Abstract:Inspecting known maximal Condorcet domains on 4 variables classified by Tobias Dittrich we find that 9 out of 18 of them are created using a certain composition of smaller domains. In this paper we describe this composition. We give sufficient conditions for the composition of two Condorcet domain to be a maximal Condorcet domain.

Abstract:Fishburn's alternating scheme domains occupy a special place in the theory of Condorcet domains. Karpov (2023) generalised these domains and made an interesting observation proving that all of them are single-peaked on a circle. However, an important point that all generalised Fishburn domains are maximal Condorcet domain remained unproved. We fill this gap and suggest a new combinatorial interpretation of generalised Fishburn's domains which provide a constructive proof of single-peakedness of these domains on a circle. We show that classical single-peaked domains and single-dipped domains as well as Fishburn's alternating scheme domains belong to this family of domains while single-crossing domains do not.

Abstract:Several of the classical results in social choice theory demonstrate that in order for many voting systems to be well-behaved the set domain of individual preferences must satisfy some kind of restriction, such as being single-peaked on a political axis. As a consequence it becomes interesting to measure how diverse the preferences in a well-behaved domain can be.

Abstract:Given a nonempty set of voters and a nonempty set of candidates, we provide a characterization of preference domains over which the plurality rule is Condorcet consistent; these are preference domains over which it is possible to design a social choice function that always chooses a plurality winner and also respects the Condorcet criterion. We take into account the possibility that some voters abstain and that some candidates withdraw freely from the competition, just as in real elections. In the general case with at least five potential voters and at least three potential candidates, we show that being defined on a quasi-cyclic permutation domain is a necessary and sufficient condition for the plurality rule to be Condorcet consistent. As points of discussion, we also investigate on the probability that a Condorcet winner exists in an admissible profile over a cyclic permutation domain as well as the existence of an ideal preference domain on which all scoring rules are Condorcet consistent. On this latter issue, it turns out that only essentially top-trivial domains are left.

Abstract:A Condorcet winning set is a set of candidates such that no other candidate is preferred by at least half the voters over all members of the set. The Condorcet dimension, which is the minimum cardinality of a Condorcet winning set, is known to be at most logarithmic in the number of candidates. We study the case of elections where voters and candidates are located in a $2$-dimensional space with preferences based upon proximity voting. Our main result is that the Condorcet dimension is at most $3$, under both the Manhattan norm and the infinity norm, natural measures in electoral systems.

A combinatorial representation of Arrow's single-peaked domains

Abstract:The most studied class of Condorcet domains (acyclic sets of linear orders) is the class of peak-pit domains of maximal width. It has a number of combinatorial representations by such familiar combinatorial objects like rhombus tilings and arrangements of pseudolines. Arrow's single-peaked domains are peak-pit but do not have maximal width. We suggest how to represent them by means of generalised arrangements of pseudolines.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the class of bipartite peak-pit domains. This is a class of Condorcet domains which include both the classical single-peaked and single-dipped domains. Our class of domains can be used to model situations where some alternatives are ranked based on a most preferred location on a societal axis, and some are ranked based on a least preferred location. This makes it possible to model situations where agents have different rationales for their ranking depending on which of two subclasses of the alternatives one is considering belong to. The class of bipartite peak-pit domains includes most peak-pit domains for $n\leq 7$ alternatives, and the largest Condorcet domains for each $n\leq 8$. In order to study the maximum possible size of a bipartite peak-pit domain we introduce set-alternating schemes. This is a method for constructing well-structured peak-pit domains which are copious and connected. We show that domains based on these schemes always have size at least $2^{n-1}$ and some of them have sizes larger than the domains of Fishburn's alternating scheme. We show that the maximum domain size for sufficiently high $n$ exceeds $2.1973^n$. This improves the previous lower bound for peak-pit domains $2.1890^n$ from \cite{karpov2023constructing}, which was also the highest asymptotic lower bound for the size of the largest Condorcet domains.

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.
Composition of locally solid convergences

Abstract:We carry on a more detailed investigation of the composition of locally solid convergences as introduced in [BCTvdW24], as well as the corresponding notion of idempotency considered in [Bil23]. In particular, we study the interactions between these two concepts and various operations with convergences. We prove associativity of the composition and show that the adherence of an ideal with respect to an idempotent convergence is equal to its closure. Some results from [KT18] about unbounded modification of locally solid topologies are generalized to the level of locally solid idempotent convergences. A simple application of the composition allows us to answer a question from [BCTvdW24] about minimal Hausdorff locally solid convergences. We also show that the weakest Hausdorff locally solid convergence exists on an Archimedean vector lattice if and only if it is atomic.

Abstract:For a certain family of complete modular lattices, we prove a Jordan--Hölder--Scheier-like" theorem with no assumptions on cardinality or well-orderedness. This family includes both lattices which are both join- and meet-continuous, as well as the lattices of subobjects of any object in an abelian category satisfying properties related to Grothendieck's axioms (AB5) and (AB5*). We then give several examples of objects in abelian categories which satisfy these axioms, including pointwise finite-dimensional persistence modules, presheaves, and certain Prüfer modules. Moreover, we show that, over an arbitrary ring, the infinite product of isomorphic simple modules both fails to satisfy our axioms and admits at least two composition series with distinct cardinalities. We conclude by giving a lattice-theoretic proof that any object which is locally finitely generated and satisfies our axioms can be expressed as a direct sum of indecomposable subobjects. We conjecture that this decomposition is unique.

