Abstract:In his classical paper, Laurent Schwartz proved that on the real line, in every linear translation invariant space of continuous complex valued functions, which is closed under compact convergence the exponential monomials span a dense subspace. He studied so-called local ideals in the space of Fourier transforms, and his proof based on the observation that, on the one hand, these local ideals are completely determined by the exponential monomials in the space, and, on the other hand, these local ideals completely determine the space itself. On the other hand, Dimitri Gurevich gave counterexamples for Schwartz's theorem in higher dimension. In this paper we show that the ideas of localisation can be extended to general locally compact Abelian groups using abstract derivations on the Fourier algebra of compactly supported measures. Based on this method we present necessary and sufficient conditions for spectral synthesis for varieties on locally compact Abelian groups. Using localisation, in \cite{MR4789359} we proved that spectral synthesis holds on a locally compact Abelian group $G$ if and only if it holds on $G/B$, where $B$ is the closed subgroup of compact elements. This may lead to a complete characterisation of locally compact Abelian groups having spectral synthesis.

Abstract:In this paper we solve a long-standing problem which goes back to Laurent Schwartz's work on mean periodic functions. Namely, we completely characterise those locally compact Abelian groups having spectral synthesis. So far a characterisation theorem was available for discrete Abelian groups only. Here we use a kind of localisation concept for the ideals of the Fourier algebra of the underlying group. We show that localisability of ideals is equivalent to synthesizability. Based on this equivalence we show that if spectral synthesis holds on each extension of it by a locally compact Abelian group consisting of compact elements, and also on any extension to a direct sum with a copy of the integers. Then, using Schwartz's result and Gurevich's counterexamples we apply the structure theory of locally compact Abelian groups.

Abstract:Let G be a locally compact group, and let A(G) and B(G) denote its Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras. These algebras are dual objects of the group and measure algebras, L^1(G) and M(G), in a sense which generalizes the Pontryagin duality theorem on abelian groups. We wish to consider the amenability properties of A(G) and B(G) and compare them to such properties for L^1(G) and M(G). For us, ``amenability properties'' refers to amenability, weak amenability, and biflatness, as well as some properties which are more suited to special settings, such as the hyper-Tauberian property for semisimple commutative Banach algebras. We wish to emphasize that the theory of operator spaces and completely bounded maps plays an indispensable role when studying A(G) and B(G). We also show some applications of amenability theory to problems of complemented ideals and homomorphisms.

Abstract:We introduce and investigate using Hilbert modules the properties of the {\em Fourier algebra} $A(G)$ for a locally compact groupoid $G$. We establish a duality theorem for such groupoids in terms of multiplicative module maps. This includes as a special case the classical duality theorem for locally compact groups proved by P. Eymard.

Abstract:Let $X=G/H$ be a reductive homogeneous space with $H$ noncompact, endowed with a $G$-invariant pseudo-Riemannian structure. Let $L$ be a reductive subgroup of $G$ acting properly on $X$ and $\Gamma$ a torsion-free discrete subgroup of $L$. Under the assumption that the complexification $X_{\mathbb C}$ is $L_{\mathbb C}$-spherical, we prove an explicit correspondence between spectral analysis on the standard locally homogeneous space $X_{\Gamma}=\Gamma\backslash X$ and on $\Gamma\backslash L$ via branching laws for the restriction to $L$ of irreducible representations of $G$. In particular, we prove that the pseudo-Riemannian Laplacian on $X_{\Gamma}$ is essentially self-adjoint, and that it admits an infinite point spectrum when $X_{\Gamma}$ is compact or $\Gamma\subset L$ is arithmetic. The proof builds on structural results for invariant differential operators on spherical homogeneous spaces with overgroups.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to show that fundamental concepts in higher-order Fourier analysis can be nauturally extended to the non-commutative setting. We generalize Gowers norms to arbitrary compact non-commutative groups. On the structural side, we show that nilspace theory (the algebraic part of higher-order Fourier analysis) can be naturally extended to include all non-commutative groups. To this end, we introduce generalized nilspaces called "groupspaces" and demonstrate that they possess properties very similar to nilspaces. We study $k$-th order generalizations of groups that are special groupspaces called {\it k-step} groupspaces. One step groupspaces are groups. We show that $k$-step groupspaces admit the structure of an iterated principal bundle with structure groups $G_1,G_2,\dots,G_k$. A similar, but somewhat more technical statement holds for general groupspaces, with possibly infinitely many structure groups. Structure groups of groupspaces are in some sense analogous to higher homotopy groups. In particular we use a version of the Eckmann-Hilton argument from homotopy theory to show that $G_i$ is abelian for $i\geq 2$. Groupspaces also show some similarities with $n$-groups from higher category theory (also used in physics) but the exact relationship between these concepts is a subject of future research.

