Abstract:Finite element spaces by Whitney $k$-forms on cubical meshes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are presented. Based on the spaces, compatible discretizations to $H\Lambda^k$ problems are provided, and discrete de Rham complexes and commutative diagrams are constructed.

Abstract:The Whitney forms on a simplex $T$ admit high-order generalizations that have received a great deal of attention in numerical analysis. Less well-known are the shadow forms of Brasselet, Goresky, and MacPherson. These forms generalize the Whitney forms, but have rational coefficients, allowing singularities near the faces of $T$. Motivated by numerical problems that exhibit these kinds of singularities, we introduce degrees of freedom for the shadow $k$-forms that are well-suited for finite element implementations. In particular, we show that the degrees of freedom for the shadow forms are given by integration over the $k$-dimensional faces of the blow-up $\tilde T$ of the simplex $T$. Consequently, we obtain an isomorphism between the cohomology of the complex of shadow forms and the cellular cohomology of $\tilde T$, which vanishes except in degree zero. Additionally, we discover a surprising probabilistic interpretation of shadow forms in terms of Poisson processes. This perspective simplifies several proofs and gives a way of computing bases for the shadow forms using a straightforward combinatorial calculation.

We prove that the following inequality always hold onM n:$\left| {\bar \nabla h} \right|^2 \geqslant \frac{{3n^2 }}{{n + 2}}\left| {\nabla ^ \bot \vec H} \right|^2 $ whereh is the second fundamental form andH is the mean curvature of the submanifold. We classify all submanifolds which at every point realize the equality in the above inequality. As a direct consequence of our Theorem, we give, a new characterization of theWhitney spheres in a complex space form.

Abstract:Algebraic boundaries of convex semi-algebraic sets are closely related to polynomial optimization problems. Building upon Rainer Sinn's work, we refine the stratification of iterated singular loci to a Whitney (a) stratification, which gives a list of candidates of varieties whose dual is an irreducible component of the algebraic boundary of the dual convex body. We also present an algorithm based on Teissier's criterion to compute Whitney (a) stratifications, which employs conormal spaces and prime decomposition.

Abstract:The polycube-based hexahedralization methods are robust to generate all-hex meshes without internal singularities. They avoid the difficulty to control the global singularity structure for a valid hexahedralization in frame-field based methods. To thoroughly utilize this advantage, we propose to use a frame field without internal singularities to guide the polycube construction. Theoretically, our method extends the vector fields associated with the polycube from exact forms to closed forms, which are curl free everywhere but may be not globally integrable. The closed forms give additional degrees of freedom to deal with the topological structure of high-genus models, and also provide better initial axis alignment for subsequent polycube generation. We demonstrate the advantages of our method on various models, ranging from genus-zero models to high-genus ones, and from single-boundary models to multiple-boundary ones.

Abstract:The paper addresses the challenge of constructing conforming finite element spaces for the curl div operator in three dimensions. Tangential-normal continuity is introduced in order to develop distributional finite element curl div complexes. The spaces constructed are applied to discretize the quad curl problem, demonstrating optimal order of convergence. Furthermore, a hybridization technique is proposed, demonstrating its equivalence to nonconforming finite elements and weak Galerkin methods.

Abstract:We construct the nodal basis of $C^m$-$P_{k}^{(3)}$ ($k \ge 2^3m+1$) and $C^m$-$P_{k}^{(4)}$ ($k \ge 2^4m+1$) finite elements on 3D tetrahedral and 4D simplicial grids, respectively. $C^m$-$P_{k}^{(n)}$ stands for the space of globally $C^m$ ($m\ge1$) and locally piecewise $n$-dimensional polynomials of degree $k$ on $n$-dimensional simplicial grids. We prove the uni-solvency and the $C^m$ continuity of the constructed $C^m$-$P_{k}^{(3)}$ and $C^m$-$P_{k}^{(4)}$ finite element spaces. A computer code is provided which generates the index set for the nodal basis of $C^m$-$P_k^{(n)}$ finite elements on $n$-dimensional simplicial grids.

Abstract:In this paper, the first family of conforming finite element divdiv complexes on cuboid meshes is constructed. The complex exhibits exactness on a contractible domain in the sense that the kernel space of each successive discrete map is the range of the previous one. This allows for algebraic structure-preserving finite element discretization of both the biharmonic equation and the linearized Einstein–Bianchi system. The convergence of optimal order is established and validated through numerical examples.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce Crouzeix-Raviart elements of general polynomial order $k$ and spatial dimension $d\geq2$ for simplicial finite element meshes. We give explicit representations of the non-conforming basis functions and prove that the conforming companion space, i.e., the conforming finite element space of polynomial order $k$ is contained in the Crouzeix-Raviart space. We prove a direct sum decomposition of the Crouzeix-Raviart space into (a subspace of) the conforming companion space and the span of the non-conforming basis functions. Degrees of freedom are introduced which are bidual to the basis functions and give rise to the definition of a local approximation/interpolation operator. In two dimensions or for $k=1$, these freedoms can be split into simplex and $\left( d-1\right) $ dimensional facet integrals in such a way that, in a basis representation of Crouzeix-Raviart functions, all coefficients which belong to basis functions related to lower-dimensional faces in the mesh are determined by these facet integrals. It will also be shown that such a set of degrees of freedom does \textbf{not} exist in higher space dimension and $k>1$.