Abstract:A $n$-by-$n$ matrix is called totally positive ($TP$) if all its minors are positive and $TP_k$ if all of its $k$-by-$k$ submatrices are $TP$. For an arbitrary totally positive matrix or $TP_k$ matrix, we investigate if the $r$th compound ($1<r<n$) is in turn $TP$ or $TP_k$, and demonstrate a strong negative resolution in general. Focus is then shifted to Dodgson's algorithm for calculating the determinant of a generic matrix, and we analyze whether the associated condensed matrices are possibly totally positive or $TP_k$. We also show that all condensed matrices associated with a $TP$ Hankel matrix are $TP$.

Abstract:We study the composition of two set-valued functions defined on locally convex topological linear spaces. We assume that these functions map into certain complete lattices of sets that have been used to establish a conjugation theory for set-valued functions in the literature. Our main result is a formula for the conjugate of the composition in terms of the conjugates of the ingredient functions. As a special case, when the composition is proper and has further regularity, our formula yields a dual representation for the composition. The proof of the main result uses Lagrange duality and minimax theory in a nontrivial way.

Abstract:We study the number of atoms and maximal ideals in an atomic domain with finitely many atoms and no prime elements. We show in particular that for all $m,n \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ with $n \geq 3$ and $4 \leq m \leq \frac{n}{3}$ there is an atomic domain with precisely $n$ atoms, precisely $m$ maximal ideals and no prime elements. The proofs use both commutative algebra and additive number theory.

A formal characterization of discrete condensed objects

Abstract:Condensed mathematics, developed by Clausen and Scholze over the last few years, proposes a generalization of topology with better categorical properties. It replaces the concept of a topological space by that of a condensed set, which can be defined as a sheaf on a certain site of compact Hausdorff spaces. Since condensed sets are supposed to be a generalization of topological spaces, one would like to be able to study the notion of discreteness. There are various ways to define what it means for a condensed set to be discrete. In this paper we describe them, and prove that they are equivalent. The results have been fully formalized in the Lean proof assistant.

A heuristic search algorithm for discovering large Condorcet domains

Abstract:The study of large Condorcet domains (CD) has been a significant area of interest in voting theory. In this paper, our goal is to search for large CDs that are hitherto unknown. With a straightforward combinatorial definition, searching for large CDs is naturally suited for algorithmic optimisations. For each value of n>2, one can ask for the size of the largest CD, thus finding the largest CDs provides an important benchmark for heuristic-based combinatorial optimisation algorithms. Despite extensive research over the past three decades, the CD sizes identified in 1996 remain the best known for many values of n. When n>8, conducting an exhaustive search becomes computationally unfeasible, thereby prompting the use of heuristic methods. To address this, we developed a novel heuristic search algorithm in which a specially designed heuristic function, backed by a lookup database, directs the search towards promising branches in the search tree. Our algorithm found new large CDs of size 1082 (surpassing the previous record of 1069) for n=10, and 2349 (improving the previous 2324) for n=11. Notably, these newly discovered CDs exhibit characteristics distinct from those of known CDs.

Domain theory in univalent foundations I: Directed complete posets and Scott's $D_\infty$

Abstract:We develop domain theory in constructive and predicative univalent foundations (also known as homotopy type theory). That we work predicatively means that we do not assume Voevodsky's propositional resizing axioms. Our work is constructive in the sense that we do not rely on excluded middle or the axiom of (countable) choice. Domain theory studies so-called directed complete posets (dcpos) and Scott continuous maps between them and has applications in a variety of fields, such as programming language semantics, higher-type computability and topology. A common approach to deal with size issues in a predicative foundation is to work with information systems, abstract bases or formal topologies rather than dcpos, and approximable relations rather than Scott continuous functions. In our type-theoretic approach, we instead accept that dcpos may be large and work with type universes to account for this. A priori one might expect that iterative constructions of dcpos may result in a need for ever-increasing universes and are predicatively impossible. We show, through a careful tracking of type universe parameters, that such constructions can be carried out in a predicative setting. In particular, we give a predicative reconstruction of Scott's $D_\infty$ model of the untyped $\lambda$-calculus. Our work is formalised in the Agda proof assistant and its ability to infer universe levels has been invaluable for our purposes.

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

In this article we show a generalized fundamental identity for arbitrary Dedekind domains. As an application, we show that any Japanese Dedekind domain is already excellent.

Abstract:Our goal is to better understand the relationship between the polyhedron and the group associated with a fundamental domain in H^3. In this paper, we will study torsion-free groups and determine a formula for how many edge classes a given abstract polyhedron must have. We will use that result to classify all fundamental domains on the cube with torsion-free groups, including a discussion of the explicit groups associated to those domains. We will then turn to more general fundamental domains and prove a series of results about how properties of the group place restrictions on the edge classes in the quotient manifold. These results give insight into how the polyhedron and the group associated to a fundamental domain interact, as well as offering concrete tools to find fundamental domains.