Abstract:In this paper we develop the basic homotopy theory of G-symmetric spectra (that is, symmetric spectra with a G-action) for a finite group G, as a model for equivariant stable homotopy with respect to a G-set universe. This model lies in between Mandell's equivariant symmetric spectra and the G-orthogonal spectra of Mandell and May and is Quillen equivalent to the two. We further discuss equivariant semistability, construct model structures on module, algebra and commutative algebra categories and describe the homotopical properties of the multiplicative norm in this context.

Spectral gap and character limits in arithmetic groups

Abstract:We establish vanishing results for limits of characters in various discrete groups, most notably irreducible lattices in higher rank semisimple Lie groups. As an application, we show that any sequence of finite-dimensional representations converges to the regular representation in the Fell topology. We achieve this by studying the geometry of the simplex of traces of discrete groups having Kazhdan's property (T) or its relative generalizations.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on how we can interpret the actions of the elements in the Gelfand spectrum of a weighted Fourier algebra on connected Lie groups. They can be viewed as evaluations on specific points of the complexification of the underlying Lie group by restricting to a particular dense subalgebra, which we call an analytic subalgebra. We first introduce an analytic subalgebra allowing a ``local" solution for general connected Lie groups. We will demonstrate that a ``global" solution is also possible for connected, simply connected and nilpotent Lie groups through a different choice of an analytic subalgebra. Finally, we examine the case of the $ax+b$-group as an example of a non-nilpotent, non-unimodular Lie group with a ``global" solution.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a locally compact group. We show how complemented ideals in the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of $G$ arise naturally from a class of thin sets known as Leinert sets. Moreover, we also present an explicit example of a closed ideal in $A(\mathbb{F}_{N})$, the free group on $N \ge 2$ generators, that is complemented in $A(\mathbb{F}_{N})$ but it is not completely complemented. Then by establishing an appropriate extension result for restriction algebras arising from Leinert sets, we show that any almost connected group $G$ for which every complemented ideal in $A(G)$ is also completely complemented must be amenable.

Abstract:Let $A(G)$ and $B(H)$ be the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras of locally compact groups $G$ and $H$, respectively. Ilie and Spronk have shown that continuous piecewise affine maps $\alpha: Y \subseteq H\rightarrow G$ induce completely bounded homomorphisms $\Phi:A(G)\rightarrow B(H)$, and that when $G$ is amenable, every completely bounded homomorphism arises in this way. This generalised work of Cohen in the abelian setting. We believe that there is a gap in a key lemma of the existing argument, which we do not see how to repair. We present here a different strategy to show the result, which instead of using topological arguments, is more combinatorial and makes use of measure theoretic ideas, following more closely the original ideas of Cohen.

Abstract:This paper continues the study of spectral synthesis and the topologies $\tau_{\infty}$ and $\tau_r$ on the ideal space of a Banach algebra, concentrating on the class of Banach $^*$-algebras, and in particular on $L^1$-group algebras. It is shown that if a group G is a finite extension of an abelian group then $\tau_r$ is Hausdorff on the ideal space of $L^1(G)$ if and only if $L^1(G)$ has spectral synthesis, which in turn is equivalent to $G$ being compact. The result is applied to nilpotent groups, [FD]$^-$-groups, and Moore groups. An example is given of a non-compact, non-abelian group G for which $L^1(G)$ has spectral synthesis. It is also shown that if G is a non-discrete group then $\tau_r$ is not Hausdorff on the ideal lattice of the Fourier algebra A(G).

