Abstract:The well-known fundamental identity in number theory expresses the degree of an extension of global fields in terms of local information. In this article we show a generalized fundamental identity for arbitrary Dedekind domains. As an application, we show that any Japanese Dedekind domain is already excellent.

Abstract:The literature on Dedekind sums is vast. In this expository paper we show that there is a common thread to many generalizations of Dedekind sums, namely through the study of lattice point enumeration of rational polytopes. In particular, there are some natural finite Fourier series which we call Fourier-Dedekind sums, and which form the building blocks of the number of partitions of an integer from a finite set of positive integers. This problem also goes by the name of the `coin exchange problem'. Dedekind sums have enjoyed a resurgence of interest recently, from such diverse fields as topology, number theory, and combinatorial geometry. The Fourier-Dedekind sums we study here include as special cases generalized Dedekind sums studied by Berndt, Carlitz, Grosswald, Knuth, Rademacher, and Zagier. Our interest in these sums stems from the appearance of Dedekind's and Zagier's sums in lattice point count formulas for polytopes. Using some simple generating functions, we show that generalized Dedekind sums are natural ingredients for such formulas. As immediate `geometric' corollaries to our formulas, we obtain and generalize reciprocity laws of Dedekind, Zagier, and Gessel. Finally, we prove a polynomial-time complexity result for Zagier's higher-dimensional Dedekind sums.

Abstract:Dedekind sums occur in the transformation behaviour of the logarithm of the Dedekind eta-function under substitutions from the modular group. In 1892, Dedekind showed a reciprocity relation for the Dedekind sums. Apostol generalized Dedekind sums by replacing the first Bernoulli function appearing in them by any Bernoulli functions and derived a reciprocity relation for the generalized Dedekind sums. In this paper, we consider poly-Dedekind sums which are obtained from the Dedekind sums by replacing the first Bernoulli function by any type 2 poly-Bernoulli functions of arbitrary indices and prove a reciprocity relation for the poly-Dedekind sums.

Abstract:Let $R=\oplus_{m\geq 0}R_m$ be a standard graded Noetherian domain over a field $R_0$ and $I\subseteq J$ be two graded ideals in $R$ such that $0<\mbox{height}\;I\leq \mbox{height}\;J <d$. Then we give a set of numerical characterizations of the integral dependence of $I$ and ${J}$ in terms of certain multiplicities. A novelty of the approach is that it does not involve localization and only requires checking computable and well-studied invariants. In particular, we show the following: let $S=R[Y]$, $\mathsf{I} = IS$ and $\mathsf{J} = JS$ and $\bf d$ be the maximum generating degree of both $I$ and $J$. Then the following statements are equivalent. (1) $\overline{I} = \overline{J}$. (2) $\varepsilon(I)=\varepsilon(J)$ and $e_i(R[It]) = e_i(R[Jt])$ for all $0\leq i <\dim(R/I)$. (3) $e\big(R[It]_{\Delta_{(c,1)}}\big) = e\big(R[Jt]_{\Delta_{(c,1)}}\big)$ and $e\big(S[\mathsf{I}t]_{\Delta_{(c,1)}}\big) = e\big(S[\mathsf{J}t]_{\Delta_{(c,1)}}\big)$ for some integer $c>{\bf d}$. The statement $(2)$ generalizes the classical result of Rees. The statement $(3)$ gives the integral dependence criteria in terms of the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicities of certain standard graded domains over $R_0$. As a consequence of $(3)$, we also get an equivalent statement in terms of (Teissier) mixed multiplicities. Apart from several well-established results, the proofs of these results use the theory of density functions which was developed recently by the authors.

Abstract:For a given number field $K$, we give a $\forall\exists\forall$-first order description of affine Darmon points over $\mathbb{P}^1_K$, and show that this can be improved to a $\forall\exists$-definition in a remarkable particular case. Darmon points, which are a geometric generalization of perfect powers, constitute a non-linear set-theoretical filtration between $K$ and its ring of $S$-integers, the latter of which can be defined with universal formulas, as has been progressively proven by Koenigsmann, Park, and Eisenträger & Morrison. We also show that our formulas are uniform with respect to all possible $S$, with a parameter-free uniformity, and we compute the number of quantifiers and a bound for the degree of the defining polynomial.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that a complete Noetherian local domain of mixed characteristic $p>0$ with perfect residue field has an integral extension that is an integrally closed, almost Cohen-Macaulay domain such that the Frobenius map is surjective modulo $p$. This result is seen as a mixed characteristic analogue of the fact that the perfect closure of a complete local domain in positive characteristic is almost Cohen-Macaulay. To this aim, we carry out a detailed study of decompletion of perfectoid rings and establish the Witt-perfect (decompleted) version of André's perfectoid Abhyankar's lemma and Riemann's extension theorem.

On the height of the universal abelian variety

Abstract:In this paper we extend the arithmetic intersection theory of adelic divisors on quasiprojective varieties developed by X. Yuan and S. W. Zhang to cover certain adelic arithmetic divisors that are not nef nor integrable. The key concept used in this extension is the relative finite energy introduced by T. Darvas, E. Di Nezza, and C. H. Lu. As an application we compute the arithmetic self-intersection number of the line bundle of Siegel-Jacobi forms on the universal abelian variety endowed with its invariant hermitian metric. The techniques developed in this paper can be applied in many other situations like mixed Shimura varieties or the moduli space of stable marked curves.

Abstract:This article investigates congruences of $\mathfrak{p}$-adic representations arising from effective $A$-motives defined over a global function field $K$. We give a criterion for two congruent $\mathfrak{p}$-adic representations coming from strongly semi-stable effective $A$-motives to be isomorphic up to semi-simplification when restricted to decomposition groups of suitable places of $K$. This is a function field analog of Ozeki-Taguchi's criterion for $\ell$-adic representations of number fields. Motivated by a non-existence conjecture on abelian varieties over number fields stated by Rasmussen and Tamagawa, we also show that there exist no strongly semi-stable effective $A$-motives with some constrained.

Abstract:We draw concrete consequences from our arithmetic duality for two-dimensional local rings with perfect residue field. These consequences include class field theory, Hasse principles for coverings and $K_{2}$ and a duality between divisor class groups and Brauer groups. To obtain these, we analyze the ind-pro-algebraic group structures on arithmetic cohomology obtained earlier and prove some finiteness properties about them.

Abstract:Our starting point is an observation in elementary number theory [10, Exercise 26, p. 17]: if a and b are positive integers such that each number in the sequence a, b 2 , a 3 , b 4 , ... divides the next, then a = b. Its proof depends only on Z being a unique factorization domain (UFD) whose units are 1, —1. Accordingly, we abstract and say that a (commutative integral) domain R satisfies (*) in case, whenever nonzero elements a and b in R are such that each element in the sequence a, b 2 , a 3 , b 4 , ... divides the next, then a and b are associates in R (that is, a = bu for some unit u of R). The main objective of this paper is the study of the class of domains satisfying (*).

Abstract:Extensive work has been done to determine necessary and sufficient conditions for a bijective correspondence of abelian extensions of number fields to force an isomorphism of the base fields. However, explicit examples of correspondences over non-isomorphic fields are rare. Integrally equivalent number fields admit an induced correspondence of abelian extensions. Studying this correspondence using idelic class field theory and linear algebra, we show that the corresponding extensions share features similar to those of arithmetically equivalent fields, and yet they are not generally weakly Kronecker equivalent. We also extend a group cohomological result of Arapura et. al. and present geometric and arithmetic applications.
