Abstract:Going beyond the cohomological invariants attached to tiling spaces via inverse limit constructions, Clark and Hunton introduced shape group invariants, and showed these invariants in dimension one give new information. We show for dimensions greater than one that these groups are trivial. To do this, we show that the topological hull associated to a tiling in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ is the inverse limit of aspherical branched manifolds. The result follows from work of Gromov and others on complete geodesic spaces of nonpositive Alexandrov curvature, along with some simple observations.

Abstract:A manifold is a space that locally looks like the smooth space $\mathbf{R}^{n}$. It is usually also assumed that the underlying topological space of a manifold is hausdorff. However, there are natural examples of manifolds for which the hausdorff conditions fails. Some but not all of these examples contain bifurcate pairs of curves: pairs of curves that agree on some initial interval but disagree on a later interval. The first part of this note proves that a manifold $M$ is hausdorff if and only if (i) it contains no bifurcate curves and (ii) there is a hausdorff manifold $N$ with the same algebra of smooth real-valued functions as $M$; this confirms a conjecture of Wu and Weatherall. The second part of this note shows that a hausdorff manifold $N$ satisfying (ii) is a certain quotient of $M$.

Abstract:One of our main goals in this paper is to understand the behavior of limit sets of a diverging sequence of Schottky groups in the group of isometries of the N-dimensional hyperbolic space. This leads us to a generalization of a classical theorem of Bowen on variations of Hausdorff dimension of limit sets; and to a method of transforming a diverging sequence of Schottky groups into an almost converging sequence in the group of isometries of the infinite dimensional hyperbolic space. Our results apply in particular to an example of McMullen and generalize a previous work by Mehmeti and Dang.

Abstract:We review the motivation and fundamental properties of the Hausdorff dimension of metric spaces and illustrate this with a number of examples, some of which are expected and well-known. We also give examples where the Hausdorff dimension has some surprising properties: we construct a set $E\subset\C$ of positive planar measure and with dimension 2 such that each point in $E$ can be joined to $\infty$ by one or several curves in $\C$ such that all curves are disjoint from each other and from $E$, and so that their union has Hausdorff dimension 1. We can even arrange things so that every point in $\C$ which is not on one of these curves is in $E$. These examples have been discovered very recently; they arise quite naturally in the context of complex dynamics, more precisely in the iteration theory of simple maps such as $z\mapsto \pi\sin(z)$.

Abstract:Some properties of the (normed) dual Hom-functor $D$ and its iterations $D^n$ are exhibited. For instance: $D$ turns every canonical embedding (in the second dual space) into a retraction (of the third dual onto the first one); $D$ rises the countably infinite (algebraic) dimension only; $D$ does not change the finite quotient shape type. By means of that, the finite quotient shape classification of normed vectorial spaces is completely solved. As a consequence, two extension type theorems are derived.

Abstract:A reflection mapping is a singular holomorphic mapping obtained by restricting the quotient mapping of a complex reflection group. We study the analytic structure of double point spaces of reflection mappings. In the case where the image is a hypersurface, we obtain explicit equations for the double point space and for the image as well. In the case of surfaces in $\C^3$, this gives a very efficient method to compute the Milnor number and delta invariant of the double point curve.

Abstract:We find universal spaces for Alexandroff and finite spaces and explore some of its topological properties as well as their description as inverse limits of finite spaces and Alexandroff extensions. They can be used as a natural environment to describe shape properties of compact metric spaces.

Abstract:A simple condition is given that is sufficient to determine whether a measure that is absolutely continuous with respect to a Gaußian measure on the space of distributions is reflection positive. It readily generalises conventional lattice results to an abstract setting, enabling the construction of many reflection positive measures that are not supported on lattices.

