Abstract:A disposable amperometric biosensor for commercial use to detect hydrogen peroxide has been developed. The sensor is based on screen-printed carbon paste electrodes modified by electropolymerization of pyrrole with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) entrapped. The facture techniques of fabricating the enzyme electrodes are suitable for mass production and quality control. The biosensor shows a linear amperometric response to H2O2 from 0.1 to 2.0 mM, with a sensitivity of 33.24 mu A mM(-1) cm(-2). Different operational parameters of electropolymerization are evaluated and optimized.

Abstract:In this paper,palladium-silver （Pd-Ag） system was studied for hydrogen sensing.Nanofilm of Pd-Ag was fabricated on a porous ceramic substrate through a combination of microfabrication techniques.The electric resistance of the zigzag-shaped microstructure was measured toward hydrogen concentration change.The sensing element demonstrates high sensitivity,fast response and fast recovery to hydrogen.The Pd-Ag film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） equipped with X probe to correlate its physical and chemical properties to its sensing performance.The present sensor is very promising for room temperature hydrogen leakage detection and related applications.The temperature effect on the sensing performance of the metal film was also investigated.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), as a biomarker in a series of physiological processes, plays a crucial role in investigating the pathogenesis of some diseases. The highly sensitive and selective detection of H2O2 release from living cells has aroused tremendous research interests. Herein, a non-enzymatic electrochemical H2O2 biosensor was constructed based on AgPt bimetallic nanoparticles-structured MoS2 nanohybrid (AgPt/MoS2) as an electrocatalyst. The AgPt/MoS2 nanohybrid was successfully synthesized by a facile wet-chemical method. Compared with AgPt nanoparticles, the AgPt/MoS2 nanohybrid exhibited significant enhancement in catalytic performance towards H2O2. The main factor is that MoS2 nanosheets as a supporting material promote AgPt nanoparticles to expose more active sites. The electrochemical response of the AgPt/MoS2 hybrid-based biosensor to H2O2 was linear in the range of 20 μM - 4 mM, and the detection limit was calculated as 1.0 μM. To prove practicality, the biosensor was further applied to detect H2O2 release from living SMMC-7721 cells. These results indicate the potential applications of the developed biosensor in monitoring physiological processes.

Identification of H2S Impurity in Hydrogen Using Temperature Modulated Metal Oxide Resistive Sensors with a Novel Signal Processing Technique

Abstract:We report here on the results of a study on the response of copper oxide (p-type and mixed) based, low-power microelectromechanical (MEMS) gas sensors to parts per million (ppm) levels of hydrogen sulfide in a hydrogen atmosphere. It is shown that a thermally modulated metal oxide gas sensor can be used for the identification of the H2S impurity in a reducing environment without the need for a reference gas or baseline signal. It was found that by using this material with a method of transient frequency analysis, a resistive gas sensor can operate reliably in a harsh environment, e.g., pure hydrogen and elevated humidity levels. A linear response in gas concentration was obtained from the analysis of transient sensor signal. This novel temperature modulation technique is more effective than an isothermal method where H2 background is introduced, due to the elimination of drift and additive noise in the sensor response that limits the practical utilization of these low-cost sensors.

