Abstract:Abstract. Climate change has profound influences on plant community composition and ecosystem functions. However, its effects on plant community composition and net primary productivity are not well understood. A field experiment was conducted to examine the effects of warming, nitrogen (N) addition, and their interactions on plant community composition and productivity in a temperate meadow ecosystem in northeast China. Experimental warming significantly increased species richness, evenness and diversity, by contrast, N addition highly reduced species richness, evenness and diversity. Warming reduced the importance value of gramineous species but increased in forbs, N addition had the opposite effect. Warming had a significant positive effect on belowground productivity, but had a negative effect on aboveground biomass. The influences of warming on aboveground productivity were dependent on precipitation. Experimental warming had little effect on aboveground productivity in the years with higher precipitation, but significantly suppressed the growth of aboveground in dry years. Our results suggest that warming had indirect effects on plant productivity via altering water availability. Nitrogen addition significantly increased above- and belowground productivity, suggesting that N is one of the most important limiting factors which determine plant productivity in the studied meadow steppe. Significant interactive effects of warming plus N addition on belowground productivity were also detected. Our observations revealed that climate changes (warming and N deposition) plays significant roles in regulating plant community composition and productivity in temperate meadow steppe.
N enrichment, increased precipitation, and the effect of shrubs collectively shape the plant community in a desert ecosystem in northern China

Abstract:Understanding the responses of biological communities to global climate change is pivotal to accurately forecasting future dynamics and developing effective strategies for the adaptive ecological management of desert ecosystems. Although direct demographic responses of plant species to climatic factors have been widely acknowledged, they are also regulated by interspecific interactions (i.e., the effects of shrubs on herbaceous plants). The magnitude and direction of regulation of such interspecific interactions remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, a full factorial field experiment simulating three levels of N enrichment (ambient, 10 kg N ha-1 yr-1, and 60 kg N ha-1 yr-1) and three levels of precipitation (ambient, 20% increase, and 40% increase) were conducted in the Mu Us Desert, northern China. N enrichment and increased precipitation significantly increased herbaceous productivity by improving the soil water content and nutrient availability (e.g., soil DIN:SAP) when shrubs were not present. Taller species responded to N enrichment, whereas those with a greater specific leaf area responded to increased precipitation. When shrubs were present, they acted as a 'buffer islands' that moderated the responses of herbaceous species to N enrichment and increased precipitation by weakening the effect of the improved soil water status. The magnitude of the effect of shrubs on herbaceous biomass and richness was comparable to that of N enrichment and increased precipitation. Our results highlight the importance and complexity of both large-scale environmental changes and small-scale interspecific interactions in structuring plant communities in desert ecosystems. Moreover, abiotic environmental factors and biotic interactions should be integrated in efforts to predict the responses of plant communities to future global change in desert ecosystems.
Indirect Effects of Water Availability in Driving and Predicting Productivity in the Gobi Desert

Abstract:Climate is the fundamental determinant of plant metabolism and net primary productivity (NPP). However, whether climate drives NPP directly or indirectly is not well understand. The Gobi desert across a precipitation gradient in the arid zone provides an ideal naturally-controlled platform for studying the precipitation-productivity relationships. We conducted 3-year experiments in four Gobi desert shrublands across an aridity gradient in Gansu Province of China to test the relationship between water availability and shrub productivity as well as the relative importance of the possible factors driving productivity (using piecewise structural equation modeling) and to explore the appropriate variables for predicting productivity (using three spatial models). The results showed that water availability indirectly affected the NPP via stand biomass, while stand biomass had a significant direct effect on NPP regardless of whether the leaf water content and stand height were considered. The model based on stand size (71.6%) and the model that contained both stand size and water availability (72.3%) explained more of the variation in the water-NPP relationships than the model based on water availability (37.3%). Our findings suggest that even in extremely water-limited areas, the effects of water availability on plant growth and the kinetics of plant metabolism could be indirect via plant size, demonstrating the importance of plant size as an indicator of shrub productivity. This study explains the mechanisms underlying the NPP driving pattern and proposes a practical NPP model for arid ecosystems.

