Abstract:We study a class of functional problems reducible to computing $f^{(n)}(x)$ for inputs $n$ and $x$, where $f$ is a polynomial-time bijection. As we prove, the definition is robust against variations in the type of reduction used in its definition, and in whether we require $f$ to have a polynomial-time inverse or to be computible by a reversible logic circuit. These problems are characterized by the complexity class $\mathsf{FP}^{\mathsf{PSPACE}}$, and include natural $\mathsf{FP}^{\mathsf{PSPACE}}$-complete problems in circuit complexity, cellular automata, graph algorithms, and the dynamical systems described by piecewise-linear transformations.

Abstract:A major open problem in computational complexity is the existence of a one-way function, namely a function from strings to strings which is computationally easy to compute but hard to invert. Levin (2023) formulated the notion of one-way functions from reals (infinite bit-sequences) to reals in terms of computability, and asked whether partial computable one-way functions exist. We give a strong positive answer using the hardness of the halting problem and exhibiting a total computable one-way function.

Abstract:We prove that if = ( A ,⋅) is a group computable in polynomial time (P-computable), then there exists a P-computable group = ( B ,∙) ≅ in which the operation x −1 is also P- computable. On the other hand, we show that if the center of a group A contains an element of infinite order, then under some additional assumptions, there exists a P-computable group in which the operation x − 1 is not primitive recursive. Also the following general fact in the theory of P-computable structures is stated: if is a P-computable structure and E ⊆ A 2 is a P-computable congruence on then the quotient structure is isomorphic to a P-computable structure.

Analytical lower bound on query complexity for transformations of unknown unitary operations

Abstract:Recent developments have revealed deterministic and exact protocols for performing complex conjugation, inversion, and transposition of a general $d$-dimensional unknown unitary operation using a finite number of queries to a black-box unitary operation. In this work, we establish analytical lower bounds for the query complexity of unitary inversion, transposition, and complex conjugation. Specifically, our lower bound of $d^2$ for unitary inversion demonstrates the asymptotic optimality of the deterministic exact inversion protocol, which operates with $O(d^2)$ queries. We introduce a novel framework utilizing differentiation to derive these lower bounds on query complexity for general differentiable functions $f: \mathrm{SU}(d)\to \mathrm{SU}(d)$. As a corollary, we prove that a catalytic protocol -- a new concept recently noted in the study of exact unitary inversion -- is impossible for unitary complex conjugation. Furthermore, we extend our framework to the probabilistic setting, where transformations must succeed with a certain probability, revealing a potential trade-off between the number of queries and the required success probability.

Abstract:A recognized trend of research investigates generalizations of the Hadamard's inversion theorem to functions that may fail to be differentiable. In this vein, the present paper explores some consequences of a recent result about the existence of global Lipschitz continuous inverse by translating its assumptions of metric nature in terms of nonsmooth analysis constructions. This exploration focuses on continuous, but possibly not locally Lipschitz mappings, acting in finite-dimensional Euclidean spaces. As a result, sufficient conditions for global invertibility are formulated by means of strict estimators, ∗ -difference of convex compacta and regular/basic coderivatives. These conditions qualify the global inverse as a Lipschitz continuous mapping and provide quantitative estimates of its Lipschitz constant in terms of the above constructions.

Abstract:Inversion of operators is a fundamental concept in data processing. Inversion of linear operators is well studied, supported by established theory. When an inverse either does not exist or is not unique, generalized inverses are used. Most notable is the Moore-Penrose inverse, widely used in physics, statistics, and various fields of engineering. This work investigates generalized inversion of nonlinear operators. We first address broadly the desired properties of generalized inverses, guided by the Moore-Penrose axioms. We define the notion for general sets, and then a refinement, termed pseudo-inverse, for normed spaces. We present conditions for existence and uniqueness of a pseudo-inverse and establish theoretical results investigating its properties, such as continuity, its value for operator compositions and projection operators, and others. Analytic expressions are given for the pseudo-inverse of some well-known, non-invertible, nonlinear operators, such as hard- or soft-thresholding and ReLU. We analyze a neural layer and discuss relations to wavelet thresholding. Next, the Drazin inverse, and a relaxation, are investigated for operators with equal domain and range. We present scenarios where inversion is expressible as a linear combination of forward applications of the operator. Such scenarios arise for classes of nonlinear operators with vanishing polynomials, similar to the minimal or characteristic polynomials for matrices. Inversion using forward applications may facilitate the development of new efficient algorithms for approximating generalized inversion of complex nonlinear operators.