On the structure of multivariate Gabor systems and a result on Gaussian Gabor frames

Abstract:We introduce an equivalence relation on the set of lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ such that equivalent lattices support identical structures of Gabor systems, up to unitary equivalence, a notion we define. These equivalence classes are parameterized by symplectic forms on $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ and they consist of lattices related by symplectic transformations. This implies that $2d^2 - d$ parameters suffice to describe the possible structures of Gabor systems over lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, as opposed to the $4d^2$ degrees of freedom in the choice of lattice. We also prove that (modulo a minor complication related to complex conjugation) symplectic transformations are the only linear transformations of the time-frequency plane which implement equivalences of this kind, thereby characterizing symplectic transformations as the structure-preserving transformations of the time-frequency plane in the context of Gabor analysis. In addition, we investigate the equivalence classes that have separable lattices as representatives and find that the parameter space in this case is $d^2$-dimensional. We provide an explicit example showing that non-separable lattices with irrational lattice points can behave exactly like separable and rational ones. This approach also allows us to formulate and prove a higher-dimensional variant of the Lyubarskii-Seip-Wallstén Theorem for Gaussian Gabor frames. This gives us, for a large class of lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ (including all symplectic ones), necessary and sufficient conditions for $d$-parameter families of Gaussians to generate Gabor frames.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop a structure theory for generalized spectral sequences, which are derived from chain complexes that are filtered over arbitrary partially ordered sets. Also, a more general construction method reminiscent of exact couples is studied, together with examples where they arise naturally. As for ordinary spectral sequences we will see differentials and group extensions, however the real power comes from the appearance of natural isomorphims between pages of differing indices. The constructions reveal finer invariants than ordinary spectral sequences, and they connect to other fields such as Fary functors and perverse sheaves. They are based on a natural index scheme, which allows us to obtain new results even in the standard case of Z-filtered chain complexes, e.g. a useful criterion for a product structure for Grothendieck's spectral sequences, and news paths to connect the first or second page to the limit. This turns out to yield the right framework for unifying several spectral sequences that one would usually apply one after another. Examples that we work out are successive Leray--Serre spectral sequences, the Adams--Novikov spectral sequence following the chromatic spectral sequence, successive Grothendieck spectral sequences, and successive Eilenberg--Moore spectral sequences.

On the local Fourier uniformity problem for small sets

Abstract:We consider vanishing properties of exponential sums of the Liouville function $\lambda$ of the form $$ \lim_{H\to\infty}\limsup_{X\to\infty}\frac{1}{\log X}\sum_{m\leq X}\frac{1}{m}\sup_{\alpha\in C}\bigg|\frac{1}{H}\sum_{h\leq H}\lambda(m+h)e^{2\pi ih\alpha}\bigg|=0, $$ where $C\subset\mathbb{T}$. The case $C=\mathbb{T}$ corresponds to the local $1$-Fourier uniformity conjecture of Tao, a central open problem in the study of multiplicative functions with far-reaching number-theoretic applications. We show that the above holds for any closed set $C\subset\mathbb{T}$ of zero Lebesgue measure. Moreover, we prove that extending this to any set $C$ with non-empty interior is equivalent to the $C=\mathbb{T}$ case, which shows that our results are essentially optimal without resolving the full conjecture. We also consider higher-order variants. We prove that if the linear phase $e^{2\pi ih\alpha}$ is replaced by a polynomial phase $e^{2\pi ih^t\alpha}$ for $t\geq 2$ then the statement remains true for any set $C$ of upper box-counting dimension $<1/t$. The statement also remains true if the supremum over linear phases is replaced with a supremum over all nilsequences coming form a compact countable ergodic subsets of any $t$-step nilpotent Lie group. Furthermore, we discuss the unweighted version of the local $1$-Fourier uniformity problem, showing its validity for a class of ``rigid'' sets (of full Hausdorff dimension) and proving a density result for all closed subsets of zero Lebesgue measure.

Abstract:In this note we define and study free global spectra: global spectra with non-trivial geometric fixed points only at the trivial group. We show that free global spectra often do not exist, and when they do, their homotopy groups satisfy strong divisibility conditions. As an application, we show that the universal free $G$-spectrum $EG_+$ does not admit a global refinement.

Abstract:We present a spectral sequence for free isometric Lie algebra actions (and consequently locally free isometric Lie group actions) which relates the de Rham cohomology of the manifold with the Lie algebra cohomology and basic cohomology (intuitively the cohomology of the orbit space). In the process of developing this sequence, we introduce a new description of the de Rham cohomology of manifolds with such actions which appears to be well suited to this and similar problems. Finally, we provide some simple applications generalizing the Wang long exact sequence to Lie algebra actions of low codimension.
