Abstract:In this paper we aim to review some works on the asymptotic behaviors of random partitions. The focus is upon two basic probability models— uniform partitions and Plancherel partitions. One of fundamental results is the existence of limit shapes, which corresponds to the classic law of large numbers. The fluctuations around the limit shape are also considered; the well-known Gumbel distribution, Tracy-Widom distribution and normal distribution will be used to describe the asymptotic fluctuations at the edge and in the bulk of the spectrum of random partitions. The technique used in asymptotic analysis is the so-called poissonization and depoissonization method, a peculiar conditioning argument. We are content with describing some basic facts and remarkable results; no complete proof is given.

Abstract:Finite element spaces by Whitney $k$-forms on cubical meshes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ are presented. Based on the spaces, compatible discretizations to $H\Lambda^k$ problems are provided, and discrete de Rham complexes and commutative diagrams are constructed.

Abstract:We study generalized quasiconformal mappings in the context of the inverse Poletsky inequality. We consider the local behavior and the boundary behavior of mappings with the inverse Poletsky inequality. In particular, we obtain logarithmic Hölder continuity for such classes of mappings.

Abstract:Algebraic boundaries of convex semi-algebraic sets are closely related to polynomial optimization problems. Building upon Rainer Sinn's work, we refine the stratification of iterated singular loci to a Whitney (a) stratification, which gives a list of candidates of varieties whose dual is an irreducible component of the algebraic boundary of the dual convex body. We also present an algorithm based on Teissier's criterion to compute Whitney (a) stratifications, which employs conormal spaces and prime decomposition.

Abstract:We describe a new algorithm for computing Whitney stratifications of complex projective varieties. The main ingredients are (a) an algebraic criterion, due to Lê and Teissier, which reformulates Whitney regularity in terms of conormal spaces and maps, and (b) a new interpretation of this conormal criterion via ideal saturations, which can be practically implemented on a computer. We show that this algorithm improves upon the existing state of the art by several orders of magnitude, even for relatively small input varieties. En route, we introduce related algorithms for efficiently stratifying affine varieties, flags on a given variety, and algebraic maps.

Blow-up Whitney forms, shadow forms, and Poisson processes

Abstract:The Whitney forms on a simplex $T$ admit high-order generalizations that have received a great deal of attention in numerical analysis. Less well-known are the shadow forms of Brasselet, Goresky, and MacPherson. These forms generalize the Whitney forms, but have rational coefficients, allowing singularities near the faces of $T$. Motivated by numerical problems that exhibit these kinds of singularities, we introduce degrees of freedom for the shadow $k$-forms that are well-suited for finite element implementations. In particular, we show that the degrees of freedom for the shadow forms are given by integration over the $k$-dimensional faces of the blow-up $\tilde T$ of the simplex $T$. Consequently, we obtain an isomorphism between the cohomology of the complex of shadow forms and the cellular cohomology of $\tilde T$, which vanishes except in degree zero. Additionally, we discover a surprising probabilistic interpretation of shadow forms in terms of Poisson processes. This perspective simplifies several proofs and gives a way of computing bases for the shadow forms using a straightforward combinatorial calculation.

Abstract: In this article, we study the properties of conjugacies between polynomial basins. For any conjugacy, there is a quasiconformal conjugacy in the same homotopy class minimizing the dilatation. We compute the precise value of the minimal dilatation. The quasiconformal conjugacy minimizing the dilatation is not unique in general. We give a necessary and sufficient condition when the extremal map is unique.

Abstract:We consider quasi-polynomial spaces of differential forms defined as weighted (with a positive weight) spaces of differential forms with polynomial coefficients. We show that the unisolvent set of functionals for such spaces on a simplex in any spatial dimension is the same as the set of such functionals used for the polynomial spaces. The analysis in the quasi-polynomial spaces, however, is not standard and requires a novel approach. We are able to prove our results without the use of Stokes' Theorem, which is the standard tool in showing the unisolvence of functionals in polynomial spaces of differential forms. These new results provide tools for studying exponentially-fitted discretizations stable for general convection-diffusion problems in Hilbert differential complexes.

Abstract:Given a quasiconformal mapping $f:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb R^n$ with $n\ge2$, we show that (un-)boundedness of the composition operator ${\bf C}_f$ on the spaces $Q_{\alpha}(\mathbb R^n)$ depends on the index $\alpha$ and the degeneracy set of the Jacobian $J_f$. We establish sharp results in terms of the index $\alpha$ and the local/global self-similar Minkowski dimension of the degeneracy set of $J_f$. This gives a solution to [Problem 8.4, 3] and also reveals a completely new phenomenon, which is totally different from the known results for Sobolev, BMO, Triebel-Lizorkin and Besov spaces. Consequently, Tukia-Väisälä's quasiconformal extension $f:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb R^n$ of an arbitrary quasisymmetric mapping $g:\mathbb R^{n-p}\to \mathbb R^{n-p}$ is shown to preserve $Q_{\alpha} (\mathbb R^n)$ for any $(\alpha,p)\in (0,1)\times[2,n)\cup(0,1/2)\times\{1\}$. Moreover, $Q_{\alpha}(\mathbb R^n)$ is shown to be invariant under inversions for all $0<\alpha<1$.