Abstract:Increasing nitrogen (N) deposition and precipitation are major drivers of global changes that are expected to influence plant nutrient resorption in desert ecosystems, where plant growth is often nutrient and water limited. However, knowledge on the effects of increased N and precipitation on them remain poorly understood. This study determined the effects of increased N (ambient, 60 kg N ha-1 year-1) and water supply (ambient, +20%, +40%), and their combination on the leaf nutrient resorption of Artemisia ordosica, a dominant shrub in the Mu Us Desert of northern China. After 2 years of treatments, only N addition significantly decreased the N resorption efficiency of A. ordosica. Both N and water addition had no effect on the phosphorus (P) resorption efficiency of this shrub, and there were no interactive effects of N and water availability on shrub nutrient resorption. The responses of shrub leaf N:P ratio tended to saturate as soil available N:P increased. The aboveground net primary productivity of A. ordosica was positively correlated with leaf P resorption efficiency, rather than N resorption efficiency. Our results suggest that N addition exacerbated the P limitation of the shrub growth and played a more fundamental role than water addition in controlling the nutrient resorption process of the desert shrub A. ordosica. This information contributes to understand the relationship between nutrient conservation strategy and plant growth of desert shrub species under global environmental changes.

Abstract:Background and aimsPlant nutrients play a fundamental role in regulating ecosystem functioning and are sensitive to global changes such as precipitation change and nitrogen (N) deposition. However, the mechanisms by which resource availability and community composition mediate canopy nutrients remain unclear.MethodsWe investigated soil resource availability, plant productivity, community composition and canopy nutrient status in a 6-year water and N addition experiment in a desert shrubland of northern China.ResultsWater addition overall negatively affected canopy N content but had no effect on canopy phosphorus (P) content, and these effects were mediated by ambient precipitation. In drier years, water addition reduced canopy N and P contents via decreasing shrub-herb ratio and increasing community productivity. In wetter years, higher precipitation levels weakened water effects on plant community, causing a neutral water effect on canopy N content. Furthermore, this increased precipitation intensified soil calcium leaching, which, in turn, had a positive water effect on canopy P content. Accordingly, canopy N and P contents showed negative logarithmic and concave-shaped relationships with precipitation, respectively. Nitrogen enrichment increased canopy N but reduced P content through increasing soil N availability and reducing shrub-herb ratio.ConclusionsOur results suggest that both ambient precipitation levels and plant functional composition play pivotal roles in mediating desert canopy nutrient responses to precipitation change and N deposition. Our findings also highlight the fundamental role of soil calcium in regulating plant P responses to precipitation change, which provide new insights into our understanding of biogeochemical coupling under global change.

Abstract:Precipitation fluctuations with high nitrogen (N) deposition severely impact terrestrial ecosystem functioning, particularly in arid areas. Here, with rainout shelter facility, a field experiment with a large variation in precipitation and N addition was conducted to disentangle the responses of the plant community to normal precipitation, less precipitation, and rewetting conditions in a desert steppe, Inner Mongolia, northern China. The field experiment established a unique annual precipitation change cycle across normal precipitation, less precipitation, and rewetting processes to quantify drought resistance, recovery and resilience by calculating functional differences among three years. Furthermore, the relationships between plant community functional traits and response indices (i.e., the resistance, recovery, and resilience) were tested to clarify the mechanisms driving their responses to precipitation regimes and N addition. The aboveground net primary production (ANPP) increased with annual precipitation and was enhanced by N addition. ANPP with reduced precipitation regimes was less resistant to drought but recovered significantly greater than that with increased precipitation regimes. The perennial species, C3 plants, and forbs mainly contributed to the variations in vegetation productivity in response to drought and wet status cycles. Drought resistance and the recovery of species' functional diversity, evenness, and ANPP stability were closely associated with precipitation changes. The present findings suggested that altered precipitation patterns, community composition, and functional stability contribute to ecosystem stability during water change cycles and are mediated slightly by N deposition. These findings advance understanding of the mechanisms of ecosystem functioning underlying the responses to climatic change.

