Abstract:All $\textrm{SL}(n)$ contravariant matrix-valued valuations on polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are completely classified without any continuity assumptions. Moreover, the symmetry assumption of matrices is removed. The general Lutwak-Yang-Zhang matrix turns out to be the only such valuation if $n\geq 4$, while a new function shows up in dimension three. In dimension two, the classification corresponds to the known case of $\textrm{SL}(2)$ equivariant matrix-valued valuations.

Abstract:Classifications of $\rm{SL}(n)$ covariant function-valued valuations are established with some assumptions of continuity. New valuations, for example, weighted moment functions, are introduced and our classifications give unified characterizations of the Laplace transform on convex bodies, $L_p$ moment bodies, $L_p$ difference bodies, and polar $L_p$ moment bodies ($L_{-p}$ intersection bodies). Using the new classifications, we also establish some Euler-type relations.

Abstract:The decomposition of the space of continuous and translation invariant valuations into a sum of SO(n) irreducible subspaces is obtained. A reformulation of this result in terms of a Hadwiger type theorem for continuous translation invariant and SO(n)-equivariant tensor valuations is also given. As an application, symmetry properties of rigid motion invariant and homogeneous bivaluations are established and then used to prove new inequalities of Brunn-Minkowski type for convex body valued valuations.

Abstract:We first prove that the Legendre transform is the only continuous and $\mathrm{SL}(n)$ contravariant valuation that behaves as a conjugation of two important translations on super-coercive, lower semi-continuous, and convex functions. Then we turn to a similar setting on log-concave functions and find characterizations of not merely the duality transform but also the Laplace transform on log-concave functions. With the notion of dual valuation, we also obtain characterizations of the identity transform on finite convex functions and positive log-concave functions.

This complements and expands several recent works about valuations on function spaces, including $L_p(\mu)$, Orlicz spaces and spaces $C(K)$ of continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space. Abstract:We study $2\times 2$ matrices over noncommutative rings with anti-involution, with a special focus on the symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_2(\mathcal{A},\sigma)$. We define traces and determinants of such matrices and use them to prove a Cayley Hamilton identity and trace relations which generalize well known relations for elements of $\mathrm{SL}_2(R)$ over a commutative ring. We compare the structure of elements of $\mathrm{Sp}_2(\mathcal{A},\sigma)$ with Manin matrices over general noncommutative rings; this naturally leads to a quantization $\mathrm{Sp}_2(\mathcal{A},\sigma)_q$. In contrast to the usual definition of the quantum group as a deformation of the ring of matrix functions on $\mathrm{SL}_2(R)$, this quantization produces a group of matrices over a new noncommutative ring with involution. We finish the comparison by constructing a generalization of a Hopf algebra structure on the noncommutative ring of matrix functions of our quantum group. Finally, we use the noncommutative surface-type cluster algebras of Berenstein and Retakh to give a geometric interpretation of our Hopf algebra structure and to produce noncommutative generalizations of Markov numbers over many rings with involution including the complex numbers, dual numbers, matrix rings, and group rings.

Abstract:We consider the Whitney problem for valuations: does a smooth $j$-homogeneous translation-invariant valuation on $\mathbb R^n$ exist that has given restrictions to a fixed family $S$ of linear subspaces? A necessary condition is compatibility: the given valuations must coincide on intersections. We show that for $S=\mathrm{Gr}_r(\mathbb R^n)$, the grassmannian of $r$-planes, this condition becomes sufficient once $r\geq j+2$. This complements the Klain and Schneider uniqueness theorems with an existence statement, and provides a recursive description of the image of the cosine transform. Informally speaking, we show that the transition from densities to valuations is localized to codimension $2$. We then look for conditions on $S$ when compatibility is also sufficient for extensibility, in two distinct regimes: finite arrangements of subspaces, and compact submanifolds of the grassmannian. In both regimes we find unexpected flexibility. As a consequence of the submanifold regime, we prove a Nash-type theorem for valuations on compact manifolds, from which in turn we deduce the existence of Crofton formulas for all smooth valuations on manifolds. As an intermediate step of independent interest, we construct Crofton formulas for all odd translation-invariant valuations.

Abstract:We show that every continuous and dually translation invariant valuation on the space of Lipschitz functions on the unit sphere of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge2$, can be decomposed uniquely into a sum of homogeneous valuations of degree $0$, $1$ and $2$. In particular, there does not exist any non-trivial, continuous and dually translation invariant valuation which is homogeneous of degree $3$ or higher.
