Abstract:Abstract The nano-precipitates and nanotwins enable to improve the mechanical performance of NiCo-based alloys. In this work, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to investigate the strengthening mechanisms of nanotwinned medium-entropy NiCoCr alloys with various distributions and volume fractions of nano-precipitates. MD simulations reveal that mechanical performance for the precipitates located in twin boundaries is better than that located in the twin lamellae. The precipitate-induced strengthening makes the nanotwinned NiCoCr alloys to achieve the maximum flow stress during increasing the precipitate volume fraction. The influences of volume fraction and distribution of the precipitate on winding and cutting mechanisms are analyzed comprehensively. The dislocation winding behavior, hindered twin boundaries deformation, and the adjacent precipitates connection control the precipitate strengthening mechanisms. A dislocation-based theoretical model is developed to forecast the size-dependent flow stress of nanotwinned metals with nano-precipitates, in which the Orowan bypass mechanism and the dislocation pile-up behaviors are involved. The relationship between the microstructural size and the flow stress of nanotwinned metallic materials with nano-precipitates are explored. The predictions for the flow stresses varied with the precipitate volume fraction are agreeable well with the results of MD simulation. The predicted maximum flow stresses and the corresponding critical volume fractions of nano-precipitates are sensitive to the microstructural sizes.

Abstract:Twins readily form during growth or deformation in metals of low stacking-fault energy. Fabrication of high-density growth nanotwins in high stacking-fault energy materials is technically challenging. We synthesize nanotwinned Ni foils with controlled twin patterns – pulsed electrodeposition produces conventional parallel nanotwins while direct current electrodeposition generates a new pattern of nanotwins in the parallelogram form. The parallelogram nanotwins confine dislocation motion in the cage of twin boundaries and lead to a superior strengthening effect in Ni.

Abstract:The superior strength-ductility combination in nanotwin (NT)-strengthened metals has provided a new potential for optimizing the mechanical properties of coarse-grained (CG) metals. In this paper computer simulations based on the mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity and the Johnson–Cook failure criterion have been carried out to uncover the critical factors that serve to provide this dual function. Our results indicate that both the distribution characteristics of the NT regions and the constitutive relations of the NT phase can have a significant impact on the strength and ductility of the CG Cu strengthened by the NT regions. In particular, twin spacing, distribution characteristics such as arrangement, shape and orientation, together with volume fraction of the NT regions, can all have significant effects. Along the way, we also discovered that microcrack initiation, coalescence and deflection constituted the entire failure process. Significant insights into the morphology of NT regions that could deliver superior strength and ductility combination for CG metals have been established.
Modeling Grain Size Dependent Optimal Twin Spacing for Achieving Ultimate High Strength and Related High Ductility in Nanotwinned Metals

Abstract:We have developed a mechanism-based plasticity model of nanotwinned metals to investigate the effect of twin spacing on strength, ductility and work hardening rate of such materials. In particular, the unique roles of dislocation pile-up zones near twin and grain boundaries, as well as twinning partial dislocations, in strengthening and work hardening are incorporated in the model. Competition between different local failure mechanisms associated with twin lamellae and/or grain boundaries is considered in evaluating the tensile ductility of nanotwinned metals. The present study provides a quantitative continuum plasticity model capable of describing the variations in strength, ductility and work hardening rate of nanotwinned metals with the twin spacing. For nanotwinned copper a grain size of 500nm, the model predicts a critical twin spacing for the maximum strength at 13nm, in excellent agreement with experimental observations. The critical twin spacing is found to be linearly proportional to the grain size, which is consistent with recent molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:Engineering nanostructures in metallic materials such as nanograins and nanotwins can promote plastic performance significantly. Nano/ultrafine-grained metals embedded in coarse grains called bimodal metals and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals have been proved to possess extensively improved yield strength whilst keeping good ductility. This paper will present an experimental study on nanostructured stainless steel prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with surface impacts of lower strain rate (10 s−1–103 s−1) and higher strain rate (104 s−1–105 s−1). Microstructure transition has been observed from the original γ-austenite coarse grains to α′-martensite nanograins with bimodal grain size distribution for lower strain rates to nanotwins in the ultrafine/coarse grained austenite phase for higher strain rates. Meanwhile, we will further address the mechanism-based plastic models to describe the yield strength, strain hardening and ductility in nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The proposed theoretical models can comprehensively describe the plastic deformation in these two kinds of nanostructured metals and excellent agreement is achieved between the numerical and experimental results. These models can be utilized to optimize the strength and ductility in nanostructured metals by controlling the size and distribution of nanostructures.

