Abstract:For an unknown finite group $G$ of automorphisms of a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, we find sharp bounds on the number of generic $G$-orbits needed to recover $G$ up to group isomorphism, as well as the number needed to recover $G$ as a concrete set of automorphisms.

Abstract:Motivated by the multi-reference alignment (MRA) problem and questions in equivariant neural networks we study the problem of recovering the generic orbit in a representation of a finite group from invariant tensors of degree at most three. We explore the similarities and differences between the descriptive power of low degree polynomial and unitary invariant tensors and provide evidence that in many cases of interest they have similar descriptive power. In particular we prove that for the regular representation of a finite group, polynomial invariants of degree at most three separate generic orbits answering a question posed in \cite{bandeira2017estimation}. This complements a previously known result for unitary invariants~\cite{smach2008generalized}. We also investigate these questions for subregular representations of finite groups and prove that for the defining representation of the dihedral group, polynomial invariants of degree at most three separate generic orbits. This answers a question posed in~\cite{bendory2022dihedral} and it implies that the sample complexity of the corresponding MRA problem is $\sim \sigma^6$. On the other hand we also show that for the groups $D_n$ and $A_4$ generic orbits in the {\em complete multiplicity-free} representation cannot be separated by invariants of degree at most three.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a complex linear space, $G\subset\GL(V)$ be a compact group. We consider the problem of description of polynomial hulls $\wh{Gv}$ for orbits $Gv$, $v\in V$, assuming that the identity component of $G$ is a torus $T$. The paper contains a universal construction for orbits which satisfy the inclusion $Gv\subset T^\bbC v$ and a characterization of pairs $(G,V)$ such that it is true for a generic $v\in V$. The hull of a finite union of $T$-orbits in $T^\bbC v$ can be distinguished in $\clos T^\bbC v$ by a finite collection of inequalities of the type $\abs{z_1}^{s_1}...\abs{z_n}^{s_n}\leq c$. In particular, this is true for $Gv$. If powers in the monomials are independent of $v$, $Gv\subset T^\bbC v$ for a generic $v$, and either the center of $G$ is finite or $T^\bbC$ has an open orbit, then the space $V$ and the group $G$ are products of standard ones; the latter means that $G=S_nT$, where $S_n$ is the group of all permutations of coordinates and $T$ is either $\bbT^n$ or $\SU(n)\cap\bbT^n$, where $\bbT^n$ is the torus of all diagonal matrices in $\rU(n)$. The paper also contains a description of polynomial hulls for orbits of isotropy groups of bounded symmetric domains. This result is already known, but we formulate it in a different form and supply with a shorter proof.

Orbits of permutation groups with no derangements

Abstract:Let $G$ be a nontrivial finite permutation group of degree $n$. If $G$ is transitive, then a theorem of Jordan states that $G$ has a derangement. Equivalently, a finite group is never the union of conjugates of a proper subgroup. If $G$ is intransitive, then $G$ may fail to have a derangement, and this can happen even if $G$ has only two orbits, both of which have size $(1/2+o(1))n$. However, we conjecture that if $G$ has two orbits of size exactly $n/2$ then $G$ does have a derangement, and we prove this conjecture when $G$ acts primitively on at least one of the orbits. Equivalently, we conjecture that a finite group is never the union of conjugates of two proper subgroups of the same order, and we prove this conjecture when at least one of the subgroups is maximal. The same conjecture was implicitly made by Feldman. We prove other cases of the conjecture, and we highlight connections our results have with intersecting families of permutations and roots of polynomials modulo primes. Along the way, we also prove a linear variant on Isbell's conjecture regarding derangements of prime-power order.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{G}$ be a compact Hausdorff group acting on a compact Hausdorff space $X$, $\alpha$ an irreducible $\mathbb{G}$-representation, and $C(X)$ the $C^*$-algebra of complex-valued continuous functions on $X$. We prove that the isotypic component $C(X)_{\alpha}$ is finitely generated as a module over the invariant subalgebra $C(X/\mathbb{G})\subseteq C(X)$ precisely when the map sending $x\in X$ to the dimension of the space of vectors in $\alpha$ invariant under the isotropy group $\mathbb{G}_x$ is locally constant. This (a) specializes back to an observation of De Commer-Yamashita equating the finite generation of all $C(X)_{\alpha}$ with the Vietoris continuity of $x\mapsto \mathbb{G}_x$, and (b) recovers and extends Watatani's examples of infinite-index expectations resulting from non-free finite-group actions.

