uptake efficiency (NUpE), and N-utilization efficiency (NUtE) (p < 0.05). N-induced changes in soil-available nutrients had an indirect impact on the total biomass of A. mongolicum via the regulation of root morphological traits and NUE.

Abstract:Elevated anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition could alter N status in temperate steppe. However, threshold observations of N status change from N limit to N saturation by far are not conclusive in these ecosystems. Research on the natural abundance of N-15 (N-15) could greatly help provide integrated information about ecosystem N status. The goal of this study was to investigate the suitability of measurements of N-15 of major ecosystem N pools and several key species, plant N-15 fractionation, together with key vegetation and soil indicators in response to N fertilization as a tool to identify the N status in a temperate steppe in Inner Mongolia. We carried out a N addition experiment during 201114 on a Stipa krylovii steppe in Inner Mongolia, Northern China. We investigated the response of several key N transformation processes, vegetation and soil properties to N addition. Aboveground biomass and belowground biomass (BGB) N-15, root and foliar N-15 of three dominant species (Artemisia frigida, S. krylovii and Leymus chinensis), N-15 of soil total N and soil KCl-extractable NO3-N were determined. The responses of isotope fractionation during plant N uptake and reallocation to N addition were also determined. Our results suggest that the N addition rate of 5g N m(2) yr(1) could be regarded as threshold of early N saturation in this S. krylovii steppe as indicated by an increase in plant fractionation and a decrease in plant N-15. When N input rate is > 10 g N m(2) yr(1), increased N deposition can lead to an apparent reduction in species richness and BGB as well as an increase in NO3 in extractable soil pools < 30-cm soil profile. With N addition, S. krylovii and A. frigida undergo earlier N status shift from N limitation toward N excess compared with L. chinensis, contributing to L. chinensis out-competing other species. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of N status change in temperate steppe based on isotope evidence and several other functional variables and contributes to predicting the responses of temperate steppe to future global N deposition scenario.
Patterns and Determinants of the Response of Plant Biomass to Addition of Nitrogen in Semi-Arid and Alpine Grasslands of China

Abstract:Although the effects of adding nitrogen (N) to grasslands have been studied worldwide, little is known about how those effects are, in turn, influenced by climate, soil, and vegetation. Data from such experiments conducted in two main types of grassland in China, alpine and semi-arid, which differed widely in terms of climate, soil, and vegetation, were compiled and analysed to examine the response of above-ground biomass to N. Adding N increased the above-ground biomass by 51% on average. Although the response of biomass showed no obvious trend with the dose of N in the alpine grasslands, the response in the semi-arid grassland peaked at 15-20 g m(-2) of N applied annually. Nitrogen addition efficiency in the alpine grasslands was higher than that in the semi-arid grasslands. The difference was mainly due to the differences in total soil N and its interactions with the above-ground biomass, which were particularly influenced by the soil's capacity to provide available N. These results suggest that soil N and features of local vegetation should be taken into account in arriving at the appropriate dose of N for a given site.