Abstract:This Paper defines and explores solution to the problem of \emph{Inversion of a finite Sequence} over the binary field, that of finding a prefix element of the sequence which confirms with a \emph{Recurrence Relation} (RR) rule defined by a polynomial and satisfied by the sequence. The minimum number of variables (order) in a polynomial of a fixed degree defining RRs is termed as the \emph{Polynomial Complexity} of the sequence at that degree, while the minimum number of variables of such polynomials at a fixed degree which also result in a unique prefix to the sequence and maximum rank of the matrix of evaluation of its monomials, is called \emph{Polynomial Complexity of Inversion} at the chosen degree. Solutions of this problems discovers solutions to the problem of \emph{Local Inversion} of a map $F:\ftwo^n\rightarrow\ftwo^n$ at a point $y$ in $\ftwo^n$, that of solving for $x$ in $\ftwo^n$ from the equation $y=F(x)$. Local inversion of maps has important applications which provide value to this theory. In previous work it was shown that minimal order \emph{Linear Recurrence Relations} (LRR) satisfied by the sequence known as the \emph{Linear Complexity} (LC) of the sequence, gives a unique solution to the inversion when the sequence is a part of a periodic sequence. This paper explores extension of this theory for solving the inversion problem by considering \emph{Non-linear Recurrence Relations} defined by a polynomials of a fixed degree $>1$ and satisfied by the sequence. The minimal order of polynomials satisfied by a sequence is well known as non-linear complexity (defining a Feedback Shift Register of smallest order which determines the sequences by RRs) and called as \emph{Maximal Order Complexity} (MOC) of the sequence. However unlike the LC there is no unique polynomial recurrence relation at any degree.

One-Way Communication Complexity of Partial XOR Functions

Abstract:Boolean function $F(x,y)$ for $x,y \in \{0,1\}^n$ is an XOR function if $F(x,y)=f(x\oplus y)$ for some function $f$ on $n$ input bits, where $\oplus$ is a bit-wise XOR. XOR functions are relevant in communication complexity, partially for allowing Fourier analytic technique. For total XOR functions it is known that deterministic communication complexity of $F$ is closely related to parity decision tree complexity of $f$. Montanaro and Osbourne (2009) observed that one-sided communication complexity $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F)$ of $F$ is exactly equal to nonadaptive parity decision tree complexity $NADT^{\oplus}(f)$ of $f$. Hatami et al. (2018) showed that unrestricted communication complexity of $F$ is polynomially related to parity decision tree complexity of $f$. We initiate the studies of a similar connection for partial functions. We show that in case of one-sided communication complexity whether these measures are equal, depends on the number of undefined inputs of $f$. On the one hand, if $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F)=t$ and $f$ is undefined on at most $O(\frac{2^{n-t}}{\sqrt{n-t}})$, then $NADT^{\oplus}(f)=t$. On the other hand, for a wide range of values of $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F)$ and $NADT^{\oplus}(f)$ (from constant to $n-2$) we provide partial functions for which $D_{cc}^{\rightarrow}(F) < NADT^{\oplus}(f)$. In particular, we provide a function with an exponential gap between the two measures. Our separation results translate to the case of two-sided communication complexity as well, in particular showing that the result of Hatami et al. (2018) cannot be generalized to partial functions. Previous results for total functions heavily rely on Boolean Fourier analysis and the technique does not translate to partial functions. For the proofs of our results we build a linear algebraic framework instead. Separation results are proved through the reduction to covering codes.

Abstract:This paper investigates the complexity of real functions through proof techniques inspired by formal language theory. Productiveness, which is a stronger form of non-recursive enumerability, is employed to analyze the complexity of various problems related to real functions. Our work provides a deep reexamination of Hilbert's tenth problem and the equivalence to the identically 0 function problem, extending the undecidability results of these problems into the realm of productiveness. Additionally, we study the complexity of the equivalence to the identically 0 function problem over different domains. We then construct highly efficient many-one reductions to establish Rice-style theorems for the study of real functions. Specifically, we show that many predicates, including those related to continuity, differentiability, uniform continuity, right and left differentiability, semi-differentiability, and continuous differentiability, are as hard as the equivalence to the identically 0 function problem. Due to their high efficiency, these reductions preserve nearly any level of complexity, allowing us to address both complexity and productiveness results simultaneously. By demonstrating these results, which highlight a more nuanced and potentially more intriguing aspect of real function theory, we provide new insights into how various properties of real functions can be analyzed.