Abstract:Understanding how plant ecophysiological traits of coexisting species within a community respond to environmental changes could help to predict the shift in plant community structure and function, but it remains limited in the scenarios of co-occurring precipitation variations and N deposition. A two-year field experiment was conducted to explore the effects of large precipitation changes (reduced and increased precipitation amount by 25% and 50% relative to ambient control) and high N deposition (10 g N m −2 yr −1 ) on a series of leaf ecophysiological traits of three dominant species ( Stipa tianschanica , a C 3 grass; Cleistogenes squarrosa , a C 4 grass; and Artemisia capillaris , a C 3 forb) in a desert steppe in Northern China. Increasing precipitation significantly linearly promoted the leaf light-saturated photosynthesis rate ( A sat ) and N use efficiency of the two C 3 species, irrespective of N addition. The rises in A sat of both C 3 species were mainly caused by increased soil moisture, which strongly induced increases in leaf stomatal conductance ( g s ) and declines in quantum yield of photosystem II ( Φ PSII ). However, the A sat of the two C 3 species was weakly correlated with their specific leaf area and leaf N concentration, whereas the A sat of the C 4 grass was negatively related to its leaf N. Moreover, the A sat , height, and aboveground biomass of the forbs were much more water-sensitive than those of both grass species, with a consequence of the most dominant species turning from grass to forbs as precipitation increased. Our findings highlight that water limitation, rather than N deficit, is the largest factor controlling plant growth in drylands, and plant species-specific ecophysiological responses to precipitation fluctuations will cause a substantial shift in the production and composition of plant community.

Abstract:Background and AimsGlobal changes (precipitation changes and nutrient deposition) profoundly impact structure and function of steppe ecosystem. However, it is unclear the mechanism by which multiple limiting resources affect plant aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) in desert steppe.MethodsWe conducted a field experiment manipulating both precipitation (3 levels: ambient and ± 50% precipitation) and nutrients addition (3 levels: ambient; nitrogen (N) addition; N/phosphorus (P)/potassium (K) addition) in a factorial design. We focused on the effects of these treatments on species diversity (species richness, Shannon index, abundance), ANPP, plant functional traits, and soil properties. We used structural equation model (SEM) to evaluate the direct and indirect effects of precipitation amount and nutrient addition on ANPP through affecting species diversity and functional traits.ResultsIncreasing precipitation increased species diversity and ANPP. NPK addition and increased 50% precipitation significantly increased ANPP over all other treatment combinations. Drought (-50%) reduced plant height and leaf dry matter content (LDMC), but increased leaf nitrogen content (LNC). Species richness, abundance, height and LDMC were positively correlated with ANPP, while specific leaf area (SLA) and LNC were negatively correlated with ANPP. SEM suggested that precipitation amount indirectly affected ANPP through its effect on abundance and SLA, while nutrient addition indirectly affected ANPP only through its effect on abundance.ConclusionIn desert steppe, the interaction of precipitation and nutrient addition had a significant positive effect on ANPP, which was mainly mediated by species diversity and functional traits. Our results highlight the importance of species diversity and functional traits in driving short-term responses of ANPP to environmental factors in desert steppe ecosystems.

Abstract:Desert microbes are expected to be substantially sensitive to global environmental changes, such as precipitation changes and elevated nitrogen deposition. However, the effects of precipitation changes and nitrogen enrichment on their diversity and community composition remain poorly understood. We conducted a field experiment over 2 years with multi-level precipitation and nitrogen addition in a desert shrubland of northern China, to examine the responses of soil bacteria and fungi in terms of diversity and community composition and to explore the roles of plant and soil factors in structuring microbial communities. Water addition significantly increased soil bacterial diversity and altered the community composition by increasing the relative abundances of stress-tolerant (dormant) taxa (e.g., Acidobacteria and Planctomycetes); however, nitrogen addition had no substantial effects. Increased precipitation and nitrogen did not impact soil fungal diversity, but significantly shifted the fungal community composition. Specifically, water addition reduced the relative abundances of drought-tolerant taxa (e.g., the orders Pezizales, Verrucariales, and Agaricales), whereas nitrogen enrichment decreased those of oligotrophic taxa (e.g., the orders Agaricales and Sordariales). Shifts in microbial community composition under water and nitrogen addition occurred primarily through changing resource availability rather than plant community. Our results suggest that water and nitrogen addition affected desert microbes in different ways, with watering shifting stress-tolerant traits and fertilization altering copiotrophic/oligotrophic traits of the microbial communities. These findings highlight the importance of resource availability in driving the desert microbial responses to short-term environmental changes.