Abstract:Abstract Let G be a Lie group, let $\Gamma \subset G$ be a discrete subgroup, let $X=G/\Gamma $ and let f be an affine map from X to itself. We give conditions on a submanifold Z of X that guarantee that the set of points $x\in X$ with f -trajectories avoiding Z is hyperplane absolute winning (a property which implies full Hausdorff dimension and is stable under countable intersections). A similar result is proved for one-parameter actions on X . This has applications in constructing exceptional geodesics on locally symmetric spaces and in non-density of the set of values of certain functions at integer points.

Abstract:In this paper we study the orbit closure problem for a reductive group $G\subseteq GL(X)$ acting on a finite dimensional vector space $V$ over $\C$. We assume that the center of $GL(X)$ lies within $G$ and acts on $V$ through a fixed non-trivial character. We study points $y,z\in V$ where (i) $z$ is obtained as the leading term of the action of a 1-parameter subgroup $\lambda (t)\subseteq G$ on $y$, and (ii) $y$ and $z$ have large distinctive stabilizers $K,H \subseteq G$. Let $O(z)$ (resp. $O(y)$) denote the $G$-orbits of $z$ (resp. $y$), and $\overline{O(z)}$ (resp. $\overline{O(y)}$) their closures, then (i) implies that $z\in \overline{O(y)}$. We address the question: under what conditions can (i) and (ii) be simultaneously satisfied, i.e, there exists a 1-PS $\lambda \subseteq G$ for which $z$ is observed as a limit of $y$. Using $\lambda$, we develop a leading term analysis which applies to $V$ as well as to ${\cal G}= Lie(G)$ the Lie algebra of $G$ and its subalgebras ${\cal K}$ and ${\cal H}$, the Lie algebras of $K$ and $H$ respectively. Through this we construct the Lie algebra $\hat{\cal K} \subseteq {\cal H}$ which connects $y$ and $z$ through their Lie algebras. We develop the properties of $\hat{\cal K}$ and relate it to the action of ${\cal H}$ on $\overline{N}=V/T_z O(z)$, the normal slice to the orbit $O(z)$. We examine the case of {\em alignment} when a semisimple element belongs to both ${\cal H}$ and ${\cal K}$, and the conditions for the same. We illustrate some consequences of alignment. Next, we examine the possibility of {\em intermediate $G$-varieties} $W$ which lie between the orbit closures of $z$ and $y$, i.e. $\overline{O(z)} \subsetneq W \subsetneq O(y)$. These have a direct bearing on representation theoretic as well as geometric properties which connect $z$ and $y$.

Abstract:Let $mathbf G$ be a complex orthogonal or complex symplectic group, and let $G$ be a real form of $mathbf G$, namely $G$ is a real orthogonal group, a real symplectic group, a quaternionic orthogonal group, or a quaternionic symplectic group. For a fixed parity $mathbb pin mathbb Z/2mathbb Z$, we define a set $mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$ of nilpotent $mathbf G$-orbits $mathfrak g$ (the Lie algebra of $mathbf G$). When $mathbb p$ is the parity of the dimension of the standard module of $mathbf G$, this is the set of the stably trivial special nilpotent orbits, which includes all rigid special nilpotent orbits. For each $mathcal O in mathrm{Nil}^{mathbb p}_{mathbf G}(mathfrak g)$, we construct all unipotent representations of $G$ (or its metaplectic cover when $G$ is a real symplectic group and $mathbb p$ is odd) attached to $mathcal O$ via the method of theta lifting and show particular that they are unitary.

