Abstract:The existence of regular orbits on the power set is of basic importance in the arithmetical theory of finite groups. In this paper, we classify the finite solvable primitive groups acting on a set with only few regular orbits on the power set. Our results improve the work of Gluck and Wolf and apply to related research.

Abstract:A complete classification is given of finite groups whose elements are partitioned into three orbits by the automorphism groups, solving the long-standing classification problem initiated by G.\,Higman in 1963. As a consequence, a classification is obtained for finite permutation groups of rank $3$ which are holomorphs of groups.

Abstract:In this paper we study the finite groups in which every element has prime power order, briefly them EPPO-groups. The classification of EPPO-groups is given including the cases of solvable, non-solvable and simple EPPO-groups. This paper is published in Journal of Yunnan Education College, no.1(1986), p.2-10 (in Chinese). Translate it to English is helpful for readers for citing some conclusions of this paper. For example, the result of solvable EPPO-groups(see Theorem 2.4 in the text) is detailed more than G. Higman's conclusion (see reference 1 in this paper).

Abstract:A $k$-tuple $(H_1, \ldots, H_k)$ of core-free subgroups of a finite group $G$ is said to be regular if $G$ has a regular orbit on the Cartesian product $G/H_1 \times \cdots \times G/H_k$. The regularity number of $G$, denoted $R(G)$, is the smallest positive integer $k$ with the property that every such $k$-tuple is regular. In this paper, we develop some general methods for studying the regularity of subgroup tuples in arbitrary finite groups, and we determine the precise regularity number of all almost simple groups with an alternating or sporadic socle. For example, we prove that $R(S_n) = n-1$ and $R(A_n) = n-2$. We also formulate and investigate natural generalisations of several well-studied problems on base sizes for finite permutation groups, including conjectures due to Cameron, Pyber and Vdovin. For instance, we extend earlier work of Burness, O'Brien and Wilson by proving that $R(G) \leqslant 7$ for every almost simple sporadic group, with equality if and only if $G$ is the Mathieu group ${\rm M}_{24}$. We also show that every triple of soluble subgroups in an almost simple sporadic group is regular, which generalises recent work of Burness on base sizes for transitive actions of sporadic groups with soluble point stabilisers.

Regular and semi-regular representations of groups by posets

Abstract:By a result of Babai, with finitely many exceptions, every group $G$ admits a semi-regular poset representation with three orbits, that is, a poset $P$ with automorphism group $\textrm{Aut}(P) \simeq G$ such that the action of $\textrm{Aut}(P)$ on the underlying set is free and with three orbits. Among finite groups, only the trivial group and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ have a regular poset representation (i.e. semi-regular with one orbit), however many infinite groups admit such a representation. In this paper we study non-necessarily finite groups which have a regular representation or a semi-regular representation with two orbits. We prove that if $G$ admits a Cayley graph which is locally the Cayley graph of a free group, then it has a semi-regular representation of height 1 with two orbits. In this case we will see that any extension of the integers by $G$ admits a regular representation. Applications are given to finite simple groups, hyperbolic groups, random groups and indicable groups.

Abstract:Let G be a finite solvable group and Δ be the subset of Υ×Υ, where Υ is the set of all pairs of size two commuting elements in G. If G operates on a transitive G – space by the action (υ1,υ2)g=(υg1,υg2); υ1,υ2∈Υ and g∈G, then orbits of G are called orbitals. The subset Δo={(υ,υ);υ∈Υ,(υ,υ)∈Υ×Υ} represents G′s diagonal orbital.The orbital regular graph is a graph on which G acts regularly on the vertices and the edge set. In this paper, we obtain the orbital regular graphs for some finite solvable groups using a regular action. Furthermore, the number of edges for each of a group’s orbitals is obtained.