Abstract:Low concentration hydrogen gas detection is of paramount importance both in space applications as well as medical applications. It is also critically important for safe handling of hydrogen below the explosive limit. Here, we report a novel hybrid Pd metal-polymer chemiresistive sensor that can sense 0.5% hydrogen ($H_2$) gas in ambient conditions of temperature and pressure with the highest reported sensitivity($\sim$30%) obtained earlier by a physical deposition technique, making it an extremely good sensor for real life low concentration hydrogen gas detection. The sensor is easy to fabricate and is also extremely cost-effective for commercial applications. The obtained hybrid chemiresistive sensor comprises palladium (Pd) nanocrystals bound by oxygen and nitrogen atoms of a stabilizer Polyvinylepyrollidone (PVP), grown on top of a selfassembled monolayer. The exceptional rise time-constant is proposed to arise from hydrogen loading at the (111) surface of the palladium nanocrystal which is a very fast process and subsequent fast diffusion of the H atoms from the surface into the bulk. An effort to increase the number of available sites by UV-ozone cleaning, resulted in a degradation of the sensing device due to the poisoning of the available sites by oxygen.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) detectors are important tools to ensure the safety in H2 production/storage/transportation/use and also monitor many H2-related physiochemical processes in industrial or medical practices. Ideal H2 detectors should not only have high detection performance (e.g., high sensitivity and selectivity) but also possess low power-consumption, high compactness, simple fabrication using low-cost materials, and ease of instrumentation that can be easily handled and operated. In this work, nanoporous composites by simply reducing palladium (Pd) precursors to the surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were developed and optimized for the development of a resistive H2 detector. The detector was prepared by depositing solution droplets of Pd/HNT with an optimal mass concentration on an interdigitated microelectrode surface of 1 cm × 1 cm and then drying it at 65 °C. The developed H2 detector exhibited reliable H2 detection, achieving low limit H2 detections of 27 ppb and <10 ppm in both N2 and air, respectively. It also presented high selectivity, differencing H2 from other interfering gases such as CO2 and CH4, and demonstrated stability in its response from room temperature to 50 °C. We attribute the characteristics of the detector performance to the nature of Pd/HNT composites (large surface, high porosity, specific reaction of Pd to H2, etc.). Given its high detection performance, simple resistance read-out, and ease of fabrication, it is believed that the developed detector will have broad applications in the H2 energy industry and many other H2-related industrial and medical procedures.

Abstract:Hydrogen is regarded as one of the most promising clean substitutes for fossil fuels toward a carbon-zero society. However, the safety management of the upcoming hydrogen energy infrastructure has not been fully prepared, in contrast to the well-established natural gas and gasoline systems. On the frontline is the guard post of hydrogen detectors, which need to be deployed on various structural surfaces and environmental conditions. Conventional hydrogen detectors are usually bulky and environmentally sensitive, limiting their flexible and conformal deployment to various locations, such as pipelines and valves. Herein, we demonstrate the successful synthesis of a palladium-modified epitaxial metal-organic framework (MOF) on single-layer graphene to fabricate a heterostructure material (Epi-MOF-Pd). Device based on the heterostructure demonstrates high sensitivity toward low- concentration H2 (155% resistance response to 1% H2 within 12 s, a theoretical detection limit of 3 ppm). The 25 nm epitaxial MOF acquires electrons from the Pd nanoparticles after the trace amount of H2 is chemically adsorbed and further relays the electrons to the highly conductive graphene. The Epi-MOF-Pd is both flexible and enduring, and maintains stable detection over 10 000 bending cycles. Through photolithography, device arrays with a density of 3000 units/cm2 are successfully fabricated. This versatile material provides a prospective avenue for the mass production of high-performance chemical-sensitive electronics, which could significantly improve the hydrogen safety management on demand.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H 2 ) has attracted considerable attention as a renewable energy carrier owing to its recyclability and environmental friendliness. However, due to its explosive nature at concentrations above 4% in air, the detection of H 2 is a critical safety concern. Thereby, this study investigates the impact of the growth forms of the Pd/WO 3 thin film layer on the sensor's ability to detect H 2 , including the response direction and rate of the sensor's resistance change. The chemoresistive sensors were constructed using a nanoporous WO 3 film (formed via RF sputtering on a Si/SiO 2 wafer) and a palladium layer (deposited via e-beam evaporation). Experimental results display the excellent hydrogen detection performance of the sensors at concentrations ranging from 1- 10% (in air) by the change of chemoresistance and demonstrate that the strategies used in fabricating the sensors are effective for practical use. By gaining a deeper understanding of the hydrogen sensing mechanisms in Pd/WO 3 thin films, this study reveals how to improve the performance of hydrogen sensors and ensure their safe use in various industries.