Effects of Additional N on Herbaceous Species of Desertified Steppe in Arid Regions of China: A Four-Year Field Study

Abstract:Human-induced nitrogen (N) enrichment is impacting the structure and function of grassland ecosystems, although few studies have been conducted in arid and semi-arid ecosystems under field conditions. Here, a 4-year multi-level N addition experiment under ambient precipitation in a typical temperate desert steppe in arid regions of China was designed to evaluate the impact of N enrichment on the herbaceous vegetation community in desert ecosystems. The results showed that species richness declined in response to N addition during all 4 years, while aboveground biomass increased in the relatively wet year (2007) and decreased in the relatively dry years (2008–2010) according to N addition level, as compared to the control. Plant community composition differed among plant functional groups (PFGs) based on added N. Perennial grasses (PG) benefited more compared with annuals and perennial forbs (PF) from N enrichment in terms of biomass production under conditions of high precipitation in 2007. In relatively dry years, biomass production of all PFGs was strictly dependent on inter- and intra-annual precipitation, which led PG to dominate in 2008 (with a dry spring) and PF to dominate in 2009 and 2010. Our results demonstrate that the impact of N enrichment on the herbaceous vegetation community in desert steppes may be strongly dependent on natural precipitation patterns characterized by shifts in plant community composition, particularly in terms of biomass production.
Precipitation-induced biomass enhancement and differential allocation in Inner Mongolia's herbaceous and shrub communities

Abstract:Changes in precipitation patterns induced by global climate change have profound implications for the structure and function of grassland ecosystems. However, the relationship between plant diversity and ecosystem function across different grassland types, particularly those with varying plant compositions and dominant species, remains inadequately understood. To address this knowledge gap, a five-year experimental manipulation of precipitation was conducted within herbaceous and shrub communities in the desert grasslands of Inner Mongolia. We found that increased precipitation significantly enhances aboveground biomass (AGB), belowground biomass (BGB), and community total biomass (CTB) in both herbaceous and shrub communities. In herbaceous communities, increased precipitation led to a disproportionate increase in both aboveground and belowground biomass, supporting the optimal allocation hypothesis. Structural equation modeling (SEM) further elucidated that precipitation regulates AGB and CTB through species richness and functional traits in herbaceous communities. In shrub communities, precipitation influences AGB, BGB, and CTB by affecting species richness and soil water content. This study highlights the critical role of precipitation in shaping biomass dynamics and allocation strategies within herbaceous and shrub communities in desert steppe of Inner Mongolia. These findings provide essential insights into the potential responses of desert grassland ecosystems to ongoing climate change.
Rainfall Amount and Timing Jointly Regulate the Responses of Soil Nitrogen Transformation Processes to Rainfall Increase in an Arid Desert Ecosystem

Abstract:Climate models predict greater rainfall will occur in the arid and semiarid regions of Northwest China, where nitrogen (N) cycling is particularly sensitive to changes in rainfall regimes. Yet, how increasing rainfall regulates soil N transformation processes in these water-limited regions is still not well understood. We conducted a manipulative experiment in a desert ecosystem in Northwest China, whereby we simulated five different scenarios of future rain regimes (natural rains plus 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the local mean annual precipitation) each month from May to September in 2009. We examined in situ net N mineralization and soil N availability in both vegetated and bare soils, as well as leaf litter N release for the dominant shrub species Nitraria tangutorum monthly after each rain addition. We found that increased water availability via the simulated rain addition significantly decreased total net N mineralization rates over the growing season in both vegetated and bare soils. A larger amount of litter N was released after rain addition in vegetated soils, which could contribute to the higher concentrations of inorganic N in vegetated soils compared to bare soils. Furthermore, we found that the responses of soil N transformation processes to rain additions showed great seasonality, and thus both rainfall amount and timing jointly regulate the responses of soil N transformation processes to rainfall increase under future rainfall scenarios in this arid desert ecosystem. Over the growing season, rainfall addition reduced soil inorganic N concentrations but favored plant N uptake and microbial N immobilization. We suggest that the cycling of N will be greatly changed under future rainfall regimes, which may have consequences for ecosystem stability and functioning in this "N-conserving" desert ecosystem.