Abstract:This article focuses on in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization to explore twins in face-centered-cubic and body-centered-cubic monolithic metals, and their impact on the overall mechanical performance. Taking advantage of simultaneous nanomechanical deformation and nanoscale imaging using versatile in situ TEM tools, direct correlation of these unique microscopic defects with macroscopic mechanical performance becomes possible. This article summarizes recent evidence to support the mechanisms related to strengthening and plasticity in metals, including nanotwinned Cu, Ni, Al, Au, and others in bulk, thin film, and nanowire forms.

Abstract:The dependence of the strength of polycrystalline metals with hierarchical nanotwins on twin spacing and grain size is theoretically studied with a dislocation-based theoretical model, which describes the twin spacing-dependent flow stress. The analysis indicates that the flow stress first decreases with the decrease of twin spacing in primary twin lamellae, and then rises up to an ultimate value, while it is reinforced directly when reducing the size of the secondary twin lamellae. It is found that there exist optimal twin spacings in primary and secondary twin lamellae, as the function of the grain size, which yields a maximal strength in this hierarchical nanostructure. The present results provide a new perspective to design the microstructures for reinforcing the mechanical properties in nanostructural materials. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. In Situ TEM Study on the Nanomechanical Behaviors of Metallic Nanowires

Abstract:In this dissertation, the relationships between structure-mechanical properties-deformation mechanisms in face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) metallic nanowires have been studied using in situ TEM nanomechanical testing. It is well known that smaller is stronger and the widely-observed size effect is believed to arise from dislocation interactions inside nanocrystals. However, the interaction mechanisms in small-volume nanocrystals remain unexplored. Here, it was found that surface-nucleated dislocations can strongly interact inside the confined volume of Au nanowires, which led to a new type of dislocation-originated stacking fault tetrahedra (SFT), at variance to the widely-believed vacancy-originated SFT. The atomic-scale processes of nucleation, migration and annihilation of dislocation-originated SFT were revealed, shedding new light onto the strain hardening and size effect in small-volume materials. Although nanoscale twinning is an effective mean to enhance the strength of metals, twin-size effect on the deformation and failure of nanotwinned metals remains largely unexplored, especially at the minimum twin size. Here, a new type of size effect in nanotwinned Au nanowires is presented. As twin size reaches the angstrom-scale, Au nanowires exhibit a remarkable ductile-to-brittle transition that is governed by the heterogeneous-to-homogeneous dislocation nucleation transition. Quantitative measurements show that approaching such a nanotwin size limit gives rise to the ultra-high strength in Au nanowires, close to the ideal strength limit of perfect Au. Twinning is a fundamental deformation mode that competes against dislocation slip in crystals. At the nanoscale, higher stresses are required for plastic deformation than that in bulk, which favors twinning over dislocation slip. Indeed, deformation twinning has been well-documented in FCC nanocrystals. However, it remains unexplored in BCC nanostructures. Here, it shows that twinning is the dominant deformation mode in BCC-tungsten nanocrystals. A competition between twinning and dislocation slip occurs when changing the loading orientations, attributed to the defect growth controlled plasticity in BCC nanocrystals. Several important commonalities and differences in FCC and BCC nanocrystals deforming at nanoscale are further proposed. The results from this dissertation advance fundamental understanding of plastic deformation in a broad class of metals and alloys, and are of technological importance for degradation control and future design of ultra-strength nanomaterials.
Simulating Size and Volume Fraction-Dependent Strength and Ductility of Nanotwinned Composite Copper

