Abstract:The temperature-dependent transverse mechanical properties of single-walled nanotubes are studied using a molecular mechanics approach. The stretching and bond angle force constants describing the mechanical behavior of the sp(2) bonds are resolved in the temperature range between 0 and 1600 K, allowing to identify a temperature dependence of the nanotubes wall thickness. We observe a decrease of the stiffness properties (axial and shear Young's modulus) with increasing temperatures, and an augmentation of the transverse Poisson's ratio, with magnitudes depending on the chirality of the nanotube. Abstract:The Casimir interaction and torque are related phenomena originating from the exchange of electromagnetic excitations between objects. While the Casimir force exists between any types of objects, the materials or geometrical anisotropy drives the emergence of the Casimir torque. Here both phenomena are studied theoretically between dielectric films with immersed parallel single wall carbon nanotubes in the dilute limit with their chirality and collective electronic and optical response properties taken into account. It is found that the Casimir interaction is dominated by thermal fluctuations at sub-micron separations, while the torque is primarily determined by quantum mechanical effects. This peculiar quantum vs. thermal separation is attributed to the strong influence of reduced dimensionality and inherent anisotropy of the materials. Our study suggests that nanostructured anisotropic materials can serve as novel platforms to uncover new functionalities in ubiquitous Casimir phenomena.

Abstract:Anomalous heat transport in one-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanotubes and nanowires, is a widely debated problem in condensed matter and statistical physics, with contradicting pieces of evidence from experiments and simulations. Using a comprehensive modeling approach, comprised of lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulations, we proved that the infinite length limit of the thermal conductivity of a (10,0) single-wall carbon nanotube is finite but this limit is reached only for macroscopic lengths due to a thermal phonon mean free path of several millimeters. Our calculations showed that the extremely high thermal conductivity of this system at room temperature is dictated by quantum effects. Modal analysis showed that the divergent nature of thermal conductivity, observed in one-dimensional model systems, is suppressed in carbon nanotubes by anharmonic scattering channels provided by the flexural and optical modes with polarization in the plane orthogonal to the transport direction.

Abstract:We characterized the energy band dispersion near the Fermi level in single-walled carbon nanotubes using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Analysis of energy dependent standing wave oscillations, which result from quantum interference of electrons resonantly scattered by defects, yield a linear energy dispersion near EF, and indicate the importance of parity in scattering for armchair single-walled carbon nanotubes. Additionally, these data provide values of the tight-binding overlap integral and Fermi wavevector in good agreement with previous work, but indicate that the electron coherence length is substantially shortened.

Casimir effect between two spheres at small separations

Abstract:We consider the Casimir interaction between two spheres at zero and finite temperature, for both scalar fields and electromagnetic fields. Of particular interest is the asymptotic expansions of the Casimir free energy when the distance between the spheres is small. The scenario where one sphere is inside the other is discussed in detail. At zero temperature, we compute analytically the leading and the next-to-leading order terms from the functional determinant representation of the Casimir energy. As expected, the leading order term agrees with the proximity force approximation. The results for the next-to-leading order terms are new. In the limit where the radius of the outer sphere goes to infinity, the results for the sphere-plane geometry are reproduced. At finite temperature, the leading order term is computed and it is found to agree completely with the proximity force approximation in the medium and high temperature regions. For the scenario where two spheres are outside each other, analogous results are obtained. In the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions on both spheres, the next-to-leading order term of the zero temperature Casimir energy is found to agree with that computed recently using derivative expansion.

Abstract:We study the finite temperature Casimir interaction between two concentric cylinders. When the separation between the cylinders is much smaller than the radii of the cylinders, the asymptotic expansions of the Casimir interaction are derived. Both the low temperature and the high temperature regions are considered. The leading terms are found to agree with the proximity force approximations. The low temperature leading term of the temperature correction is also computed and it is found to be independent of the boundary conditions imposed on the larger cylinder.

