Abstract:We define an ordinalized version of Kleene's realizability interpretation of intuitionistic logic by replacing Turing machines with Koepke's ordinal Turing machines (OTMs), thus obtaining a notion of realizability applying to arbitrary statements in the language of set theory. We observe that every instance of the axioms of intuitionistic first-order logic are OTM-realizable and consider the question which axioms of Friedman's Intuitionistic Set Theory (IZF) and Aczel's Constructive Set Theory (CZF) are OTM-realizable.

Abstract:Combining the approaches made in works with Galeotti and Passmann, we define and study a notion of "almost sure" realizability with parameter-free ordinal Turing machines (OTMs). In particular, we show that, in contrast to the classical case, almost sure realizability differs from plain realizability, while closure under intuitionistic predicate logic and realizability of Kripke-Platek set theory continue to hold.

Abstract:Endowed with the binary operation of set addition, the family $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin},0}(\mathbb N)$ of all finite subsets of $\mathbb N$ containing $0$ forms a monoid, with the singleton $\{0\}$ as its neutral element. We show that the only non-trivial automorphism of $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin},0}(\mathbb N)$ is the involution $X \mapsto \max X - X$. The proof leverages ideas from additive number theory and proceeds through an unconventional induction on what we call the boxing dimension of a finite set of integers, that is, the smallest number of (discrete) intervals whose union is the set itself.

Abstract:We introduce two notions of effective reducibility for set-theoretical statements, based on computability with Ordinal Turing Machines (OTMs), one of which resembles Turing reducibility while the other is modelled after Weihrauch reducibility. We give sample applications by showing that certain (algebraic) constructions are not effective in the OTM-sense and considerung the effective equivalence of various versions of the axiom of choice.

A note on subvarieties of powers of OT-manifolds

Abstract:It is shown that the space of finite-to-finite holomorphic correspondences on an OT-manifold is discrete. When the OT-manifold has no proper infinite complex-analytic subsets, it then follows by known model-theoretic results that its cartesian powers have no interesting complex-analytic families of subvarieties. The methods of proof, which are similar to [Moosa, Moraru, and Toma ``An essentially saturated surface not of Kähler-type", {\em Bull. of the LMS}, 40(5):845--854, 2008], require studying finite unramified covers of OT-manifolds.

Abstract:We extend the concept of effective reducibility between statements of set theory with ordinal Turing machines (OTMs) explored in earlier work for $\Pi_{2}$-statements to statements of arbitrary quantifier complexity in prenex normal form and use this to compare various fundamental set-theoretical principles with respect to effective reducibility. This is a preliminary note, in which many arguments are merely sketched, soon to be replaced by a more elaborate version.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a numerical monoid, i.e., a submonoid of the additive monoid $(\mathbb N, +)$ of non-negative integers such that $\mathbb N \setminus S$ is finite. Endowed with the operation of set addition, the family of all finite subsets of $S$ containing $0$ is itself a monoid, which we denote by $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin}, 0}(S)$. We show that, if $S_1$ and $S_2$ are numerical monoids and $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin}, 0}(S_1)$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin}, 0}(S_2)$, then $S_1 = S_2$. (In fact, we establish a more general result, in which $S_1$ and $S_2$ are allowed to be subsets of the non-negative rational numbers that contain zero and are closed under addition.) This proves a conjecture of Bienvenu and Geroldinger.

Building one-time memories from isolated qubits

Abstract:One-time memories (OTM's) are simple tamper-resistant cryptographic devices, which can be used to implement one-time programs, a very general form of software protection and program obfuscation. Here we investigate the possibility of building OTM's using quantum mechanical devices. It is known that OTM's cannot exist in a fully-quantum world or in a fully-classical world. Instead, we propose a new model based on "isolated qubits" -- qubits that can only be accessed using local operations and classical communication (LOCC). This model combines a quantum resource (single-qubit measurements) with a classical restriction (on communication between qubits), and can be implemented using current technologies, such as nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond. In this model, we construct OTM's that are information-theoretically secure against one-pass LOCC adversaries that use 2-outcome measurements. Our construction resembles Wiesner's old idea of quantum conjugate coding, implemented using random error-correcting codes; our proof of security uses entropy chaining to bound the supremum of a suitable empirical process. In addition, we conjecture that our random codes can be replaced by some class of efficiently-decodable codes, to get computationally-efficient OTM's that are secure against computationally-bounded LOCC adversaries. In addition, we construct data-hiding states, which allow an LOCC sender to encode an (n-O(1))-bit messsage into n qubits, such that at most half of the message can be extracted by a one-pass LOCC receiver, but the whole message can be extracted by a general quantum receiver.