Abstract:This work presents a micromechanical model to investigate mechanical properties of nanotwinned dual-phase copper, consisting of the coarse grained phase and the nanotwinned phase. Both strengthening mechanisms of nanotwinning and the contributions of nanovoids/microcracks have been taken into account in simulations. With the aid of modified mean-field approach, the stress-strain relationship is derived by combining the constitutive relations of the coarse grained phase and the nanotwinned phase. Numerical results show that the proposed model enables us to describe the mechanical properties of the nanotwinned composite copper, including both yield strength and ductility. The calculations based on the proposed model agree well with the results from finite element method (FEM). The predicted yield strength and ductility are sensitive to the twin spacing, grain size, as well as the volume fractions of phases in this composite copper. These results will benefit the optimization of both strength and ductility by controlling constituent fractions and the size of the microstructures in metallic materials.
Anisotropic Mechanical Properties and Deformation Mechanisms of Nanotwinned Ni and Ni Alloys With Extremely Fine Twin Boundary Spacings

Abstract:Introducing nanotwins with extremely fine twin boundary spacing (TBSs ≤ 10 nm) in metals with high stacking fault energy (SFE) has posed a long-standing challenge, hindering an in-depth understanding of their strengthening mechanisms. Here, we synthesized a series of columnar-grained nanotwinned structures with extremely fine TBSs in Ni and Ni alloys with high SFEs, and systematically investigated their mechanical responses under various loading directions relative to the coherent twin boundaries (CTBs). Under the loading directions of 90° and 0°, contrary to the softening effect observed in nanotwinned metals with equiaxed grains, continuous strengthening was found to extend to the finest TBS of 1.9 nm in the columnar-grained nanotwinned Ni and Ni alloy. This resulted in an ultra-high strength of 4.3 and 3.8 GPa, respectively. Combined experimental and simulational studies were employed to investigate the mechanism for continuous strengthening. As the TBS decreased to a critical value (3-5 nm), the strengthening mechanism was revealed to transform from CTB obstructing dislocations to the dislocation starvation-dominated mechanism, which led to a shift in deformation behavior from homogeneous to localized plasticity. Distinct from the detwinning-induced softening effect, the dislocation-starvation mechanism resulted in continuous strengthening, with the yield strength following a power-law function concerning TBS. Additionally, our results illustrate that nanotwins deformed via significant detwinning at the loading direction of 45°, leading to strengthening that primarily depends mainly on the column width rather than TBS.

Abstract:Twin boundaries have been proven effective for strengthening metallic materials while maintaining plasticity. Al, however, has low twinning propensity due to its high stacking fault energy. Here we show, by using a small amount of Ni solutes, high-density twin boundaries and stacking faults in sputtered Al-Ni solid solution alloys. Density function theory calculations show that the Ni solute facilitates the formation of stacking faults and stabilizes nanotwins in Al-Ni solid solution alloys. In situ micropillar compression studies reveal a high flow stress (exceeding 1.7 GPa), comparable to high strength martensitic steels and Ni alloys. Furthermore, significant plasticity was observed in these nanotwinned Al-Ni alloy films due to the existence of high density twin boundaries and 9R phase.

Abstract:Microstructures dominate the mechanical properties of metals because of the interactions of dislocations and other defects. Hierarchical nanotwins (HNTs) in different orientations/orders are more effective in interacting with dislocations, which will enhance the mechanical properties of materials. However, the confirmation of high-order HNTs (>2) has not been formally established to fully explore the potential of mechanical property enhancement of HNT structured materials. In this work, HNTs up to five orders with sequential identification in pure silver (Ag) were fabricated by combining the techniques of surface mechanical attrition treatment and uniaxial pre-loading. The strength of this high-order HNT-structured Ag has been improved by over three times without sacrificing ductility. In addition, compared to other structures, the HNT structure can increase the limit of strength of the materials at high ductility. By performing in situ transmission electron microscopy, the HNT generation mechanism is revealed in real time, and the generation conditions of stable HNTs are established. Molecular dynamic simulations present the structure evolution details of HNTs at atomic scale, and the dislocation-based theory unveils the underlying mechanism. By using this generic approach, high-order HNT (≥5) structures can be achieved in crystalline materials.
Nanodomained Nickel Unite Nanocrystal Strength with Coarse-Grain Ductility