Abstract:We performed studies of coherent electronic transport through a single walled carbon nanotube. In the calculations multiple scattering on the contacts and interference processes were taken into account. Conductance is a composition of contributions from different channels. We studied also spin--dependent transport in the system with ferromagnetic electrodes. The magnetoresistance is large and shows large oscillations, it can be even negative in some cases.

Abstract:The Casimir and Casimir–Polder interactions are investigated in a stack of equally spaced graphene layers. The optical response of the individual graphene is taken into account using gauge invariant components of the polarization tensor extended to the whole complex frequency plane. The planar symmetry for the electromagnetic boundary conditions is further used to obtain explicit forms for the Casimir energy stored in the stack and the Casimir–Polder energy between an atom above the stack. Our calculations show that these fluctuation induced interactions experience strong thermal effects due to the graphene Dirac-like energy spectrum. The spatial dispersion and temperature dependence in the optical response are also found to be important for enhancing the interactions especially at smaller separations. Analytical expressions for low and high temperature limits and their comparison with corresponding expressions for an infinitely conducting planar stack are further used to expand our understanding of Casimir and Casimir–Polder energies in Dirac materials. Our results may be useful to experimentalists as new ways to probe thermal effects at the nanoscale in such universal interactions.

Interference and Interaction in Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:We report equilibrium electric resistance R and tunneling spectroscopy dI/dV measurements obtained on single multiwall nanotubes contacted by four metallic Au fingers from above. At low temperature quantum interference phenomena dominate the magnetoresistance. The phase-coherence and elastic-scattering lengths are deduced. Because the latter is of order of the circumference of the nanotubes, transport is quasi-ballistic. This result is supported by a dI/dV spectrum which is in good agreement with the density-of-states (DOS) due to the one-dimensional subbands expected for a perfect single-wall tube. As a function of temperature T the resistance increases on decreasing T and saturates at approx. 1-10 K for all measured nanotubes. R(T) cannot be related to the energy-dependent DOS of graphene but is mainly caused by interaction and interference effects. On a relatively small voltage scale of order 10 meV, a pseudogap is observed in dI/dV which agrees with Luttinger-Liquid theories for nanotubes. Because we have used quantum diffusion based on Fermi-Liquid as well as Luttinger-Liquid theory in trying to understand our results, a large fraction of this paper is devoted to a careful discussion of all our results.

Abstract:The influence of a fullerene molecule trapped inside a single-wall carbon nanotube on resonant electron transport at low temperatures and strong polaronic coupling is theoretically discussed. Strong peak to peak fluctuations and anomalous temperature behavior of conductance amplitudes are predicted and investigated. The influence of the chiral properties of carbon nanotubes on transport is also studied.

Casimir-Polder Force on Atoms or Nanoparticles from the Gapped and Doped Graphene: Asymptotic Behavior at Large Separations

Abstract:The Casimir-Polder force acting on atoms and nanoparticles spaced at large separations from real graphene sheet possessing some energy gap and chemical potential is investigated in the framework of the Lifshitz theory. The reflection coefficients expressed via the polarization tensor of graphene found based on the first principles of thermal quantum field theory are used. It is shown that for graphene the separation distances starting from which the zero-frequency term of the Lifshitz formula contributes more than 99\% of the total Casimir-Polder force are less than the standard thermal length. According to our results, however, the classical limit for graphene, where the force becomes independent on the Planck constant, may be reached at much larger separations than the limit of large separations determined by the zero-frequency term of the Lifshitz formula depending on the values of the energy gap and chemical potential. The analytic asymptotic expressions for the zero-frequency term of the Lifshitz formula at large separations are derived. These asymptotic expressions agree up to 1\% with the results of numerical computations starting from some separation distance which increases with increasing energy gap and decreases with increasing chemical potential. Possible applications of the obtained results are discussed.

