Abstract:All $\textrm{SL}(n)$ contravariant matrix-valued valuations on polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are completely classified without any continuity assumptions. Moreover, the symmetry assumption of matrices is removed. The general Lutwak-Yang-Zhang matrix turns out to be the only such valuation if $n\geq 4$, while a new function shows up in dimension three. In dimension two, the classification corresponds to the known case of $\textrm{SL}(2)$ equivariant matrix-valued valuations.

Abstract:Classifications of $\rm{SL}(n)$ covariant function-valued valuations are established with some assumptions of continuity. New valuations, for example, weighted moment functions, are introduced and our classifications give unified characterizations of the Laplace transform on convex bodies, $L_p$ moment bodies, $L_p$ difference bodies, and polar $L_p$ moment bodies ($L_{-p}$ intersection bodies). Using the new classifications, we also establish some Euler-type relations.

Abstract:We first prove that the Legendre transform is the only continuous and $\mathrm{SL}(n)$ contravariant valuation that behaves as a conjugation of two important translations on super-coercive, lower semi-continuous, and convex functions. Then we turn to a similar setting on log-concave functions and find characterizations of not merely the duality transform but also the Laplace transform on log-concave functions. With the notion of dual valuation, we also obtain characterizations of the identity transform on finite convex functions and positive log-concave functions.

Abstract:We classify all continuous valuations on the space of finite convex functions with values in the same space which are dually epi-translation-invariant and equi- resp. contravariant with respect to volume-preserving linear maps. We thereby identify the valuation-theoretic functional analogues of the difference body map and show that there does not exist a generalization of the projection body map in this setting. This non-existence result is shown to also hold true for valuations with values in the space of convex functions that are finite in a neighborhood of the origin.

Abstract:A string polytope is a rational convex polytope whose lattice points parametrize a highest weight crystal basis, which is obtained from a string cone by explicit affine inequalities depending on a highest weight. It also inherits geometric information of a flag variety such as toric degenerations, Newton-Okounkov bodies, mirror symmetry, Schubert calculus, and so on. In this paper, we study combinatorial properties of string polytopes in types $B$ and $C$ by giving an explicit description of string cones in these types which is analogous to Gleizer-Postnikov's description of string cones in type $A$. As an application, we characterize string polytopes in type $C$ which are unimodularly equivalent to the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope in type $C$ for a specific highest weight.

Abstract:We investigate subgroups of SL (n,Z) which preserve an open nondegenerate convex cone in real n-space and admit in that cone as fundamental domain a polyhedral cone of which some faces are allowed to lie on the boundary. Abstract:We show that every continuous and dually translation invariant valuation on the space of Lipschitz functions on the unit sphere of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge2$, can be decomposed uniquely into a sum of homogeneous valuations of degree $0$, $1$ and $2$. In particular, there does not exist any non-trivial, continuous and dually translation invariant valuation which is homogeneous of degree $3$ or higher. For the space of those of degree $0$, $1$ and $2$ we provide a description of a dense subspace.

Abstract:We consider the Whitney problem for valuations: does a smooth $j$-homogeneous translation-invariant valuation on $\mathbb R^n$ exist that has given restrictions to a fixed family $S$ of linear subspaces? A necessary condition is compatibility: the given valuations must coincide on intersections. We show that for $S=\mathrm{Gr}_r(\mathbb R^n)$, the grassmannian of $r$-planes, this condition becomes sufficient once $r\geq j+2$. This complements the Klain and Schneider uniqueness theorems with an existence statement, and provides a recursive description of the image of the cosine transform. Informally speaking, we show that the transition from densities to valuations is localized to codimension $2$. We then look for conditions on $S$ when compatibility is also sufficient for extensibility, in two distinct regimes: finite arrangements of subspaces, and compact submanifolds of the grassmannian. In both regimes we find unexpected flexibility. As a consequence of the submanifold regime, we prove a Nash-type theorem for valuations on compact manifolds, from which in turn we deduce the existence of Crofton formulas for all smooth valuations on manifolds. As an intermediate step of independent interest, we construct Crofton formulas for all odd translation-invariant valuations.

Abstract:We study dually epi-translation invariant valuations on cones of convex functions containing the space of finite-valued convex functions. The existence of a homogeneous decomposition is used to associate a distribution to every valuation of this type similar to the Goodey-Weil embedding for translation invariant valuations on convex bodies. The relation between the valuation and its associated distribution is used to establish a notion of support for valuations. As an application, we show that there are no $\mathrm{SL}(n)$ or translation invariant valuations except constant valuations in this class and we discuss which valuations on finite-valued convex functions can be extended to larger cones. In addition, we examine some topological properties of spaces of valuations with compact support.

Abstract:In this note, we classify the conjugacy classes of $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$, the universal covering group of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$. For any non-central element $\alpha \in \widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R})$, we show that its conjugacy class may be determined by three invariants: (i) Trace: the trace (valued in the set of positive real numbers $\mathbb{R}_{+}$) of its image $\overline{\alpha}$ in $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$; (ii) Direction type: the sign behavior of the induced self-homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}$ determined by the lifting $\widetilde{\mathrm{SL}}_2(\mathbb{R}) \curvearrowright \mathbb{R}$ of the action $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R}) \curvearrowright \mathbb{S}^{1}$; (iii) The function $\ell^{\sharp}$: a conjugacy invariant length function introduced by S. Abstract:The decomposition of the space of continuous and translation invariant valuations into a sum of SO(n) irreducible subspaces is obtained. A reformulation of this result in terms of a Hadwiger type theorem for continuous translation invariant and SO(n)-equivariant tensor valuations is also given. As an application, symmetry properties of rigid motion invariant and homogeneous bivaluations are established and then used to prove new inequalities of Brunn-Minkowski type for convex body valued valuations.

Abstract:We investigate the action of Alesker's Lefschetz operators on translation invariant valuations on convex bodies. For scalar valued valuations, we describe this action on the level of Klain-Schneider functions by a Radon type transform, generalizing a result by Schuster and Wannerer. In the case of rotationally equivariant Minkowski valuations, the Lefschetz operators act on the generating function as a convolution transform. We show that the convolution kernel satisfies a Legendre type differential equation, and thus, is a strictly positive function that is smooth up to one point.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a natural model for the realization space of a polytope up to projective equivalence which we call the slack realization space of the polytope. The model arises from the positive part of an algebraic variety determined by the slack ideal of the polytope. This is a saturated determinantal ideal that encodes the combinatorics of the polytope. We also derive a new model of the realization space of a polytope from the positive part of the variety of a related ideal. The slack ideal offers an effective computational framework for several classical questions about polytopes such as rational realizability, non-prescribability of faces, and realizability of combinatorial polytopes.