Abstract:Hydrogen gas holds tremendous potential across various domains, encompassing industrial applications, medical usage, and scientific research, among others. The precise and reliable detection of hydrogen gas is of paramount importance to ensure its safe utilization and accurate control of associated reactions, among other considerations. However, conventional approaches for quantitatively detecting H 2 , such as gas chromatography and hydrogen sensors, primarily focus on gas-phase detection, neglecting the detection of trace amounts of H 2 in the liquid phase. This limitation becomes particularly pertinent when employing palladium hydride (PdH x ) as a slow-releasing agent of hydrogen for medical purposes, necessitating the quantification of H 2 released from PdH x in aqueous solutions, which is not straightforward to accomplish. This study presents a straightforward and convenient electrochemical method for quantifying H 2 in an aqueous solution released from PdH x . The proposed method establishes a linear relationship between the theoretical concentration of H 2 in the solution and the amount of H 2 that reacted on the working electrode. Consequently, by measuring the amount of H 2 that reacted on the working electrode in a PdH x dispersion, the actual concentration of H 2 can be determined using the established linear relation. Specifically, it was found that the concentration of H 2 released by 200 μg/mL PdH x at room temperature was determined to be 0.23 mM. To validate the findings, a simulation of the hydrogen detection reaction was conducted, which exhibited good agreement with the experimental results. The simulation results suggest that the presence of a peak near the primary hydrogen oxidation peak could be attributed to the adsorption of H 2 and H + near the electrode surface, and this effect diminishes with increasing temperature due to the weakening of species adsorption at elevated temperatures. Moreover, this study also demonstrated the quantitative verification of O 2 in an aqueous solution using a similar method. The detection of trace amounts of H 2 or O 2 in aqueous solutions can find applications in determining the actual production of H 2 in hydrogen evolution reactions facilitated by molecular catalysts and evaluating the trace amounts of H 2 in photocatalysis as a complementary technique to gas chromatography. This methodology holds significant potential for advancing various areas of research.

Abstract:Pd-based constituents have been widely used for sensing H 2 due to the incredible selectivity, however, the sensitivity and measuring range in anaerobic ambience are largely limited for these using electronic signals. The variations between Pd and coincided hydride would typically increase resistance upon absorbing H 2 , whereas the intrinsic α - β phase transition alters the regularity of response features. Surprisingly, an inverse response has been detected by alloying Ag into Pd lattice, and this negative trend could be resulting from a new mechanism based on the experimental investigation and first-principles calculations. It is the contribution of modified Pd/Ag ratio, which optimizes the electronic band structure and density of states (DOS), thus a trade-off between free electron concentration and coincided scattering strength, would tune the response trend and make a switch. Consequently, the resistance of films with proper Ag contents, would be decreased at low H 2 concentrations (10 ppm-4 vt.%), and the detection range can be widened as the trend reverses to be positive at high concentrations. These, combined with the ultralow detection limit of 10 ppm, and proportional sensor response values from − 0.5% of 10 ppm H 2 to − 3.8% of 4 vt.% at 1 atm, confirm the promising virtues of anaerobic ambience used Pd-based sensors configuring inverse response. Furthermore, our study elucidates that alloying proper elements into Pd to modify the electronic band structure and DOS on Fermi energy, may be an effective strategy for promoting H 2 sensing features.

