Abstract:The measurement of heavy-flavour production allows us to characterise the properties of the deconfined medium created in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies. pp collisions serve as a reference for Pb-Pb studies, and p-Pb collisions provide information on initial and/or final state effects related to cold nuclear matter. We report on open heavy-flavour as well as quarkonium production in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The experimental data are compared with results from Pb-Pb collisions as well as with various theoretical predictions.

Study of collective phenomena via the production of heavy quarks and quarkonia in hadronic collisions

Abstract:Open heavy flavor and quarkonia have long been identified as ideal probes for understanding the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Heavy quarks are produced in the early stage of the heavy-ion collisions. Therefore they experience the evolution of the medium produced, providing an important tool to investigate the properties of the QGP. In particular, the magnitude of the elliptic flow measured at the LHC is interpreted as a signature of the charm-quark thermalization in the QGP. This is reflected in the azimuthal anisotropies of the final particles. In addition, the observation of collective-like effects in high-multiplicity pp and p--Pb collisions provides new insights on the evolution of QGP-related observables going from large to small collision systems. A better understanding of heavy-quark energy loss, quarkonium dissociation, and production mechanism can therefore be obtained with those system-size dependent observables. We present recent results of the $\mathrm{J}/\psi $ and open heavy-flavor hadrons flow in pp, p--Pb, and Pb--Pb collisions carried out by the ALICE collaboration.

Abstract:Recent results on heavy flavor physics using data from the ATLAS and CMS detectors are presented. The searches for new physics signatures in CP violation of B0_s - anti(B0_s) mixing and in B0_d --> K*0 mu+ mu- decays are discussed. The bottomonium and open-b production results obtained from proton-proton collisions at LHC are shown. The results are based on data samples containing mu+ mu- pairs collected with the ATLAS or CMS detectors by their corresponding muon trigger systems.

Transport and Connection to Heavy-ion Collisions via Heavy Flavor Probes

Abstract:The heavy ion experiments in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are going through upgrade in the next five years, shifting their focus more on the hard processes in the new runs. One of the main goals is to draw a finer image for the quark gluon plasma (QGP). The heavy flavor probes , which witness the whole history of heavy ion collision are particularly sensitive to test the properties of QGP formed in such collisions. The lattice results for heavy flavor probes provide transport and phenomenological models crucial inputs to describe the experimental observations like the strong suppression of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the non-zero azimuthal anisotropy at low $p_T$. In the last two years we have seen significant advances in the lattice QCD studies of heavy flavor probes, including the in-medium quarkonium properties, the complex static quark-antiquark potential and the heavy quark diffusion from lattice simulations at nonzero temperature. These achievements substantially deepen our understanding of the fate of quarkonium, the screening/unscreening of the complex potential and the temperature and quark mass dependence of the heavy quark diffusion in thermal medium. In these proceedings, we review recent results and briefly discuss possible directions in these studies.

Abstract:Heavy quarks, i.e. charm and beauty, are sensitive probes of the medium produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. They are produced in the early stage of the collision, mainly in hard partonic scattering processes, and are expected to experience the whole collision evolution interacting with the medium constituents via both elastic and inelastic processes. The nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$) is one of the main experimental observables that allow us to investigate the interaction strength of heavy quarks with the medium. The ALICE collaboration measured the production of open heavy-flavour hadrons via their semi-leptonic decays to electrons at mid-rapidity and to muons at forward rapidity in elementary proton-proton (pp) collisions as well as p--Pb, Pb--Pb and in Xe--Xe collisions. Recent results will be discussed, and model calculations including the interaction of heavy quarks with the hot and dense QCD medium will be compared with the data.

Abstract:Heavy-flavour hadrons, containing at least one charm or beauty quark, are excellent probes of the deconfined medium created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, known as quark-gluon plasma. Results in smaller collision systems, such as proton-proton and p-Pb collisions, besides representing an important baseline for interpreting heavy-ion measurements, are crucial to test perturbative QCD calculations and hadronisation mechanisms in the absence of hot medium effects, as well as to search for commonalities with heavy-ion systems. Recently, measurements in proton-proton and p-Pb collisions have revealed unforeseen features with respect to the expectations based on previous results from ${\rm e}^{+}{\rm e}^{-}$ and ep collisions, showing that fragmentation fractions of heavy quarks are not universal. In this contribution, an overview of the most recent ALICE heavy-flavour measurements, along with the comparison to available calculations, will be discussed.

Abstract:Open and hidden heavy-flavor physics in high-energy nuclear collisions are entering a new and exciting stage towards reaching a clearer understanding of the new experimental results with the possibility to link them directly to the advancement in lattice Quantum Chromo-Dynamics (QCD). Recent results from experiments and theoretical developments regarding open and hidden heavy-flavor dynamics have been debated at the Lorentz Workshop Tomography of the Quark-Gluon Plasma with Heavy Quarks, which was held in October 2016 in Leiden, The Netherlands. In this contribution, we summarize identified common understandings and developed strategies for the upcoming five years, which aim at achieving a profound knowledge of the dynamical properties of the quark-gluon plasma.
Towards the understanding of heavy quarks hadronization: from leptonic to heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:The formation of hadrons is a fundamental process in nature that can be investigated at particle colliders. As several recent findings demonstrate, with $\mathrm{e^+e^-}$ collisions as a "vacuum-like" reference at one extreme, and central nucleus--nucleus as a dense, extended-size system characterized by flow and local equilibrium at the opposite extreme, different collision systems offer a lever arm that can be exploited to probe with a range of heavy-flavour hadron species the onset of various hadronization processes. In this review, we present an overview of the theoretical and experimental developments. The focus is on open-heavy-flavour measurements. The comparison with model predictions and connections among the results in electron-positron, proton--proton, proton--nucleus, nucleus--nucleus collisions are discussed. After reviewing the current state, we suggest some prospects and future developments.