Effects of Disorder and Momentum Relaxation on the Intertube Transport of Incommensurate Carbon Nanotube Ropes and Multiwall Nanotubes

Abstract:We study theoretically the electrical transport between aligned carbon nanotubes in nanotube ropes, and between shells in multiwall carbon nanotubes. We focus on transport between two metallic nanotubes (or shells) of different chiralities with mismatched Fermi momenta and incommensurate periodicities. We perform numerical calculations of the transport properties of such systems within a tight-binding formalism. For clean (disorder-free) nanotubes the intertube transport is strongly suppressed as a result of momentum conservation. For clean nanotubes, the intertube transport is typically dominated by the loss of momentum conservation at the contacts. We discuss in detail the effects of disorder, which also breaks momentum conservation, and calculate the effects of localised scatterers of various types. We show that physically relevant disorder potentials lead to very dramatic enhancements of the intertube conductance. We show that recent experimental measurements of the intershell transport in multiwall nanotubes are consistent with our theoretical results for a model of short-ranged correlated disorder.

Abstract:The low-temperature asymptotic expressions for the Casimir interaction between two real metals described by the Leontovich surface impedance are obtained in the framework of thermal quantum field theory. It is shown that the Casimir entropy computed using the impedance of infrared optics vanishes in the limit of zero temperature. By contrast, the Casimir entropy computed using the impedance of the Drude model attains at zero temperature a positive value, which depends on the parameters of a system, i.e., the Nernst heat theorem is violated. Thus, the impedance of infrared optics withstands the thermodynamic test, whereas the impedance of the Drude model does not. We also perform a phenomenological analysis of the thermal Casimir force and of the radiative heat transfer through a vacuum gap between real metal plates. The characterization of a metal by means of the Leontovich impedance of the Drude model is shown to be inconsistent with experiment at separations of a few hundred nanometers. A modification of the impedance of infrared optics is suggested taking into account relaxation processes. The power of radiative heat transfer predicted from this impedance is several times less than previous predictions, due to different contributions from the transverse electric evanescent waves. The physical meaning of low frequencies in the Lifshitz formula is discussed. It is concluded that new measurements of radiative heat transfer are required to find the adequate description of a metal in the theory of electromagnetic fluctuations.

The Casimir Forces in a Single Conducting Cylindrical Cavity

Abstract:We want to study the Casimir effect for a single conducting microscopic cylindrical cavity. The mathematical technique is based on the Green function of the geometry of the inside of the cavity, and the integral regularization is based on the plasma frequency cutoff for real conductors. Using the symmetric electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor, in terms of four potential, the total Casimir energy for the inside of the Cavity is calculated. Neglecting the contribution of the external (outside of the cavity) Casimir energy based on the reason recently presented in [1], the forces experienced by the lateral surface of the cavity and its circular bases are calculated. The resulting expressions show that these forces are repulsive. The numerical computation is done for the real problem of a cavity with a basis of a radius in the same order of its height at the scale of 100 nanometers made of the best conducting materials already known.

Abstract:The nonequilibrium Casimir-Polder force between a nanoparticle and a graphene sheet kept at different temperatures is investigated in the framework of Dirac model using the formalism of the polarization tensor. It is shown that the force magnitude increases with increasing temperature of a graphene sheet. At larger separations an impact of nonequilibrium conditions on the force becomes smaller. According to our results, the attractive Casimir-Polder force vanishes at some definite nanoparticle-graphene separation and becomes repulsive at larger separations if the temperature of a graphene sheet is smaller than that of the environment. This effect may find applications both in fundamental investigations of graphene and for the control of forces in microdevices of bioelectronics.