Abstract:An \omega-grammar is a formal grammar used to generate \omega-words (i.e. infinite length words), while an \omega-automaton is an automaton used to recognize \omega-words. This paper gives clean and uniform definitions for \omega-grammars and \omega-automata, provides a systematic study of the generative power of \omega-grammars with respect to \omega-automata, and presents a complete set of results for various types of \omega-grammars and acceptance modes. We use the tuple (\sigma,\rho,\pi) to denote various acceptance modes, where \sigma denotes that some designated elements should appear at least once or infinitely often, \rho denotes some binary relation between two sets, and \pi denotes normal or leftmost derivations. Technically, we propose (\sigma,\rho,\pi)-accepting \omega-grammars, and systematically study their relative generative power with respect to (\sigma,\rho)-accepting \omega-automata. We show how to construct some special forms of \omega-grammars, such as \epsilon-production-free \omega-grammars. We study the equivalence or inclusion relations between \omega$-grammars and \omega-automata by establishing the translation techniques. In particular, we show that, for some acceptance modes, the generative power of \omega-CFG is strictly weaker than \omega-PDA, and the generative power of \omega-CSG is equal to \omega-TM (rather than linear-bounded \omega-automata-like devices). Furthermore, we raise some remaining open problems for two of the acceptance modes.

The Power of Programs over Monoids in J and Threshold Dot-depth One Languages

Abstract:The model of programs over (finite) monoids, introduced by Barrington and Thérien, gives an interesting way to characterise the circuit complexity class $\mathsf{NC^1}$ and its subclasses and showcases deep connections with algebraic automata theory. In this article, we investigate the computational power of programs over monoids in $\mathbf{J}$, a small variety of finite aperiodic monoids. First, we give a fine hierarchy within the class of languages recognised by programs over monoids from $\mathbf{J}$, based on the length of programs but also some parametrisation of $\mathbf{J}$. Second, and most importantly, we make progress in understanding what regular languages can be recognised by programs over monoids in $\mathbf{J}$. To this end, we introduce a new class of restricted dot-depth one languages, threshold dot-depth one languages. We show that programs over monoids in $\mathbf{J}$ actually can recognise all languages from this class, using a non-trivial trick, and conjecture that threshold dot-depth one languages with additional positional modular counting suffice to characterise the regular languages recognised by programs over monoids in $\mathbf{J}$. Finally, using a result by J. C. Costa, we give an algebraic characterisation of threshold dot-depth one languages that supports that conjecture and is of independent interest.

Abstract:Recently, Liu, Moursi and Vanderwerff have introduced the class of super strongly nonexpansive mappings as a counterpart to operators which are maximally monotone and uniformly monotone. We give a quantitative study of these notions in the style of proof mining, providing a modulus of super strong nonexpansiveness, giving concrete examples of it and connecting it to moduli associated to uniform monotonicity. For the supercoercive case, we analyze the situation further, yielding a quantitative inconsistent feasibility result for this class (obtaining effective uniform rates of asymptotic regularity), a result which is also qualitatively new.