Abstract:Dissolved hydrogen (dH 2 ) is an important parameter in anaerobic digestion (AD) processes, in particular in a two-stage operation mode encompassing separate hydrolytic/acidogenic and methanogenic stages. Then, monitoring of dH 2 as a substrate of hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis is essential to avoid feast and famine conditions. Despite its significance, there is currently a lack of established monitoring systems which are capable of reliably measuring dH 2 concentrations in culture broth. To address this challenge, we propose a novel measurement system, which is based on the membrane-free extraction of hydrogen in an extraction chamber and the subsequent analysis by a metal-oxide (MOX) gas sensor. The response time of the MOX sensor lies in the range of seconds, while the entire measurement process completes within a total processing time of about 70 min). This study explores the measurement performance of the dH 2 sensor in the hydrolytic/acidogenic and methanogenic stage during lab-scale anaerobic digestion. The measurement principle was consistently applied for over three months. During this period, the methanogenic stage was partly sparged with gaseous hydrogen to monitor the dH 2 response afterwards. The dH 2 sensor responded reliably to these and other dynamic changes. Depending on the process conditions, concentrations between 4,000 Pa were detected, corresponding to dH 2 concentrations of 30 μmol L −1 . The findings demonstrated the importance of dH 2 monitoring and show that it facilitates the control of H 2 addition, thereby preventing both under- and oversupply during methanogenesis.

Abstract:Given the pivotal role of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) in numerous biological progresses, there has been a recent surge in the development of highly effective electrochemical sensors for H 2 O 2 detection. In this article, we propose an enzyme-free amperometric system for the sensitive and selective recognition of H 2 O 2 , leveraging ultrafine PtPd alloy/ionic liquid-carbon dots (IL-CDs) nanocomposites modified flexible carbon fiber. The IL-CDs were synthesized through the direct electrodeposition of ionic liquid [BMIM][PF 6 ] using Pt sheets as electrodes. Subsequently, a sequential electrodeposition of IL-CDs, H 2 PtCl 6 , and PdCl 2 onto the activated carbon fiber (ACF) yielded the PtPd/IL-CDs/ACF microelectrode. This microelectrode serves as an enzyme-free amperometric sensor for H 2 O 2 detection, exhibiting an improved response with a significantly lower detection limit of 0.29 μM and a relatively broad linear range spanning from 2 to 6561 μM. Furthermore, this enzyme-free amperometric H 2 O 2 sensor demonstrates remarkable stability over extended periods and exceptional performance in practical applications, such as the analysis of commercially available milk, human serum, human urine, and living cancer cells analysis. This study offers a fresh perspective on amperometric sensors based on metal alloys and CDs electrode, highlighting the potential of enzyme-independent detection for hydrogen peroxide in biological systems.

Abstract:An investigation and analysis have been conducted on a newly developed chemiresistive-type sensor to detect hydrogen gas. The studied senor is synthesized with an indium gallium oxide (IGO) thin film formed by RF magnetron sputtering and palladium (Pd) nanoparticles (NPs) deposited by vacuum thermal evaporation . The utilize of Pd NPs can significantly improve the sensing response and sensing speed for hydrogen gas. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are employed for the analyses of the relevant structure, element, and composition properties. The sensing mechanism for hydrogen gas is elucidated in this work. In this experiment, the studied Pd NP/IGO sensor exhibits an ultra high sensing response S R of 1.39 × 10 7 under 1% H 2 /air gas at 300°C.. The studied sensor can be operated at room temperature with a significant S R of 304.3. Besides, the studied sensor shows good repetitive operation performance. Hence, the studied Pd NP/IGO structure offers a great potential for the development of hydrogen sensing applications with outstanding performance.

Abstract:Palladium is a well-known hydrogen-absorbing material. When palladium is functionalized with copper(II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (HKUST-1), a hydrogen-adsorbing metal–organic framework, its hydrogen-absorption capacity can be increased. In this work, we show that, by growing the HKUST-1 on palladium nanoparticle-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (Pd NP/SWCNT), we can dynamically monitor the adsorption and desorption of hydrogen from the HKUST-1 and Pd NP composite by using the carbon nanotubes as transducers in chemiresistors. Addition of HKUST-1 to the Pd NP/SWCNT was shown to increase the sensitivity of the nanocomposite material to hydrogen by 300% and limit of detection to hydrogen by 33%. The increase in sensitivity was attributed to the increased hydrogen sorption capacity of the combined HKUST-1/Pd NP. A factor of 8 improvement in sensitivity was further achieved by using semiconductor-enriched SWCNT instead of mixed metallic/semiconducting nanotubes and a corresponding improvement in the theoretical limit of detection down to 70 ppb.