Abstract:We establish shape holomorphy results for general weakly- and hyper-singular boundary integral operators arising from second-order partial differential equations in unbounded two-dimensional domains with multiple finite-length open arcs. After recasting the corresponding boundary value problems as boundary integral equations, we prove that their solutions depend holomorphically upon perturbations of the arcs' parametrizations. These results are key to prove the shape (domain) holomorphy of domain-to-solution maps associated to boundary integral equations appearing in uncertainty quantification, inverse problems and deep learning, to name a few applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we study shape functions depending on closed submanifolds. We prove a new structure theorem that establishes the general structure of the shape derivative for this type of shape function. As a special case we obtain the classical Hadamard-Zolésio structure theorem, but also the structure theorem for cracked sets can be recast into our framework. As an application we investigate several unconstrained shape functions arising from differential geometry and fracture mechanics.

Abstract:We consider a family of boundary integral operators supported on a collection of parametrically defined bounded Lipschitz boundaries. Consequently, the boundary integral operators themselves also depend on the parametric variables, thus leading to a parameter-to-operator map. The main result of this article is to establish the analytic or holomorphic dependence of said boundary integral operators upon the parametric variables, i.e., of the parameter-to-operator map. As a direct consequence we also establish holomorphic dependence of solutions to boundary integral equations, i.e.,~holomorphy of the parameter-to-solution map. To this end, we construct a holomorphic extension to complex-valued boundary deformations and investigate the \emph{complex} Fréchet differentiability of boundary integral operators with respect to each parametric variable. The established parametric holomorphy results have been identified as a key property to overcome the so-called curse of dimensionality in the approximation of parametric maps with distributed, high-dimensional inputs. To demonstrate the applicability of the derived results, we consider as a concrete example the sound-soft Helmholtz acoustic scattering problem and its frequency-robust boundary integral formulations. For this particular application, we explore the consequences of our results in reduced order modelling, Bayesian shape inversion, and the construction of efficient surrogates using artificial neural networks.

Abstract:Motivated by positivity-, monotonicity-, and convexity preserving differential equations, we introduce a definition of shape preserving operator semigroups and analyze their fundamental properties. In particular, we prove that the class of shape preserving semigroups is preserved by perturbations and taking limits. These results are applied to partial delay differential equations.

Abstract:We characterize two classical types of conformality of a holomorphic self-map of the unit disk at a boundary point - existence of a finite angular derivative in the sense of Carathéodory and the weaker property of angle preservation - in terms of the non-tangential asymptotic behaviour of the hyperbolic distortion of the map. These characterizations are given purely with reference to the intrinsic metric geometry of the unit disk. In particular, we relate the classical Julia-Wolff-Carathéodory theorem with the case of equality in the Schwarz-Pick lemma at the boundary. We also provide an operator-theoretic characterization of the existence of a finite angular derivative based on Hilbert space methods. As an application we study the backward dynamics of discrete dynamical systems induced by holomorphic self-maps, and characterize the regularity of the associated pre-models in terms of a Blaschke-type condition involving the hyperbolic distortion along regular backward orbits.

Abstract:We study the problem of conjugating a diffeomorphism of the interval to (positive) powers of itself. Although this is always possible for homeomorphisms, the smooth setting is rather interesting. Besides the obvious obstruction given by hyperbolic fixed points, several other aspects need to be considered. As concrete results we show that, in class $C^1$, if we restrict to the (closed) subset of diffeomorphisms having only parabolic fixed points, then the set of diffeomorphisms that are conjugate to their powers is dense, but its complement is generic. In higher regularity, however, the complementary set contains an open and dense set. The text is complemented with several remarks and results concerning distortion elements of the group of diffeomorphisms of the interval in several regularities.

Reflection length at infinity in hyperbolic reflection groups

Abstract:In a discrete group generated by hyperplane reflections in the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space, the reflection length of an element is the minimal number of hyperplane reflections in the group that suffices to factor the element. For a Coxeter group that arises in this way and does not split into a direct product of spherical and affine reflection groups, the reflection length is unbounded. The action of the Coxeter group induces a tessellation of the hyperbolic space. After fixing a fundamental domain, there exists a bijection between the tiles and the group elements. We describe certain points in the visual boundary of the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space for which every neighbourhood contains tiles of every reflection length. To prove this, we show that two disjoint hyperplanes in the $n$-dimensional hyperbolic space without common boundary points have a unique common perpendicular.
