Abstract:Let $\gamma$ be a Riemannian metric on $\Sigma = S^1 \times T^{n-2}$, where $3 \leq n \leq 7$. Consider $\Omega = B^2 \times T^{n-2}$ with boundary $\partial \Omega = \Sigma$, and let $g$ be a Riemannian metric on $\Omega$ such that the scalar curvature $R_g \geq -n(n - 1)$ and $g|_{\partial \Omega} = \gamma$. Assuming the mean curvature of $\partial \Omega$ with respect to the outward normal is positive, we establish that the total mean curvature of $\partial \Omega$ is bounded from above by a constant depending only on $n$ and $\gamma$. Furthermore, we compute the sharp constant for this estimate when $\gamma$ is a flat metric. This result resolves a special case of a conjecture by Gromov concerning total mean curvature of fill-in with scalar curvature bounded from below. The proof combines techniques developed by Shi-Tam, Shi-Wang-Wei, as well as recent work by Brendle-Hung on the systolic inequality.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the total mean curvature estimate in the torus - filling problem with a lower bound on scalar curvature. Specifically, the paper focuses on whether, in a Riemannian manifold under given boundary conditions, when the internal scalar curvature has a lower bound, the total mean curvature on the boundary can be controlled by a constant that only depends on the dimension \(n\) and the boundary metric \(\gamma\). This problem is closely related to Gromov's conjecture on the total mean curvature estimate of manifolds with a lower bound on scalar curvature.
### Problem Background
In Riemannian geometry, studying the relationship between the intrinsic curvature of a manifold and the extrinsic curvature of its boundary is a fundamental problem. Classic results by Shi, Tam, and others show that, under certain conditions, the scalar curvature inside the manifold can control the mean curvature on the boundary. For example, Shi and Tam's theorem states that if the scalar curvature of a strictly convex region is non - negative and the induced metric on the boundary is consistent with the Euclidean metric, then the integral of the mean curvature on the boundary has an upper bound.
### Specific Problem
This paper mainly explores the following problems:
- Given an \(n\)-dimensional Riemannian manifold \(\Omega\), its boundary \(\partial\Omega\) is a torus \(\Sigma = S^1\times T^{n - 2}\).
- Suppose the Riemannian metric \(g\) on \(\Omega\) satisfies the scalar curvature \(R_g\geq - n(n - 1)\), and on the boundary \(g|_{\partial\Omega}=\gamma\).
- If the mean curvature \(H_\Sigma\) of the boundary is positive, does the total mean curvature \(\int_\Sigma H_\Sigma d\text{vol}_\gamma\) of the boundary have an upper bound that only depends on \(n\) and \(\gamma\)?
### Main Contributions
The main contribution of the paper is to prove the affirmative answer to the above problem and give a specific upper - bound estimate. Specifically, the author proves that:
- When \(\gamma\) is a flat metric, the total mean curvature \(\int_\Sigma H_\Sigma d\text{vol}_\gamma\) of the boundary is controlled by an explicit constant, which only depends on \(n\) and \(\gamma\).
- By combining the techniques of Shi - Tam, Shi - Wang - Wei, and Brendle - Hung, etc., the author obtains an accurate upper - bound estimate.
### Conclusion
The results of the paper not only solve a special case of Gromov's conjecture, but also provide a new perspective for understanding the boundary properties of manifolds with a lower bound on scalar curvature. These results are also of great significance for the quasi - local mass theory in mathematical relativity.