Abstract:Selective sensing of trace hydrogen gas is highly desirable in leak detection applications, and it has recently come to the fore to an even larger degree due to the great potential of hydrogen in the current energy transition. One difficulty of room-temperature hydrogen sensing in an open environment is the potential interference from multiple other analytes, including water vapor, especially in high-humidity environments. To develop a high-responsivity, selective hydrogen gas sensor, ultrathin palladium nanosheets (PdNS) were synthesized using a hydrothermal method. Then, the PdNS were utilized as the chemical recognition layers in gravimetric resonant gas sensors for the real-time detection of hydrogen at room temperature. The nanoscale structure of the PdNS provides the material with a high amount of functional surface area; in turn, this allowed for significant surface-analyte interactions and high-performance sensing. Importantly, the PdNS active layer can selectively sense hydrogen gas in the presence of multiple interfering gases (e.g., acetone, alcohols, and water vapor) in the concentration range of 1–5% in both nitrogen and air environments. Therefore, this sensor system may potentially be of interest for future industrial applications regarding the safe handling of hydrogen gas.

Abstract:Chemisorption can lead to a change in electrical conductivity, which allows using semiconductor materials to create gas sensors. On the other hand, semiconductor sensors can be used as devices for studying the chemisorption of gases. In this work, we set two tasks. The first of them was to create a sensor for the selective determination of hydrogen in air, including in a mixture with other gases. The second task was to determine the mechanism of hydrogen chemisorption on the surface of metal oxides with palladium (II) oxide additives. We obtained and characterised nanodispersed materials based on SnO2 and WO3 with additions of 3% PdO by weight. We compared the electrical characteristics of these materials in stationary temperature conditions as well as with temperature modulation in the presence of hydrogen, methane, and their mixtures. The specific features of hydrogen chemisorption were determined on the surface of metal oxide semiconductors based on SnO2 and WO3 with PdO additives in the temperature modulation mode of the sensor. It was shown that the extrema in the dependence of the sensor’s electrical conductivity on temperature can be explained by the contribution of proton transfer to the total electrical conductivity. The presence of extrema in the electrical conductivity of sensors, which were observed in thermal modulation mode in the presence of hydrogen, allows conducting qualitative and quantitative analysis of not only single-component gas systems, but also of mixtures of hydrogen with other analyte gases. In particular, this work demonstrated that it was possible to determine the composition of a hydrogen-methane mixture in air using a single metal oxide sensor. The advantage of this approach is that multidimensional data arrays can be easily processed.

Abstract:The development of hydrogen sensors is of paramount importance for timely leak detection and remains a crucial unmet need. Palladium-based materials, well known as hydrogen sensors, still suffer from poisoning and deactivation. Here, a hybrid hydrogen sensor consisting of a Pd nanocluster (NC) film, a metal-organic framework (MOF), and a polymer, are proposed. The polymer coating, as a protection layer, endows the sensor with excellent H<sub>2</sub> selectivity and CO-poisoning resistance. The MOF serves as an interface layer between the Pd NC film and the polymer layer, which alters the nature of the interaction with hydrogen and leads to significant sensing performance improvements, owing to the interfacial electronic coupling between Pd NCs and the MOF. The strategy overcomes the shortcomings of retarded response speed and degraded sensitivity induced by the polymer coating of a Pd NC film-polymer hybrid system. This is the first exhibition of a hydrogen-sensing enhancement mechanism achieved by engineering the electronic coupling between Pd and a MOF. The work establishes a deep understanding of the hydrogen-sensing enhancement mechanism at the nanoscale and provides a feasible strategy to engineer next-generation gas-sensing nanodevices with superior sensing figures of merit via hybrid material systems.