A Note on Output Length of One-Way State Generators and EFIs

Abstract:We study the output length of one-way state generators (OWSGs), their weaker variants, and EFIs. - Standard OWSGs. Recently, Cavalar et al. (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.08363" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.08363">arXiv:2312.08363</a>) give OWSGs with $m$-qubit outputs for any $m=\omega(\log \lambda)$, where $\lambda$ is the security parameter, and conjecture that there do not exist OWSGs with $O(\log \log \lambda)$-qubit outputs. We prove their conjecture in a stronger manner by showing that there do not exist OWSGs with $O(\log \lambda)$-qubit outputs. This means that their construction is optimal in terms of output length. - Inverse-polynomial-advantage OWSGs. Let $\epsilon$-OWSGs be a parameterized variant of OWSGs where a quantum polynomial-time adversary's advantage is at most $\epsilon$. For any constant $c\in \mathbb{N}$, we construct $\lambda^{-c}$-OWSGs with $((c+1)\log \lambda+O(1))$-qubit outputs assuming the existence of OWFs. We show that this is almost tight by proving that there do not exist $\lambda^{-c}$-OWSGs with at most $(c\log \lambda-2)$-qubit outputs. - Constant-advantage OWSGs. For any constant $\epsilon>0$, we construct $\epsilon$-OWSGs with $O(\log \log \lambda)$-qubit outputs assuming the existence of subexponentially secure OWFs. We show that this is almost tight by proving that there do not exist $O(1)$-OWSGs with $((\log \log \lambda)/2+O(1))$-qubit outputs. - Weak OWSGs. We refer to $(1-1/\mathsf{poly}(\lambda))$-OWSGs as weak OWSGs. We construct weak OWSGs with $m$-qubit outputs for any $m=\omega(1)$ assuming the existence of exponentially secure OWFs with linear expansion. We show that this is tight by proving that there do not exist weak OWSGs with $O(1)$-qubit outputs. - EFIs. We show that there do not exist $O(\log \lambda)$-qubit EFIs. We show that this is tight by proving that there exist $\omega(\log \lambda)$-qubit EFIs assuming the existence of exponentially secure PRGs.

Abstract:We present recursion theoretical characterizations of the computational power of Turing machines in the framework of unsharp quantum logic. For unsharp quantum logic, let a lattice ordered quantum multiple valued (QMV) algebra be its truth value lattice. When lattice ordered QMV algebras satisfy a locally finite condition (that is, every non-zero element has a finite order) and its meet operation, ∧, is computable, we prove that Σ10∪Π10⊆LdT(E,Σ)(or LwT(E,Σ))⊆Π20, where LdT(E,Σ)(respectively LwT(E,Σ)) denotes the class of languages accepted by these Turing machines in the depth-first method (respectively the width-first method). For sharp quantum logic, similar results are obtained for a general orthomodular truth value lattice.
On the isomorphism problem for power semigroups

Abstract:Let $\mathcal P(S)$ be the semigroup obtained by equipping the family of all non-empty subsets of a (multiplicatively written) semigroup $S$ with the operation of setwise multiplication induced by $S$ itself. We call a subsemigroup $P$ of $\mathcal P(S)$ downward complete if any element of $S$ lies in at least one set $X \in P$ and any non-empty subset of a set in $P$ is still in $P$. We obtain, for a commutative semigroup $S$, a characterization of the cancellative elements of a downward complete subsemigroup of $\mathcal P(S)$ in terms of the cancellative elements of $S$. Consequently, we show that, if $H$ and $K$ are cancellative semigroups and either of them is commutative, then every isomorphism from a downward complete subsemigroup of $\mathcal P(H)$ to a downward complete subsemigroup of $\mathcal P(K)$ restricts to an isomorphism from $H$ to $K$. This solves a special case of a problem of Tamura and Shafer from the late 1960s and generalizes a recent result by Bienvenu and Geroldinger, where it is assumed, among other conditions, that $H$ and $K$ are numerical monoids.

Relevant OTOC operators: footprints of the classical dynamics

Abstract:The out-of-time order correlator (OTOC) has recently become relevant in different areas where it has been linked to scrambling of quantum information and entanglement. It has also been proposed as a good indicator of quantum complexity. In this sense, the OTOC-RE theorem relates the OTOCs summed over a complete base of operators to the second Renyi entropy. Here we have studied the OTOC-RE correspondence on physically meaningful bases like the ones constructed with the Pauli, reflection, and translation operators. The evolution is given by a paradigmatic bi-partite system consisting of two perturbed and coupled Arnold cat maps with different dynamics. We show that the sum over a small set of relevant operators, is enough in order to obtain a very good approximation for the entropy and hence to reveal the character of the dynamics, up to a time t 0 . In turn, this provides with an alternative natural indicator of complexity, i.e. the scaling of the number of relevant operators with time. When represented in phase space, each one of these sets reveals the classical dynamical footprints with different depth according to the chosen base.