Abstract:Global warming is predicted to change precipitation amount and reduce precipitation frequency, which may alter grassland primary productivity and biomass allocation, especially when interact with other global change factors, such as nitrogen deposition. The interactive effects of changes in precipitation amount and nitrogen addition on productivity and biomass allocation are extensively studied; however, how these effects may be regulated by the predicted reduction in precipitation frequency remain largely unknown. Using a mesocosm experiment, we investigated responses of primary productivity and biomass allocation to the manipulated changes in precipitation amount (PA: 150 mm, 300 mm, 450 mm), precipitation frequency (PF: medium and low), and nitrogen addition (NA: 0 and 10 g N m −2 yr −1 ) in a Leymus chinensis grassland. We detected significant effects of the PA, PF and NA treatments on both aboveground biomass (AGB) and belowground biomass (BGB); but the interactive effects were only significant between the PA and NA on AGB. Both AGB and BGB increased with an increment in precipitation amount and nitrogen addition; the reduction in PF decreased AGB, but increased BGB. The reduced PF treatment induced an enhancement in the variation of soil moisture, which subsequently affected photosynthesis and biomass formation. Overall, there were mismatches in the above- and belowground biomass responses to changes in precipitation regime. Our results suggest the predicted changes in precipitation regime, including precipitation amount and frequency, is likely to alter primary productivity and biomass allocation, especially when interact with nitrogen deposition. Therefore, predicting the influence of global changes on grassland structure and functions requires the consideration of interactions among multiple global change factors.

Abstract:Tests of a slow-release molluscicide containing 50% copper sulfate were under-taken in laboratory and field situations in St. Lucia. In laboratory trials, a granule form of the molluscicide produced 100% mortality of Biomphalaria glabrata down to 4 mg/liter active ingredient (a.i), while the pellet form produced 100% mortality down to 8 mg/liter a.i. In field trials, a dose of 100 mg/liter a.i. in granule form caused mortality of B. glabrata in banana drains but had no effect on B. glabrata populations in a marsh habitat. In both habitats, the dose of 100 mg/liter produced mortality of other molluscan fauna which caused changes in the molluscan diversity indices. This failure in field trials may have been due to dilution of copper levels caused by flooding and also by uptake of copper by mud and algae.

Abstract:Aims The shrublands of northern China have poor soil and nitrogen (N) deposition has greatly increased the local soil available N for decades. Shrub growth is one of important components of C sequestration in shrublands and litterfall acts as a vital link between plants and soil. Both are key factors in nutrient and energy cycling of ter-restrial ecosystems, which greatly affected by nitrogen (N) addition (adding N fertilizer to the surface soil di-rectly). However, the effects and significance of N addition on C sequestration and litterfall in shrublands remain unclear. Thus, a study was designed to investigate how N deposition and related treatments affected shrublands growth related to C sequestration and litterfall production of Vitex negundo var. heterophylla and Spiraea salicifo-lia in Mt. Dongling, Beijing, including four N addition treatment levels (control (N0, 0 kg N·hm–2·a–1), low N (N1, 20 kg N·hm–2·a–1), medium N (N2, 50 kg N·hm–2·a–1) and high N (N3, 100 kg N·hm–2·a–1)). Basal di-ameter and plant height of shrub were measured from 2012–2013 within all treatments, and allometric models for different species of shrub’s live branch, leaf and root biomass were developed based on independent variables of basal diameter and plant height, which will be used to calculate biomass increment of shrub layer. Litterfall (lit-terfall sometimes is named litter, referring to the collective name for all organic matter produced by the above-ground part of plants and returned to the surface, and mainly includes leaves, bark, dead twigs, flowers and fruits.) also was investigated from 2012–2013 within all treatments. Important findings The results showed 1) mean basal diameter of shrubs in the V. negundo var. heterophylla and S. salicifolia shrublands were increased by 1.69%, 2.78%, 2.51%, 1.80%and 1.38%, 1.37%, 1.59%, 2.05%every year;2) The height growth rate (the shrub height relative growth rate is defined with the percentage increase of plant height) of shrubs in the V. negundo var. heterophylla and S. salicifolia shrublands were 8.36%, 8.48%, 9.49%, 9.83%and 2.12%, 2.86%, 2.36%, 2.52%every year, respectively. Thee results indicated that N deposition stimulated growth of shrub layer both in V. negundo var. heterophylla and S. salicifolia shrublands, but did not reach statistical significance among all nitrogen treatments. The above-ground biomass increment of shrub layer in the V. negundo var. heterophylla and S. salicifolia shrublands were 0.19, 0.23, 0.14, 0.15 and 0.027, 0.025, 0.032, 0.041 t C·hm–2·a–1 respectively, which demonstrated that short-term N addition had no significant ef-fects on the accumulation of C storage of the two shrublands. The litter production of the V. negundo var. hetero-phylla and S. salicifolia communities in 2013 were 135.7 and 129.6 g·m–2 under natural conditions, respectively. Nitrogen addition promoted annual production of total litterfall and different components of litterfall to a certain extent, but did not reach statistical significance among all nitrogen treatments. Above results indicated that short-term fertilization, together with extremely low soil moisture content and other related factors, lead to inefficient use of soil available nitrogen and slow response of shrublands to N addition treatments.
Effects of Nitrogen Addition on Nitrogen Resorption in Temperate Shrublands in Northern China.