Abstract:The Stieltjes (or sometimes called the Cauchy) transform is a fundamental object associated with probability measures, corresponding to the generating function of the moments. In certain applications such as free probability it is essential to compute the inverses of the Stieltjes transform, which might be multivalued. This paper establishes conditions bounding the number of inverses based on properties of the measure which can be combined with contour integral-based root finding algorithms to rigorously compute all inverses.

Abstract:This paper defines a linear representation for nonlinear maps $F:\mathbb{F}^n\rightarrow\mathbb{F}^n$ where $\mathbb{F}$ is a finite field, in terms of matrices over $\mathbb{F}$. This linear representation of the map $F$ associates a unique number $N$ and a unique matrix $M$ in $\mathbb{F}^{N\times N}$, called the Linear Complexity and the Linear Representation of $F$ respectively, and shows that the compositional powers $F^{(k)}$ are represented by matrix powers $M^k$. It is shown that for a permutation map $F$ with representation $M$, the inverse map has the linear representation $M^{-1}$. This framework of representation is extended to a parameterized family of maps $F_{\lambda}(x): \mathbb{F} \to \mathbb{F}$, defined in terms of a parameter $\lambda \in \mathbb{F}$, leading to the definition of an analogous linear complexity of the map $F_{\lambda}(x)$, and a parameter-dependent matrix representation $M_\lambda$ defined over the univariate polynomial ring $\mathbb{F}[\lambda]$. Such a representation leads to the construction of a parametric inverse of such maps where the condition for invertibility is expressed through the unimodularity of this matrix representation $M_\lambda$. Apart from computing the compositional inverses of permutation polynomials, this linear representation is also used to compute the cycle structures of the permutation map. Lastly, this representation is extended to a representation of the cyclic group generated by a permutation map $F$, and to the group generated by a finite number of permutation maps over $\mathbb{F}$.

On the Two-sided Permutation Inversion Problem

Abstract:In the permutation inversion problem, the task is to find the preimage of some challenge value, given oracle access to the permutation. This is a fundamental problem in query complexity, and appears in many contexts, particularly cryptography. In this work, we examine the setting in which the oracle allows for quantum queries to both the forward and the inverse direction of the permutation -- except that the challenge value cannot be submitted to the latter. Within that setting, we consider two options for the inversion algorithm: whether it can get quantum advice about the permutation, and whether it must produce the entire preimage (search) or only the first bit (decision). We prove several theorems connecting the hardness of the resulting variations of the inversion problem, and establish a number of lower bounds. Our results indicate that, perhaps surprisingly, the inversion problem does not become significantly easier when the adversary is granted oracle access to the inverse, provided it cannot query the challenge itself.

Abstract:We identify two broad types of noninvertibilities in quantum dynamical maps, one necessarily associated with CP indivisibility and one not so. We study the production of (non-)Markovian, invertible maps by the process of mixing noninvertible Pauli maps, and quantify the fraction of the same. The memory kernel perspective appears to be less transparent on the issue of invertibility than the approaches based on maps or master equations. Here we consider a related and potentially helpful issue: the identification of criteria of parameterized families of maps leading to the existence of a well-defined semigroup limit.

Abstract:Classically, the theories of computation and computational complexity deal with discrete problems, for example over the integers, about graphs, etc.. On the other hand, most computational problems that arise in numerical analysis and scientific computation, in optimization theory and more recently in robotics and computational geometry have as natural domains the reals, or complex numbers. A variety of ad hoc methods and models have been employed to analyze complexity issues in this realm, but unlike the classical case, a natural and invariant theory has not yet emerged. One would like to develop theoretical foundations for a theory of computational complexity for numerical analysis and scientific computation that might embody some of the naturalness and strengths of the classical theory.

Abstract:We prove inverse theorems for the size of sumsets and the $L^q$ norms of convolutions in the discretized setting, extending to arbitrary dimension an earlier result of the author in the line. These results have applications to the dimensions of dynamical self-similar sets and measures, and to the higher dimensional fractal uncertainty principle. The proofs are based on a structure theorem for the entropy of convolution powers due to M.~Hochman.

Abstract:We continue the study of the approximate $k$-wise independence of random reversible circuits as permutations of $\{\pm1\}^n$. Our main result is the first construction of a natural class of random reversible circuits with a sublinear-in-$n$ dependence on depth. Our construction is motivated by considerations in practical cryptography and is somewhat inspired by the design of practical block ciphers, such as DES and AES. Previous constructions of He and O'Donnell [HO24], which were built with gate architectures on one-dimensional lattices, suffered from an inherent linear-in-$n$ dependence on depth. The main novelty of our circuit model is a gate architecture built on higher-dimensional lattices.