Abstract:Conventional metals are routinely hardened by grain refinement or by cold working with the expense of their ductility. Recent nanostructuring strategies have attempted to evade this strength versus ductility trade-off, but the paradox persists. It has never been possible to combine the strength reachable in nanocrystalline metals with the large uniform tensile elongation characteristic of coarse-grained metals. Here a defect engineering strategy on the nanoscale is architected to approach this ultimate combination. For Nickel, spread-out nanoscale domains (average 7 nm in diameter) were produced during electrodeposition, occupying only ~2.4% of the total volume. Yet the resulting Ni achieves a yield strength approaching 1.3 GPa, on par with the strength for nanocrystalline Ni with uniform grains. Simultaneously, the material exhibits a uniform elongation as large as ~30%, at the same level of ductile face-centered-cubic metals. Electron microscopy observations and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the nanoscale domains effectively block dislocations, akin to the role of precipitates for Orowan hardening. In the meantime, the abundant domain boundaries provide dislocation sources and trapping sites of running dislocations for dislocation multiplication and the ample space in the grain interior allows dislocation storage; a pronounced strain-hardening rate is therefore sustained to enable large uniform elongation.
High-Strength Nanotwinned Al Alloys with 9R Phase

Abstract:Light-weight aluminum (Al) alloys have widespread applications. However, most Al alloys have inherently low mechanical strength. Nanotwins can induce high strength and ductility in metallic materials. Yet, introducing high-density growth twins into Al remains difficult due to its ultrahigh stacking-fault energy. In this study, it is shown that incorporating merely several atomic percent of Fe solutes into Al enables the formation of nanotwinned (nt) columnar grains with high-density 9R phase in Al(Fe) solid solutions. The nt Al-Fe alloy coatings reach a maximum hardness of ≈5.5 GPa, one of the strongest binary Al alloys ever created. In situ uniaxial compressions show that the nt Al-Fe alloys populated with 9R phase have flow stress exceeding 1.5 GPa, comparable to high-strength steels. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that high strength and hardening ability of Al-Fe alloys arise mainly from the high-density 9R phase and nanoscale grain sizes.

Abstract:As one of the typical nanostructures, nanotwins (NTs) have been utilized to evade the trade-off between strength and ductility, which is also applicable to improve the mechanical properties of superalloys. However, the optimization capability of mechanical properties by tailoring NTs has encountered bottleneck for the reasons such as inverse Hall-Petch effect and anisotropic effect. Based on the experimental observation of a special distribution pattern of NTs and nano-precipitates (NPs) in superalloys, that is, NPs are located at the twin boundaries (TBs), our work aims to study the distinctive synergistic deformation mechanism between NTs and NPs, which could become a new microstructure design strategy to optimize the mechanical properties of superalloys. Specifically, molecular dynamic (MD) method was employed to unveil the synergistic deformation mechanism of NTs and NPs in a model Ni-based superalloy. As expected, the introduction of NPs onto TBs can inhibit dislocation motion along or parallel to TBs, despite the softening deformation mode of NTs is activated. Moreover, the existence of NPs onto TBs can greatly improve the strengthening efficiency of NTs by impeding twin thickening/thinning. On the other hand, both phase boundaries and NPs interior have obstructive effect on dislocation motion, which could also be beneficial for material strengthening. More interestingly, anti-phase boundary (APB) structure will form along with the dislocations cutting through NPs. Subsequently, the APB structure can act as channels for dislocation slip and dislocation nucleation site induced by a kind of TB confinement effect, which may effectively accommodate plastic deformation. Our research outcomes could be utilized to facilitate the development of high-performance superalloys via rational collaborative design of NTs and NPs.
Strong and ductile nanoscale Ti-1Fe dual-phase alloy via deformation twinning

Abstract:A nanoscale Ti-1Fe dual-phase alloy was fabricated by laser powder bed fusion. The microstructure, phase constituent, and tensile properties of this alloy were examined to understand the mechanisms of nanotwin formation and its deformation. The interfacial coherency between the α/α'-Ti and β-Ti phases, along with the abundance of dislocations at grain boundaries and the increased Schmid factor after deformation, effectively lowered the strain level needed to generate deformation twins. The resulting deformation twinning, grain refinement, and solid solution of Fe all contributed to the alloy's excellent room-temperature tensile strength of 1021.7±15.2 MPa and ductility of 13.4±0.8 %. This study provides a path towards the design of high-performance and economical titanium materials without using expensive alloying elements.