Abstract:An important conjecture in additive combinatorics, number theory, and algebraic geometry posits that the partition rank and analytic rank of tensors are equal up to a constant, over any finite field. We prove the conjecture up to a logarithmic factor. Our proof is largely independent of previous work, utilizing recursively constructed polynomial identities and random walks on zero sets of polynomials. We also introduce a new, vector-valued notion of tensor rank (``local rank''), which serves as a bridge between partition and analytic rank, and which may be of independent interest as a tool for analyzing higher-degree polynomials.

Abstract:We provide a framework for relating certain q-series defined by sums over partitions to multiple zeta values. In particular, we introduce a space of polynomial functions on partitions for which the associated q-series are q-analogues of multiple zeta values. By explicitly describing the (regularized) multiple zeta values one obtains as $q\to 1$, we extend previous results known in this area. Using this together with the fact that other families of functions on partitions, such as shifted symmetric functions, are elements in our space will then give relations among (q-analogues of) multiple zeta values. Conversely, we will show that relations among multiple zeta values can be `lifted' to the world of functions on partitions, which provides new examples of functions where the associated q-series are quasimodular.

On $C^1$ Whitney extension theorem in Banach spaces

Abstract:Our note is a complement to recent articles \cite{JS1} (2011) and \cite{JS2} (2013) by M. Jiménez-Sevilla and L. Sánchez-González which generalise (the basic statement of) the classical Whitney extension theorem for $C^1$-smooth real functions on $\mathbb R^n$ to the case of real functions on $X$ (\cite{JS1}) and to the case of mappings from $X$ to $Y$ (\cite{JS2}) for some Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$. Since the proof from \cite{JS2} contains a serious flaw, we supply a different more transparent detailed proof under (probably) slightly stronger assumptions on $X$ and $Y$. Our proof gives also extensions results from special sets (e.g. Lipschitz submanifolds or closed convex bodies) under substantially weaker assumptions on $X$ and $Y$. Further, we observe that the mapping $F\in C^1(X;Y)$ which extends $f$ given on a closed set $A\subset X$ can be, in some cases, $C^\infty$-smooth (or $C^k$-smooth with $k>1$) on $X\setminus A$. Of course, also this improved result is weaker than Whitney's result (for $X=\mathbb R^n$, $Y=\mathbb R$) which asserts that $F$ is even analytic on $X\setminus A$. Further, following another Whitney's article and using the above results, we prove results on extensions of $C^1$-smooth mappings from open ("weakly") quasiconvex subsets of $X$. Following the above mentioned articles we also consider the question concerning the Lipschitz constant of $F$ if $f$ is a Lipschitz mapping.

Abstract:We say that a pair of nonnegative integer sequences $(\{a_k\}_{k\geq 0},\{b_k\}_{k\geq 0})$ is Whitney-realizable if there exists a poset $P$ for which (the absolute values) of the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are given by the numbers $a_k$ and $b_k$ respectively. The pair is said to be Whitney-dualizable if, in addition, there exists another poset $Q$ for which their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are instead given by $b_k$ and $a_k$ respectively. In this case, we say that $P$ and $Q$ are Whitney duals. We use results on Whitney duality, recently developed by the first two authors, to exhibit a family of sequences which allows for multiple realizations and Whitney-dual realizations. More precisely, we study edge labelings for the families of posets of pointed partitions $\Pi_n^{\bullet}$ and weighted partitions $\Pi_n^{w}$ which are associated to the operads $\mathcal{P}erm$ and $\mathcal{C}om^2$ respectively. The first author and Wachs proved that these two families of posets share the same pair of Whitney numbers. We find EW-labelings for $\Pi_n^{\bullet}$ and $\Pi_n^{w}$ and use them to show that they also share multiple nonisomorphic Whitney dual posets. In addition to EW-labelings, we also find two new EL-labelings for $\Pi_n^\bullet$ answering a question of Chapoton and Vallette. Using these EL-labelings of $\Pi_n^\bullet$, and an EL-labeling of $\Pi_n^w$ introduced by the first author and Wachs, we give combinatorial descriptions of bases for the operads $\mathcal{P}re\mathcal{L}ie, \mathcal{P}erm,$ and $\mathcal{C}om^2$. We also show that the bases for $\mathcal{P}erm$ and $\mathcal{C}om^2$ are PBW bases.

Abstract:We introduce a family of univariate polynomials indexed by integer partitions. At prime powers, they count the number of subspaces in a finite vector space that transform under a regular diagonal matrix in a specified manner. This enumeration formula is a combinatorial solution to a problem introduced by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey. At $1$, they count set partitions with specified block sizes. At $0$, they count standard tableaux of specified shape. At $-1$, they count standard shifted tableaux of a specified shape. These polynomials are generated by a new statistic on set partitions (called the interlacing number) as well as a polynomial statistic on standard tableaux. They allow us to express $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind as sums over standard tableaux and as sums over set partitions. For partitions whose parts are at most two, these polynomials are the non-zero entries of the Catalan triangle associated to the $q$-Hermite orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, when all parts are equal to two, they coincide with the polynomials defined by Touchard that enumerate chord diagrams by the number of crossings.
