Abstract:We identify two broad types of noninvertibilities in quantum dynamical maps, one necessarily associated with CP indivisibility and one not so. We study the production of (non-)Markovian, invertible maps by the process of mixing noninvertible Pauli maps, and quantify the fraction of the same. The memory kernel perspective appears to be less transparent on the issue of invertibility than the approaches based on maps or master equations. Here we consider a related and potentially helpful issue: the identification of criteria of parameterized families of maps leading to the existence of a well-defined semigroup limit.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problems of non - invertibility and non - Markovianity in quantum dynamical maps. Specifically, the authors aim to: 1. **Classify and understand non - invertibility**: Two different types of non - invertibility of quantum dynamical maps are identified in the paper. One is related to complete - positive (CP) non - separability, and the other is not. The physical origins of these two types and their relationship with non - Markovianity are the focus of the study. 2. **Study of mixed non - invertible Pauli maps**: The authors study the (non - ) Markovian, invertible maps generated by mixing non - invertible Pauli maps and quantify the proportions of these maps. In particular, they focus on the proportion of non - Markovian maps in the invertible maps obtained after convex combination of non - invertible Pauli maps. 3. **Memory - kernel perspective**: The paper also explores the transparency of the memory - kernel representation in dealing with non - invertibility problems and its relationship with mapping - or master - equation - based methods. Although the memory - kernel method appears less transparent in such problems, the authors attempt to understand the existence of parameterized mapping families and their semigroup limits from the perspective of the memory - kernel. ### Main contributions - **Classification of non - invertibility**: The concepts of "Type I" and "Type II" non - invertibility are proposed, and their physical backgrounds and characteristics are discussed in detail. - **Type I**: It is usually related to decoherence caused by interaction with an infinite - dimensional environment and is not necessarily accompanied by non - Markovianity. - **Type II**: It is usually related to information back - flow or recoherence caused by interaction with a finite - dimensional environment and marks the onset of non - Markovianity. - **Mixed non - invertible maps**: By convexly combining non - invertible Pauli maps, the proportion of non - Markovian maps in the generated invertible maps is studied, and specific quantification results are given. - **Memory - kernel analysis**: The memory - kernel description of non - invertible maps is explored, and the necessity of non - local elements in the kernel is demonstrated through specific examples. ### Formula summary - **Time - local master equation**: \[ \dot{\rho} = L(t)[\rho] = -i[H(t), \rho] + \sum_i \gamma_i(t) \left( J_i(t) \rho J_i^\dagger(t) - \frac{1}{2} \{J_i^\dagger(t) J_i(t), \rho\} \right) \] - **Decay rate formula**: \[ \gamma_3(t) = -\frac{\dot{\lambda}(t)}{\lambda(t)} = \frac{2 \dot{q}(t)}{1 - 2q(t)} \] - **Eigenvalue relationship of output maps**: \[ \tilde{E}(t)[\sigma_i] = \lambda_i(t) \sigma_i, \quad \lambda_i(t) = 1 - 2(1 - x_i) q(t) \] Through these studies, the authors provide new perspectives and tools for understanding and characterizing non - invertibility and non - Markovianity in open quantum systems.