Enhanced strength-ductility synergy in an ultra-strong copper alloy via coherent nanoprecipitates and stress-induced twinning

Abstract:Deformation twins (DTs) and stacking faults (SFs) are rarely found in Cu-20Ni-20Mn alloy, which limits further strengthening of alloy. Here, we report ultra-strong Cu-20Ni-20Mn alloy prepared by introducing a high density of coherent nanoprecipitates. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of alloy can be largely enhanced to 1624.7 ± 14.7 MPa, while maintaining an acceptable elongation of 7.3 ± 0.5%. We find that the coherent nanoprecipitates contribute to an ultra-high true stress up to about 1740 MPa, which facilitate the formation of DTs. The strength and ductility improvement stems from the synergistic effect of dislocations, nanoprecipitates and DTs. The Cu-20Ni-20Mn alloy sheet exhibiting an unprecedented strength-ductility synergy has been prepared by a two-step rolling process. The ultrafine grain structure containing substantial deformation twins coupling with homogeneously distributed nano-coherent precipitates accounts for the superior mechanical properties.

Abstract:Simultaneously improving strength and ductility has been an attractive theme in materials science and engineering. Through designing nanostructures, it is possible to overcome the traditional trade-off between ductility and strength of materials. In this paper, we show that introducing superlattice intrinsic stacking faults in nickel aluminide (Ni3Al) can facilitate its strength and toughness. In comparison with twin boundaries, the enhancing effect of superlattice intrinsic stacking faults is more obvious. Most significantly, the yield strength of samples with superlattice intrinsic stacking faults is always superior to their single crystalline counterparts, indicating that the yield strength of single crystalline Ni3Al can be exceeded. These findings provide new insights into the nanostructural design of aerospace materials.

Abstract:Abstract Nanograined metals have the merit of high strength, but usually suffer from low work hardening capacity and poor thermal stability, causing premature failure and limiting their practical utilities. Here we report a “nanodispersion-in-nanograins” strategy to simultaneously strengthen and stabilize nanocrystalline metals such as copper and nickel. Our strategy relies on a uniform dispersion of extremely fine sized carbon nanoparticles (2.6 ± 1.2 nm) inside nanograins. The intragranular dispersion of nanoparticles not only elevates the strength of already-strong nanograins by 35%, but also activates multiple hardening mechanisms via dislocation-nanoparticle interactions, leading to improved work hardening and large tensile ductility. In addition, these finely dispersed nanoparticles result in substantially enhanced thermal stability and electrical conductivity in metal nanocomposites. Our results demonstrate the concurrent improvement of several mutually exclusive properties in metals including strength-ductility, strength-thermal stability, and strength-electrical conductivity, and thus represent a promising route to engineering high-performance nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Although nanoscale twinning is an effective means to enhance yield strength and tensile ductility in metals, nanotwinned metals generally fail well below their theoretical strength limit due to heterogeneous dislocation nucleation from boundaries or surface imperfections. Here we show that Au nanowires containing angstrom-scaled twins (0.7 nm in thickness) exhibit tensile strengths up to 3.12 GPa, near the ideal limit, with a remarkable ductile-to-brittle transition with decreasing twin size. This is opposite to the behaviour of metallic nanowires with lower-density twins reported thus far. Ultrahigh-density twins (twin thickness<2.8 nm) are shown to give rise to homogeneous dislocation nucleation and plastic shear localization, contrasting with the heterogeneous slip mechanism observed in single-crystalline or low-density-twinned nanowires. The twin size dependent dislocation nucleation and deformation represent a new type of size effect distinct from the sample size effects described previously.