Abstract:Heavy quarks are useful probes to investigate the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) produced in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC, since they are produced in initial hard scattering processes. To single out the signals that are characteristic of the QGP, it is nevertheless crucial to understand the primordial heavy-quark production in vacuum, and to disentangle hot from cold nuclear matter effects. Moreover, observations of collective effects in high-multiplicity pp and p-Pb collisions show surprising similarities with those in heavy-ion collisions. Heavy-flavour production in such collisions could give further insight into the underlying processes. The heavy-flavour production can be studied with $\rm e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs from correlated semileptonic decays of heavy-flavour hadrons. Compared to single heavy-flavour measurements, the dielectron yield contains information about the initial kinematical correlations between the charm and anti-charm quarks, which is otherwise not accessible, and is sensitive to soft heavy-flavour production. We report results on correlated $\rm e^{+}e^{-}$ pairs in pp collisions recorded by the ALICE detector at different collision energies. The production of heavy quarks is discussed by comparing the yield of dielectrons from heavy-flavour hadron decays as a function of invariant mass, pair transverse momentum and distance of closest approach to the primary vertex with different Monte Carlo event generators. The heavy-flavour production cross sections are also presented. Results from high-multiplicity pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV and the status of the p-Pb analysis at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02$ TeV are reported as well.

Abstract:Quarks of heavy flavors are useful tool to study quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions. Due to their high mass and early production time, heavy quarks experience the entire evolution of the system created in these collisions. Open heavy flavor meson measurements are sensitive to the energy loss in the QGP, while quarkonia are sensitive to the temperature of the QGP as they dissociate because of Debye-like screening of color charges. This presentation is a summary of the latest heavy flavor studies performed at RHIC. Results from both STAR and PHENIX experiments are presented, compared to theoretical calculations and the implications discussed.

Abstract:The study of angular correlations of heavy-flavor particles in hadronic collisions can provide crucial insight into the heavy quark production, showering, and hadronization processes. The comparison with model predictions allows us to discriminate among different approaches for heavy quark production and hadronization, as well as different treatments of the underlying event employed by the models to reproduce correlation observables. In ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, where a deconfined state of matter, the quark--gluon plasma (QGP), is created, heavy-flavor correlations can shed light on the modification of the heavy quark fragmentation due to the interaction between charm and beauty quarks with the QGP constituents, as well as characterize their energy loss processes while traversing the medium. Insight into the possible emergence of collective-like mechanisms in smaller systems, resembling those observed in heavy-ion collisions, can also be obtained by performing correlation studies in high-multiplicity proton--proton and proton--nucleus collisions. In this review, the most recent and relevant measurements of heavy-flavor correlations performed in all collision systems at the LHC and RHIC will be presented, and the new understandings that they provide will be discussed.

Abstract:Heavy flavor production is an ideal tool to study the properties of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). The heavy flavor production at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has its unique kinematic coverage and different production mechanisms from the Larger Hadron Collider (LHC) measurements. Heavy flavor products created in heavy ion collisions experience the whole evolution of nuclear medium. It's critical to measure both open and closed heavy flavor products in different collision systems to isolate cold/hot nuclear medium effects and initial/final state interactions. We report recent heavy flavor measurements at PHENIX in 200 GeV $p$+$p$, $p$+Al, $p$+Au, $^{3}$He+Au and Au+Au collisions that include: the correlated di-muon analysis in 200 GeV $p$+$p$ and $p$+Au collisions; the rapidity and $N_{part}$ dependent $J/\psi$ $R_{AB}$ measured in asymmetric small systems; open heavy flavor $v_{2}$ measured in 200 GeV d+Au and Au+Au collisions. These measurements provide further information about the heavy flavor production mechanism, initial and final state nuclear modification and flavor dependent energy loss in QGP.

Abstract:The production and space-time evolution of heavy quarks and J/psi in the quark gluon plasma is studied within the partonic transport model Boltzmann Approach to MultiParton Scatterings (BAMPS). This framework allows interactions among all partons: gluons, light quarks and heavy quarks. Heavy quarks, in particular, interact with the rest of the medium via binary scatterings with a running coupling and a more precise Debye screening which is derived from hard thermal loop calculations. We compare our results of the elliptic flow and nuclear modification factor not only to experimental data of heavy flavor electrons at RHIC, but also to LHC data of heavy flavor electrons, muons, D mesons, and non-prompt J/psi. Where no data is available yet, we make predictions for those observables. Furthermore, results on prompt J/psi elliptic flow are reported for RHIC energy within the same framework, taking the dissociation as well as regeneration of J/psi in the quark-gluon plasma into account.

Abstract:Heavy quarks are a unique probe to study the medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. Within the partonic transport model Boltzmann Approach to Multi-parton Scatterings (BAMPS) the production, energy loss and elliptic flow of heavy quarks are investigated in 3 + 1 dimensional simulations of the quark-gluon plasma evolution. With only binary interactions between heavy quarks and particles from the medium calculated within perturbative QCD, the results on elliptic flow and the nuclear modification factor are not compatible with experimental data from RHIC and LHC. However, if the binary cross section is multiplied with K = 4 both the elliptic flow and the nuclear modification factor are simultaneously described at RHIC and also LHC. Furthermore, preliminary results are presented that the implementation of radiative processes leads to a stronger suppression which agrees well with the measured nuclear modification factor at RHIC without the need of any K factor.