Abstract:Nutrient resorption from senescing leaves is a key mechanism of nutrient conservation for plants. The nutrient resorption efficiency is highly dependent on leaf nutrient status, species identity and soil nutrient availability. Nitrogen is a limiting nutrient in most ecosystems, it is widely reported that nitrogen resorption efficiency (NRE) was highly dependent on the soil nitrogen availability and vary with N deposition. The effects of nitrogen deposition on NRE and nitrogen concentration in green and senescing leaves have been well established for forests and grasslands; in contrast, little is known on how plants in shrublands respond to nitrogen deposition across the world. In this study, we conducted a two-year nitrogen addition manipulation experiment to explore the responses of nitrogen concentration in green and senescing leaves, and NRE of seven dominant species, namely, Vitex negundo, Wikstroemia chamaedaphne, Carex rigescens and Cleistogenes chinensis from the Vitex negundo community, and Spirea trilobata, Armeniaca sibirica, V. negundo, C. rigescens and Spodiopogon sibiricus from the Spirea trilobata community, to nitrogen deposition in two typical shrub communities of Mt. Dongling in northern China. Results showed that NRE varied remarkably among different life forms, which was lowest in shrubs, highest in grasses, and intermediate in forbs, implying that shrubs may be most capable of obtaining nitrogen from soil, grasses may conserve more nitrogen by absorption from senescing leaves, whereas forbs may adopt both mechanisms to compete for limited nitrogen supply from the habitats. As the N addition rate increases, N concentration in senescing leaves ([N]s) increased consistent from all species from both communities, that in green leaves ([N]g) increased for all species from the Vitex negundo community, while no significant responses were found for all species from the Spirea trilobata community; NRE decreased for all species except A. sibirica from the Vitex community and W. chamaedaphn from the Spirea community. Given the substantial interspecific variations in nutrient concentration, resorption and the potentially changing community composition, and the increased soil nutrient availability due to fertilization may indirectly impact nutrient cycling in this region.

Abstract:Plant C, N and P can reflect plant strategies of nutrient utilization and allocation. Precipitation is a key factor affecting plant nutrient uptake and utilization strategies especially in arid and semiarid regions, and it is predicted to increase in the cold deserts of Northwest China due to climate change. However, the balance of C, N and P stoichiometry in annual plants at different growth stages in response to increased precipitation is not known. Thus, we performed an experiment on the annual grass Eremopyrum distans in the Gurbantunggut Desert to determine the effect of increased precipitation on C, N and P utilization and allocation at different growth stages. In the control, organ C concentration was relatively stable during the life cycle, but leaf and root N and P concentration increased during the vegetative stage; culm N concentration decreased and P concentration increased and then decreased with plant growth. Increased precipitation significantly increased the leaf N and P concentration and decreased the C:N and C:P ratios at the vegetative growth stage, but leaf N:P was lower than 14 during the whole growth stage. Increased precipitation could improve the leaf N and P resorption efficiency to cope with the reproduction allocation, and the root nutrients are more sensitive to increased precipitation. These results indicate that increased precipitation could improve the nutrient absorption and utilization for vegetative and reproductive growth of E. distans, and the root system plays crucially important role to influence the stoichiometry under varied environment.