Abstract:Finite element de Rham complexes and finite element Stokes complexes with various smoothness in three dimensions are systematically constructed. First smooth scalar finite elements in three dimensions are derived through a non-overlapping decomposition of the simplicial lattice. Based on the smooth scalar finite elements, both H(div)-conforming finite elements and H(curl)-conforming finite elements with various smoothness are devised, which induce the finite element de Rham complexes with various smoothness and the associated commutative diagrams. The div stability is established for the H(div)-conforming finite elements, and the exactness of these finite element complexes.

A new class of discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary

Abstract:We introduce a new class of discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary, which have nice interpolations in 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry. Then we prove the global rigidity of the new discrete conformal structures using variational principles, which is a complement of Guo-Luo's rigidity of the discrete conformal structures and Guo's rigidity of vertex scaling on surface with boundary. As a result, new convexities of the volume of generalized hyperbolic pyramids with right-angled hyperbolic hexagonal bases are obtained. Motivated by Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flow and Luo's combinatorial Yamabe flow on closed surfaces, we further introduce combinatorial Ricci flow and combinatorial Calabi flows to deform the new discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary. The basic properties of these combinatorial curvature flows are established. These combinatorial curvature flows provide effective algorithms for constructing hyperbolic metrics on surfaces with totally geodesic boundary components of prescribed lengths.

Abstract:This tract has two purposes: to show what is known about the n-dimensional unit cubes and to demonstrate how Analysis, Algebra, Combinatorics, Graph Theory, Hyperbolic Geometry, Number Theory, can be applied to the study of them. The unit cubes, from any point of view, are among the most important and fascinating objects in an n-dimensional Euclidean space. However, our knowledge about them is still quite limited and many basic problems remain unsolved. In this Tract eight topics about the unit cubes are introduced: cross sections, projections, inscribed simplices, triangulations, 0/1 polytopes, Minkowski's conjecture, Furtwangler's conjecture, and Keller's conjecture. In particular the author demonstrates how deep analysis like log concave measure and the Brascamp-Lieb inequality can deal with the cross section problem, how Hyperbolic Geometry helps with the triangulation problem, how group rings can deal with Minkowski's conjecture and Furtwangler's conjecture, and how Graph Theory handles Keller's conjecture.

Abstract:We describe a new algorithm for computing Whitney stratifications of complex projective varieties. The main ingredients are (a) an algebraic criterion, due to Lê and Teissier, which reformulates Whitney regularity in terms of conormal spaces and maps, and (b) a new interpretation of this conormal criterion via ideal saturations, which can be practically implemented on a computer. We show that this algorithm improves upon the existing state of the art by several orders of magnitude, even for relatively small input varieties. En route, we introduce related algorithms for efficiently stratifying affine varieties, flags on a given variety, and algebraic maps.

Abstract:We construct smooth finite element de Rham complexes in two space dimensions. This leads to three families of curl-curl conforming finite elements, two of which contain two existing families. The simplest triangular and rectangular finite elements have only 6 and 8 degrees of freedom, respectively. Numerical experiments for each family demonstrate the convergence and efficiency of the elements for solving the quad-curl problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct, in a unified fashion, lower order finite element subspaces of spaces of symmetric tensors with square-integrable divergence on a domain in any dimension. These subspaces are essentially the symmetric H(div)-Pk (1=<k<=n) tensor spaces, enriched, for each n-1 dimensional simplex, by (n+1)n/2 H(div)-Pn+1 bubble functions when 1=< k<= n-1, and by (n-1)n/2 H(div)-P n+1 bubble functions when k= n. These spaces can be used to approximate the symmetric matrix field in a mixed formulation problem where the other variable is approximated by discontinuous piecewise Pk-1 polynomials. This in particular leads to first order mixed elements on simplicial grids with total degrees of freedom per element 18 plus 3 in 2D, 48 plus 6 in 3D. The previous record of the degrees of freedom of first order mixed elements is, 21 plus 3 in 2D, and 156 plus 6 in 3D, on simplicial grids. We also derive, in a unified way and without using any tools like differential forms, a family of auxiliary mixed finite elements in any dimension. One example in this family is the Raviart-Thomas elements in one dimension, the second example is the mixed finite elements for linear elasticity in two dimensions due to Arnold and Winther, the third example is the mixed finite elements for linear elasticity in three dimensions due to Arnold, Awanou and Winther.