Abstract:A graph is called claw-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to the complete bipartite graph $K_{1, 3}$. The undirected power graph of a group $G$ has vertices the elements of $G$, with an edge between $g_1$ and $g_2$ if one of the two cyclic subgroups $\langle g_1\rangle, \langle g_2\rangle$ is contained in the other. It is denoted by $P(G)$. The reduced power graph, denoted by $P^*(G),$ is the subgraph of $P(G)$ induced by the non-identity elements. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the finite groups whose reduced power graph is claw-free. In particular we prove that if $P^*(G)$ is claw-free, then either $G$ is solvable or $G$ is an almost simple group. In the second case the socle of $G$ is isomorphic to $PSL(2,q)$ for suitable choices of $q$. Finally we prove that if $P^*(G)$ is claw-free, then the order of $G$ is divisible by at most 5 different primes.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify the groups of semisimilarities of finite classical polar spaces with exactly two orbits on the singular or isotropic points. As a byproduct, we obtain many highly symmetric regular sets in the point graphs of finite classical polar spaces.

Orbits of permutation groups with no derangements

Abstract:Let $G$ be a nontrivial finite permutation group of degree $n$. If $G$ is transitive, then a theorem of Jordan states that $G$ has a derangement. Equivalently, a finite group is never the union of conjugates of a proper subgroup. If $G$ is intransitive, then $G$ may fail to have a derangement, and this can happen even if $G$ has only two orbits, both of which have size $(1/2+o(1))n$. However, we conjecture that if $G$ has two orbits of size exactly $n/2$ then $G$ does have a derangement, and we prove this conjecture when $G$ acts primitively on at least one of the orbits. Equivalently, we conjecture that a finite group is never the union of conjugates of two proper subgroups of the same order, and we prove this conjecture when at least one of the subgroups is maximal. The same conjecture was implicitly made by Feldman. We prove other cases of the conjecture, and we highlight connections our results have with intersecting families of permutations and roots of polynomials modulo primes. Along the way, we also prove a linear variant on Isbell's conjecture regarding derangements of prime-power order.

Constructively describing orbit spaces of finite groups by few inequalities

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group acting linearly on $\mathbb{R}^n$. A celebrated Theorem of Procesi and Schwarz gives an explicit description of the orbit space $\mathbb{R}^n /\!/G$ as a basic closed semi-algebraic set. We give a new proof of this statement and another description as a basic closed semi-algebraic set using elementary tools from real algebraic geometry. Bröcker was able to show that the number of inequalities needed to describe the orbit space generically depends only on the group $G$. Here, we construct such inequalities explicitly for abelian groups and in the case where only one inequality is needed. Furthermore, we answer an open question raised by Bröcker concerning the genericity of his result.

Abstract:We show that the enumeration of linear orbits and conjugacy classes of $\mathbf{Z}$-defined unipotent groups over finite fields is "wild" in the following sense: given an arbitrary scheme $Y$ of finite type over $\mathbf{Z}$ and integer $n\geqslant 1$, the numbers $\# Y(\mathbf{F}_q) \bmod q^n$ can be expressed, uniformly in $q$, in terms of the numbers of linear orbits (or numbers of conjugacy classes) of finitely many $\mathbf{Z}$-defined unipotent groups over $\mathbf{F}_q$ and finitely many Laurent polynomials in $q$.

Abstract:As an extension of Schmidt theorem,the following results are obtained:(1) A finite group with less than 3 classes of non-nilpotent proper subgroups of the same order is solvable;(2) G is a non-solvable group with exactly 3 classes of non-nilpotent proper subgroups of the same order if and only if G≌A_5 or G≌SL_2(5).Furthermore,non-solvable groups with at most 5 classes of non-trivial nilpotent subgroups of the same order and non-solvable groups with at most 9 classes of non-trivial subgroups of the same order are completely classified.

Abstract:We classify the finite primitive permutation groups which have a cyclic subgroup with two orbits. This extends classical topics in permutation group theory, and has arithmetic consequences. By a theorem of C. L. Siegel, affine algebraic curves with infinitely many integral points are parametrized by rational functions whose monodromy groups have this property. We classify the possibilities of these monodromy groups, and give an application to Hilbert's irreducibility theorem.

Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.