Abstract:Optimization Modulo Theories (OMT) is an extension of SMT which allows for finding models that optimize given objectives. (Partial weighted) MaxSMT --or equivalently OMT with Pseudo-Boolean objective functions, OMT+PB-- is a very-relevant strict subcase of OMT. We classify existing approaches for MaxSMT or OMT+PB in two groups: MaxSAT-based approaches exploit the efficiency of state-of-the-art MAXSAT solvers, but they are specific-purpose and not always applicable; OMT-based approaches are general-purpose, but they suffer from intrinsic inefficiencies on MaxSMT/OMT+PB problems. We identify a major source of such inefficiencies, and we address it by enhancing OMT by means of bidirectional sorting networks. We implemented this idea on top of the OptiMathSAT OMT solver. We run an extensive empirical evaluation on a variety of problems, comparing MaxSAT-based and OMT-based techniques, with and without sorting networks, implemented on top of OptiMathSAT and {\nu}Z. The results support the effectiveness of this idea, and provide interesting insights about the different approaches.
Generalized Optimization Modulo Theories

Abstract:Optimization Modulo Theories (OMT) has emerged as an important extension of the highly successful Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) paradigm. The OMT problem requires solving an SMT problem with the restriction that the solution must be optimal with respect to a given objective function. We introduce a generalization of the OMT problem where, in particular, objective functions can range over partially ordered sets. We provide a formalization of and an abstract calculus for the generalized OMT problem and prove their key correctness properties. Generalized OMT extends previous work on OMT in several ways. First, in contrast to many current OMT solvers, our calculus is theory-agnostic, enabling the optimization of queries over any theories or combinations thereof. Second, our formalization unifies both single- and multi-objective optimization problems, allowing us to study them both in a single framework and facilitating the use of objective functions that are not supported by existing OMT approaches. Finally, our calculus is sufficiently general to fully capture a wide variety of current OMT approaches (each of which can be realized as a specific strategy for rule application in the calculus) and to support the exploration of new search strategies. Much like the original abstract DPLL(T) calculus for SMT, our Generalized OMT calculus is designed to establish a theoretical foundation for understanding and research and to serve as a framework for studying variations of and extensions to existing OMT methodologies.

On Periodically Iterated Morphisms

Abstract:We investigate the computational power of periodically iterated morphisms, also known as D0L systems with periodic control, PD0L systems for short. These systems give rise to a class of one-sided infinite sequences, called PD0L words. We construct a PD0L word with exponential subword complexity, thereby answering a question raised by Lepisto (1993) on the existence of such words. We solve another open problem concerning the decidability of the first-order theories of PD0L words; we show it is already undecidable whether a certain letter occurs in a PD0L word. This stands in sharp contrast to the situation for D0L words (purely morphic words), which are known to have at most quadratic subword complexity, and for which the monadic theory is decidable. The main result of our paper, leading to these answers, is that every computable word w over an alphabet Sigma can be embedded in a PD0L word u over an extended alphabet Gamma in the following two ways: (i) such that every finite prefix of w is a subword of u, and (ii) such that w is obtained from u by erasing all letters from Gamma not in Sigma. The PD0L system generating such a word u is constructed by encoding a Fractran program that computes the word w; Fractran is a programming language as powerful as Turing Machines. As a consequence of (ii), if we allow the application of finite state transducers to PD0L words, we obtain the set of all computable words. Thus the set of PD0L words is not closed under finite state transduction, whereas the set of D0L words is. It moreover follows that equality of PD0L words (given by their PD0L system) is undecidable. Finally, we show that if erasing morphisms are admitted, then the question of productivity becomes undecidable, that is, the question whether a given PD0L system defines an infinite word.