Abstract:We prove that low-rank matrices can be recovered efficiently from a small number of measurements that are sampled from orbits of a certain matrix group. As a special case, our theory makes statements about the phase retrieval problem. Here, the task is to recover a vector given only the amplitudes of its inner product with a small number of vectors from an orbit. Variants of the group in question have appeared under different names in many areas of mathematics. In coding theory and quantum information, it is the complex Clifford group; in time-frequency analysis the oscillator group; and in mathematical physics the metaplectic group. It affords one particularly small and highly structured orbit that includes and generalizes the discrete Fourier basis: While the Fourier vectors have coefficients of constant modulus and phases that depend linearly on their index, the vectors in said orbit have phases with a quadratic dependence. In quantum information, the orbit is used extensively and is known as the set of stabilizer states. We argue that due to their rich geometric structure and their near-optimal recovery properties, stabilizer states form an ideal model for structured measurements for phase retrieval. Our results hold for $m\geq C \kappa_r r d \log(d)$ measurements, where the oversampling factor k varies between $\kappa_r=1$ and $\kappa_r = r^2$ depending on the orbit. The reconstruction is stable towards both additive noise and deviations from the assumption of low rank. If the matrices of interest are in addition positive semidefinite, reconstruction may be performed by a simple constrained least squares regression. Our proof methods could be adapted to cover orbits of other groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group acting linearly on $\mathbb{R}^n$. A celebrated Theorem of Procesi and Schwarz gives an explicit description of the orbit space $\mathbb{R}^n /\!/G$ as a basic closed semi-algebraic set. We give a new proof of this statement and another description as a basic closed semi-algebraic set using elementary tools from real algebraic geometry. Bröcker was able to show that the number of inequalities needed to describe the orbit space generically depends only on the group $G$. Here, we construct such inequalities explicitly for abelian groups and in the case where only one inequality is needed. Furthermore, we answer an open question raised by Bröcker concerning the genericity of his result.

Classifying finite groups G with three Aut(G)-orbits

Abstract:We give a complete and irredundant list of the finite groups $G$ for which Aut$(G)$, acting naturally on $G$, has precisely $3$ orbits. There are 7 infinite families: one abelian, one non-nilpotent, three families of non-abelian $2$-groups and two families of non-abelian $p$-groups with $p$ odd. The non-abelian $2$-group examples were first classified by Bors and Glasby in 2020 and non-abelian $p$-group examples with $p$ odd were classified independently by Li and Zhu, and by the author, in March 2024.

Abstract:We discuss properties of orbits of (semi)group actions on locally compact groups G. In particular, we show that if a compactly generated locally compact abelian group acts distally on G then the closure of each of its orbits is a minimal closed invariant set (i.e. the action has [MOC]). We also show that for such an action distality is preserved if we go modulo any closed normal invariant subgroup and hence [MOC] is also preserved. We also show that any semigroup action on G has [MOC] if and only if the corresponding actions on a compact invariant metrizable subgroup K and on the quotient space G/K has [MOC].

Abstract:In this paper we construct two new families of invariant maps that separate the orbits of the action of a finite Abelian group on a finite dimensional complex vector space. One of these families is Lipschitz continuous with respect to the quotient metric on the space of orbits, but involves computing large powers of the components of the vectors which can lead to instabilities. The other family avoids this issue by putting the powers only on the phase of the components, but in turn is not continuous. However, we show that they are Lipschitz continuous on the set of vectors with fixed support, so in particular they are Lipschitz on the set of vectors with no zero entries. Furthermore, the target dimension of these maps is small, i.e., linear in the original dimension.

Abstract:We study the third moment for functions on arbitrary compact Lie groups. We use techniques of representation theory to generalize the notion of band-limited functions in classical Fourier theory to functions on the compact groups $SU(n), SO(n), Sp(n)$. We then prove that for generic band-limited functions the third moment or, its Fourier equivalent, the bispectrum determines the function up to translation by a single unitary matrix. Moreover, if $G=SU(n)$ or $G=SO(2n+1)$ we prove that the third moment determines the $G$-orbit of a band-limited function. As a corollary we obtain a large class of finite-dimensional representations of these groups for which the third moment determines the orbit of a generic vector. When $G=SO(3)$ this gives a result relevant to cryo-EM which was our original motivation for studying this problem.

Abstract:Let G be a finite solvable group and Δ be the subset of Υ×Υ, where Υ is the set of all pairs of size two commuting elements in G. If G operates on a transitive G – space by the action (υ1,υ2)g=(υg1,υg2); υ1,υ2∈Υ and g∈G, then orbits of G are called orbitals. The subset Δo={(υ,υ);υ∈Υ,(υ,υ)∈Υ×Υ} represents G′s diagonal orbital.The orbital regular graph is a graph on which G acts regularly on the vertices and the edge set. In this paper, we obtain the orbital regular graphs for some finite solvable groups using a regular action. Furthermore, the number of edges for each of a group’s orbitals is obtained.