Abstract:The Casimir-Polder force between atoms or nanoparticles and graphene-coated dielectric substrates is investigated in the region of large separations. Graphene coating with any value of the energy gap and chemical potential is described in the framework of the Dirac model using the formalism of the polarization tensor. It is shown that the Casimir-Polder force from a graphene-coated substrate reaches the limit of large separations at approximately 5.6 $\mu$m distance between an atom or a nanoparticle and graphene coating independently of the values of the energy gap and chemical potential. According to our results, however, the classical limit, where the Casimir-Polder force no longer depends on the Planck constant and the speed of light, may be attained at much larger separations depending on the values of the energy gap and chemical potential. In addition, we have found a simple analytic expression for the Casimir-Polder force from a graphene-coated substrate at large separations and determined the region of its applicability. It is demonstrated that the asymptotic results for the large-separation Casimir-Polder force from a graphene-coated substrate are in better agreement with the results of numerical computations for the graphene sheets with larger chemical potential and smaller energy gap. Possible applications of the obtained results in nanotechnology and bioelectronics are discussed.

On the spatial dependence of Casimir friction in graphene

Abstract:We study the spatial properties of the Casimir friction phenomenon for an atom moving at a non-relativistic constant velocity parallel to a planar graphene sheet. The coupling of the atom to the vacuum electromagnetic (EM) field is implemented by an electric dipole term, plus a Röntgen term. We study the fermion pair production, evaluating the angular dependence of the fermion emission probability. The phenomenon exhibits a threshold: it only exists when the speed of the sliding motion is larger than the Fermi velocity of the medium.

Abstract:We discuss the Casimir effect for massless scalar fields subject to the Dirichlet boundary conditions on the parallel plates at finite temperature in the presence of one fractal extra compactified dimension. We obtain the Casimir energy density with the help of the regularization of multiple zeta function with one arbitrary exponent and further the renormalized Casimir energy density involving the thermal corrections. It is found that when the temperature is sufficiently high, the sign of the Casimir energy remains negative no matter how great the scale dimension δ is within its allowed region. We derive and calculate the Casimir force between the parallel plates affected by the fractal additional compactified dimension and surrounding temperature. The stronger thermal influence leads the force to be stronger. The nature of the Casimir force keeps attractive.

Abstract:We consider the system of two parallel sheets of graphene which are moving with relative parallel velocity $\vec{v}$ and calculate the Casimir energy by using the scattering approach. The energy has real and imaginary parts. The real part contains a velocity contribution to the force perpendicular to the sheets. The imaginary part is related to a friction force parallel to the graphene sheets. We prove that the friction appears if the relative velocity becomes greater than the velocity of Fermi and if the modulo of reflection coefficient is greater than the one which is significant for virtual photon production. We analyze in detail the real contribution to the Casimir energy for two systems -- graphene/graphene and ideal metal/graphene. In the non-relativistic case $v \ll v_F$, the relative correction to the Casimir energy $(\mathcal{E}_v - \mathcal{E}_0)/\mathcal{E}_0$ is proportional to the $(v/c)^2$ (the maximum value is $0.0033$ for the gapeless case and $v=v_F$) for the first system, and it is zero up to the Fermi velocity $v = v_F$ for system ideal metal/graphene.

Abstract:The Casimir-Polder force between spherical nanoparticles and a graphene-coated silica plate is investigated in situations out of thermal equilibrium, i.e., with broken time-reversal symmetry. The response of graphene coating to the electromagnetic field is described on the basis of first principles of quantum electrodynamics at nonzero temperature using the formalism of the polarization tensor in the framework of the Dirac model. The nonequilibrium Casimir-Polder force is calculated as a function of the mass-gap parameter, chemical potential of graphene and temperature of the graphene-coated plate, which can be both higher and lower than that of the environment. It is shown that the force value increases with increasing chemical potential, and this increase is more pronounced when the temperature of a graphene-coated plate is lower than that of the environment. The nonequilibrium force also increases with increasing temperature of the graphene-coated plate. This increase is larger when the plate is hotter than the environment. The effect is revealed that the combined impact of the chemical potential $\mu$ and mass gap $\Delta$ of graphene coating depends on the relationship between $\Delta$ and 2$\mu$. If $2\mu>\Delta$ the magnitude of the nonequilibrium force between nanoparticles and a cooled graphene-coated plate becomes much larger than for a graphene coating with $\mu=0$. The physical reasons explaining this effect are elucidated. Possible applications of the obtained results are discussed.