Abstract:Metal oxide semiconductors (MOSS) are among the most promising materials for sensing hydrogen in distributed use, yet prevalent hydrogen sensors based on porous thick-film MOSs have the standing and serious drawback of demanding high working temperatures. Here we report on the surprising experimental observation of porous bulk Pt-TiO2 nanocomposite ceramics that exhibit ultrahigh hydrogen sensitivities of the order of 10(4) for 1000 ppm H-2 in N-2 at room temperature, with fast response and short recovery times of 10 s and 20 s, respectively. We also demonstrate that hydrogen diffuses in the bulk ceramics with an unusually high diffusion coefficient, and a novel hydrogen sensing mechanism rooted in hydrogen chemisorption on TiO2 is established. The central findings help to enrich our understanding of hydrogen interaction with MOSs, and are also expected to be instrumental in developing related technologies with hydrogen as the energy carrier. Polymerization-Induced Aggregation Approach Toward Uniform Pd Nanoparticle-Decorated Mesoporous SiO2/WO3 Microspheres for Hydrogen Sensing.

Abstract:Hydrogen as an important clean energy source with a high energy density has attracted extensive attention in fuel cell vehicles and industrial production. However, considering its flammable and explosive property, gas sensors are desperately desired to efficiently monitor H2 concentration in practical applications. Herein, a facile polymerization-induced aggregation strategy was proposed to synthesize uniform Si-doped mesoporous WO3 (Si-mWO3) microspheres with tunable sizes. The polymerization of the melamine-formaldehyde resin prepolymer (MF prepolymer) in the presence of silicotungstic acid hydrate (abbreviated as H4SiW) leads to uniform MF/H4SiW hybrid microspheres, which can be converted into Si-mWO3 microspheres through a simple thermal decomposition treatment process. In addition, benefiting from the pore confinement effect, monodispersed Pd-decorated Si-mWO3 microspheres (Pd/Si-mWO3) were subsequently synthesized and applied as sensitive materials for the sensing and detection of hydrogen. Owing to the oxygen spillover effect of Pd nanoparticles, Pd/Si-mWO3 enables adsorption of more oxygen anions than pure mWO3. These Pd nanoparticles dispersed on the surface of Si-mWO3 accelerated the dissociation of hydrogen and promoted charge transfer between Pd nanoparticles and WO3 crystal particles, which enhanced the sensing sensitivity toward H2. As a result, the gas sensor based on Pd/Si-mWO3 microspheres exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity (Rair/Rgas = 33.5) to 50 ppm H2 at a relatively low operating temperature (210 °C), which was 30 times higher than that of the pure Si-mWO3 sensor. To develop intelligent sensors, a portable sensor module based on Pd/Si-mWO3 in combination with wireless Bluetooth connection was designed, which achieved real-time monitoring of H2 concentration, opening up the possibility for use as intelligent H2 sensors.
Electrochemistry and biosensing activity of cytochrome c immobilized in macroporous materials

Abstract:An amperometric biosensor for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) has been constructed by immobilizing cytochrome c on an indium/tin oxide (ITO) electrode modified with a macroporous material. Cyclic voltammetry showed that the direct and quasi-reversible electron transfer of cytochrome c proceeds without the need for an electron mediator. A surface-controlled electron transfer process can be observed with an apparent heterogeneous electron-transfer rate constant (k s ) of 29.2 s −1 . The biosensor displays excellent electrocatalytic responses to the reduction of H 2 O 2 to give amperometric responses that increase steadily with the concentration of H 2 O 2 in the range from 5 μM to 2 mM. The detection limit is 0.61 μM at pH 7.4. The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant (K m ) of the biosensor is 1.06 mM. This investigation not only provided a method for the direct electron transfer of cytochrome c on macroporous materials, but also established a feasible approach for durable and reliable detection of H 2 O 2 . Figure Biosensor for hydrogen peroxide was developed by immobilizing cytochrome c in the macroporous ordered silica foam (MOSF) through the electrostatic interaction. The achievement of the direct electron transfer between cytochrome c and electrode surface indicated that the MOSF modified electrode displayed good affinity and biocompatibility for cytochrome c .