Abstract:Widespread shrub encroachment is profoundly impacting the structures and functions of global drylands, and precipitation change is assumed to be one of the most critical factors affecting this phenomenon. However, there is little evidence to show how precipitation changes will affect the process. In this study, we conducted a 6‐year precipitation manipulation experiment (‐30%, ambient, +30%, and +50%) to investigate the effects of precipitation changes on the growth of shrubs and herbaceous plants in a shrub‐encroached grassland in Inner Mongolia. We found that the increasing precipitation significantly increased the mean height, coverage, and aboveground biomass of herbaceous species, while the growth of shrub species did not exhibit a significant response to precipitation changes. With increasing precipitation, the relative coverage of shrubs decreased, while that of herbs increased. The native dominant herbaceous plant (Leymus chinensis) with more sensitive maximum photosynthetic rate to the precipitation change, showed higher photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency and water use efficiency than those of the encroached shrub species (Caragana microphylla) at high soil moisture contents, reflecting that the ecophysiological characteristics of L. chinensis might provide it a competitive advantage under increased precipitation. Our findings suggest that increasing precipitation may slow down shrub encroachment by facilitating herbaceous growth in Mongolian grasslands, and consequently affect the forage value and carbon budget in these ecosystems.

Abstract:Questions: What are the effects of a shrub (Haloxylon ammodendron) on spatial patterns of soil moisture in different seasons? How does productivity of understorey annuals respond to these effects? Are such effects always positive for annuals under shrubs? Location: South Gurbantunggut Desert, northwest China. Methods: Using geostatistics, we explored seasonal patterns of topsoil moisture in a 12 × 9‐m plot over the growing season. To determine spatial patterns of understorey annuals in response to H. ammodendron presence, biomass of annuals was recorded in four 0.2 × 5.0‐m transects from the centre of a shrub to the space between shrubs (interspace). We also investigated vertical distribution of root biomass for annuals and soil moisture dynamics across soil profiles in shrub‐canopied areas and interspaces. Results: Topsoil moisture changed from autocorrelation in the wet spring to random structure in the dry season, while soil moisture below 20 cm was higher in shrub‐canopied areas. Across all microhabitats, soil moisture in upper soil layers was higher than in deeper soil layers during the spring wet season, but lower during summer drought. Topsoil was close to air‐dry during the dry season and developed a ‘dry sand layer’ that reduced evaporative loss of soil water from deeper layers recharged by snowmelt in spring. Aboveground biomass of understorey annuals was lowest adjacent to shrub stems and peaked at the shrub margin, forming a ‘ring’ of high herbaceous productivity surrounding individual shrubs. To acclimate to drier conditions, annuals in interspaces invested more root biomass in deeper soil with a root/shoot ratio (R/S) twice that in canopied areas. Conclusions: Positive and negative effects of shrubs on understorey plants in arid ecosystems are commonly related to nature of the environmental stress and tested species. Our results suggest there is also microhabitat‐dependence in the Gurbantunggut Desert. Soil water under H. ammodendron is seasonally enriched in topsoil and deeper layers. Understorey annuals respond to the effect of shrubs on soil water availability with lower R/S and less root biomass in deeper soil layers and develop a ‘ring’ of high productivity at the shrub patch margin where positive and negative effects of shrubs are balanced.

Abstract:Drought and nitrogen enrichment could profoundly affect the productivity of semiarid ecosystems. However, how ecosystem productivity will respond to different drought scenarios, especially with a concurrent increase in nitrogen availability, is still poorly understood. Using data from a 4‐year field experiment conducted in a semiarid temperate steppe, we explored the responses of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) to different drought scenarios and nitrogen addition, and the underlying mechanisms linking soil properties, plant species richness, functional diversity (community‐weighted means of plant traits, functional dispersion) and phylogenetic diversity (net relatedness index) to ANPP. Our results showed that completely excluding precipitation in June (1‐month intense drought) and reducing half the precipitation amount from June to August (season‐long chronic drought) both significantly reduced ANPP, with the latter having a more negative impact on ANPP. However, reducing half of the precipitation frequency from June to August (precipitation redistribution) had no significant effect on ANPP. Nitrogen addition increased ANPP irrespective of drought scenarios. ANPP was primarily determined by soil moisture and nitrogen availability by regulating the community‐weighted means of plant height, rather than other aspects of plant diversity. Our findings suggest that precipitation amount is more important than precipitation redistribution in influencing the productivity of temperate steppe, and nitrogen supply could alleviate the adverse impacts of drought on grassland productivity. Our study advances the mechanistic understanding of how the temperate grassland responds to drought stress, and implies that management strategies to protect tall species in the community would be beneficial for maintaining the productivity and carbon sequestration of grassland ecosystems under climate drought.
